We had a very unfortunate experience at this restaurant. It is not at all clean, which bothered me. The food is mediocre - but not terrible. (We had orange chicken that was so tough to chew that it was like eating deep fried jerky, but the hot & sour soup was good.) Service is non-existent. The soda was flat and tasted terrible, but no one came to check with us about refills or to find out if our food was okay. The staff was pleasant when they took our order but we never saw them again. The food is promising but preparation definitely needs to be adjusted/perfected. If they can give everything a deep clean, learn to check on their tables and add a few tweaks to food prep, this could be a much nicer establishment. read more

Sorry....the food tastes terrible (like cleaning products?) Dishes with vegetables weren't even cooked plus bok choy had a white film on edges (mold?) carrots and squash (raw too) were discolored (possibly very old?). Chicken in chicken fried rice looked like what is served in Subway sandwich shops...yuck!! It's no wonder they threw so many soy sauce & hot mustard packets into pick up bag. Had a not so great experience the first time gave them a second chance and BOY I shouldn't have done that: Today... got delivered the wrong order called and let them know right away. Asked what to do with the one I got and they said throw it away. So I did. Replacement order gets delivered... missing egg rolls and rice. So we're just expected to eat saucy chicken... Asked for my missing items was told I can only get a credit.. said if I can't have them I want a refund. I won't be ordering again so credit is no use. They said the manager might be able to refund it tomorrow. Uhhh ok... Also as for the food I trashed... they asked for it back upon delivery of the "incorrect" replacement order. Love China Lake! This place is as close to Northeast Chinese food as I've found! Their Egg Foo Yong tastes amazing, I hadn't had any since I left New England!!! New England Egg Foo Yong's gravy is thick and dark, like a gravy for a pot roast. This is a lighter, greasier gravy. We've eaten inside and gotten take out. The food arrived quickly and the waitress was very nice, even though she was busy and looked like she was running the front by herself. There are only a few tables inside, so if you decide to eat inside, make sure they're not busy. The portions are HUGE! I was given 3 large Egg Foo Yong's with large pieces of pork on the top. I had also ordered a side of fried rice but was given a while container of rice. The prices are great! Going back for takeout tonight!! read more

