Went midweek expecting our usual delicious food but... owner was out of the country! Maybe that was why the usual lunch menu with "Americanized" vegetables was almost inedible. Ordered beef with vegs (favorite Chinese vegs not offered for lunch plate) where beef was tender but vegetables & sauce were horrible, maybe undercooked & old? Think they used regular American cabbage. Ugh! No egg roll. Instead, they subbed unannounced an additional crab ragoon, which is fairly good, but again not really crab. One is good but two is too many. Rice very good as always. ~$7/lunch plate. Yes, cheap but today going out to eat again to Yumi's (S Grand Parkway) instead, which is just as $ but delicious! read more

It was ok not a 4.00 at all. Food was ok fast take out. fried rice was bland, I will not go again just not good enough to go again.

So disappointed! This used to be our go-to for good food and great customer services. I guess they have outgrown the necessity to offer friendly customer services. We arrived for an after-rush dinner at around 7pm on a week night and it was moderately crowded (about 60% occupied). However, it appeared that they had relatives or friends at several tables and all of the focus of the staff was on them. We were seated fairly promptly, but that was it. Both of the owners, waitresses AND chef continually hovered around the table with their friends/family while ignoring the rest of the restaurant. After about 10 minutes, I finally flagged down a waitress to begrudgingly take our drink order and get menus (after ignoring us twice during this attempt). Another 20 minutes went by and still no one helped us or came to our table. We finally stood up and started to leave when the owner came by. She demanded to know why we were leaving. We told her that we had been ignored for half an hour. Her response was, "well I'm here now". Needless to say, we politely declined, left money for the drinks and left. My husband and I went to this restaurant on the recommendation of other yelp members. We were not familiar with the area and wanted to get some really good Chinese food while we were in town. We went there on a Monday, at about 12:30 PM., right in the middle of lunch. I ordered the garlic shrimp as it was supposed to have lots of vegetables in a garlic sauce that was rated with 2 peppers. What I got was this thick goop that was overpoweringly sweet (tasted like it was made with tamarind sauce and was only slightly spicy. I literally was scraping the sauce off of the vegetables, it was that thick. Also, there were only 3-4 shrimp on the whole plate. My husband ordered the chicken and vegetables as well as an egg roll, and he complained that his dish tasted too salty. I tasted it and though it was mildly salty, overall I felt it was acceptable. However, the absolute worst thing was the egg roll (they call them spring rolls, but they are fried). The vegetables on the inside were more raw than cooked and had a strong cabbage smell, and it was served dripping with grease. To top it all off, the grease tasted old, almost to the point of being rancid. Needless to say, I do NOT recommend this place to anyone. This resturant doesn't give good customer service when they have more than seven tables going at the same time. So please go when theres at least two tables or get take out. Other than that the food is good but most dishes are over powered by garlic.. So if u like garlic than this is your place... read more

I was yearning for Chinese food, since the last time I had it was before my relocation to Texas. This place came highly recommended on yelp, especially for delivery. Since I was wearing house clothes, I decided to try it. Strike one: the very nice lady who answered said there was no delivery available. Boo! I went ahead and ordered some shrimp rolls and beef with broccoli. I arrived after fighting good ole Mason Rd rush hour traffic and the food was still warm, so it must've started out piping hot. The food was edible, just disappointing in that the flavors and textures weren't like any Chinese food I've had before. The beef dish had the equivalent of 4 cloves of garlic sliced into it- it was overpowering. The dish was much more soupy than I like, so that I ended up picking pieces out of the soup, instead of enjoying a glaze. It was tender though. The shrimp rolls were very authentic; I bit into one and discovered I was eating not just crispy fried dough but shrimp shells! That $5 was wasted since I couldn't take another bite. Horrible. Don't waste your money or time. The lady at the door, which I believe is part owner, is rude. She will have you wait at the front for a long time while she talks on phone, waiting to be seated. We split a lo mein. We only got one plate to eat off of, I guess because we split it with my elderly mom who was on the other side of the table.. I asked for a second plate and had to wait awhile for that while my food got cold while she was taking plates off of another table where they had already finished. I ordered egg rolls but never got them. I asked what happened to the egg roll order and she said I don't know. Very Rude. Food lousy. Unclean. The first time we had delivery from China Cottage we were very impressed. The food was well prepared and seasoned. The pot stickers were obviously store made and the sauces were not overly sweet like many sauces used in other Chinese restaurants. A few weeks later we decided to have lunch (take out) from China Cottage. Initially, we thought we were in for another great meal but we were incorrect. Halfway through the one entree we found a feather mixed in the food. We also found what best could be described as a woody twig in the pot stickers. Unfortunately, finding what should be on the barn floor in our food is to much to overlook and our meals with China Cottage are over. read more

Wow, this place was such a surprise. I ordered take out and the food is amazing. I ordered mabu tofu without the pork, and it tastes great! Their fried rice is soooo good! So are the egg rolls! The owners speak good english and are very warm. The take out was ready in less than 15 minutes, and everything I needed to enjoy my food was included. We tried here when our old Chinese spot became very inconsistent . We will for sure be coming back. The hot and sour soup was a hit. The crab rangoons were a miss. Loved the cottage chicken! After reading all the great reviews I was so happy to try this place only to be extremely disappointed. It's as if my food was cooked with meat! I orders the hunan chicken and placed my order to go. I get home and take a few bites only to bite Into MEAT!! The taste of the brown sauce was not the way Hunan ckn usually taste. This is my favorite Chinese restaurant in Katy! We've tried most of them and this is the only one that has both good food and friendly staff. The fried spring roll that comes with the meal is HUGE! Very good hot and sour soup. The lo mein has good flavor, most places it's just greasy and lacks flavor but this one has a good sauce. The general Tso's is just right, not too sweet. I recommend the mala green beans with any meat. The lady on the phone is super sweet and so was the man who delivered the food. read more

Very good quality Chinese. First impression was how clean the restaurant was. They also have a few beautiful fish tanks that are spotless and fun for kids to view. I liked the traditional Asian ambience. Service was very good. Potstickers were delicious. My sizzling platter was very good with fresh quality vegetables and meats. I would definitely return. My daughter wanted to try China Cottage as it had great reviews from Yelp. The place is small and you may not see it from the main street. I was surprised that the place was half empty on a Sunday at noon in Katy, when everyone goes out or lunch, however, there were about six families there. The wait staff was very helpful and nice and the portions generous. However, the taste was not really that good. Very thick soups, a lot of garlic in the food, therefore, you can't taste the vegetables and meats. In addition, the food did not looked fresh and Even the hot tea tasted funny. My wife and kids thought the food was good but not better than the other restaurant we usually go and i have to agree. In summary, no points or ambiance and no points for food taste and no points for value. the price of the food is cheap price, and it shows in what you will get: low quality Chinese. First time here. The place is Clean Friendly and food was Delish. I tried the Apollo Fried Rice OMGoodness it was Divine and they Did Not scrimp on Shrimp. We also tried Pork Loin in Pineapple Sauce I was Surprised as when I saw the meat I immediately thought Tough quite the Contrary. South Mason road has several Chinese eateries, but so far none that are nearly as pleasant as China Cottage. The food is very good. The environment is comfortable and quaint. The waitress is attentive and friendly. And the prices are about right. read more
