The hostess (likely owner) who seated my family was rude, barely greeted us when we walked in, didn't say a thing when we paid before leaving. She stared at us, no smile, no hello, no thank you. I would not return here solely for the horrible customer service of the lady at the front. Food was not good, bland, no true flavor for being a Chinese restaurant- as Chinese cuisine tends to be very flavorful and delicious. This place is not it - save your money. I've never had a bad experience at China Garden until this visit. I ordered Orange Chicken and it seemed like it was fried 3 times, the outside was burnt and the inside was almost hollow on some, the cream cheese rangoons were also burnt as well as the fried rice, it was extremely burnt! i've been ordering from Chinagarden for years. I have always especially enjoyed the dishes with shrimp. The shrimp is always very tasty and good quality. A couple nights ago I ordered a shrimp with mixed vegetables dish. the shrimp was not its usual good quality. it had a mushy consistency with no flavor. I wanted to get a vegetable with garlic sauce dish or just chopped garlic in the sauce if they don't make a specific garlic sauce...and I got the order pretty fast like 10-15 min at most but when I went home to eat it, the smell was medicinal and I realized it was due to the many celery pieces they added which makes the whole dish taste really bad, there were fresh (not canned) mushrooms, onions, and some carrot slices. But the broccoli wasn't really fresh and they added whole garlic pieces which were mushy and tasteless which happens when you don't chop it for the flavor I was hoping for. Then after I put it in the fridge I saw that the sauce turned into a gelatin like texture. So I had to wash out all the sauce w a strainer and added my own chopped garlic and soy sauce to be able to eat it. Otherwise my $15 take out dish would have gone to waste. The staff are nice and they were mostly young high school to college age students and they were kind and respectful. I just wish the food reflected the goodness of the hospitality. Look, this isn't Fargo or Minneapolis. This is Grand Forks, the cultural black hole of decent ethnic foods. For the price you pay and considering the "city" you're getting it from it's not a bad deal. The food is alright, I do actually enjoy their pot stickers. The fried rice I could take or leave. The sweat and sour chicken is alright, though the sauce is a bit thick. I do love the consumme soup. Service is fast enough so long as you aren't ordering delivery. But they are pretty much the only option for Chinese delivery in the area so it is what it is. read more

I go here once and awhile, either to eat in or get take-out. It's alright - I get the tofu and mixed vegetables and it is pretty consistently good. My kids really like the consume soup. Is it the best Chinese food I've ever had? no. But it's serviceable and it's relatively inexpensive. read more

In a town largely devoid of decent ethnic food, this place is certainly on the upper end of the list as far as oriental food is concerned. That doesn't mean it's great, but it certainly isn't bad. Service is pretty fast but follow-up can be spotty. The last two times I was there I dined mid afternoon and on both occasions I was totally ignored once my food was delivered. I know that at least 2 servers were still there because I could see and hear them on both occasions. The most recent visit, I had to listen to the hostess' phone which was turned up loud enough so the she (and the rest of us) could hear it over the piped in music. I was enough to convince me to finish quickly and adjust my tip. * The food can be good, but as is the norm in marginal Chinese joints, they tend to use way too much sauce and don't worry enough about cooking time. Lemon chicken, General Tso and Sesame Chicken were all OK but each was slightly overcooked and smothered in too much overly sweet sauce that tasted like it came out of a can or bag. * They have no concept of "extra spicy" - so pretty much like most places in Grand Forks. * The cream cheese wontons are pretty good * Hot tea is usually just really warm, not terribly hot The good news for them is that bar is set pretty low in GF so they do get a nod for best chinese food in town by default. read more

