Terrible. House Chow Mein arrived tepid at best. I was bracing for having to blow to cool the first bite but there was no steam when raising the chopsticks. The server (owner?) didn't stop by for the obligatory check-in. I didn't get up from the table to initiate. I did have to leave the table to retrieve a to-go container and seeing this, the server (owner?) began laughing, but didn't get up from her seat. There were two other tables in the restaurant. I slid my credit card to the table's edge and waited an agonizing minute before holding the card up and telling her I was ready. Again, she laughed. She brought me only the merchant copy of the receipt which I signed and indicated zero gratuity. I wrote a note: "Meal arrived cold. Three small shrimp in the dish. Server did not ask if everything was okay." AS I WAS RISING FROM THE TABLE, she came over, grabbed the receipt and began reading it, laughing very loudly as I bolted for the door. On my way out, a group of four adults and three children from Florida were about to come in and I told them to be sure their food arrives hot, because mine sure didn't, and they said they were not going to take the chance and would try someplace else. I haven't left a review in years. But people should be careful about choosing to eat here. read more

So GROSS and SO OVERPRICED. We should've known upon walking into an empty restaurant at dinner time that the locals know better than to come here but we found parking near here after getting off the ferry so we settled. Oh boy, did we settle. Neither of us took more than a few bites of the greasy, nasty monstrosity we were served. The eggrolls--frozen crap you get in the freezer section at a grocery store. The shrimp--hope you like eating their digestive systems because they don't bother to devein them. The only thing edible was the white rice. Not a great experience and definitely soured our opinion of Friday Harbor. read more

Food was serviceable from what I hear. The empty place setting you see in the picture is mine because I couldn't order sweet and sour chicken with vegetable chow mein. It wasn't offered and I don't eat rice and they don't allow substitution. I would have had to order two full meal plates to get what I wanted. Ridiculous and far too rigid. Server wasn't helpful. Couldn't explain why they couldn't do a simple substitute that I would have happily paid for. One of my party ordered the teriyaki chicken, but didn't like it and didn't eat it. Server offered to pack it up, but didn't bother to ask if something was wrong with it or something else could be made. Still on the final bill. Greasy spoon with classic Americanized Chinese, Japanese and Korean. The Bento box was OK. Friendly service with a sense of humor. Really old decor and furnishings but it fits with everything else. If I ever go back, I'd try a Korean dish since I understand the owner/operators are Korean. read more

After confirming that China Pearl's 'fake crab' was not gluten free, and learning that 'crab' on their menu was actually crab blended with fake crab, we ordered accordingly to avoid gluten, which makes me very ill. The waiter understood this and pointed out other menu items to avoid. Our spicy tuna roll, advertised as, "Tuna, Cucumber, Fish Egg, arrived with a red sauce on it. I had a piece just as my husband discovered it was full of fake crab. The restaurant's reaction to our dismay was, at best, underwhelming. The tea was tepid and the miso barely warm. And the kitchen was slow. Perhaps all of that should have been enough foreboding to make us leave before I ate something that made me ill. I'm a local and should have known better. Perhaps the worst meal I've ever had. Plates had built up grease on the plates - ran my fingernail across the plate and nothing but dirty grease under my nail. Partner's utensils were dirty as well. Tasted just briefly and that was a big no - left the plate with most of the food untouched. Staff was non-apologetic. Paid the bill and left. On a recent day trip to Friday Harbor I did my usual search for happy hours and Yelp brought me to the China Pearl. This is a decent spot serving not only Chinese food but pizza as well. We opted for a couple of happy hour pints (they had some good local-ish brews on tap) and split a small Greek pizza (happy hour special: $7.95). The beer was cold and fresh, but the pizza was about the size of a 45-rpm record. (For those of you young 'uns out there, that's small!) It was mostly crust, but the toppings were tasty (if not plentiful). The service was super friendly, and fast. They also have TV's so you don't miss the game. All in all this was a solid happy hour choice in a town with not a lot of HH options. read more

