Tried this place for the vegan options, but the food was so bad, we threw it all out after a few bites. The mock sesame chicken was so hard, it was as if it had been fried, refrigerated, and microwaved multiple times. The mock meat in the rice and noodle dishes were just sponges full of coconut oil and salt. The mock pineapple chicken dish was swimming in an artificial yellow goo. Inedible. I really like Yelp, and I use it a lot but sometimes I find myself so angry at it because it leads me so far off course. This place is NOT AN ACCEPTABLE option for cheap Chinese food. It's probably the worst carry-out I've ever tried. Most of it ended up in the trash. First of all, the woman on the phone was pretty rude. She told me they don't deliver out my way so I agreed to come pick it up. When she said it'd be ready in 10 minutes, that should've been a major red flag. We got there and they charged us an $8 'carryout fee' which makes zero sense. Crab rangoon - pretty hard to screw up but they managed to. It's a BIG DRY wonton with a small smearing of dried out crab filling. Plus side- there's a lot included, probably like 10 or 11 rangoons. Egg roll - disgusting, dry, yuck. Egg drop soup- yellow mucus Hot and sour soup- actually probably the best thing in our whole order. Lots of mushrooms, which I love, and good strong flavor. Orange Chicken/Lo Mein combo- Slimy mess. My boyfriend ordered this but didn't want to take the leftovers with him because he didn't want to stink up the car. The crispy beef was the worst thing and made me actually angry. Like the lady should have just warned me not to get it, it shouldn't even be on their menu. It was inedible. I'm sorry to be a hater but come on, we live in Richmond. I've got to give a shout-out to our "old standby" for a quick, cheap lunch at work. We order from them 2-3 times per month and can count on them delivering within 30 minutes or so. There are usually multiple people ordering together and China Panda gets everything right 9 times out of 10 (unlike some other places we order from). They have great lunch specials- for $5 you get the meal and an egg roll or soda. I am a meat eater but also like tofu (and prefer it from Chinese places) so I almost always get the Homestyle Bean Curd special. It can be greasy but flavorful with plenty of veggies. My husband is a fan of the General Tso's chicken and I also like the Sweet and Sour Chicken. Bottom line: Don't expect fine dining but it's fast, filling and tasty read more

First -- a disclaimer: My 5-star rating is not intended to say that this is one of the best restaurants in the city. Rather, I think you need to judge them in their context -- Chinese take-out. Fantastic for takeout Basically, this place is fast, the food is good and its cheap. I come here every time I do laundry over at Sylvia's suds and stitches out of convenience. It seems like most people get takeout, but they do have a couple tables to eat in at and the staff are pretty cool people to to talk to. The service is really fast if you just walk in to order. Located in the museum district at the corner of Sheppard and Park, China Panda seems very unassuming compared to the swankier sit-down restaurants at the same intersection. Though it looks like a dive, China Panda's fares are quite tasty and incredibly veggie-friendly! Catering primarily to take-out and delivery customers, China Panda serves up a large menu of over 90 meat-based dishes, almost 90 veggie-friendly dishes, and about 30 combo dinners. The huge vegetarian menu and the variety of tasty mock meats keep me coming back! Their hot and sour soup is vegetarian, a bit spicy, greasy, and delicious. I have a weakness for the Mock Hunan Beef. In my opinion, the mock beef dishes are superior to the mock chicken ones. I have yet to try the mock seafood dishes. Portions are sizeable and fairly cheap by Richmond standards. Though there are a couple of tables, the staff generally seem a little confused when you choose to eat-in, and the ambiance leaves something to be desired. Delivery is free (over $9), so it's not such a bad idea to seek out that option. Take-out is also timely whether you order ahead or not. China Panda never fails...they always provide good Chinese food. I haven't tried too many dishes as I am always a General Tso's chicken gal. All orders have been fresh taking and yummy. Someone recommend the mock dishes and I have to say they aren't that great, BUT I am cool with meat, so I would rather have the chicken. China Panda is consistently good eats. I only live a block away but I do sometimes get totally lazy and actually get delivery, (I know it's one block but hey it's free). I don't really stick to one thing on the menu, but everything I get is good and they have no problem with substitutions. Their Chinese donut holes (not sure if that's the name of them) are srumdillyupscous, (made up word), I do regret eating them after I finish because I eat the entire bag and I know they have to be full of calories. As for myself, I order strictly from the vegetarian/veg menu. And oh, what a glorious menu it is! Lots to choose from. I'm a huge fan of hot and sour soup, and rarely does one match up with my favorite from Yuan Fu up in Rockville, MD. This, however, is appropriately spicy and thick. Much love. Otherwise, the rest of the menu is good. The only qualm I have is with the lack of vegetables in some of their mock-meat dishes. Broccoli with General Tso's is almost mandatory, right? Their beef is better quality than their chicken; I'm sure they'd be more than able to switch out one for the other in any dish. Lastly, 15 minutes here actually does mean 15 minutes. Usually less. Back in June 2011, this particular China Panda sent notices around saying they would be closed for the next two months due to renovations. I patiently waited for two months to pass until they opened back up. That time came and passed and there was no notification of an extended renovation of the restaurant. I had no clue this restaurant was back in business until yesterday. I was overjoyed to know that my favorite Chinese place was back, so I wanted to order today. My most recent experience with this restaurant can only be described in two words: Booty Juice. The experiene was 100% freshly squeezed booty juice. It was made to go down the crapper. As I initially called in the order, the person taking my order wasnt the sharpest tool in the shed. Her elevator didnt exactly go all the way to the top. She knew next to nothing about the menu and prices on it. It took 8 minutes for me to convey to her what food I wanted to order while helping her out with where the items were located on the menu. She tells me that the wait will be 30-45 minutes maximum. 30-45 minutes passed and no sign of the food, so I did not break a sweat. An hour passes and I become a tad bit antsy. An hour and a half passes and I'm ready to call back to the restaurant but there was only one problem: Whoever was answering calls did not want to pick the phone up. I spent the next 5 minutes calling the restaurant, trying to get someone to pick up and they finally do. She informs me that the delivery driver will be there in a few minutes. A few minutes passed and he arrived with the food... an hour and forty five minutes later. The food was anything but hot or warm. The delivery guy did not seem to care that he was late or offer any kind of special to make up for the late delivery. What was once my favorite Chinese restaurant in Richmond turned into my least favorite. read more

