I had a hankering for beef with scrambled eggs chow fun. Being born & raised in San Francisco you can probably understand (well, maybe) my frustration when I try different Chinese restaurants around town. There is an abundance of excellent quality Chinese food in San Francisco that finding similar quality Chinese food in Novato makes it hard to satisfy that cuisine craving for me. After calling China Village on San Marin (who say they can't make this particular dish...really?) I tried my luck with China House on Grant. For delivery I ordered it through DoorDash along with their Salt & Pepper Pork Chops. On the app I specifically ordered the Beef Chow Fun where I added instructions to add scrambled eggs to it. How hard is that? When I received my delivered order I opened up my boxes and discovered that they did not follow my simple instructions. Most restaurants would call you directly if there are any questions about your order, but sadly China House did not. If there is an up-charge for an additional ingredient I would've gladly paid for it. I called about my order after getting it and the person who answered said he was unaware of my specific request in the instructions and said I should've called them. Well I guess I should've, but aaargh! The food ... chow fun was just average, noodles were very dry, but beef was tender. The salt & pepper pork chops were average as well, but tender and still crispy when I received it and large portion. Nice hint of the Chinese five spice flavor in the seasoning as well. Lesson learned for next time. And still on the hunt. read more

Every time I order here their food comes nice and fresh. And they give you so much food. You can eat off of it for at least 3 days. I've tried almost everything on their menu. You do have to go and pick it up. I'm sure they delivered but I've never had it delivered because it's so close to my house. But again, everything is so fresh. And the prices are very reasonable. Some friends told me that this is their favorite place in all of Novato for Chinese food. The husband of my friend is a prominent business person in Marin county and when he calls, they make him the best possible version of their food, so that was my first taste of this place. The portions were generous, and I was very impressed. I had the seafood supreme. Weeks later, when I called to place an order. I ordered the same dish, and came by to pick it up. There is no longer a restaurant here--only a pandemic-style pick up window. When I bit into the fish, it had a fishy smell and bitter taste that told me it was over the hill. It was enough to put me off the rest of the order which got thrown in the compost. By that time, I was back in Sonoma County, and grateful that there are very good Chinese restaurants right here in town. No photos for this event. I thought the food was good. I've been looking for a place for some good Chinese food and they have not disappointed me. You do receive a lot of food once you order because it'll last you at least a couple of days. That's how much food you get. Everything I've ever gotten there has been nice and fresh and the fact that I can just swing by and pick it up is even better. You do have to plan it because they are closed on Sunday, Monday and Thursdays and you do have to order early to have pick up the same day. But I honestly think it's worth it. They are super friendly and love that they have a frequent buyer card that gets stamped for how much you purchase to eventually get a free menu food item. Sometimes I wish they would open up their dining room for us to eat in for lunch, but can totally understand that this walk-up service just works better for them. Had never been here before and I don't think I even knew this place existed but wanted to try a different Chinese place in Novato. I don't like to leave bad reviews but we tried this place twice first time it was not good but we thought maybe it was a bad day. We gave them another shot tonight because frankly Min Yen was not open tonight. I grew up in the city so amazing Chinese food is everywhere. So yah I am really particular about Chinese food especially since we don't order it a lot. Tonight we gave China House another try. And it was bad again. We literally ended up throwing away more than half our order. The egg rolls - soggy. The pot stickers the size of our hand stuffed with inedible pork and pasty wrap. The fried shrimp was good. The chow mein rubbery and had zero flavor and the fried rice was mush. We got the won ton soup and it was bland but I added so much soy sauce for flavor. My daughter loves Chinese and she is mom this is not good. She actually spit out the chow mein her fav. So unfortunately these are the facts. We will not be ordering for them again. We had the Hon Kong Style Shrimp Noodles, Walnut Shrimp and Sautéed Green Beans. The only thing that was lacking was a consistent sauce on the noodles in the Hong Kong Noodles. But other than that it had a really good taste. Everything else was also had a really good taste, nicely cooked, consistent throughout not overly salty. Really solid Chinese food. Close to the worst Chinese food ever. Who gave them a review ? I went there and ordered egg rolls kung pao chicken and combination fried rice. I paid the mandatory 18 % tip on a pick up order. Took it to our hotel. Egg rolls? Meh. Kung pao chicken? Gooey chicken with onions celery and zucchini. No red chili I or king pao sauce. I eat msg but this was an over dose. Then the rice. It was gooey short grain rice. A little chicken. A little beef. One shrimp. Gooey blob. My dog refused to eat this garbage. We were tired and just tossed it. We only buy from China House now. They are a sweet family and we are always happy with what we get. Walnut Prawn - lots of nuts and prawns and genuinely the best my mom has had (and it's her favorite dish so she has had lots over the years). Hot and Sour soup - always a classic. For soups a small is one container and a large is two containers. So we often get a large so we have soup for lunch the next day. :) Wor Wonton soup - practically perfect in every way. Crab Puffs - it's impossible for these to not be tasty. Chicken or Vegetable Moo Shu - super tasty and there is enough for days! The portions are always generous. Veggie or Chicken chow mein - always good. General Tso's Chicken - not my favorite of the places I've been, but still a solid option. Broccoli Beef - I don't eat beef often but the family members that do say it is good. Make sure you call them directly to order! Ordering through apps reduces or removes the profit small businesses make. If you call to order and go to pick up or have the restaurant deliver, then all your money goes to the local business and local economy. read more

