I am deeply disappointed to be writing this review, as China Garden on North Tamiami Trail in Sarasota had been a restaurant I frequented regularly for several years without incident--until my most recent experience. On this occasion, I placed a takeout order on my way to work for a long shift (3:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.), anticipating that this would be my only meal of the day. My order consisted of a shrimp egg roll, shrimp with vegetables, and a large house fried rice. I picked up the order without thoroughly inspecting the bag, as I had never previously encountered an issue. As I was placing the bag in the kitchen at work, I briefly glanced inside and immediately noticed that the small white paper bag typically used to hold the egg roll was not present. I called the restaurant right away, and the gentleman I spoke with acknowledged that the shrimp egg roll had indeed been forgotten and not placed in the bag. He was apologetic and professional and offered for me to come back to retrieve it. When I explained that I had already started my shift and would not be able to return until later that evening, he kindly noted my phone number and assured me I could receive the item on a future visit. I appreciated his honesty and courtesy. Unfortunately, matters worsened later that evening when I went on my dinner break. Upon unpacking my meal, I realized that my large house fried rice was also missing. Instead, I found only a small container of plain steamed white rice, which automatically comes with the shrimp and vegetables. While this side is standard, it is not something I eat. I specifically ordered the large house fried rice because it is my preferred choice and was intended to be my primary meal for the evening. After not eating all day, this was extremely disappointing. I immediately called the restaurant again and spoke with a young woman who was sympathetic and apologetic. I asked if the missing items could simply be refunded to my card, and she informed me that a manager would contact me shortly. When the manager did call, the interaction took a troubling turn. Rather than listening or attempting to resolve the issue, she insisted that both items had been placed in the bag--directly contradicting the earlier admission from her own staff that at least one item had been forgotten. This assertion implied dishonesty on my part, which was both inaccurate and offensive. The manager's tone was dismissive and hostile. When I expressed my discomfort and stated that I would return the food due to the way I was being treated, she refused to provide her name, told me we would "discuss it when you bring the food back," and abruptly hung up on me. This behavior continued across multiple calls. Each time I requested her name for the purpose of filing a complaint, she refused and ended the call. Only after calling back yet again did another employee finally provide the manager's name (FiFi). Mistakes in food service can happen; what matters is accountability, professionalism, and respectful communication. Being accused of dishonesty, spoken to rudely, denied basic transparency, and repeatedly hung up on is entirely unacceptable. I will be returning the food and will not be returning as a customer. Long-standing patrons deserve respect and integrity--neither of which were demonstrated in this experience. read more

This one is by far my favorite American Chinese place. Food isn't too bland nor too salty, which happens very often to most American Chinese place. Over all I continue to be impressed by China garden and this is my go to place for cheap and cheerful Chinese food in Sarasota. You can't beat the lunch specials which include a generous main course and either a soda or egg roll for under $6. Now, it is not the best or even most authentic Chinese food I have ever tasted - but for the price, it certainly beats reasonable expectations. I usually get the bourbon chicken, the chicken with cashews and the beef and broccoli. I have never had any issues with those meals and I continue to go back. I have never stayed to eat in. Fast, better than good and reasonably priced Chinese. I had Singapore noodles and vegetable tofu in Szechuan sauce (normally served in black bean sauce). It took 10 minutes for take out and their prices were reasonable. It's next to Publix between 10th and 11th on TamiAmi. There are tables for dining in and pictures of popular items. The staff who speak limited English are very friendly and are accommodating of substitutions. Everything was delicious! read more

I was debating between 3 and 4 stars and ultimately leaned higher. While the food didn't knock my socks off, they did have plenty of edible options and it did pass the taste test. A small shop located in a Publix plaza, it produces better Chinese food than the competition around town. Great prices, large portions, and good food. Some of the chicken and steak had a gristly pieces, but I think that's to be expected anywhere. I ordered Krab rangoon (my 2nd favorite menu item of the night), orange chicken, and veggie lo mein (my #1 fave menu item- yum!). The lo mein was delicious, I basically finished the large size to myself! The orange chicken sauce was very tasty too. The fried rice is, however, made with yellow rice. Not white rice that was turned brown due to frying so I probably won't get that again. Also the speed at which our large order was finished was very fast. I'm vegetarian and I approve! $5 got me some fresh and hot veggies in a garlic sauce a side of fried rice with onions and bean sprouts and 2 veggie spring rolls! Normally their lunch specials come with pork fried rice and 2 small prok spring rolls, I asked them to substitute for veggie and it was no problem whatsoever. I've never been blown away by any Chinese restaurant on the East or West Coast (or in the UK), but I have had it on a sliding scale from greasy and no love put into it to good solid food...this place has good solid food. I'm always amazed at how other chinese restaurants struggle to get a simple vegetarian dish right. It veggies stir fry essentially...how hard can that be!? THESE GUYS GET IT!! IT'S GOOD STUFF! I think they rock it because they do not go overboard with tryign to be fancy yet they also do not seem to cut corners to a point where the end result suffers. I love this place so much. As a college student, this was definitely my go-to place for food at least once a week, and I'm so bummed that I most likely will never have China Garden again since moving. China Garden is owned by a young couple who are so kind and friendly that I've actually befriended them although English is not their best language. The food there is absolutely delicious and so worth the price. My favourite, the veggie lo mein, is only about $4 and a can of soda is only 75 cents. At other places, a pint of veggie lo mein would cost about $7+ and a soda would be at least $1.25. In addition to having great food and awesome prices, the owners and cooks always remember my dietary restrictions and quirks. I'm vegetarian as well as picky, and never have I've been accidentally served the wrong order. To top it off, they're very fast! Most Chinese take-outs will tell you 10-20 minutes, but I swear they finish my order in 5 minutes. This is honestly the best place for Chinese take-out that I've ever encountered. read more

I like the food, but the service is less than desirable. I placed an order today for pickup and when I got to the restaurant, there were two people ahead of me in line. While I was standing there, no less than five men came in and stood at the front of the counter, ignoring the line, and they were helped first. When I finally reached the register, the cashier helped the man next to me first, even though I had also been there before him. The food was good. Gen. Tso was not overly spicy, Crab Rangoon actually had crab in it. My biggest complaint was the a/c wasn't working and the bathroom was out of order for customers but not for the owners kids. 90+ degrees outside is to hot to not have a/c or more fans inside for customers. read more

Awful, terrible, never use them. Ordered for delivery from the Hyatt Regency. Gave cell phone number. Was told 30 min. Called them after 60 minutes to find out eta. Woman seemed confused and put me on hold to ask someone else. Came back and said he was on his way. 30 min later I get a call on a different phone, from the front desk, asking if I'd ordered Chinese. Evidently he'd been standing in the lobby not knowing what to do bc his boss didn't give him a phone number. So I have to go down to lobby to get the food, a full hour late. Ask him if there are chopsticks inside. He says yes. Get the (cold) food upstairs. Open it. Discover not only no chopsticks, no forks or eating utensils of any kind! So eating cold Chinese food with my hands and no napkins. Awesome. Oh and the food was greasy and not tasty. Also I should mention that I called the restaurant after discovering the lack of any utensils, and the woman on the phone not only gave me attitude but never, not once, apologized for the terrible customer service. read more
