While I had been coming here for years for takeout, whole duck orders, I never truly appreciated the extensive menu and amazing prices that C-Town Cafe offers overall. But now that I work down the street and have been going a bunch for a quick and affordable lunch, I finally have enough info to give a full rating and they exceed all categories this type of restaurant would be in. Quick? We got our order in two minutes. Cheap? I can get what feels like over a pound of food for lunch for less than $7 which is almost non-existent these days in the city. Delicious? Pretty authentic and they don't seem to skimp on ingredients. If you got a pork rice plate, it'll have plenty of pork and choy vegetables along with the mountain of rice. Even the free tea offered for sit-down customers is a nice touch you don't see in all Chinese restaurants anymore. There are plenty of seats but prepared for them to be full at peak times. In nice weather, you could take a 3-minute stroll to any of the nearby parks and enjoy your grub. Service can be a tad suspect but just yell out what you want and you shouldn't have any problems. Since there is no waiter/waitress service, this is the only time you'll be dealing with anyone who works here. I usually deduct at least a half star for not accepting credit cards. Since that is the only issue I could even remotely find, 4.5 stars still rounds up to a full 5. But it's not like you have to carry more than even $10 in your pocket for a extremely filling meal. This time I ordered the general gao chicken with fried rice. The chicken itself was crispy and flavorful. The fried rice was not good because it was mushy and tasteless. To mention, I was charged an additional $3 for substituting the white rice for fried rice. Parking is very difficult as there is no parking lot available -- street parking. read more

This place rocks! Was in Boston recently and got take out from Chinatown Cafe twice because it was so good! The first time we ordered several orders of their roast duck over wonton noodle soup and their tofu "wonton noodle soup". The portion size was so generous. I counted at least 6 large shrimp and pork wontons and 5 or 6 pieces of duck. The noodles and soup were great! The next day we ordered a few more of the same items and decided to try their bbq pork this time. It did not disappoint. For ~$10, it's such a deal for the amount of food you get. Food (1/2): Tried the crispy pork (got the 1 lb.) after this place was recommended by a friend. It was ok but probably attributed to me having this for to-go. The skin wasn't as crispy as I expected but it's definitely very salty (to my liking). You'd have to pair this with normal, unflavored, white-rice or something to help mellow out the saltiness. Service/wait-time/cleanliness (1.5/2): There were language barriers but despite that, I was able to order without issues. Wait-time is relatively quick for to-go (I waited ~5 minutes). Cleanliness is so-so for the typical type. Price (1/1): EDIT: I was recently told by my friend that it's also possible that they didn't measure exactly 1 lbs. and gave me slightly more instead. As such, I revised the pricing and giving them the benefit of the doubt for now and changed price rating from 0 to 1. Old comment below --- This section is my biggest gripe/concern/frustration. Having tasted the crispy pork, I'm sad to say that it's incredibly expensive for what they are. When I asked the price, they said it was $13.50 for 1 lb. of crispy pork (which was relatively reasonable) but then they gave me back ~$2.50 after I gave them my $20.00 bill (cash-only, mind you). I asked what was the extra $4.00 for and they said "tax". If you do the math, I was basically charged a 30% tax for this. For a first-time, this certainly leaves an incredibly poor reception but I personally am "used to it" from the various, similar places that did this. Food is great and excellent portions. People are friendly and hard working. The ambiance is not there, but it is a Chinatown eatery that serves the community well. The lack in ambiance is certainly replaced by really awesome food. My favorite is old school General Gao's chicken on pan fried noodles extra spicy. Best in town. I've been going to Chinatown cafe since I was a child and I'm so happy it's still around. As an adult I must say I enjoy their food a lot more now than I did as a child. They have increased their quality of food. Their portions still remains the same. They aren't stingy like other restaurants. The exterior doesn't attract me, nor does their interior, but it's their quality of food. Right when you walk in you can see the meat option-pig, duck, spare ribs, chicken, you name it. Everyone here is super friendly. Their staff here mainly speaks Chinese, but they do have the cashier and the male answering the phone who knows perfect English. These two are super nice!!! The menu is in Chinese and in English which makes everyone's lives easier as there is a full description. They have seats if you prefer eating there. They also have hot water and tea you can help yourself with if you do decide on eating there. My go to is their wonton noodle soup with spareribs and their general gao chicken. Generally I like eating there since I like my chicken nice and hot when it comes out. Both of these cost no more than $20. Again, their portions are a lot bigger than other places. My boyfriend and I shared both of these plates and we even had some general gao and rice left over. They have gender neutral bathrooms!!! It seems to me that good Hong Kong BBQ still eludes Boston. Within the Boston Chinatown area, there are quite a handful of restaurants that serves HK BBQ including Hong Kong Eatery as well as Quick Pic BBQ. Chinatown Cafe is one of the places that has a better rating when it comes to this type of restaurant. For me, I recently had their roast pork and soy sauce chicken rice plate ($8.85 after tax). The soy sauce chicken is a whole chicken leg made separately from their whole soy sauce chickens. Both items were on the saltier side and lack the sweetness that would make a better bbq item. The chicken more or less only had the soy sauce taste and not much else. The rice was also drizzled in the soy which made the whole dish that much saltier. I do appreciate the Napa cabbage thrown below the meats to help cut some of the salt. The roast pork was made quite well, nice red color, but again, a touch too salty. I really wish that Boston has a better HK bbq option when I am craving for it. read more

