I had stopped ordering from this place for a while because the food had really gone downhill. Recently, though, they've made a big improvement -- everything was cooked perfectly and full of flavor! There aren't many good spots around here that I actually like, so I was really happy with my order this time. The service is always amazing, but for me, that's not enough -- the food should be just as good. I asked for my food not to be as dry (which was my main issue before), and I'm glad they listened! Every item we got was delicious. The milk tea tasted just right but the tapioca pearls could be a little bit softer or more chewy. It was still good and not under cooked; I just like it more chewy. The beef stew, banh mi, and shrimp spring rolls tastes just like the Vietnamese restaurants I've gone to in SF. The papaya salad tasted authentic too, but I probably would ask for a little more dressing on the side because I like more fish sauce. :) Service was good. The restaurant is a long row of booths that stretches from Grant to the parking lot on Cain Lane. The shape is different but it works well because you can enter or exit the back of the restaurant if you parked in the lot in the back. The booths are a little tight. I accidentally kicked the person across from me, but at least I didn't have to sit at the very edge of the seat to get close to the table. They play music but it's not too loud that you can't hear the other person speaking. As another person mentioned, the tip guide on the first receipt is based on the subtotal, but the credit card terminal tip is calculated on the total including tipping on the tax. So you if don't want to tip on the tax, then you have to hit custom tip. The credit card machine company should fix this on the credit card terminal. read more

Overall not great experience. It's a Vietnamese/Chinese spot so it was a mixed menu. They also had some Thai dishes too. In retrospect a bit of a red flag. Given the 3 cuisines represented I asked the server what their 2-3 best dishes were and he said everything was good. A good place will tell you their top 2-3 dishes right away. After some back and forth her recommended the beef/bbq pork pho which was the #1 on their noodle soup section. I'd never had a beef/pork combo pho so I went for it. First, there was a shockingly small amount of meat in the dish. Second, the broth was very bland. Skimpy on the herbs too. The inner layer of the crepe was cooked perfectly, but the brunt charred outer layer made it borderline inedible. The food was okay, but for the price, the food was not very good. I had a bowl of pho which reminded me (sort of) of the big, piping hot bowls I used to order in Mountain View for $6 back in the day. This bowl was about $19 and I was given a smaller portion of add-ins (basil, mint and bean sprouts) than I was expecting. It was fairly meaty, but something felt missing. Not sure what. I was lunching with our consultant and he ordered something that looked like orange chicken-it tasted very mediocre according to him. It was a smaller sized portion, while my pho was pretty large. The food was so-so/meh, but both of us found the very sour looks we got from the woman employee so off-putting that our consultant (who does not talk bad about people) said he would not want to return. Maybe she has RBF, but mediocre food and a sour face needs improvement. There are plenty of other places to eat. Not recommended. Won't be back. read more

I used to visit their Corte Madera location all the time. Ever since I moved out of state, I have dreams about their spicy beef and brisket pho. The broth is so comforting and rich in flavor. Today was the last straw for me at Le Maison de la Reine in Novato. My family and I have been coming here since their grand opening. The restaurant advertises Vietnamese fusion, but the food has always been just mediocre. The pork banh mi today was terrible. Overly sour pickled vegetables that soaked into the bread, making it soggy, and the grilled pork was full of tendon and fat, making it basically inedible. We kept going back only because Novato has very few Asian restaurants. For over a year, I've also noticed a consistent issue with their billing. The amount shown when paying never matches the amount on the receipt, there's always about a $2 difference, and it happens every single visit. Today I finally asked about it. The two women at the counter spoke to each other in their native language first, then explained that the difference was because of the tip button I selected. They said the 18% tip I pressed should match the itemized receipt, but the transaction receipt still showed an extra $2 added on top. They told me I could "customize" my tip, but that doesn't explain the consistent extra charges. Customers should be able to trust that a restaurant is honest with their billing. If they've been adding around $2 extra per bill, think about how that adds up per day, week, month, and year. SEE PIC OF RECEIPT ATTACHED: Notice the discrepancy in the tip amount charged ($12.98) vs tip amount in the suggested "guide" ($11.88). If you do the math, they are advertising tip based on subtotal. But the charge of the tip percentage is based off the subtotal PLUS tax charge. You are not supposed to tip in tax charges. For anyone going, check your receipt! At this point, I'm extremely disappointed and will not be returning. read more

