I have been searching for almost a year to find my go-to Chinese place and this is it. The clincher? Their crab rangoon comes with 9 good sized pieces for $7.50. Now, that might still start a war if you have to share, but they are all for me. And despite how much I love them, even I can't eat that many at once. Which means enough leftover for the next day. They also have Coke products. I wish they had Dr. Pepper but at least it's not a Pepsi-house. I also like their packaging, they use the old school take-out cartons for the fried rice, a recyclable box for other things, and the rangoons come in a wax bag. This place has the rudest young man working there, and he shouldn't be allowed to talk to any customers. I asked him what kind of fried rice comes with the dinner. First of all, he treated me like I was annoying him by asking a question because after the second time I asked, he finally took the ear piece out of his ear. He raveled off something to me, which I couldn't understand, and I said, "Excuse me, could you repeat that, I didn't quite understand you." He flipped his hand at me, put his earpiece back in, and walked away. I said, "So, are you going to answer my question?" He yelled at me and said, "we only have 1 kind of fried rice. " I said, "So, you don't have vegetable or chicken fried rice?" He said no, only 1 kind of rice and walked away. I looked at the menu and they clearly state that they have vegetable, chicken, and shrimp fried rice. I will never go into this place again. It was Christmas day and my parents and I made the cardinal sin of trying to find a place to order carryout. My Mom wasn't feeling up to cooking and wanted to take it easy. I was all set to go back with my limited booty when I got a phone call from D. I told him about the crisis and he reminded me that Chinese restaurants are usually open even on holidays. I tried calling Pekin Pavilion, the dumpy looking place not far from my folks, but they weren't answering their phone. I searched on Yelp and tried another place that didn't answer either. I was thinking D's idea is going to hell in a hand basket. Perhaps even the Chinese restaurants were taking a holiday. But then I called China House who quickly answered. I placed my order for Shrimp Fried Rice, General Tso's Chicken, and some Shanghai noodles. The lady on the phone stated the order would be ready in less than ten minutes. It took me about 12 minutes to get there. China House was semi-hopping too considering the holiday. There were a couple police officers and another lady placing and waiting on orders. A small group of older men were yakking it up in one of their booths talking crap. It was another minute before the order was ready. The food itself was okay, nothing really stood out. In Detroit, there are not many options for Chinese food - China House is a quick and inexpensive option if you are craving soy sauce based stir fry with rice. I'd give it 3.5 stars as I've come to enjoy it as I return. Even though the lunches are only $5-$6 or dinners are $7-$8, the portions are very generous. I ordered a Kung Pao Chicken Dinner which came with fried rice and an eggroll. The Kung Pao Chicken was definitely surprising as the vegetables were mainly chopped celery or broccoli STALKS. I'd recommend the pepper steak or sesame chicken or stop buy during weekday lunch for their "build your own combo buffet." Although there can be a language barrier, the staff is quite friendly and accommodating. Food is made to order and is ready within 5 minutes. If I had the choice though, I'd much rather spend my money at a Panda Express or the nearby Shangri-La. Honestly this is the Chinese food that you get in a shopping mall. They had the large photos of the food and one set price on the menu. You food does not even come on a plate it comes in the carry out container even if you are eating it in. I had about a pound of broccoli in my food. Sure the veggies were fresh, so that was ok. But if I wanted a pound of broccoli I would have went to the farmers market. But honestly anyone who thinks to rate this as good Chinese food has never had enough money to eat anywhere else but McDonalds. As far as clean - the tables were covered in water spots. Sure they were wiped down, with a dirty rag. This is not even Chinese food, so if you want quick mall type food then this is ok if you are running around and just want to get something to eat quick. The shrimp fried rice seems as if it's just fried rice with little pieces of shrimp thrown in it so that was a slight disappointment and I was charged $1.50 extra for the shrimp eggroll and did not receive a shrimp eggroll. Inside there is ample seating, although it can get quite warm in there. The parking lot can feel fairly sketchy, but no issues thus far. This family owned restaurant is a great place to stop by to grab something quick and easy. This is not a "traditional" Chinese food place, much more "americanized" The menu is pretty big and has about anything you could want. Everything is tasty, cheap and you get a lot of food for your money. I often end up making two meals out of one order. Going there for lunch for the buffet is your best bet. $6 gets you 3 decent scoops of various menu items, rice, a drink, and an egg roll. This is of course the Americanized chinese-food place; with General chicken, sesame , and orange, etc. No Hot Pot dishes here. They are very consistent with their dishes flavor. Their General chicken could use more of a kick; so when I go there I ask them to literally cook slices of ginger into my General (Tso's/Gao's; whatever you want to call it) chicken. There sesame chicken is probably their best fried chicken dish. There curry chicken doesn't use fried chicken but strip of chicken breast; if you are looking for a healthy alternative. (and it is good). You get your meals defaulted with fried rice. So remember to tell them you want white rice. Their white rice tastes better than their free vegetable fried rice. Though you can upgrade to shrimp fried rice (or other options). They have a really great lunch hour deal where you can get three different entrees of choice with rice. Though the dishes are pre-made in display at the 'buffet' table. This comes out to about $5; affordable. And you get a variety to enjoy. If you are not going for the 'buffet' and are going to order seaseme chicken during lunch hours: MAKE SURE that they DON'T fill it from the buffet table. Since it is pre-made from at-most a half-hour before, it might not crispy anymore. Purchase more than $5, then show your Wayne State ID and you get ONE free can of soda(yeah only one; even if you got two$6.50 dinner meals; believe me you won't be able to convince the cashier of the logic "you could have bought them separately"). So if you are with a friend, buy your meals separately and show your IDs. They sometimes have tea ready in one of those catering-sized coolers you can dispense from. It's free with your meal, but sometimes they don't' have it out. It is good hot tea. No idea how they manage it. The cashier-lady has that foreign-mother stare-down look upon her ALL THE TIME; just to warn people feint-at-heart. Don't let it intimidate you too much! Just a warning. I would blame it on her nature; but dealing with our Detroit demographic as customers, you could say we nurtured it in her. Overall a great place to eat for that cheap Americanized chinese food binging. Also, with my bias subjective feelings, this place is much better than Dynasty chinese food on the other side of Wayne State campus (and on the other side of warren). Same price-range, but better tasting food. Dynasty is better in presenting their food though. I don't know if this matters, but I don't feel like your expected to tip at this place. It's greasy, cheap and almost everything I've had has been pretty tasty. If you like crab in your crab rangoons, don't get these. These are more like cream cheese rangoons, but still they are very good. The almond chicken and gravy is always good. Though it's not a hard dish to make. The pepper stake is tender and it's a good meat to vegetable ratio. The spring rolls are also very, very tasty. They don't seem to be the nicest people. At times they actually seem short of patience and down right rude. The service though is very fast and the prices are great. I've never gotten to experience the lunch buffet but besides the fried chicken and French fries (which is a little weird even for Chinese American cuisine) I hear its a pretty good buffet. The diner is clean and allows you to eat without feeling like you need to spray disinfectant before you sit down. The bathrooms...unisex and very clean.
