Two of my buddies and I heard about China Garden and we decided that would be our lunch spot for today. We arrived at about 11:45 and we were the only people in the restaurant. Our server was extremely friendly and quickly brought us drinks. Since this was our first time it took us a while to look over the menu which was quite extensive. The entire back page of the menu was filled with lunch specials which are priced very reasonably at $7.99. We all ordered from the lunch menu. I ordered Chicken lo Mein anda cup of Hot & Sour soup. The other people in my party ordered Sesame Chicken and General Tso's Chicken. All three of us were extremely pleased with the service and the quality of the food. My hot and sour soup was extremely delicious. It was chock full of sliced mushrooms and several pieces of tofu and it was almost a meal in itself and was served very hot. My Chicken lo Mein was equally delicious. The others in my party praised their meals as well and all three of us felt that we had finally found an excellent Chinese restaurant. In town for business. CG was close to the hotel and had good reviews. I went in at 5:45pm on a Tuesday. Not busy at all. Got seated immediately and had food out in less than 10 minutes. For those that know traditional spicy shrimp, this was spot on! Dusting of breading to hold the salt and deep fried with the shell on, which most will eat. Looking at the plates, I'm not used to very vibrant neon colored sauces on top of chicken. The chicken itself isn't seasoned and a few of them are sour tasting. They were cooked all the way but overall the chicken dishes are not the best. 2/10 The saving grace was definitely the lo mein. A sign out front said lunch specials $6.99 but the menu said $7.99. They must have recently raised their prices. We were greeted by a very friendly proprietor. Dan ordered Mongolian beef and I got Kung Pau chicken. I had trouble deciding because the sweet and spicy eggplant. I love eggplant but don't often find it on menus. On the other hand, it's difficult to pass up the peanuts in the Kung Pau. Oh decisions. The egg roll was the best part of both dishes. It was extremely crisp and light. It's much better than egg rolls from other restaurants. My husband complained that his dish was too oily. I had him taste mine and he said it was too oily for his tastes, too. I'm more tolerant of oil than Dan is, but I'd say it was a bit more oily than Kung Pau I've had at other restaurants. The portions were slightly smaller than what I'm use to in other restaurants, but I left full and Dan asked for a to go box. I wish I could give 3.5 stars. That would better measure today's experience. It's difficult to measure being fair to the business and not misleading customers. I heard people talking about Lo Mein. Next time I will try that. This restaurant is quaint. We stayed approximately 1 1/2 hours, taking our time enjoying each other. The staff was sweet and compassionate. The food was good but I didn't explore. My hubby assumed the Mongolia Beef would be spicier. He requested they add some chili spice... he was pleased with the result. I enjoyed the veggie stir fried rice. During the conversation I found out that they have vegetable tempura type tofu. So next time, I will give it a try. read more

We have been meaning to update our review. We went there in June 2023 and the owners changed. Really sad because I always stopped by for the dry fry pot. I knew something was wrong when I took my first bite. The dish was tasteless, the ingredients were all over the place. I thought they changed the recipe but if so even the taste profile was bland. I thought maybe they were cutting costs by not using actual cumin seeds and not using Chinese celery. Then I had confirmed the shop was sold. I imagine the new owners want to do it their way which is good. I just can't stand by my original review anymore. May give it a try next time I'm in town and update my review once more. This is where I go when I want solid Chinese food options in East Tulsa. This is an unsuspecting little space that is obviously dated and kind of run down. don't let that stop you from going inside to experience some VERY friendly folks who deliver amazing quality food. I get that some places go all out on decor and keeping it bright and shiny. Again, you won't find that here. I have to rave on though about the food and the service. The first few pages of the menu in my mind tell you about what they really do. Lots of pictures and food spelled out in english only. Flip to the second half and it's no longer english! That tells me they cater to a crowd of folks who want traditionally prepared and serve cuisine! You'll find some Szechuan and cantonese fair and I've yet to have a dish here that didn't blow my socks off! My first visit to China Garden on 31st was yesterday evening. I was greeted by an elderly gentleman whom I assume was the owner and who was eating his supper and watching a show on his tablet. He was very polite and welcoming. As I had placed my order via Yelp he was expecting me since no one else was in the restaurant. Shortly after arriving and while waiting for my order two elderly Asian couples arrived. This made me very happy as it did the owner. They all carried on in their native language for a bit and sat down to order their food. These interactions are what I always look for when finding a new