Shrimp Fried Rice, Shanghai Noodles, and General Tso's Chicken.
    Eric G.

It was Christmas day and my parents and I made the cardinal sin of trying to find a place to order carryout. My Mom wasn't feeling up to cooking and wanted to take it easy. A lot of places (as they should be) were closed for Christmas. But it didn't mean we weren't hungry. In desperation I drove to the nearest Walgreens (yeah I feel sorry for the person that has to work but definitely glad they were an option) and picked up some tortilla chips and salsa poopooing on getting frozen pizza or Nice wings. I was all set to go back with my limited booty when I got a phone call from D. I told him about the crisis and he reminded me that Chinese restaurants are usually open even on holidays. I tried calling Pekin Pavilion, the dumpy looking place not far from my folks, but they weren't answering their phone. I searched on Yelp and tried another place that didn't answer either. I was thinking D's idea is going to hell in a hand basket. Perhaps even the Chinese restaurants were taking a holiday. But then I called China House who quickly answered. I placed my order for Shrimp Fried Rice, General Tso's Chicken, and some Shanghai noodles. The lady on the phone stated the order would be ready in less than ten minutes. It took me about 12 minutes to get there. China House was semi-hopping too considering the holiday. There were a couple police officers and another lady placing and waiting on orders. A small group of older men were yakking it up in one of their booths talking crap. It was another minute before the order was ready. The food itself was okay, nothing really stood out. But I was grateful they were there as an option.

Honestly this is the Chinese food that you get in a shopping mall. They had the large photos of the food and one set price on the menu. You food does not even come on a plate it comes in the carry out container even if you are eating it in. I had about a pound of broccoli in my food. Sure the veggies were fresh, so that was ok. But if I wanted a pound of broccoli I would have went to the farmers market. But honestly anyone who thinks to rate this as good Chinese food has never had enough money to eat anywhere else but McDonalds. As far as clean - the tables were covered in water spots. Sure they were wiped down, with a dirty rag. This is not even Chinese food, so if you want quick mall type food then this is ok if you are running around and just want to get something to eat quick. The ingredients were fresh. And for sit down. The seating was not even up to par with a Taco Bell. It is less than Coney Island style. More like sitting in a barbershop type of atmosphere. They have no air running on a hot day they opened the door... Service consists of the person who takes your order bringing the carry out containers to your (I wouldn't even call it a booth). And the zip code is 48201 not 48218 but the address is correct.

It did not have carrots, peas or green onions at all. I had a rarely large order. They do not provide plates or cutlery. The store front is not sanitary. You can't park on Woodward, so you risk tearing up your car driving through the alley and significantly deep potholes holes to park and pick up your order. It's in the new center area, so I was really DISAPPOINTED. I stopped eating Chinese food a long time ago because of the lack of service and connections to the communities they serve. My mother wanted shrimp fried rice, so I thought I would take a chance. Don't EAT here u less you don't have a choice.

We've sat at the bar a few times, but honestly, it's a great experience either way. As a vegan, I really appreciate the variety of options. The fried tofu has an excellent texture and is served with perfectly fluffy rice. I usually go for the vegetable spring rolls-crispy and paired with a fantastic dipping sauce-and the sweet and sour tofu, which is always a standout. My husband typically orders the sesame chicken and is always pleased. Service is consistently quick and enjoyable. While prices are a bit on the higher side (around $20+ per entrée), the quality, flavor, and convenience, especially before a game, make it well worth it. If you're up for a short walk and want a delicious pregame meal, this is a great spot to check out!

I got the Chinese spare ribs which were tender and had a nice taste, but were on the dry side for me. There wasn't enough sauce. The French fries were good with the special dipping sauce it came with. The service was nice. I do think it's a bit overpriced for the portions you get, especially for the dumplings. Overall a good vibes place to go for date nights or with a group of friends though.

This place is absolutely my vibe. The staff are fantastic, friendly, and very skilled at their jobs. Beverages were refilled, we were checked in with, and felt taken care of. The real star of the show was the food. I came with two of my sons, and we all really enjoyed our ramen bowls. Hubby and I laughed at how many times we zipped past the restaurant without noticing it. My husband and I both ordered the Major Tom Khatsu, which has a coconut chicken broth base. The chicken katsu pieces were the perfect level of crispy without being heavily breaded. There was also a nice little kick to the dish, which made it so, so yummy. Our friends got the Shoyu ramen with pork belly, and the Corned Beef ramen. The Shoyu dish seemed to be more enjoyable. Though we stuck with water, cans of Faygo pop seemed to be the drink offerings - other than alcoholic beverages. Areas for improvement include the waiting. Johnny Noodle King is a small place, with a main dining area and then what seems to be a bar area attached. We initially waited by the door for our table along with another small group (we were a party of four). We were then asked to go to the bar area to wait so that it would clear the door, but found it interesting how we were asked to move but not the other group. Also, we were standing away from the doormat we were not obstructing anyone's movements. The wait was long, and we asked if we could order food to the bar area (as opposed to waiting for a table). We were told 'no', yet there was a table full of patrons who were eating. There was no notification system, so our friend had to keep going to the front to see if our table was ready. Don't get me wrong; 'hooray' to Johnny Noodle King for having such great business volume. However, they need a way to manage it so that people will not be put off. Once we were seated, we did have good service from our waitstaff, and the food was very good. My husband and I plan to return to explore more of the menu. Hopefully, we can pick a time of day when waiting won't be such a big issue.