My favorite restaurant in Novato. I realized it was finally time to review this place. They're consistent, have wonderful service & the food is delicious. They have an extensive menu which is nice if you're craving different foods. Best wonton noodle soup I've had from a restaurant (& I've had my fair share of them). It has a nice light and umami broth (with bits of garlic which I'm a big fan of). These are my favorite kind of noodles as well, perfectly cooked. They don't skip out on the filling in the wontons so you'll definitely be satiated. 5/5 My boyfriend ordered the Spicy Beef & BBQ Pork Noodle Soup. The staff were very friendly and the service was great. We had a large party of 11. We sat in the back room which was obviously not used except for larger parties, it was cluttered with storage and kind of messy. The front looked inviting. The menu is a little confusing with a very diverse amount of choices. It seemed the choices were more focused on the fusion and less on Vietnamese. The food was delayed and from the first dish to the last was about 30 minutes. Most of the opinions of the food were that it was just okay. So tonight im leaving a review for LA Maison.. Wow! They really don't disappoint. When you walk in they are smiling and friendly.. We didn't wait at all on a Saturday night. The restaurant is clean, and has comfortable seating. I dont always visit the bathroom, but I have to add it was sparkling clean. Ok here it goes..The restaurant is clean and the staff invites you in, very welcoming.. We sat at our seat and immediately got water and asked if we wanted any appetizers..We had the variety tray with egg rolls, salt and pepper chicken wings, etc..very good, the pork over cabbage was very tasty. I ordered the Udon noodles with beef and veggies, so so good..My guy Pete had the Chicken Phu..He loved the broth all was fresh and delicious. When we were done, we ordered a Bahn MI for my son and 2 brown sugar milk teas.. Wow what an awesome dinner.. Considering prices in most places. I really feel that their prices are reasonable, with great food and great service and a clean environment, it's an A plus for me! Had lunch with the family here on Saturday afternoon. The restaurant is long and narrow. We were seated closer to the front. They have an extensive menu including pho, lunch rice plates, and various other dishes. I ordered the Kung Pao chicken with brown rice. It was tasty with the right amount of spice. A nice addition to the local cuisine scene. Let me start by saying this is more like a Vietnamese/Chinese Fusion spot. But it's still good! The Food: Overall, I liked it! I ordered the Kung Pao Chicken (which I was surprised finding something like this at a Vietnamese place). I was a little suspect but it was lovely! The vegetables were fresh and not overcooked but also not undercooked, the sauce was not overpowering and complimented the flavors & textures of the dish. Of course the celery and peanuts added the crunch that you like to have to offset the beef and chicken (It was a combo plate). That with a side of rice and and an Elysian Space Dust made the dining experience really enjoyable. My wife got the Beef Pho...because Pho. She liked it but she made a comment that it was a little heavy on the cinnamon in the broth. I found that a little interesting. My daughter had the same but kids size and she doesn't care as long as there's noodles involved lol. Again, because Pho. Ambiance: The location used to be a druid hall and it's in one of the oldest buildings in downtown Novato. However the new owners really cleaned up thee place. It is narrow and deep layout so lots of booths on one side of the entry/mid section and more seating in the rear. If your in the front/mid area you will be right next to the kitchen. My family and I don't mind the noise and activity because we're all foodies. If you are sensitive to that kind of stuff maybe the back is more your jam. Service: Very attentive. We had 3 servers and they were ON IT!!! I think we ordered and I only had 2 sips of my beer before my plate showed up. Of course the plates coming out were staggered but I didn't mind and the differential between plates coming out wasn't bad. Location: It is downtown Novato so expect terrible parking at times. However as stated above, I think it's a great addition to the local community. In closing, I'm glad La Maison De La Riene is here. Some of the local asian cuisine isn't great. In the downtown area you have great options next door for Thai, Sushi and Indian. Other than that, other offerings are lacking and I think this will fill a void nicely. The flavors here are simplified compared to other Vietnamese restaurants. It says it's Vietnamese Fusion but I think that mostly means the menu is a combination of cultures. So there's Kung Pao Chicken and Thai Iced Tea, for example. But a bowl of pho or vermicelli noodles shouldn't really need any fusion. They were out of bahn mi which was disappointing because two of us wanted to order them. I would have liked to have tried them. The yellow curry didn't have a lot of flavor. My mom added cilantro and pepper to it but said she couldn't taste much of the curry flavor. The spicy beef pho was good but without lots of condiments, it didn't excel. We enjoyed it but the broth could be richer. The vermicelli bowls were a little disappointing. They don't come with any mint or cilantro. However, we asked for them and were brought a generous plate of basil, cilantro and limes. That helped. But the rice noodles were slightly undercooked. The pork was fine, just not terribly flavorful, and cut into very small pieces. The egg rolls were good with a good balance of ingredients. The shrimp was cooked perfectly with a slight char. The nuoc cham (fish sauce and lime) had very little fish sauce so it was too mild. It didn't add much to the dish. The Thai iced tea and Thai milk tea with boba were both above average. The serving of Thai iced tea is large. Service was fine but we had to get our server's attention a couple times. I'm not used to seeing staff wear earbuds so I wasn't sure why that was. But the staff were helpful and we appreciated them being open the day before Thanksgiving. read more