Really good Chinese food and huge portions. We moved from the city and Novato is a food desert but this place is a life/time saver. As busy working people, we don't have time to cook every night and this is our go-to place for delicioius chinese food that will last us a few meals. We get a lot of their veggie dishes: deluxe veggies, veggie chow mein, and beef and broccoli. One of our favorites is the tofu with meat sauce. We get take out once a week from here. I don't think they do dine-in. We call in our order ahead of time and it is always ready in 15 -20 mins. Highly recommend! read more

We pretty much always get Chinese take-out from China Palace (CP), and have regretted it when we haven't, so it was with apprehension that I ordered from China House (CH). Thankfully, there was nothing to worry about...except deciding who to get it from next time! All our usual dishes were as good or better, and the quantity was even more plentiful, but significantly less expensive. Making the switch would be a no brainer if it were just my husband and me...but the kids (11, 13, 15) have opinions, and they were divided (like with just about everything else, lol). Two of them liked the new salt and pepper pork chops better. All of them liked that the chow mein had less veggies, but preferred the chicken in it from CP. They were split on the noodles themselves. Only one of them tried the walnut prawns, which she gave a thumbs up. The biggest no-go was that CH doesn't have a favorite dish: lettuce blossoms. The kids don't eat spicy food, so my husband and I had the hot and sour soup - I thought it was more flavorful. We both agreed that the Mongolian beef was nearly identical. All this plus steamed rice for two was $50 at CH; it would have been $70 at CP. We may alternate between them - CP when we are craving certain dishes and CH when we want the works... read more

Really I really enjoy going to China House for the chow fun. The owner knows I like chow fun with crispy tofu and vegetables. And she and her husband make that up for me in a nice style just the way I like it. Just the right amount of oil not too salty and full of delicious vegetables -this is one of my favorite dishes in town. I really enjoy when a restaurant does this right. Especially when you can find a Chinese restaurant outside of the city that makes your favorite dish. They do other things well too as we ordered some vegetable dishes from there. They are very vegan friendly and can customize dishes for you. However I typically get the chow fun dish so my ability to comment about other dishes is a bit limited. However if you want some good Chinatown flavor on a noodle with vegetables I suggest you go here. read more

Food was great. Got takeout on a Sunday night and it was ready in about 40 minutes just like they said. Mongolian beef, sautéed string beans and veggie chow mein were really tasty. My kids loved the fried won tons but I like them thinner and crispier than these were. Kung Pao chicken was decent but not spicy enough. Portions are huge. Have you ever lived in a place and passed the same little hole in the wall restaurant a hundred times thinking "what's that place like??", but never going in? Yeah, I thought you did. Me too. And that's exactly how it was for us and China House, when we found ourselves wandering down Grant and getting hungry one day last week. We normally would go over to Ming Yen, one of our old favorites, but peeked into the window here and saw they were just opening for lunch and decided to take a shot. We weren't disappointed! Lunch specials were very reasonably priced, and smelled and looked great when they arrived. My chicken was tender, veggies crisp, sauces light and tasty and the rice ... very rice-y (not much to say about white rice). My darling bride had spicy prawns, and she gave them two thumbs up as well. It seemed that like us, most Novatoans don't realize what's behind that unassuming door - if you life in northern Marin and haven't checked out this place yet give it a shot, and let me know what you think! Based on some of the other reviews I've read there's a lot of catching up there I need to do. The owner was very nice, her young daughter doing homework at one of the tables was precious. Good Chinese food on Grant Ave. Good customer service, and both the owner and her husband are very friendly. They often have their kids at one of the corner tables-they're so cute! This place seems a very popular take-out restaurant. One thing I like is that they've posted pictures of many of their dishes on the windows which makes ordering so much easier. I've eaten in the restaurant (simple diner-like decor, not fancy at all) and ordered take out, the food is always hot, ample, and tasty. This place is everything you'd think of from a Chinese restaurant; it's cute and quaint, offers the typical greasiness you'd expect from Chinese food, and their price point is spot on. With their customer service having always been pretty friendly, they're definitely better than average. I usually go here for their large won-ton soup. The dumplings are made just right and the portion is definitely filling. There's one lady that I always see working there and she's really nice, nice enough for me to want to acknowledge her in this post. If i ever feel like eating very good chow fun, i would come here! The chow fun combo with bean curd is my favorite but they seem to run out of the chow fun noodle like during mid afternoon from time to time after lunch so either they don't make enough or the chow fun it's very popular as i been told they run out more than once so i end up getting their chow main instead. It's a family business and the people who works here are very nice and pleasant. The food can take awhile if they are busy. I also like their won ton soups, hot and tasty. Thought their egg rolls were just okay as they were cooked too long. Very good value! The prices here are cheaper than most other Asian restaurants we been to. When the word 'cheap food' is used here, it means the price is cheap, not the quality of the food compare to others that charge more. Yes, even cheaper than Panda Express and i much rather come here if i want good food but the wait will be longer. This place is located across the street from La Michoacana in the downtown area on Grant. It can also be difficult to find an open parking space close by on either side sometimes with all the other business close by and such but it just depends on when you go.
