This has been my go to Chinese restaurant for years. The eggrolls are just absolutely to die for... Hot and crispy .... perfect. I actually order the sweet-and-sour chicken as a 2nd appetizer after my egg rolls. I actually call them chicken nuggets. Some of the best freshly fried lightly coated tempura chicken you'll ever eat. And then the moo goo gai pan is my go to for the meal. You get a very generous portion during their lunch hour. If for some reason, you don't like certain vegetables, order the dish without it. Let me start out and say the food was absolutely delicious and it always has been every time we have eaten at the Mason Road location. More recently it has been all about the service, or lack thereof. This last experience there were only two other patrons in the restaurant. This restaurant has the best Chinese food in Katy. It is always fresh and hot. Their seafood dishes are excellent and they even have calamari which is fried to perfection. I'm from South Louisiana and I can tell you their shrimp are always fresh and cooked excellent. I especially love their Shrimp with Lobster Sauce and Kung Pao Shrimp! We usually order Chinese authentic dishes like general Tso's chicken, chicken lo mein, and Wongton soup. The food was terrible. The food quality was the worse part of the meal. Chicken was old, stale and more breading than chicken ratio. The lo mein was swimming in oil overwhelming the whole dish. The wonton soup was flavorless I don't know how a wonton soup can be bad but it was. The only thing that was ok was the crab puffs we had at the beginning. The cleanliness of the place is also a major issue for me. The drinking cups were crusty and old, utensils and the place itself is not well kept. I added the Fried Rice, Won Ton Soup, and an Eggroll. The Eggroll was so tasty and hot. I wish I had added another. The Won Ton soup was really good. It came with 3 small Wontons. The broth was very light and tasty. The Fried Rice was a little different for me. It was filled with lots of green onions, which I dislike. I just picked them out though. Next time I will see if I can get the Fried Rice without Green Onions. The Beef with Garlic Sauce was pretty tasty too. I just wish it was spicy. That was one of the reasons that I got it. I went to Texas last week, first trip "home" in a while, and the very first place I ate was China Cottage. I had not been there in seven years, and it was a 45 minute drive from where I was staying, but it. did. not. matter. I was GOING. I ordered all of my favorites, and they were not only as good as I remembered, they were better: vegetable spring rolls, crab Rangoon, **HOT & SOUR SOUP (best ever)**, Mu Shoo Chicken, and (drum roll) General Tsao's Chicken. Also, my son went absolutely crazy over the Honey Chicken. He is not a big fan of Chinese, so this was a big deal. He's still talking about it. I have missed China Cottage SO MUCH. Where I live now in Florida, you cannot get Chinese food like this. I never knew how lucky I was until it was taken away from me. The service is still impeccable, and the ladies were very kind to us-- especially considering we got there 45 minutes to closing and took a long time to order (still sorry for that!) The original owners have retired, but you will still see familiar faces who continue to run the establishment-- the next generation. They are doing a wonderful job. As for the atmosphere, it hasn't changed. It is quiet, and you can hear the fish tank, which is calming. It's been a while since I have ordered takeout from China Cottage, but as everything else seems unchanged, I imagine they are doing an excellent job with that as well. We ordered veggie fried rice, pineapple shrimp, rice noodle stir fry shrimp, seafood wonton soup & the crab puffs. Nothing met expectations. The noodles were flavorless & instead had a smoky taste. The fried rice was eatable but not tasty. The soup was thick & googey & not good. The crab puffs filling was just too much & the bottom was soft & not crunchy. The pineapple shrimp was okay. I'm seeing people complain about the lady up front. I call in my orders and occasionally dine in, but I've never had an issue. She has patiently answered questions about the menu over the phone, and even talked me into ordering "a cheaper deal." (FYI you can sub a spring roll for the egg roll in the dinner special at no charge.) That's great customer service as far as I'm concerned. For your portion size, it is reasonably priced, and the food is always fresh. I have not had a bad piece of meat or old food. Occasionally a cute little kid in the family will ring you up instead of one of the workers, and I love it. This restaurant is conveniently located by tons of other shops and housing subdivisions, and I find myself wanting to swing by after work all the time. The vivid red fish they have swimming around in the tanks in their dining room are gorgeous. I think they pack the rice way too in advance. It tastes old and not fresh. This has happened several times.