This place is more Vietnamese fusion than Vietnamese. This restaurant used to be in Corte Madera at the Town Center, but they recently moved to Novato. Novato was definitely lacking Vietnamese food. But this place is not strictly Vietnamese... Anyway! I've been here twice with my parents now. Not sure why someone said the service was not friendly. Everyone I've seen here has been friendly. (The male servers seemed to be quieter than the female servers but not rude, more reserved maybe.) And everyone has been helpful when we ordered food, drinks, or were served food/drinks. The first visit was still during opening week. Service was a little bit slow, but I give them a lot of credit for still getting our food and drinks out in a timely manner and everything was correct. Second visit was much improved (and only a week later). A server even recognized us and we sat at the same table. First visit we had the crepe, lemongrass chicken lunch plate, spicy beef soup (but spice on the side), and la Maison beef. Crepe was a little soggy for my taste and had too many onions, wouldn't order again. Soup was flavorful (but not like Kevin's in SF flavorful). Lemongrass chicken and la maison beef were my favorites! Would recommend trying those 2 dishes. The lunch plate comes with rice which was enough to also split with the la maison beef dish. Second visit we had the fresh shrimp rolls, lemongrass beef chow mein, shrimp and beef noodle soup (chicken broth), and a fish in claypot dish with eggplant. Shrimp rolls are always good! The noodles and soup were just ok. And the fish/eggplant was very tasty. The noodles/fish dishes were a little on the sweet side. I prefer savory. Overall, I think the food is good, maybe not the most authentic Vietnamese, but tasty. I just think some dishes taste better than others. Usually you can't go wrong with anything lemongrass. The soups are good but don't expect the same amount of flavor in the broth as places in SF. But you have to remember that you're in Marin, and they are good at catering to the main demographic here. ;) The interior looks like the last few restaurants that have been here. Booths in front, tables in back. Oh, and most entrees are in the teens for pricing so not too bad. read more

I am very happy to see a new Vietnamese place in Novato, since the closest has been Saigon Village in San Rafael. We checked out La Maison their first week and we were quite pleased with our visit. The Pho was delicious, and I had a rice plate that combined deep fried springroll, pork, and shrimp - a lovely way to get a feel for the way different foods are prepared. Every one was a winner, I'm happy to say! I am looking forward to visiting again and trying some more dishes so I can tell you my most and least favorites! I came here for a work dinner. The service was excellent. They attended to us very quickly and found a spot so all 6 of us could sit comfortably. We ended up being seated in the back, which was nice because there was a TV back there that had a loop of various foods being prepared and cooked, which was nice entertainment. For appetizers, we got the spring rolls, the La Maison Special, and the Calamari. The calamari was the highlight for me with some lemon and soy sauce. I didn't try the other items because I don't eat pork, but my coworker gave those things positive reviews. For dinner I got the string bean Beef which came with white rice. It was a great size portion, definitely enough for even two meals. The taste was a bit lacking in my opinion with a hint of sweetness (I don't like sweet food). But I added soy sauce which made it more to my liking. Everyone else also seemed very pleased with their meals as well. We ordered takeout tonight to give this new addition to Novato restaurants a try. When we went to pick it up, the restaurant was completely full and there were 10-12 people waiting for takeout! Novato is starved for new restaurants! Really this is 3.5 stars but since we can't give halves, I'm rounding up. We can't comment on the service obviously but they are brand new with just opening on the 8th anyway. I got the Vietnamese Crepe and my husband got the Singapore Street Noodles. Mine was a gluey mess because it was all steamed. I like a crispy crepe. But I will have to try it in the restaurant and see if it's better. However, the flavor was still really good. I would def want it again. It is an app size though, so next time will have to order something else as well. My husband really enjoyed his Singapore Noodles. La Maison opened about a week ago. They moved from their old location in Town Center (Corte Madera) to this new location in downtown Novato. It was busy and it was a Monday. Some of that may be related to it being a new restaurant in town. Novato is a bit of culinary desert so this place is very welcome. This is a Vietnamese place but they have many items on the menu that sound like they are Chinese food. I've seen that in other non-Chinese Asian restaurants. They have a lot of seating so we didn't have to wait long. Because of all the Chinese items on the menu, I asked for a recommendation for a Vietnamese dish. Our server recommended the chicken with basil. It was good but didn't have a lot of flavor. I think it may be because it didn't have MSG in it. I will sacrifice flavor for a dose of MSG :) By the way, I did inquire about MSG (after the fact via email). Apparently, they put MSG in some of their dishes but not all. You can ask when you are ordering. My friend ordered the spicy beef pho which he has been enjoying at this restaurant for many years now. I liked this place and it's a good addition to the dining scene in Novato. I will return. read more

I've tried a few things from this place to finally say that, I don't think I'm a fan of fusion restaurants. I've tried their pho, papaya salad, and banh mi. The papaya said was pretty traditional, but the pho and banh mi were not. I'd rather go to an authentic Vietnamese restaurant for both dishes. Not to say these items weren't good, but it's just not as good as the authentic flavors. The price point is also not worth it, compared to if I were to go to Saigon Village in San Rafael. Delicious! I ordered the La Maison spicy beef & bbq pork rice noodle soup. It was delicious! Filling and flavorful.

The inside was nice and clean, lots of space between tables. My companion ordered the udon noodles with chicken and I tried the soft shell crab salad. We also tried a matcha tea smoothie. The udon noodles were very salty. The salad with the soft shell crab was bland and the crab tasted a bit fishy. I wouldn't order either of these dishes again. It took a long time to get the check.