restaurant. I've traveled all over the world and this helps to identify a great choice in dining in most cases. One thing I usually do when traveling is to ask the owners or cooks to make me what they would eat for their meals to get the most authentic food possible. Will probably do this next time. Any way... Our takeout consisted of General Tso's Chicken, Dry Pot BOK Choy, Sichuan Tofu, Crab Wontons, and Veggie Spring Rolls. We also received a very spicy Sichuan Pork with Green Beans dish that we didn't order so, apologies to whoever might have been missing a meal. We were already home downtown when we discovered it. I must say I had very high hopes after reading several reviews. For the most part, I was satisfied with the overall freshness and flavors of the food. I do love how they don't over-Americanize their dishes. The General Tso's Chicken was very good with a sticky sauce and tender white meat chicken although I prefer a bit more spicy heat. Very good though. My wife had the Sichuan Tofu which she often gets from other places and I could tell she wasn't overly enthused although she said she might order it again. The wontons and spring rolls did not disappoint and were my favorite part bringing out the kid in me who is usually satisfied with a meal consisting of appetizers though I rarely do that nowadays. We initially ordered Dry Pot Cauliflower but they were out so we substituted BOK Choy. I must say I wasn't expecting just a container of Steamed BOK Choy in a clear sauce. It had no flavor and was just limp veg so it was not too appealing to me. The final dish which we don't order but received was the Sichuan Pork with Green Beans. We don't eat pork but I tasted/ate the green beans and was very impressed with the spicy heat I was looking for in my General Tso's! Too bad I couldn't eat the rest of the dish because the flavor of the sauce was my favorite of them all. All in all, I look forward to trying other dishes from China Garden and finding the ones I know I will like even better and that I know are there. read more

I am a supporter of local business my rating may be biased because of it. So one of the really good features of China Garden is the lunch special which is really cheap. I do feel they need to update the banner in the front because the lunch special is $7.99 now and the sign still says $6.99. The portion size is on the smaller side but I expected this because of the price. I love the sweet and spicy eggplant and would get the same thing if I go back. It's delicious. I always get dumplings especially when it says homemade. For the most part, I am happy with them. One of them is opened at the bottom. I am not sure when these were made but probably not on the same day. Wherever they got the chili oil, they need to find a different brand because there's a bitter taste. You definitely do not come here for the service. The owners are really nice people but service is slow. I am not sure what happened but they gave me chopsticks to eat with my plate. My new go-to Chinese spot in Tulsa county! I'm a huge fan of eggplant and theirs is fantastic! Also loved the bean sauce fish (just add a little bit of salt or soy sauce if you like a little saltier), and kung pao chicken was also solid but on the spicy side. Veges cooked to absolute perfection. We said we'd share a hot and sour soup. It was presented in a rather large bowl with dual table settings. Everything was piping hot. Our entrees were fresh and served piping hot. I mean, this is no buffet-style Asian food. This was a cook or more in the back throwing it together as ordered and that set a high bar. With that said, I really felt like the dishes needed more onions and peppers. My General Tao's came with two small green peppers and two small white onions. In my opinion, that dish needs chili peppers and should maybe be a third veggies. My wife's sweet and sour chicken had no veggies. In my opinion, it is served best with green peppers, onions, and pineapples. Look, that's all personal preference. I can't fault them for that but we were ever so slightly disappointed by that. The egg drop soup with a little thick for my preferred texture. Otherwise, the server was jovial and prompt. The food was tasty. The high price point and lack of veggies took it from five to four stars. This is a solid restaurant. Unfortunately, every time we order online the price it states online is not the same price that gets charged. Once I paid online at checkout and it showed up $2-3 more on my card statement than the receipt I received/payment I submitted online. Thinking it was a one-off or a weird processing fee, I elected to pay in-person on my next order. Again, there was a couple $ discrepancy between the receipt online and what they charged me in person. I've scoured their website and can't find anything about a service charge or anything of the like. Regardless of what's going on, that's a yucky business practice. It's not easy to run a proper Chinese restaurant in Tulsa with so many all-you-can-eat buffets offering endless dining experiences. The cooks are from Szechuan, but the menu has all the canton classics as well. Hand-pulled noodle: Correct texture on the noodle, flavor and other ingredients are nothing special. Beef flat rice noodle: Buttery comfort food. :) Very mild flavor. Dan Dan Noodle - This is a classic szechuan dish. Expect thick plain soba-style noodles