We sat at the sushi bar, which I highly recommend, and from the moment we sat down it was clear we were in good hands. We were surprised right away with a complimentary amuse‑bouche--crab stick rolled with salmon--which was a thoughtful and delicious touch. To start, I ordered the seaweed salad while Justin went with the ginger salad; both were fresh, balanced, and a perfect lead‑in to the sushi. For the main event, I ordered a spicy tuna roll and eel nigiri, and this is where Zen really shined. The spicy tuna roll was exactly what sushi lovers hope for--very light on rice and heavy on fish, something that's surprisingly hard to find around Charleston. The eel nigiri was rich, perfectly cooked, and full of flavor. Justin ordered several pieces of sashimi and was equally impressed. We asked about albacore tuna (unfortunately unavailable), but were told the salmon was excellent--and moments later, we were unexpectedly served two additional pieces of sushi each. Completely unexpected and incredibly appreciated, especially for a birthday celebration. I tried Zen and was pretty impressed at the quality of the sushi and the kitchen items. The calamari was good. I love big pieces of squid. Squid is actually my favorite nigiri. You definitely might need to cut it down or maybe half it for a bite but I still loved it. They brought it with a fork and knife, so it's kind of expected. I also ordered the Sambal or yellow curry with chicken. It was pretty good too. It came with a house salad. The dressing on the salad was delicious. The samba curry was really good too. I liked that everything came out hot. I also ordered the SC rainbow. It was good too. I pretty much liked everything I ordered. Id probably order all of those again. Service and ambiance was good. Here late on Tuesday night and steady flow of Patrons at Zen! Always a Great Atmosphere here very cool and laid back. Walked in Greeted by the Manager and she promptly ask where I would like to sit and I chose the Sushi Bar, the Staff here are well trained and very knowledgeable because of her!! I'm sitting at Sushi Bar Solo and always amazed how great these Sushi Bar Chefs are on top of their game!! The Sushi here is fantastic my favorite in the Charleston area! This was a pleasant surprise find here in Charleston. We sat at the bar for a late lunch and our server was wonderful, patient, and gave great suggestions for the menu. The restaurant has dim lighting and reminds me of sushi restaurants in the movies. Everything we had was delicious! The nigiri was wonderful and the tuna was delicious. Zen has been our go-to spot for sake and sushi for years! They have a great selection of specialty rolls. My favorite part is that they use rice paper instead of seaweed on most of their specialty rolls. The service is always fantastic. They have a private party room that we use for large groups. The bar area is nice and so is the main restaurant area. My last review for here was written 10 years ago, so you know they been slinging solid food for lots of years. Zen is on of our favorite sushi place located in West Ashley. This family owned restaurant has been our favorite lunch and dinner spot. The ambience of this place is like typical sushi place with dim light and relax atmosphere. The waiters often check on us and make sure our drinks refill and brought the empty plate off our table. We love their kraken rolls, salmon, and spicy girl rolls. Their sashimi always fresh and their asian food is good as well. Their salad and miso soup also our family's favorite. One thing that I love about my friends is the fact they do not question it when I take pictures of their food but I forgot what they ordered. The food was delicious! My friends loved their sushi and my fried rice was on point. The waitress was one of the best I have ever had in my life. She was like a ninja refilling drinks without us noticing and promptly asking if we wanted refills on alcohol. They have a private room, which I did not know until I used the restroom. I want to go back to take advantage of the room sometime. The restroom was clean but they only had soap on one side of the double sinks so I had to reach across my friend to get soap. As a longtime patron of Zen Asian Fusion, but a first time reviewer, I choose to peruse the one star reviews before sharing my opinions. This is based on my half dozen mostly lunch/late afternoon visits during 2025. We have never encountered a meal that might be considered substandard. The food always comes out quick, hot and fresh. The waitstaff, food runners and bussers are competent and friendly. While I normally dine off their regular menu, guests I have entertained have ordered sushi--and have consistently praised the quality and attention to detail. While I am not much of a sushi fan (I'll have an occasional Philadelphia roll), I am impressed with the fanciful, creative presentation of some of the choices. On the other hand, parking can be somewhat of a hassle if it is crowded. Be aware though they usually have some parking spaces available around the rear of the establishment--but you may have to circle the block to access it. And, yeah, the manager appears to be somewhat of a grump, but who and I to judge? And, well, if you have to visit the mens room during your visit, you'll find a clean and fresh environment to take care of your business. I've had to use some pretty nasty ones around here, so I think that is worth mentioning. When I am in West Ashley, Zen Asian Fusion is always on my radar. I'll keep going again and again--or unless I have a run-in with Mr Grumpy McGrumperson. read more

5-17-24 Lunch On my way to Mount Pleasant to go food shopping so stopped here for lunch first. I love sushi and this was on My way and had great Yelp reviews. Once I arrived it has a nice parking lot out front to accommodate all its customers. Note the parking lot was packed. Once inside I was promptly greeted and lead to a booth. The waitress must be used to customers needing a quick lunch so she was there eager to take my order. I asked for the lunch menu as they had given me a couple of them. I had water with lemon as well as the crunchy tuna roll and California roll. Thought that was a good start. The portion size was generous and after eating what I had ordered that was plenty. I prompted got the check and paid. Prices were very good for the quality of the food and excellent service. I have to be honest. The space is nice, the staff is friendly. We were seated quickly and the server was at our table promptly. They had a young man constantly circling to refill water. Our server was very nice. Food was prepared quickly and accurate. My partner ordered sushi, soup, and a drink. Said the roll was good and it was definitely presented well. I ordered the tempura chicken and vegetables - I changed my mind at the last minute and REALLY wish I hadn't. I was not expecting the chicken and the veggies to both be tempura friend - just the veggies. Literally nothing had any flavor whatsoever. The veggies were bland, the chicken was bland, and even the dipping sauce had absolutely no flavor. I was so disappointed in my meal. I wouldn't categorize this as five star but definitely the best takeout Asian food in West Ashley. They have quite a big restaurant inside with a full size bar. I came on a Sunday afternoon and there was no waiting and we were seated and served right away. The server (sorry I didn't get her name) was very friendly and on top of checking on us and keeping the drinks filled. We ordered edamame and sushi appetizers. We sat at the sushi bar and the chefs gave us our sushi that we could see sitting there for 30 minutes.
