The chicken was perfectly fried and was definitely white meat. The sauce was tangy with a little more spice than I was used to for this dish, but it was yummy. I also got a small egg drop soup, which was good too. It didn't have any peas or carrots in it, and I was thankful for that. No issues with the service or anything else. They did forget to include a spoon for my soup, which was a little annoying since we had it delivered to a hotel and didn't have kitchen access. But not a big deal overall. This spot is conveniently located on Woodward Ave near the sports arenas. A colleague and I decided to try their lunch specials this afternoon. The food is decent as far as a neighborhood spot goes. Literally a hole in the wall restaurant. Close to the Vietnamese restaurant on the block, same side. If you don't pay attention, you'll miss it. Service was friendly and food was delicious! Incredible flavor Mongolian beef and great pork dumplings!!! Excellent food. The lady at the register was screaming in Chinese at the guys in back cooking behind the curtain. I just have to say it was fun speaking Chinese to the kids of the owner, while they didn't understand they were eager to please the guests! Well, So today 4/16/2023 I wanted so chinese food. I went to Top China One firstly because the restaurant I wanted to go to was closed, Top China is by my house. I walked in and someone said, "May I help you", but I didn't see anyone. Well long story short, it was a boy seemingly 7-8 yrs old. I looked through the small space of the window that wasn't covered by menus and paper and the adult male I'm assuming his father was shooshing the boy back to the front to take my order. At the end of the day I ordered low mein and pineapple chicken. The chicken was dry, he gravy that I also purchased taste greasely and the low mein had NO favor. I called to explain the situation and was immediately met with aggression , " YOU GET NO REFUND, YOU CAN"T HAVE SAMPLE, hollering and screaming. Hung up on me. This place hasn't stopped operation since COVID began, but their operation could use some work. We called ahead and placed an order for pick up. The worker said that it would be 20 mins, so we arrived 25 mins later (to give some extra time). When we arrived, it was packed and there were people waiting outside (there isn't much standing room inside and people weren't socially distancing themselves inside). When we finally got up to the cash register, they asked us what we ordered and were yelling at us to yell our order to them through the protective plastic they have up everywhere. Basically, there's no point in calling ahead because we had to wait for our food and you pretty much place your order when you arrive. Not very organized. The time it took from placing the order to receiving it, took about 1 hour (35 mins of that was at the establishment). As for the food, it was delicious! My crab ragoons were cold when I got them, but I was so hungry that I didn't care. The general tsos was a great portion and tasted great! I just got delivery from this place. We got the Hawaii chicken wings with fries, bourbon grill chicken, general Tso chicken, and the Singaporean noodles. We got our food in 50mins from placing our order. I wouldn't order delivery again, since it took a bit long. The Beau really liked the bourbon chicken, but I thought it was really sweet. The Hawaii chicken was juicy and good, but way to much sauce. General Tso chicken was standard. The biggest disappointment was the Singaporean noodles. I don't know if this is their take on dish, but it was lacking in shrimp, more flavor, and authenticity I was looking for. Also, I was pretty peeved that they forgot the fries for my chicken wings. I've been eating here for the past year since moving to the Downtown area and this has become my favorite. I am not sure if the gentleman's name but he always remembers me each time I call, has the food ready QUICKLY and the prices are great for the amount of food you receive. I pass up two other Chinese locations which are closer to me just for his food. Plus with COVID-19 you are able to call when you are outside and the food is passed right through the window. My favorite Detroit chinese! If you read through a lot of the reviews of chinese restaurants there is one common theme- its dirty. Not this place. Im not saying that its a five star restaurant with fancy white swan napkins but I also don't want to run away when i enter the place. To truly explain the four stars I will admit that I am an avid fan of Chinese/ American food. This place will give you everything you expect and crave from bread-fried chicken and msg sauces. Everything looks shady and cheap. Hard to understand because they have some speaker system but the young lady has terrible accent and very hard to understand what she was saying. Service time was decent, this is a take out joint. If ur r looking for Chinese dive food then this is ur place, more like an after bar joint if they r open that late which I doubt. Came in late at night and ordered the house special friend rice , wonton soup, bean curd house with rice. After ordering we waited about 10 to 16 minutes tops and got our food. They cooked it upon ordering and it's fantastic. It's going to be a bit oily and very juicy but that's what chinese food is. For the price you pay, it tastes amazing. Don't expect it to feel and taste like a fifty dollar meal. For a quick bite that's cheap this is definitely a place to go. Also, whether they use MSG or not, there is a common misconception that it is extremely bad and unhealthy for you. Do some research and you'll find that it's not the case. In fact, it's in many popular american brands and chains add MSG to their food if you look closely enough at the ingredients. Downtown Detroit suffers from a lack of quality Chinese carryout, with most spots barely passing the edible test. Top China One is the exception. The food is fresh, fast and consistently good. The sauces are above average, with the exception of the sauce they use for the sesame/orange/general tso. Avoid these dishes and you'll have a good experience. The fried rice is okay but not great, still better than average for the city. My favorite dishes are the Thai Chicken (fried and spicy), Hunan Beef or Chicken (stir fry with garlic brown sauce), Singapore Rice Noodle (rice noodle combination with curry), Almond Boneless Chicken (all white meat, great gravy) and the Moo Go Gai Pan (Chicken and mixed veggi tables in white wine sauce). While G was on lunch break from the DSO, we met at Top China 1. It's your ordinary Chinese restaurant with typical Chinese items. One thing that they have is a "buffet to go." It's only to go, so you only get one plate. It's only $4.25 for one item and $6 for two items with fried rice. I ended up just ordering off the menu. I had chicken and broccoli with fried rice. G had shrimp and broccoli with fried rice. To be honest, it was pretty much what you would expect, no better, no worse. The fried rice was good, as was the broccoli. The chicken was not too great in my opinion. My fortune cookie did say that luck was headed my way. I am in a sweepstake for $7,000 or $250,000. Maybe I'll win this summer! read more
