We ordered house special fried rice, house special lomein, salt n pepper squid, general tsos chicken, sweet n sour chicken, and eggrolls. First, they dont have menu anywhere online. Saw the pictures of menu on yelp and turned out the prices were about $2-$4 more for each dishes. If I knew that, I wouldn't order this much...I understand there is inflation but it is deceiving when you don't have updated menu anywhere online and the ones that were uploaded as pics are $2-$4 less than the actual price. When I picked up my food, the restaurant was in complete chaos. Dirty and disorganized. Tables full of dirty dishes and old food were everywhere. Their register counter had long printed receipts from the register that was just hanging there...it was cluttered and dirty. Now let's talk about the actual food. Fried rice was BLAND. Salt and pepper squid? the squid wasnt prepper correctly. They eye/teeth on the squid was still attached on it - it wasnt even a full squid with the head. And some of the squid were soggy and suspiciously undercooked maybe? The texture was off and I kind of didnt want to eat it anymore. The general tsos chicken was tough and dry. Couldn't even eat it at all. The sweet and sour chicken was alright...nothing too amazing about it. The lomein and the eggroll was actually the best tasting out of everything and for that they got 3/10 for me. I spent about $86 ish for all of this. Was it worth it? nope. Since the new owners took over the meals have been destroyed. Old owners were not perfect with their service. But their food was spot on. Just to test the change I ordered the Chinese chicken noodle soup. It was no where close to the previous owners quality. Wife ordered the chicken with ginger sauce. Again, it was not even close to the authentic recipes. I have worked with many Chinese and Taiwanese folks. I used to bring them there and they loved it. I would never bring them there now. New owners need to consult with prior owners to get their recipes put back into place. read more

Look, it's nothing fancy! Was looking for a quick lunch. My son's eggplant dish was excellent. House fried rice was good, not the best I've had, but no complaints. This place is seriously so delicious I crave it all the time! My favorite dish is their crispy chicken with garlic and sesame oil. Perfectly crispy with loads of flavors of garlic, ginger and peppers. You can't go wrong with their beef scallion pancake and their shrimp with black bean sauce either. Also, they set out a dangerous bowl of crispy wonton crackers before the food comes out with a sweet and sour sauce. Interesting "experience". Most of the tables were dirty when we arrived. The woman had to clean one off for us. Then she gave us silverware fried noodles off another table. Noodles were a little stale. There was only one other table occupied, but we waited 10 minutes to receive menus. The server up-sold me on a dish I wasn't considering ordering "black bean curd". Ultimately I think I would have been happier with something else. My dining companion was very happy with her chicken dish. You can tell that the quality of food is very good. They just don't seem too concerned with moving quickly or keeping things tidy. I would eat here again and try some different things. read more

The more people you come with, the better, because you can order family-style and share everything (some tables even have lazy Susans). I live in Chicago. Used to live in NYC. I've spent a fair amount of time in San Francisco and LA. The point is I've had a fair amount of Chinese food -- good, bad and ugly. I grew up near Binghamton, and my parents still live nearby. The quality of the Chinese food in the area has always been suspect. Let's be blunt: this is a takeout/delivery place in a down at the heels strip mall. To say that it has decor would be a joke. It has 3-4 tables in a fluorescent lit room. The best you can say is that it is clean. Why would you eat here? It has some of the best Chinese food I've eaten anywhere. Anywhere. The chef is a master. If he ever leaves or sells the place, the story may change. But right now, it's almost worth a trip to upstate New York for the food. read more

This place has really good chinese food. It has a "chinese" menu and an "american" one. I've tried almost everything on the chinese menu and it's all great! Their peking duck is probably one of the more authentic tasting ones in the area (it's also super cheap - like 20$ for a whole duck). You need to order one day in advance, however. It's a little greasy too so if you don't mind that then you will love it! I recommend buying a cucumber or two and cutting it up thinly to eat with the peking duck (along with the pancakes/scallions/sauce that come with the duck) The setting is not so nice, and the service can be slow. I recommend getting takeout over sitting down. If you sit down try to go on a weekday or during the day on a weekend (as long as there are less than 2 tables already sitting down you should be fine!) read more

I just got to eat here on a visit. It is certainly modestly decorated, but the emphasis is on the food. It was busy, and the owner was hustling to keep up. The shrimp with black bean sauce was tasty. Peking duck (which has be ordered in some days in advance) was really good, as was a spicy pot of clams in black bean sauce. I understand that crispy squid is good, as well. I decided to try China Lake based on the positive reviews here and I must say that I was not disappointed! How refreshingly to get Chinese food that tastes FRESH and not highly processed. The highlight of my order had to be the Crispy Shrimp in a Black Bean sauce. My wife and I couldn't get enough of this dish! We also had the General Tso's Chicken, vegetable fried rice and shrimp egg rolls. Everything was delicious! I plan on trying the Peking Duck eventually so I'll try to make an update after I've had it. I can't say that I'll ever dine inside China Lake as the atmosphere definitely leaves something to be desired. That being said, this will be our go-to destination for take-out from now on. read more

Every experience here just continues to impress. The service is super friendly. If you're unsure of what to order, smile and ask for a recommendation. The lady with the ponytail will make some suggestions that will be sure to satisfy. Listen to her! The soups are generous and very tasty. The only meal I've had that I haven't really enjoyed yet is the Pad Thai -skip it. Everything else has been great! She really wants you to be satisfied. I've been to CL at least 100 X since I was told about it in 09. The food is different than most Chinese restos and many dishes are excellent. The braised beef wrapped in scallion pancakes is brilliant; we order it every time. Also obligatory is their version of shrimp w/ black bean sauce, which is superior to the many others I've had. We also like steamed whole fish; beef stew; chicken w/ black pepper. On a few occasions we've pre-ordered (at least 2 days in advance) Peking duck which is good altho I've had better, and steamed duck which is unlike anything I've had in a Chinese resto, great flavor but mushy. BYO, a big +. On the - side, altho it's been better of late, it can take too long for the front end meal functions: tea, order taken, wine glasses, etc. Also, later arriving guests get a view of unbussed tables and there's no weather entrance in this all too often frosty part of the world.