It's not awful, but it's not amazing. I ordered the pineapple mock chicken, vegetable wonton soup and the veggie rolls. The rolls were probably the best item, which isn't saying much since they basically tasted like Costco appetizers. The soup was ok but really salty. The main dish was odd: the chicken (mock) tasted pretty good, but the sauce had a weird, almost dish watery flavor. If it gives you any idea, I didn't eat the leftovers. If the customer service was a little friendlier they'd get a third star. But curtness+mediocre food=2 stars. If it came down to choosing the best orange chicken, I'd not hesitate to say China Panda makes the best. However, I can't buy from here anymore. For someone who owns a small business in the same area (literally the same street) she kept asking/telling "why do you shop here?" "I don't like your store" "Your parents bad store." So I am a pretty picky person. I don't really enjoy ordering new things, I don't like other people cooking me food, I don't like trying new places. My "go to" chinese places are Yu's China Bistro, Yen Ching, or PF Changs. Unfortunately, none of those delivery to my house in the fan. SOOO...we ordered China Panda because they renovated and it looks clean and pretty. The food wasn't THAT bad I would've just preferred better. Wanton soup was delicious and I would've ordered a thousand more. The Hunan Chicken was OVERLOADED with oil/sauce. Spicy but not really any flavor. I ate a bit of it and set it aside. Steamed dumplings...typical...nothing too fancy...meh. The bf ordered the crab wontons because he has an obsession with those crazy little things. Maybe, I repeat MAYBE...there was a teaspoon of this "crab" filler and then a huge fried wonton. It was disgusting to say the least. Seriously...what a waste of my time and money. I could've been eating more wonton soup. I was so underwhelmed, I forgot to eat my fortune cookie. Isn't that like bad luck? Simply put, I NEVER order Chinese food anywhere else. For 5 years now, I've been a loyal China Panda customer and they never disappoint! Their food is always fresh, never greasy or oily, always delicious!! One night I was craving Chinese food and they were closed. I ordered take out from them last night and it was awesome. I had a craving for salty, saucy Chinese food and that's exactly want I was given. I had it delivered and they showed up at my apartment a lot faster than I expected. The portions were pretty large and the prices were spot on. I will definitely order from them again. I am giving this place one star because the food is great and quick. However the lady that works there is a crazy bitch. She black listed my girlfriend and I for complaining about how we received beef instead of the vegan dish we originally ordered. Her mistake not ours. We returned the food and she denied to make us the dish we ordered. She even raised her voice threw up her hands and shouted do not come back you are not welcome. It was like pulling teeth at that point to even get a refund for that single dish. We have been eating at China panda for years and spend a lot of money there. It's not really a place to dine in. There are two tables, and I saw the owners on their phones waiting for orders. The food came out really quick, I live approximately 10 minutes away and by the time I got there, the food was already out. When I brought it home everything was still hot, so you know my order wasn't sitting around too long. The portions aren't as big as some places, and the food is average. I would say if you are looking for a place that is quick and the food is 'Ok' then this is a good place. My wife ordered tale out a few weeks ago and was given nothing but a hard time by the person taking the order. My wife, vegetarian, asked if there was chicken broth in the egg drop soup. The woman replied "you don't eat chicken but you eat egg? That's wierd. Chickens come from eggs." My wife reiterated she was only concerned about chicken broth and meat products. The woman then continued with "it has water, salt and egg. You eat water right?" Full blown horrible attitude. I never would enter this place before they did the renovation. It was really scary! But when they gutted it and re-did everything, I had to check it out as I have been looking for a neighborhood Chinese take out. So now I have been 5-10 times. It is quite good. They have brown rice available (most of the time) and one of my fave appetizers, Shrimp Toast. The dumpling dough is a little different than most I have had, instead of the thin, dense dough, they use a more bready, thick and soft dough. It's not bad, just not what I was expecting and I sure ate them all. The entrees are all cooked well and flavored appropriately. I have had a couple of shrimp dishes as well and I am always sure to notice if the shrimp are overcooked, they do a perfect job, every time. The folks working the phones and the desk to ring you up are all friendly. The only problem I have ever had is the Chinese Lady, one time took my phone order and wanted to charge me an extra $2 for brown rice. Every other time I have gotten that, it has only been $1, Also, if you order a pint, this is only 25 cents more or 50 cents for a qt.... Well, when I politely brought this discrepancy to her attention, she said, "Do want it or not." I made a few more comments, trying to reason with her, but she was just in a mood. As I walked over there to get my food, I felt as if she had been very rude to me. When I got there, I tried find out what her problem was and again, she rudely said , "do you want it or not?" and basically took the bag back. I was hungry so I got the food, it was good as usual. I didn't go back for over 2 months, this lady needs to be taught some very basic customer service skills. It's best to call ahead so you can avoid waiting. The food was reasonably priced. Parking can be a hassle since the restaurant is located in the busy section of the fan.
