This used to be my favorite Chinese restaurant in East Lansing, and really, in all of Michigan. The tiny, hole-in-the-wall place run by an old man and his wife - immigrants from eastern China in the 1970s - was a great place to go for any kind of quick Cantonese craving. It reminds me now of some of the little places in Shanghai, owned by similar-minded folks, which for me adds a little bit of authenticity. Or at least down-home Chinese atmosphere. Having tried just about everything from the mongolian beef to the sweet and sour pork and tons of the various daily specials, I can honestly say that in my opinion, nothing was bad there. I'm not huge on water chestnuts so I'd avoid those dishes with 'em, myself, but that's a matter of personal taste and not quality. And the old man and his wife were friendly folks, too. After awhile they knew you by name, what you were up to - as a student they knew what I was studying and would ask how various things were coming along. When things were slow, they'd let me in a little bit on their family, and how their sons were doing and all that, even though I'd never met them and likely never will. They'd become characters in a family drama that I'd gotten to, at least in part, bear witness to. Really, just great people altogether. Sometimes when I get Chinese food elsewhere, I kind of miss them, and wish they were still in the back running the kitchen or something. A couple years ago or so they moved into a new, bigger location, and the old man confessed that they were having trouble making ends meet. The rent was too high, and business was slowing down. I'd moved away by then, and was only in town visiting, so certainly I was no help to them, but I ordered a plate of mongolian beef and the largest coke they had, to try and do my part. I still spent under ten bucks. He brought it to me at my table, now that they had actual tables, his wife in tow with an extra serving of rice, and it was the last time I ever saw either of them. The place has new owners now, and they also serve korean dishes as well. It's still pretty decent food, but it's still primarily Cantonese, so really, you have to go a long way to screw it up. Now if you're dining in, sometimes they'll serve you on those cast-iron sizzle plates, which I still get a kick out of, despite it being wholly unauthentic and inappropriate. Either way, it's not the same without the old man and his wife. I hope they're doing alright, Chinese food in Michigan isn't the same without them. read more

When this place first opened, boy was the food magnificent. I use to only get Chinese food here and it all went downhill... THEN, the business was sold to another owner. The food then got worse and worse. My Shrimp Omelette that I normally get was just not the same. It became too oily and they starting skimping on the shrimp. Had the Mango Pudding there and it was really good. Again, haven't had it once it was under new ownership.. I had heard that this is a great place for Chinese food - mostly from MSU grads. I finally got a chance to check out this place and I was not impressed. Service was very rushed even though there was just a few customers scattered through the dining room. I ordered the BBQ duck on rice for $6.95. The entire dish was lukewarm - tasty enough, but not great. I think this was a great place back in the day and under previous owners as I've figured out from reading the other reviews. Solid lunch destination. This little hole in the wall (or basement if you want to get technical) has decent food. The authentic menu is where it's at, but in the event that you can't see yourself eating the organ meats of animals, perhaps you should stick to the more mainstream dishes. They have a fairly good menu with the standard Americanized dishes (General Tso's, Almond Chicken, etc.), great selection of noodle soups, and non-Americanized dishes. The food does tend to be on the milder side. Not even their hot chili paste is not. Not a bad place to go, but there are definitely better places within driving distance. read more

Peking Express is my go to New York style "Chinese" restaurant in the Lansing Metro. The food is typically priced. They serve the food quickly. But the real win here is in the serving size: an $8 meal gets a you a huge helping of your main dish, rice, crab-rangoon/egg-roll. The dumplings seem to be made in house are vegetarian and are pretty tasty. Can't ask for much more in a "Chinese" take out joint. read more