and simple a chili oil reduction that numbs your mouth with a unique spicy flavor. Ma La Sirloin Noodle - Ok, this is not for the faint of heart. Ma La has become a classic flavor from the region. While the noodles appear similar to ramen, the broth reminded me of pig's blood, or even duck blood curd. The flavor profile is complex. The chunks of stew meat are chewy, providing ample flavor to balance out the thin, delicate broth. Dumplings: Ok, these are just wontons. You're at a Chinese restaurant. Move forward. Lo Mein: You can do much better than this from a nice Chinese restaurant like China Garden. Don't order this on its own - it comes with other items for free! Double Cooked Pork: Classic Hunan dish, but this has to be the best twice-sautéed pork I've ever had. Looks like bacon, tastes like heaven. I was picking away at this with a little shame all night... but it wasn't enough to hold me back. Clean plate next morning! Szechuan pork ears - you know what you're getting into if you order this. Today I made a daring escape from the confines of not only the home office, but Owasso in general. Doesn't happen often. As I was headed into T-town, I had a destination in mind, one that had been on the bookmark list for some time. As I barreled down highway 169, I swung a right and exited on 31st street, and kept going west. My destination: The China Garden. I'd salivated over other Yelper!s pictures for far too long. I arrived just past noon, and was seated immediately. As in, right away. Note to new visitors.... you seat yourself. Don't stand around looking lost like I did for a couple minutes. A very friendly gentleman greeted me with a smile and a menu, two of my favorite things in a restaurant. Since I'd already perused the pics online, I had a pretty good idea what I was going to go for, but still, I did give the menu a good shakedown. It's pretty large with lots of variety. One thing I knew early on, and got confirmed when I saw the menu.... this isn't your typical corner location, MSG laden fast food Chinese takeout joint. As I commented to The Wife, this isn't your usual 'AmerAsian' joint. The menu is very oriented towards much more ethnic Chinese cuisine. I started with a chicken egg roll and fried dumplings and opted for the dry pot ribs for my entree. Because I wanted a little something more to sample, I also got a lunch order of beef lomein to go, figuring I'd nosh on it a bit this afternoon, purely for the sake of the review, you understand. The things I do for you people..... seriously..... :) The dumplings hit the table first, still sizzling from the pan and accompanied by a really nice dipping sauce. The sauce was a slightly sweet soy with a hint of toasted sesame. Really subtle and nicely done. The dumplings were nothing short of perfect. Perfectly sized, perfectly cooked, and perfectly good. I left a couple for The Wife to try later, and I must admit, I resented it just a bit. I wanted them all. Next up was the egg roll. Thinner than your usual egg roll, more like a spring roll, it to was cooked perfectly. Sometimes they get overcooked and get all brown and crusty, but not this one. Delicately seasoned with a nice amount of filling, it was a worthy addition to the lineup. Shortly on the heels of the apps, and I do mean shortly, my entree arrived. First, they use the cutest little steel wok on a stand with a burner underneath. The wok was still sizzling, but oddly enough, the burner just kept the food at a good temp without overcooking, or overheating it. Now for the ribs.... Really well seasoned and dry (hence the name). Included in the wok was a generous amount of fresh green beans and onions, lightly sauteed in dried chilies and a seasoned oil. Also present was an abundance of dried chili pieces, which I have to confess, I wasn't fond of. It's seasoning, I get it. And most of the time they're a pain to pick around, but not this time. The beans and onions were easy enough to fork, and the little riblets I just nabbed by hand. While not very big, each one packs a punch of flavor. A little crunch on the outside, tender on the inside, and possessing plenty of porky goodness. I'd eat em again in a second, and probably will. Service was great, with no issues there. Atmosphere was nice and quiet, lighting a bit on the dim side, which is nice. The lomein arrived just as I was wrapping up, which was my plan all along. I tossed the last couple of dumplings in the container but paused to take just a bite of the lomein. This dish didn't win any points with me. It's pretty much sauced noodles and beef, and not much else. My favorite lomeins have always had some green onions, celery, carrot slivers and maybe a piece or two of bok choy, and all lightly sauced, if sauced at all. I'm just not a fan of heavily sauced noodles, so I'm taking the hit on this one. This isn't a reflection of the product at all, but just a taste thing with me. That said, the lomein did taste good. Overall, The China Garden is indeed a neighborhood hidden treasure. The food is great, and best of all, unique. I plan on returning to sample many of their more exotic dishes, especially now that we're looking down the throat of fall and cooler weather. The China Garden may be a hidden gem The couple that own, and operate the restaurant are supper nice people. You will enjoy meeting them. The service is a little slow and not as attentive as it