Fantastic place for lunch. Their BBQ is very good. Portion is big and the price is cheap and the quality is tremendous. It's a very busy place. Small but clean and they have tables for you to sit down, relax and enjoy your meal. Besides BBQ, they have a variety of other items on the menu for you to choose from. They cook them fresh when you order, not like most restaurants that will heat up your food. It's about 3-4 blocks from Chinatown, but you won't be disappointed. If you don't eat large portion like me, I recommend to buy one and share because it's huge. Make sure you let them know whatever meat you order is over rice as a meal. This used to be a great place for comfort food. One of my favorite was the wonton soup. I was there recently and ordered the wonton soup and roast pork. I don't know what happened in the past few months since my last visit, maybe new owners? The wontons were overcooked to the point the skin was disintegrating, no texture left. Went to order one of mays cake house famous mango mousse cakes and saw this hidden gem across the street. It's a small restaurant that greets you with mouth watering roasted meats hanging behind the glass counters. Cheap eats with huuuge portion sizes. I got the roasted pork and duck rice plate. Best roasted pig I've had!!! We ordered a whole pig several times in the past and they were soooo tasty! The skin stays crispy for days!!! Which is amazing and hard to do! That takes great skills! It's hard for a restaurant to stand out in Chinatown, but this place is amazing! It's pretty much a family tradition for us to come get take out here at least twice a month. We always call in and then pick up the food in like 20 minutes. The dishes here are good! I would recommend the 8 Delight Crispy Noodles, Fish Fillet with Tofu Rice, and Beef Stir Fried Noodles. Their Cha Shu here is very fresh and not full of fat. They also have amazing special dish with cold pig feet prepared Hong Kong style that I'm only been able to get here. Menu is on top of the hanging rack of roasted duck, Boneless Spare and chicken windows. We ordered half a roasted duck and the tomato & beef with brown rice. The wait was not to bad for our food. The roasted duck just glisten of juicy from being roasted for hours. The skin was crispy and the meat was tender. The portion was decent. There was a mixture of meat sizes, so you do not feel ripped off. Some places in Chinatown will just give you a roasted duck with all fat and bones with no type of meat on it. This place doesn't do that to you. The tomato and beef was tasty also. The suace wasn't to heavy and went well with the brown rice. The beef was tender and not to chewy. We planned to come here on Friday night after work. Because this place close fairly early (8:30pm), we came here a bit early, around 7:40pm. We ordered the food from the counter. I got R6, which was the roasted duck and port platter. I wanted see what kind of chef's special soup they had. But it was difficult to communicate in English with the cashier, I couldn't figure out what the special was, ended up ordering hot and sour soup. They had a very generous portion for their food. My friends ordered roasted duck, pork and chicken platter - although the price was only few cents different, the portion was much bigger for that platter so it is a much better deal to order that dish. They close exactly at 8:30pm so don't expect them to wait for you to finish your food. The quality of the food was excellent and the price was very affordable. This is my go to order: Yee Mein Hong shu fish and rice - no tofu extra sauce and extra fish It is so delicious! They are great with portions however i wish they put more sauce in the fish plate, especially since we ask for extra...Everyone is nice and food comes out fast. I come here every weekend. The Chinatown café is located where up on Harrison Street in the Chinese residential area not in the main part of Chinatown. The portions are huge. In addition to all the barbecue they have regular dishes. Are usually stick to the barbecue roast dark roast pork sweet pork ribs soy sauce chicken etc. etc. I find one of the best values would be there triple combination with rice and a little bit of greens for $9.95 the plate is so huge it's enough food for two people in fact my daughter and I usually split it. They offer free tea in Styrofoam cups which is help yourself. The area is cafeteria style seating and for Chinatown is about average on cleanly Ness which in most cases would be not clean but acceptable for Chinatown. Parking is very tough you have to find a meter in less you're a resident which I believe most of the clientele live in the area. At lunchtime there's a long line same at dinner this place does fantastic business the food is very good. read more

One of the classic restaurants thats been in Chinatown for as long as I can remember. Its not a fancy waited restaurant but a place to get comfort food for about $10 or less. Chinatown Cafe does get packed so the best bet is to call and go in to pick up. If you have time and want to eat there, they have a good amount of tables and chairs you can choose from. Food comes in very generous portions for the price you pay. Theres complementary water and tea and a gender neutral bathroom :) The walls are decorated with pictures of Chinatown from many years ago, very historic. Most staff there speaks some to fluent English :) an alternative is just to tell them the number from the menu. read more

Came here to split 3 rice plates with a friend because I know they still do pretty good portions for cheap price. Beef chow foon was pretty hearty and had a ton of noodles. Salt and pepper pork was crispy/hot and a little spicy which was perfect! Patrons come in here to give you business and money but all of you like to say disrespectful things to all customers!!! Complained that my mom is too clean. So I guess all Chinese restaurants likes to be dirty. Very rude Chinese people. Told the current boss to have the table clean but he just stood there and give dirty looks to my mother and I. My mom saw the chefs picking their nose and teeth and hey won't wash their hands. Told the boss and the boss didn't tell his workers not to do so but started trouble that my mom is the trouble maker. This is why a few months back they had to wear mouth masks to serve people. The bulging eyes boss looks like he wants to punch my mom in the face because the lady that chopped BBQ meat wiped the table then the chopping board and my mom thought it was very dirty. The old boss just stand at the cashier line like someone will not pay their bill or the employees will hide some money from the registers.
