I did not know about this place till I saw it and wondered how good their food is. Finally, reminded myself about this place and came today to try their chicken wings, egg drop soup, and sweet n sour pork. Chicken wings were overcooked and the person making them seemed to be busy. Egg drop soup was the best!!! Sweet n sour pork was dissatisfying because it was fried and sweet n sour sauce on the side. I usually do not like it that way with sweet n sour chicken. However, soaking them in the sauce and rice together tasted great!!! Next time , I will try their Mongolian Beef. The food does come out hot n fresh. They seemed really busy today for my time there they did not stop to cook and orders kept coming in. I could not blame them for the overcooked chicken wings. The place is nice and quiet but small. I wish they had a soda machine inside for drinks or least some kind of water as you dine in. They have bottle water and coke for purchase. read more

This takeout spot delivers on speed, but little else. The fried rice tasted flat and premade--no egg, no seasoning, just a few pieces of carrot and onion. The cashier confirmed it was premade. You also cannot sub the white rice for a fried rice with a protein -- the premade fried rice is your only substitute option. The sesame chicken was generously portioned but drowned in a cloyingly sweet sauce that overpowered everything. Any crispness was lost, and the sesame seeds were nothing more than a garnish. A few limp broccoli florets were hidden at the bottom, equally saturated and forgettable. The meal was overpriced for the quality. This restaurant isn't worth a repeat. A frozen entrée from the supermarket would likely be more satisfying and cost-effective. read more

Ordered Kung pao and curry chicken along with two orders of vegetable fried rice and crab Rangoon. Total was $40 and change. The Kung pao chicken was subpar and far more sweet than spicy. The curry chicken was average. The fried rice was an abomination. It tasted and looked like it was cooked in old, dirty, oil. We thew both orders in the trash. Fried rice: great, bright peas & carrots too Crab Rangoon: perfect amount of sweetness, not a lot of crab Egg roll: good taste, but barely filled & different wrap than the Rangoon. I've had better. Honey chicken: very surprised at the fresh taste & the large chunks of chicken. More chicken to breading! Very fresh & tasted perfect. My 2 kids loved! Szechuan chicken: fantastic non breaded chicken dish w very slight heat. So the ONLY bad thing about this place is they don't deliver. Seriously, that's the only thing I could intentionally seek out to make a fuss. This is the way Chinese takeout should be. It is always fresh, fast, and accurate. The combination fried rice will NOT disappoint. The protein and rice ratio is on point and it's flavorful rather than being bland. The Lo Mein is perfectly cooked. No crunchy noodles here. My favorite is the beef and broccoli ! They aren't stingy on the beef nor do they overlook the broccoli. From the time it takes to place an order to completion, no more than 8.45 minutes! The quickest and tastiest I have tasted in a very long time! read more