I've been here twice, and both times, the food was really good. It's Americanized Chinese with a few other Asian dishes added in like Vietnamese. They are quick to deliver your order and the price is good. The service has also been all right - not awful, not excellent. Can't speak as to the China Pearl or it's bar as we did neither. The 5 stars are for the Kung Fu Pizza only. Came here for pizza on the recommendation of the folks at Discovery Inn. We ordered the Kung Fu (all meat and not greasy) and it was one of the best we've had in the state of WA. The place was clean and the service was very friendly. To wrap things up we received Fortune Cookies. Nice touch! I wonder if they'd deliver to Sammamish. :) read more

If I could give this place zero stars I would. The worst food I've ever eaten. We ordered chow mein and the noodles were hard and crunchy. We understand they are pan fried noodles but these were uncooked and then covered in sad sauce with sad vegetables. When we asked the waitress if we could order something else or re-cook the dish she snapped at us that the noodles were supposed to be crunchy and then walked off. Even if you're craving mediocre Chinese food, this place will disappoint. Nothing was fresh and I wouldn't be surprised if they microwaved everything. I called ahead of time to order Chinese take-out. They said it would be ready in 15 minutes. I arrived 15 minutes later and the food was not ready. I ended up waiting another 20 minutes before the food was boxed up and ready to go. So that was not good.. The food itself was just average Chinese food. Not bad, but not amazing. This review is for Kung Fu Pizza, the other half of China Pearl. Don't waste your time, money or taste buds here. We had just dealt with an awful experience at Cask and Schooner across the street and this was one of the only places left open. They were closing in 10 mins so we barely got there in time to get some pizza to go. The staff barely even let us order but were "gracious" enough to let us order to go. We both wanted something different on our pizza so we decided to get two small pizza's for $8.95 each and I only wish they would have explained just how "small" these pizza's really were. I figured for almost $10 the pizza would be a decent size but I was very disappointed when we finally arrived back at our hotel and saw our pizza's. When they say small, they mean it and that wasn't even the worst part. When I opened my pizza box the pizza inside looked like something you would pay $2.50 for at a convenience store or gas station and tasted like it too. This had to be one of the cheapest tasting pizza's I had ever tasted. I was starving so I manged to eat most of it but my gf couldn't even eat half of hers before she tossed it out. The only reason I give them more than one star is that they let us order when it was almost closing time. But I wouldn't recommend this pizza to anyone. It is all ridiculously overpriced. The food is downright disgusting. The hot and sour soup tasted like spicy dishwater - not exaggerating. It even had bubbles. The Kung Pao Chicken was bland, full of day old vegetables, very little chicken and the portion was tiny especially for the price. Even the peanuts tasted as if they had been reused. The egg rolls were soggy, greasy and chewy. The killer was that for an appetizer, soup and small entree it cost over $30.00. The upstairs bar looked like a bomb had gone off in it and the bartender was either a suicidal emo or just ridiculously rude. Come on!!! Let me preface this by saying that this is a review of the upstairs bar only - we didn't eat any food here. My boyfriend and I were looking for a place to play some darts, but it appeared that the only place in town that had them was instead using the space that night for live music. So we popped into China Pearl to grab a drink instead. The bartender was super friendly, the drinks were good, and there were several activities we could have done had they not been already in use (pool tables, foosball, etc). We had a fine time here. Honestly, I almost gave this place one star but the appetizers and soup were very good which just set us up for massive disappointment. A friend had pizza and liked it (the reason we came here since they had Chinese food and pizza.....what could possibly go wrong? ) our meals were awful. Wow, one star. Tough crowd. Ping pong, pool, booze, and music. This place is pretty cool after 6pm. It gets quite crowded around 9 or 10 on the weekends. I have only had one meal here and it was nothing special. I remember it as being similar to something I would scoop onto my plate at a Chinese food buffet. Whatever, the atmosphere was quite entertaining. There are a ton of places to eat dinner or lunch in Friday Harbor. I would definitely have a good meal somewhere else, then finish the night here with a game of pool or ping pong. Quite entertaining! read more
