This is a hole in the wall Chinese restaurant serving a very interesting niche -- Cantonese food. Like all the other Chinese restaurants in the area, China Tong has all the standard Americanized Chinese dishes that people love to discuss in reviews. However, I tend to avoid such dishes and head straight to the part of the menu I don't understand. So far, I have tried their noodle soups, and I've been satisfied. The broths have a lot of flavor and are stuffed with noodles. Unfortunately, the meat can be quite fatty, and the vegetables are sometimes too scarce. Next time I go back, I'll make sure to ask for extra vegetables. The atmosphere of this place is limited in aesthetic appeal, but it serves its purpose of providing a comfortable place to sit while either eating or waiting for your food. read more

Best noodle soup in Lansing! Please forget the orange chicken kinda things and randomly choose something from either Cantonese rice bowl or noodle soups. BTW, their homemade chili oil smells super good, you should definitely ask for some sample and add to your noodle soup if you like spicy food. read more

As a Chinese American who knows how Cantonese food is supposed to taste, I can safely say that China Tong's food is terrible even by Chinese standards. I would be able to forgive the horrible service if the food was good, bad service is not a big deal in China, but the food was terrible. Case in point, I ordered the mapo tofu, my favorite dish that my father made when I was growing up and a dish that I can make myself. However the hot mess that they put in front of me was much too oily. The meat was also not cooked correctly and was soggy, not dry like it is supposed to be. Also, Americans may find the lack of service quite jarring. You get your own water with paper cups from one of those office water tanks. Silverware was non existent when I went there and we ate using plastic utensils. TL;DR this place is shit even by Chinese standards. I ended up throwing away my beef pho. The noodles and everything looked great except the meet. The beef slices, which are supposed to be thin and cooked by the broth, were thick and dis colored -- they looked like they were liver with the shine on them. It also did not smell right...that was the first thing that threw me off. Then I found these chunks of mystery meat -- I think it may be tongue? WHAT! So gross. Do not eat here. read more

This was the absolute worst Chinese food I have ever eaten, and the worst customer service I have ever experienced. I ordered two dinner entrees, as well as a side of crab cheese. The egg rolls that came with the meal were soggy, the crab rangoons were hard and old, and both entrees tasted stale and disgusting. When we got home, my boyfriend and I were so dissatisfied with the food that we didn't want to eat it. We called china tong and told them the dilemma, and they refused to believe their food was bad. I told them I would drive all the way back there to show them the food and to see if we could get fresh food made or even just a refund so we could go somewhere else for better food. They refused every offer, insisting that they knew our food was good. The woman hung up the phone and didn't take another call from either of our phone numbers. I went in the next day to try to talk to the owner, who also said he would not refund us or make us a new meal, even though we did not eat what they made us the night before. Do not venture out and try this place like we did. It was horrible and I would never recommend it to anyone. Peking or Rice Kitchen are much better places very close by. read more

Chinatong is a good choice for quick lunch. Their noodles soup are really good. My favorite are roast duck noodles, whistle noodles and Jingdu Beef noodles. The rice bowl are also good. Swiss beef, fried chicken leg ,and pork hocks are good choices.And the Sichuan dishes here are very authentic. Awful. I got the sesame chicken dinner. The chicken pieces were some of the fattiest I've seen, super chewy, with no flavor whatsoever. The sauce had no flavor. The rice was okay but it was rice.. They ran out of egg rolls somehow even though it looks like the place is always dead, so they gave me crab ragoons instead which were alright. Having tried both Rice Kitchen, Charlie Kang's, and Peking Express before coming here, I had my doubts. However, it's a lot closer to me than both those restaurants, so I figured I would give it a try. Service was quick for pick-up, the dining area itself is kind of small, but for the most part I'd assume you weren't planning on eating there anyway. I have since gone there pretty much exclusively for Chinese. The egg rolls and crab rangoons are very nice and crunchy, putting them LOADS better than Rice Kitchen and Peking. I usually get the kun po chicken dinner combo, which gets you an order of chicken fried rice as well as the entree. The fried rice is very good, though I've had better. I've since brought my friends to the restaurant, and they both enjoyed the sesame chicken and the pork lo mein. Definitely a great place to eat carry out! read more