could be, but the food will make up for it. Also, if you are used getting massive amounts of Chinese food, that almost always requires a go box; well it won't happen here. Their portions are reasonable, but not huge. What attracted me to the restaurant were the dry pot meals. The beef rib dry pot seems to hands down one of the favorites ordered by diners. I tried the chicken instead. It is bone in chicken that is cut into small pieces. It was heavily seasoned with cumin, and other spices, deep fried, then served in a small wok with a live flame underneath to continue the cooking process at your table. Along with the chicken were onion, celery and lots of chili peppers. It is a very spicy flavorful dish. Delicious, like nothing I have ever had! We also had the orange chicken. It was good, not too sweet, but average. There are items on the menu that I have not seen on a Chinese menu before. That makes the Chinese Garden a little unique and worth the try. For New Year's Eve I yelped the top rated Chinese restaurant in Tulsa and this was the result. I can say that Yelp didn't lead me wrong because it was great!! The chef was super friendly to explain the menu choices. For the appetizer we got the fried dumplings which were very good! They were nice and crisp. The husband wanted to find some Chinese food that tasted like our hometown's takeout (which is notoriously hard to do) for his birthday, and I found this gem! We ordered a short rib dry pot, house lo mein, and sweet and sour chicken. The lo mein is just like home (just had to add a dash of tamari), and the dry pot was perfectly spicy (they'll make it as spicy as you want!). We took our takeout order home, and devoured it in all its glory! Hubby loves the older gentleman who runs the store. He called us as they were preparing our food to make sure we had ordered from the right place. He noticed our phone area code wasn't local, and he checked up just in case. We've been long time patrons of this restaurant until it changed owners in May 2023. Originally, we thought the new owners were going to keep things the same as they were getting training by the previous cook on how to make the menu. We went in May 2023 with hope and had a mostly pleasant experience. The new owner told us about how there were making plans to change a few things and try to lower prices and add in some new items. When we returned this time hoping for a repeat of our May visit, we were met with no menu changes, but significant quality changes and I don't think we'll be back. What we ordered and changes experienced.... -Bamboo Tower of Fish: the type of fish used is different as is the preparation, the spice was completely different and much too hot, the cilantro topping was scarce. -Steamed dumplings: I used to love these, they've changed. I don't think they were actually steamed, more of boiled. They also had completely different flavor of overall bad. I don't send food back, these went back. Sadly. The sauce was also not usual. (Note, we did not get charged for these since there was an issue) -Steamed buns: I think these were frozen and completely different. -Green beans: these were good, but something was off. Another fave of mine and I KNOW them. -Spicy cucumbers: seemed to be situation normal All and all, if you were a regular to China Garden or had dined at the restaurant anytime in the last 6 years, be warned... it's not the same, so adjust your expectations or find somewhere else. Enticed by the high Yelp rating (4.5 stars). Looking from the outside, I was a bit skeptical about my choice. The storefront looked just so-so. When I walked in, I felt the place looked so cramped. And then I thought to myself, "it's a Chinese restaurant." Then everything looked fine, just like any other small local Chinese restaurants. The menu is not extensive, but it has all the popular items. There are some very nice dishes such as the spicy fish, pork belly, spicy lamb, etc. These dishes are all over $10. Since I'm on a business trip, every penny will go to my Amex card. I just go ahead and order without fear. We ordered three items, plus a soup: braised bean sauce fish, stir fried squid, fried Chinese greens, and the egg drop soup. The fish was very tender, chunky, flavorful, and seasoned well with Szechuan peppery sauce. The squid was nicely fried, chewy, and flavorful. The portion was very generous. I was pleasantly surprised to see more squid on the plate than was shown in the pictorial menu. Usually, the reverse is true. I got my money's worth then. The vegetable was cooked nicely. Since it was just plain vegetable, I didn't expect it to be super flavorful. Anyway, eating more vegetables is always good. I have to say the egg drop soup was better or much better than average. It was cooked to order, not like it was prepared in bulk at the beginning of the day. So it was fresh and had a delightful consistency. You could see the yellowish "chunky" egg drops in the soup. Overall, the food was really delicious. The portion was quite generous. The service was fine. We walked stuffed and satisfied. One thing I noticed that there were lots of Chinese students eating there, most likely they were from the University of Tulsa nearby. When you see so many Chinese in a restaurant, you can safely assume that the food is authentic and priced right. Go ahead and give it a try if you're craving for Chinese food. read more
