OK if you want old-school Chinese food this is the place to go in Delray right off military and Atlantic in a small little shopping plaza it has been there for years. They start with their crispy wontons duck sauce and hot mustard, oh my goodness look out for the hot mustard it will literally make your eyes tear and watery. We started with eggrolls they were absolutely delicious hot and fresh, my husband ordered the beef and broccoli and I ordered the Mushu pork. The service is excellent everybody is very accommodating within 15 minutes the food came out fresh in piping hot, we each took the first bite and it was absolutely delicious. Authentic Chinese! You can tell when a place is a little downtrodden/corner-cutty that you're getting the real deal, haha. Staff were all nice to us but a little slow at first to assist us with taking our order. But it gave us time to study the extensive menu. So many numbers and choices! Really made it hard to narrow down... good problem to have! We got three dishes and all three were very tasty and flavorful. Price point was decent considering that our plates each included a cup of soup, spring roll, bowl of rice, ice cream and fortune cookie. Food has gone down markedly since the last time I was there (6 months ago). It came out barely warm. Egg rolls were overcooked and greasy. Soup was room temperature. My boneless spare ribs were slices of pork, covered in sauce not charred or grilled. It tastes like it was on the verge of spoiling. My friend ordered a Miller Lite, after server offered it as a domestic bar, only to be told they were out of Millet Lite! BUT the really disgusting part of our meal was when my friend pulled a piece, about 1 1/2" long, of stiff, heavy wire from her meal. Thankfully she didn't swallow it! The owner's response was to apologize and give some lame excuse about chef having to cook lots of food even when repairs are happening and sometimes these things happen and the can't find pieces the fly off! She offered us a 20% discount on our check. I feel we should not have paid for that meal at all but my friend was paying so.... Then when we went to pay the check the hostess wouldn't give my friend her check or credit card back before the waitress confirmed a tip was left on the table! We tipped the waitress (15%) as it wasn't her fault. But thought it very rude of the hostess to hold the credit card and slip until it was confirmed. I have been to China Gardens 3 times. Twice there was no one there to seat me (including today). Two people came in while I was waiting, One sat himself. The other sat in the lobby. After about 5 minutes I left. I held the door open for a Chinese person who may work there. Hard to say. On my other visit when I actually ate something, I had a strange occurance. We love this place when we go out for Chinese food. It is our favorite place. The lobster here is one of the best buys in town. You can get a 2 pound or a larger lobster for market price and have it cooked. However, you want you also get soup and ice cream. I've brought a number of people to the restaurant and nobody has been disappointed. The owners are very friendly and nice as are the waitresses and wait staff. First time I come here place was a bit dilapidated but I said it's busy let's give it a try as we saw so many people taking out take out orders. So we sit down and we are given a prefixed menu with items that comes with soup egg roll and entree plus rice oh and let me not forget the sugar free ice cream which I didn't take. Ordered Filet Migon $25. First three pieces could not chew it was so tough. The next raw inside. I told the very nice waiter an American with tattoos that it was inedible and he asked me if I would like to send it back and have it made more well cooked. I said no thank you and he asked if I would've liked something else. I said fine. I'll have chicken with broccoli. He took my order and after speaking to the owner, the owner responded. He can have the chicken with broccoli, but he must pay for the filet mignon. I said that's ridiculous and I was ready to leave and he came back and said the owner said not to charge me the difference at that point, I said OK and then when I thought about it, I said this is not a place that I wanna be having dinner so I said please just charge me for the chicken and keep it. I don't want anything coming out of your kitchen? I was afraid not knowing what they would do to my dish. He started to write up the bill and I said to the manager it's a disgrace that they should even be charging me for this dinner they voided it and I left. The rest of the meal was just as bad wonton soup no flavor duck sauce had a funny taste. Will never be going back again. The only reason I went is my favorite restaurants. Customer service. The customer service from the owner was absolutely disgraceful. Her response to my telling her that the lobster that I ordered was bad, was abominable. She said that there are no returns and it's fresh, not hearing me telling her that it was a bad lobster, not that it wasn't fresh. She said, "you don't eat that part" referring to the claws and asked why I wasn't eating the body. I always eat the claws first and save the tail for last. I asked her to kindly take the plate away and she said, "just put it over there." It was more drawn out than that and only then finally asked if I wanted anything else. I explained that had I been met with a different response than the one she gave me that I wanted to order something else. But at that point I wanted nothing from them. The food is AWFUL. I appreciate them having someone who speaks English answering the phone. Joe is awesome - he's multitasking & basically running the show at the door/phone (which is a big job...I know because I've done it many times in my restaurant career). However, his awesome service doesn't make up for the food, which is literally trash. I saw the poor ratings for this place, but I tried it anyway because it was convenient on my way home from work (& I know people can be harsh on Yelp). But the bad reviews are accurate...I came home hungry & ended up ordering delivery from my regular place & waiting for it (which I wish I just did in the first place ) because their food was so atrocious. We went to celebrate a birthday with some friends last night. What a disappointment. I've been going there for over 30 years and this is not the same food as I've had in the past. I have always ordered the chicken and broccoli and it was delicious. Not so this time. It was served in a liquid and had absolutely no taste. I have no idea how they bleach the chicken to get all white meat but it was copy paper white and tasteless. I came here for the first time today with my family and I really enjoyed it! We had a party of 9 and they brought out the food relatively fast for all of us. Starting with the outbreak of Covid we all had to get used to some changes due to price pressures put on restaurants. Now with the rising costs they again are under pressure. We had to become accepting of petty surcharges and rising prices. However after just finishing a take out meal from China Garden I have to draw the line. The food was tasteless , ill prepared, and approaching uneatable. This could not be just a mistake as you must plan to make food this unappealing and different from past offerings. I had stopped going to China Gardens for awhile because it just was not good but after 2 years I decided to try again because I wanted Chinese. First order was Pork Egg Foo Young and was good so I was super happy that maybe things had changed. Sadly, the following week I wanted General Tao's, a bit pricey since there is only one option, but I went for it. Convinced my husband to give them another shot so he got a pint of Special Fried Rice, also order Lo Mein and Crab Rangoon (another one of my favorites. $53 for 2 people which would be fine if it was good. The General Tao's was basically super dry chicken that was put in a very watery sauce that had a somewhat similar taste to GT sauce but not quite. Seemed like the chicken had sat under a heat lamp for hours and they just take the chicken and throw it in a tin with what ever type sauce you order and a few pieces of steamed broccoli. The Crab Rangoon also seamed as if it had been sitting under a heat lamp. Edges were dark brown and the filling was dry like little paste balls. The Fried Rice was not awful but the shrimp did have a strong smell and the rice was a bit dry. Lo Mein was ok but out of the entire order we threw out most of it and did burgers on the grill. I will be going back to Bird's Nest or Nana's noodles. read more