My roommates signed for me and send it to me. The food is very bad. The duck looks very dirty and the rice tasted like made 2days ago. I make a phone call to ask return. The people who answer the phone is very rude and refuse to return. So I will not go to that restaurant anymore. I just leave all of them to trash bin. Food was unappetizing, service was absolutely terrible. My friend orders the General Tso's, received a different dish with was delicious. After two bites the chef ran out and screamed at him, then took his food and ran back to the kitchen. The inside of this place looks like someone set it up in an hour. Not impressed. I ordered 2 things, the crab rangoon, and a spicy chicken dish with brown rice. It came to $13.00 for the 2 which is pricey compared to other places around the area. Also, pricey for how terrible the decor inside is. Now to the food. The chicken is rubber and hard to eat/chew. Not quality at all. I have been around, so I know they order their chicken by the bag in a slosh mix that they deep fry every time someone orders a chicken dish. Not cool. They need a lot of work. They are kept afloat by all of the international students in the area, however, not even low-standard college students could make an exception to eat this more than once. read more

My husband were excited to try this new restaurant in town because we had seen an article talking about it in Capital Gains. The article mentions that it was unique because it featured authentic Cantonese food. We ordered takeout and unfortunately it was the worst we've ever had. My husband got the sesame chicken and I got Sweet & Sour Chicken. The meat was dry, had no flavor, basically no sauce, and there were no vegetables. It seems they gave extra rice to make up for the lack of vegetables. This is a rare restaurant in Michigan. I'm Chinese, this review is from an Asian palate. If you see a restaurant packed with Asian people, it is your first clue that it's good and it's authentic. Second, if you see Asian soap operas playing on the TVs, yup you guested it, it's frequented by mostly Asians. Third, if you see dishes on the menu that unless you're Asian have never seen before, it's a really good authentic place to eat. This place has all three (3) ingredients. So if you're looking for imitation Chinese food, go to PFChens for lean meats and your sweet and sour chicken. Asians don't eat that stuff. We like the meat with plenty of flavor which comes from fat and sweet and sour chicken is an American invention you can get that at McDonald(s) along with chow mein. New owner can't cook their way out of an oyster pail. I ordered my usual, chicken fried rice, I was sick almost immediately after I ate it, it was pale, had bones and tasted like white people made it. This is a newly open Cantonese restaurant in town. We gave it a try. I ordered the chicken rice box and the chicken tasted very nice and juicy. My friends ordered the roasted duck rice box, the duck was tender and full of flavor, juicy for sure. However, the ingredients they used in the Singapore fried rice noodle were probably not fresh. We tasted bleach-like smell in the chickens and shrimp though the noodles taste fine. I will probably come back for their rice meal options. One star is generous. Really wish I would have read the reviews before trying this place. I only went here because I had already tried Taste of Thai and they are next to one another. Please read the reviews.... I ordered chicken with broccoli - which was literally, chicken with broccoli - no other vegetables at all. I have grown tired of asking these various Asian restaurants what is IN the food. Half do not understand the question, half seem not to care and list 2 of 12 ingredients. So, I got the worst looking chicken I have ever seen in such a dish. It seemed as though an entire chicken was put into a pot, fat, skin and all and then chopped and put in the dish. The broccoli was under cooked and as large as small trees with no knife offered to cut them. I ate as much as I could because the lunch "special" (entree and chicken fried rice) and two spring rolls (which actually were not bad) came to a little over $9. I read, afterwards, about the terrible service - I didn't care so much about that as yeah, if you ask for water, it comes from a water cooler in the dining room in a styrofoam cup! And if all of this wasn't bad enough, you have to ask for a key to use the restroom! I could not have gotten out of there fast enough. What's amazing, apparently this place has been open since 2012. This is the worst place to purchase food from in all of East Lansing, MI. The customer service is even worse and the food is not fresh to order. The price may be low but your thought of the food you consumed will be even lower.