This place has changed over the past year, because they have a new owner and cook. Before, it was very similar to rice kitchen where you'd probably only get like combo #5, however they now have traditional chinese dishes as well as korean food. The service here is ok, there's this one girl who likes me so she gives me some hookups. You can choose between Korean rice, and chinese rice. If you are Korean, they will most likely serve you side dishes (banchan). I haven't tried all the dishes, but from what I've had it is pretty tasty. You can tell that the ingredients are fairly fresh, and they actually know how to cook it. I recommend the crispy ginger beef, the cantonese pan-fried noodles, and any tofu dish. These are the main dishes I get. It's not overly greasy, and it's quite tasty. My friends and I usually go family style and share the entire feast, and end up spending about 7 to 8 bucks, including tip. read more

First-time here. Very authentic Chinese cuisine, reasonably priced, NO mandatory 18% tipping (which is a very irritating phenomenon in some Asian restaurants near Purdue). The owner (I guess) lady was kind and lovely. I saw some negative reviews regarding the service, but my experience was great. Maybe it's hard to keep up with the service quality when they are really busy... Overall, I would recommend it to those who love authentic Chinese food. read more

I have been going there for years. The rice is not burned and never has been. The prices of the food is great! Service for take out is fast! Unfortunately the other two reviews are inaccurate. Peking Express has been under new ownership for several years. The old man and his wife don't run the place, and it has moved to a new location. The food is hit or miss since the change. I've had certain meals be excellent one day and mediocre a week later. I'd stay away from the traditional "Chinese Take-Out" meals, and try some of their specialties. Prices are competitive and portions are ample. Still better than most of their competition in downtown East Lansing. read more

Horrible experience! I ordered a delivery with the delivery fee already charged. When I got the delivery, I am tipping the delivery guy for 2 dollars just for thanking him. He said'"just two dollars? Short review: I will never order from Peking Express again! Bad food, delivery took 1.5 hours, difficultly communicating via phone. Long review: At 10pm, the delivery time said 1 hour. At 11:05pm I called and they said the delivery man left a half hour ago...BUT the food didn't get to my place until 11:35...AND it was COLD!!! Not only was the food cold, it was not good. They called and told me they were out of Lo Mein, so I asked if I could just cancel it. They said I could not because I ordered from Grubhub and convinced me to order something else. I had no idea what I was ordering because the woman did not speak English very well, so I ended up just saying yes to whatever she was saying. We ordered an orange chicken with crab rangoon. Instead we received a completely wrong dish and their management would not do anything to fix it. We tried explaining that all we wanted was the right food but they did not care and would not help us. It was irritating because they just kept telling us we were wrong when they were at fault. The first time I ordered the veggie delight it was amazing....they are one of the few restaurants that listened when I requested the dish "extra extra extra spicy" However, when I re-ordered the exact same dish less than a week later I got an entirely different dish that was mediocre at best. Worst service ever! The staff are very rude and inattentive. I ordered my food spicy. They never put any spice in it. After I specified my order, they dumped an entire jar of hot red pepper oil in it. A thick layer of spicy oil floating on my food. They were clearing taking revenge on customers. Yeah, I'm pretty much fed up with their service. Twice in a row, I've ordered through Grub Hub and they've messed up the drink order. The first time, I was offered a free 2 liter of drink. They didn't bother to tell me that I had no choice of what drink -- they just blithely brought a 2 liter of regular Mt. Dew. I hate Mt. Dew and am diabetic, so that probably would have killed me. This time, I check the box on the order menu to indicate I wanted Diet Pepsi, and (again with no phone call) they brought me regular Pepsi. When I said I'd ordered Diet, the delivery guy said they don't carry Diet Pepsi. Well, then why on earth is it on the order website???!!! It might sound petty, but their food is no longer good enough to put up with bad service and not the drink I want. Was good before, but now it's terrible. Food is extremely oily, it's like they added half a carton of oil into each dish they cook. When you order for delivery from them, they almost always deliver food that's spilled out, making the entire meal a huge mess before you even start it. This restaurant is horrible. I ordered the Orange Chicken and it gave me food poisoning (and I have never had food poisoning before) that forced me to be out of commission for four days.
