The best Chinese food we have found in a three year search. Delivery via Postmates. The steamed dumplings were fresh, not doughy and served with a delicate sauce that complimented the flavors. The General Tso's chicken was fresh, moist, spicy and delicious. The shredded pork with garlic sauce also had a kick! Lots of fresh vegetables and real meat! Quantity I stopped in at Chen's yesterday for dinner. I had the impression from looking at their website it was a sit down restaurant that also offers takeout. In truth, it is more a takeout restaurant with 5 tables inside for dining in, at least during these Covid times. I dined in. I ordered up at the front, where someone on the other side of plexiglass takes your order. They have devised a pass-thru box for the food that I watched being used for several takeout orders while I was there. They even have a microphone inside and a speaker so it is easy to hear the person taking the order. I thought they had a good setup to keep everyone safe. The dining room was stark, with plastic silverware. It was quite possible the dining tables are popular during busy times, for my visit I was the only one eating in. It took less than 10 minutes for my Chicken Corn Soup and Orange Chicken to be ready, and they did bring it to my table. The food was very temperature hot and I had to be careful least I burn my mouth. Good for takeout or delivery, I just had to start slow. I'd rate both items as about average, the sauce for the Orange Chicken was neither spicy as listed on the menu, nor very sweet. The menu is quite extensive. I thought the price of my food was kind of high, but I think prices have gone up all over in restaurant world. I need to adjust. The quantity of food was large, too, enough to take some home for another meal. The smallest soup side was a pint, and the pile of chicken for my orange chicken was high. read more

There are times when you want some traditional Chinese food without having to deal with limited buffets. The old days are gone, but we are still lucky to have the small take-out shops, such as Chen's Gourmet. Nice to see a menu with a normal selection of Chinese food, mostly available in pint or quart servings for take-out. Tasty items, ready fairly quick. Friendly staff, but... Staff interaction is restricted. The counter is separated from the customers by a shield that had to have been installed during the pandemic, and just left there. You'd think you were eating at a bank! I never thought I'd be thinking about security when placing a Chinese food order. One other thing: don't come here looking for a quick, cheap meal. They call themselves Gourmet, likely to justify the price tag. I spent $25 on a carry-out quart of House Fried Rice - because I had to buy each of the expected proteins separately! Did enjoy it. Will have to think about my next visit, but suspect I'll do it again. read more

I was just in New York City Chinatown and I said to them this is not nearly as good as the restaurant I go to in Crystal Lake... My children who live in New York thought I was insane but I got to tell you it's kind of great. I am all for Chen's The best eggrolls, exceptional, egg, drop soup... Tried this on Christmas. Our meals were great then but not so much this weekend. We ordered the same meal but this time we had the meal there. I have ordered from Chen's Gourmet in past and found it to be really good. I don't know what happened, my last order was not good. I really felt that if I ate a certain part of the dinner I would get sick. My rice was ok, but I've had better even from them. My fried chicken wings were bad, they were dark inside and out, looked to have been re-fried, and the smell of the wings were off-putting. read more

Got takeout from here while staying at a hotel near the airport; doordash delivered.. I'd say it was average, but not the worst Chinese food I've had in Florida. From what we ordered, the egg rolls, shrimp rolls, and krab Rangoon to start were pretty tasty and crispy. The sesame chicken and fried rice were pretty good too; not all white meat, but tasty nonetheless. The only things I wouldn't order again are the egg foo young and the lomein. The egg foo young was very average, and the gravy that completes the dish had wayyy too much cumin in it, and tasted more like an Indian sauce than Asian. And the lomein was average as well, plus very oily and greasy. All in all, I'd probably try somewhere else next time. But again, not the worst I've ever had. read more

I didn't like it. I thought the word "Gourmet" in their name may mean that it's better than most take-out Chinese, but it wasn't very good, in my humble estimation. The cashew chicken really didn't taste like chicken. And the vegetables were rather mushy. There wasn't much flavor at all, and I had to put a lot of soy sauce on it. Even the spring roll had a "mushy" consistency inside it. The shrimp lo mein had a ton of noodles but not many shrimp and they were teeny tiny shrimp. Not much flavor. I won't be returning. Sorry. The only good thing I can say is that there was a LOT of food. But quantity doesn't make up for subpar quality and I'll have to waste it because I'm not looking forward to the leftovers. read more

Chen's is the best in theRochester area. Th food and drinks are best. Mr.Chen is a friendly, generous host. Haven't been anywhere in Florida that compare. If there is anything to be annoyed about, it is the unhappiness of the servers. Their first words are unfailingly "ready to order?" This place is really good! It's actually the closest Chinese restaurant to me. Can't believe I haven't been here yet. The portions are a good size and will leave you with a second helping. The krab rangoons are the most filled rangoons I've ever had. Combo is very well priced and comes with fried rice and an egg roll. Due to the virus, there is no dine in option and you have to order from the window (best to call ahead). Wait time was super short and my food was ready when I got there. I have tried all the well rated Chinese restaurants in the west and central Bradenton area and FINALLY found my Go-To! Thank you Chen Family for a most delicious fresh authentic meal. The chicken and broccoli was amazing. Directions were followed to the exact request ---no onions and add some spice to it. Perfect !!!! I never ordered lemon chicken from an Asian restaurant before and I really thought I had a French or Italian chef prepare it. Two ounces cutlets of chicken coated and crispy crispy with fresh lemon juice zest and lemon slices on a bed of cabbage and the lemon sauce that came with it WOW I could dip my finger in it lol.