We've driven by this place for years and decided to try it out. We figured since it's been around for so long, it must be good. We actually ate at the restaurant. it is a definite hole in the wall. I'd rather order take out or delivery, BUT the food was great! We are picky with our Chinese food and I have to say, this is one of the best in Rowlett. The portions were huge. I had the curry chicken and my husband had the orange chicken and both were delicious! Our meal also came with a beef egg roll and your choice of sweet and sour chicken, pork and I think beef. We were not a fan of the egg roll, possibly a spice that they used, but that's ok, it came with the meal, so it doesn't count against the 5 stars I gave. If we had ordered it separately, then I would probably take off a star...but again, it's our personal taste preference and not the quality of the restaurant. My husband ordered the sweet and sour chicken with his meal and that was good, but we both agree that the sweet and sour pork was the best! The meat had more flavor to it. Yum! Oh! and I forgot our meal came with soup, so we ordered the hot and sour soup and I have to say it's one of the best in the area. There are two Chinese places within spitting distance of each other in our neighborhood. Both deliver, which is important since I am disabled and unable to get out to visit a place in person. Both restaurants are equal in quality of product and service, which is to say that they both have delicious food at reasonable prices. What one excels at, the other doesn't, and vice versa. For that reason, I choose to order from the one that has superior items that I'm in the mood for. China Lake has a wonderful list of appetizers. Their PuPu Tray is fantastic, with enough variety for me to make an entire meal from. The entrees here are wide and varied. A particular favorite is the Sweet and Sour Pork and Pork Egg Foo Young. They have a much moister Fried Rice than the other place, and I love ordering it with all 5 meats. They have never skimped on the meat with my order. The only thing that truly disappointed me was their BBQ ribs. The meat was very leathery, which killed any flavor I could have gotten from it. I only ordered it once so it could have been a fluke, but there are so many other great choices that I don't miss it. If you love scallops, this is the place to go. The fried scallops are delicious... meaty and with a light coating so you don't miss the flavor of the meat. The other place doesn't even offer that item. All in all, if you are in the mood for Chinese and you want friendly and fast delivery, along with great variety and reasonable prices, this is a good choice. It had that 1980's feel and every seat was covered (weird) When I walked in I felt the vibe of getting an average to bad meal but this was not the case. We were in for a very nice surprise. The service. 5/5 Very attentive servers / owners. They smiled and took our order correctly and asked us if everything was to our liking when the food was brought out. The food...4/5 Egg Drop Soup 3 1/2 out of 5. It was better than average and I was glad it did not have any corn or peas (Thank you!) It was lacking a little seasoning so I just added some pepper to make it 4/5. Mongolian Beef 4 1/2 out of 5. The dish was delicious! The meat was better than average and I can only think of a few places in 40 years where I had better. The white rice 5/5!! I couldn't believe they could cook white rice with such an awesome texture. It was almost the texture of a Japanese sushi grade rice. It added a nice texture and flavor to my Mongolian beef and it was the reason I gave the dish a 4 1/2 instead of just a 4. All in all I think this place is VERY underrated. I have not been to the Chinese place across the street yet. I will give the other place a try shortly but I would not hesitate to drive 35 minutes from Plano to eat at this place again! This place is a great little mom and pop place the food is great the price is even better when ever we cant decided what we want for dinner it means its time for a trip to china lake, we eat here a few times a month and have never had a bad meal. its not a high end fancy looking place its just a down home place you feel like your eating in your Asian moms home lol the portions are large and the lunch specials are more then enough to make you sleepy for an afternoon nap at the desk. Been going here for 15+ years and seen much better days. It was starting to go down hill pre-COVID (Was Overall 4 dropping to Overall 3) but I think COVID was the final nail...tap, tap, tap. Ordered on the phone last time (Nov '20) and they had not even started our order upon our arrival in the drive-through (20+ mins later) and then they messed-up that order with missing entrée and missing appetizer (Overall 2)...tap, tap, tap. Putting all that aside...months later we decide to dine-out. I check their website and it mentions nothing about carryout or delivery only...all restaurants are fully open here for many many many months. We arrive after the 20 minute drive to see the dinning still shutdown (Overall 1). Not a happy moment...tap, tap, tap. We have tried China Lake multiple times. They're always very polite and usually easy to understand on the phone. The problem is the fact that even when the order is repeated back something comes wrong every time! That's not an exaggeration. We have eaten there at least once a month for the last 3 or 4 months after taking a break of almost a year. Specifically I asked 4 garlic shrimp with no bamboo shoots. My husband and I were on a way to a Halloween party in Rowlett yesterday. We were looking for a place to eat real quick. We saw China Lake and decided to go there. Boy, were we pleasantly surprised!! The food was extremely good. I had a shrimp fried rice(spicy) and my husband had Egg drop soup and Mongolian beef. My shrimp fried rice was simple and spicy. My husband said that he liked the rice and it was very fluffy and good. The waitresses(I'm assuming they're the owners of the restaurant)were very friendly, they brought the food very quickly and very attentive. We would definitely go back there for sure. I have to say that after eating the meal, I wasn't thirsty(from the amount of sodium some restaurants put in their food)or didn't have a headache(sometimes from MSG). It's a little hole in a wall place that I recommend everyone to go and try. read more

The food here is exactly what I expect Chinese food to taste like. It is excellent. The problem is I picked up my food and ate the egg roll right away. I later found a hair in my entree. When I took the food back...only one bite eaten, she said she'd only give me $5 back. Really? I had to pay $1.50 for an egg roll. The only complaint I have is that when I call ahead, and tell them I will pick it up in fifteen or twenty minutes, it's never ready, and in fact I think they wait until I show up to even start. China Lake was open LATE which was GREAT! (haha, I'm a poet!!) Seriously, this place was good food. They cooked it hot and fresh, and they were very friendly. The dinner portions are HUGE, so consider sharing b/c they won't let you order small portions, only during lunch. Dinner does not come with an egg roll, so we added those. YUM YUM, very good egg roll. We spent way too much money ($22) for two dinners and two egg rolls, but it was a TON of food. Next time we know to go during lunch or split a dinner. First off I have to say I was not a fan until recently....I'm not sure if they were taken over by new management or what....but a friend of mine wanted to try it out back in September even after I told her I didn't go there any more, and hadn't in at least 2 years. I couldn't remember exactly why..so she said...she said oh well I'll try it....And I am so GLAD she did. The food was great! And I've gone 3 times since then, totally love the staff and food here!!! I love Asian food, its my fav food! Chinese right after Sushi so, needless to say I m very picky when it comes to my Chinese food and this place passed the test...The best Chinese in Rowlett!!! My husband and I can share the small portion entrees with an order of fried rice so their portions are very good as well.