We decided to try China Garden after 10+ years because our favorite Chinese place quit delivery and China Garden does deliver. We ordered the Curry Chicken, Sweet & Sour Chicken and Vegetable Chop Suey. The delivery was 20 minutes late and they never did do updates on their order tracking. So, I sat near the front door hoping they would show up. Entrees come with white rice and beef consommé soup. The temperature of the delivered foods was more warm than hot. The Curry Chicken had maybe 2-3 very small pieces of chicken in it. It was about 90% onion pieces. A way large amount of onions. It should be called Onion Curry. The Sweet & Sour Chicken was OK. The sweet and sour sauce was thick and congealed. But, the flavor was OK. The Vegetable Chop Suey was a tangle of a lot of what looked like bean sprouts and outside of a few pieces of broccoli, it was difficult to say what vegetables were in the mass. We were disappointed in the food to say the least. I messaged a friend that is originally from Malaysia that has eaten there in recent years and she concurred. Edible but after a few bites I lost my appetite. In the garbage it went. Food was prepared very quickly but with very poor quality. Ordered Shrimp Fried Rice. It had different size shrimp in it and tasted terrible. Mostly rice, I had a very difficult time finding the shrimp. Chicken and broccoli was in so much liquid and the chicken almost looked like fish. Broccoli yuck. The only thing we actually ate was the potstickers. They were decent. If I could leave zero stars I would. we had Sesame Chicken which was from frozen breaded and tasted as though it was microwaved. The breading separated from the chicken and there was a very slight sprinkling of sesame on the top middle of the chicken. Also got the almond chicken. The only thing you could taste in the chicken is that it tasted like old freezer chicken. Practically no seasoning whatsoever. I paid $50 for 3 entrees and threw most of it away. it's better than most places in north dakota! I dont have high expectations. i usually get the shrimp and broccoli and ask for less sauce because i dont want this full of MSG. I really would love it if they could just stirfry it versus all that sauce. Each meal comes with soup and rice so that's a big plus that you dont have to order those separately. 70 dollars worth of take out and the food is horrible. Consomme soup has a strong fishy taste. General Tao chicken was flavorless. Beef and broccoli taste like the meat has turned. What I got was cold deep fried chicken (sweet and sour chicken) no sweet and sour sauce. cold deep fried shrimp.. which all my deep fried orders tasted like old oil.. I also ordered special fried rice that tasted dry.. more like cardboard and very little special treats in it.. the WonTons had like a hard ball in the middle.. horrible... we are now into 45 min to bring us sweet and sour for my little girls dinner.. I asked for a refund in which I was willing to send all the food back.. I was told no refund... I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone.. very bad food and even worse they didn't do anything to make it right.. I don't know about all of you, But I work very hard for 100.00... First time ordering from them, it was good! Although slightly different from what we are used to in Cali. Sweet and sour chicken is more like chicken balls with sweet and sour sauce on side. Still good, but I like my veggies in it. :) General chicken was bomb. Delivery showed up at slotted time, food was still warm, only thing is the system doesn't actually update of progress. We had an early dinner at China Garden and the experience seemed rather average. On the plus side: nice decor, attentive (if young and not polished) staff, decent food (at least for me), good-sized portions, reasonably priced. On the down side: a dirty wine glass, average food, my friends' food was not as good as they would have hoped, flies buzzing around, and I guess rather a typical place in Grand Forks. I gave this place a star for friendly staff, a second star for them delivering in the snow at my requested time, and a third for food cooked well and arrived hot! They were accommodating when I called at 6:50pm to deliver at 8:00pm. What I disliked was there were no chopsticks in my bag so make sure you request that. The food just was not that great and bland. I ordered the chicken lo mein and pork gyozas. I've had much better in regard to taste for same price in other states. I would order again and try a few other things on the menu. read more

I was sooo excited to find a Chinese restaurant that was open to deliver during this Covid stuff. Sadly I should have saved my money. The fried rice was sooo bad... you could tell it was from a day or two ago, all dried out, both the rice and the very small amount of meat tidbits there was in it. And worst of all, the flavor was simply that of rice and meat that had soy sauce poured into it, gross. They also got my order wrong, and the veggies where totally RAW, not tender cooked. Ordered chicken egg fooyung; it almost has no egg, i think they use egg in the batter. Bean sprouts were old, its was dark gray color and soggy. There were a few bit of chicken meat. Ordered general TSO chicken and it tasted old, sauce feels like something is not right. Ordered chicken fried rice and it feels like they simply add some soy sauce and old cut cooked chicken. It took me a while to figure out that the egg foo young actually had a very thin layer of egg over the top of it. I kept wondering why I was eating a pile of sprouts with gravy. In full disclosure, I've only been to China Garden once, so this may have been a fluke, but it was bad enough that I don't really want to stop back for a second go... I was there for lunch, and ordered sweet and sour chicken with fried rice off of their lunch menu. After the seriously delicious Cream Cheese Wontons (the only thing that saved this place from one star), I was a little shocked by how bad my entree was. The soup that came before the meal was pretty good, but the chicken balls (that came accompanied by a bland bowl of sweet and sour sauce) seemed like someone took a stack of dried-up sliced lunch meat and hacked it into ugly hunks before glopping them in breading and frying them up. Even the fried rice seemed burned or smoked or something, and seemed about 19 parts rice to 1 part itty-bitty ham chunks - no onion, egg, or seasonings to speak of. The service was also shoddy. The lunch crowd WAS pretty substantial, but the waitress didn't even stop long enough for me to finish ordering before starting to walk away backwards - still listening and writing down as I finished speaking. It was all bad enough that although I was still hungry, I stopped eating about halfway through... you just can't eat bad meat. Blech. read more

China Garden - Love the large open space - Chinese Near Me - Grand Forks, North Dakota

This is the only table service Chinese food in GF. Chinese, not Japanese or Asian fusion. Although other reviewers clearly had trouble with delivery, the two times I had delivery I got what I ordered in good time. I enjoy the food, especially the noodle or rice soup (broth with many veggies and pork), pork fried rice, and pineapple ginger chicken. They have a daily special that is very affordable, but I don't usually get it because it's half fried, with both fried rice and sweet-and-sour meat nubbins. The sweet-and-sour sauce tastes metallic to me, so if I want to do the sweet-salty affect I order some other dish with a sweet sauce (like the pineapple ginger chicken). The staff there are very nice, and friendly to regulars. I find it to be busy when I go, but it is often a Sunday lunch. People bring their kids a lot, so it can be circuslike. read more