Well either Yelp has bad information or the restaurant screwed me...the prices for the special combo are not correct. I ordered 2 at $6.95, based on the menu on yelp, so unless tax is at about 25% then I assume they charged the wrong price. I ordered it exactly as it was stated on the menu. Food was great, tasted good, however the portion size was mediocre at best compared to other Chinese take out places in Kansas City. Defiantly not likely to go back. 33 seconds - the time it took for me to call them, place 3 separate orders, and have it repeated back to me along with the total and pick-up time. That has seriously got to be a record, yes? I am all for efficiency! So I bow down to them. First time I tried this place, I called 10 minutes ahead to order, and it was ready for us to eat when we arrived. The restaurant is small, so we didn't stay long (10 minutes to eat and refilled our own drinks at the soda station). I am willing to drive farther, forgoing probably 6 or more closer Chinese restaurants, for Chinatown's well-priced, well-proportioned food. Side note: don't order the lo mein. Honestly, I don't know why I ordered it, because it seems the case with every restaurant that it's entirely too greasy. It's not bad, but I feel my insides slowly dying. Chinatown Express not only brought back memories of my favorite Chinese place from High School ( it shall remain nameless due to it's severe fall from favor), but it's super cheap and has the best flavor of any I've tried lately. I ordered Shrimp with Garlic Sauce and it was loaded with awesome veggies including these little black squiggly things that are mushroom-esque in taste and nature and I have no idea what they are. We asked once at said "High School Favorite" and the tiny Asian lady told us and said it helps "clean you out". So while I forgot the name, I have never forgotten this little black squiggle's possible detoxing abilities. For 6.75 plus tax you get fried rice, shrimp with garlic sauce packed with bell peppers, onion, water chestnuts, broccoli, and little black squiggles of detox potential. You also get an eggroll and a crab rangoon. The kids got fried rice and chicken lo mein. Hubby got his standard General Tso's Chicken. It was all good. All of it. What more could you want?! Soup. You could want soup. In our hunger, we forgot to order soup. You can make bad decisions when you're famished. Here's another one: We forgot to take pictures. We tore into the sack and scarfed down all the yumminess without one photo. And I call myself Elite! For shame! I never thought I'd see the light of day that I would rate an Americanized Chinese restaurant 5 stars, but alas, Chinatown Express has the absolute best fried rice I've had in all of the KC metro area - and I have had quite a bit. I'm actually sorry that I like it so much because I'm moving in a couple of weeks down south, away from the Northland. The people who work here are pleasant, and I don't feel one bit awkward about being Chinese and picking up food here, as I tend to, when I pick up food that would shame my Chinese heritage. I'm generally mildly embarrassed when I walk into these establishments because I feel like I shouldn't be eating the Americanized food. Did I already mention that the fried rice here is fantastic? The chicken is perfectly tender, and there's plenty of bite-sized pieces to satisfy the rice to protein ratio. I also like their crab fried rice, despite my boyfriend's dislike for it. They do use imitation crab, if anyone cares about that. Very few places use real crab meat in their fried rice, and when they do, it's generally at Thai restaurants. Their crab rangoons are good, one of the better places I've had in the KC area - that is, if you like your crab rangoons on the sweeter side. That's how I prefer mine, since that's what I grew up on (no, it's not authentic, I just come from a family of restaurateurs). The spring rolls are average here, though it's difficult to find any average Americanized Chinese restaurant that doesn't use frozen spring rolls - probably all from the same manufacturer. They do appear to have an extensive menu, so that they can have something for everyone. I tend to stick to the lesser Americanized food, such as fried rice. Regardless, I'm sure that their other food is great for those with more Americanized palettes. I first chose this place because it was super close, but it turns out that it is actually really good! The broccoli beef was delicious, and their crab rangoons are amazing! I'm also a fan of their egg drop soup, and I'm really picky about how that tastes. For the price, they give you tons of food! I think my meal was $8 and with that I got rice, broccoli beef and two sides. Their spring rolls are also really good, but I'll pass on the egg roll next time. Ehhhhhh it's okay. I wanted to be more impressed because they have a fairly extensive menu and the staff are some of the friendlier bunch I have dealt with at a Chinese restaurant (after Hunan Garden in Gladstone). Buuuuuut my order of crab fried rice was pretty tasteless, which is very disappointing because they were extremely generous with the meat. It tasted similar to when you eat something and you have a cold. Like you can kind of taste it and you're trying really hard to taste it more, but you can't. You know what I mean? If you dine in, you'll literally control the entire restaurant if your party is around ten people. There are only two booths and this little table next to them. But that's okay, because in the extremely unlikely event that I'm sitting around with nine other people, unsure about what to do for dinner, I wouldn't recommend here. I suspect I'm being a little harsh, but I found it to be below average. I'm surprised at the high rating. This was a rare time Yelp led me astray. We ordered from this restaurant last night. We were first and foremost surprised to be told they do not deliver. Who ever heard of a Chinese restaurant that doesn't deliver?? But no matter, we have working legs and reliable transportation, so we went to pick up our order ourselves. The store is small. Like, tiny. There were about four tables in the place. This is not a place that I would choose for dining in. So basically, if you want this place's food, it's carry-out only. The food itself was pretty dang good. We shared the crab rangoons, which were delicious. I had an order of shrimp fried rice. The order was so large I could only finish about half, so I had plenty leftover for another meal. My boyfriend ordered sweet and sour chicken and an order of chicken fried rice. The fried rice he seemed to like just fine. I tried the sweet and sour chicken, and I have to say I was impressed. The chicken was crisp, without being overly dry or crunchy. Overall, I would recommend this place for a late, lazy weeknight when you simply don't want to cook. The food is decent. But if you're looking for an actual dining experience, or you expect to be impressed by the food, go elsewhere. read more

I am a frequent customer and am usually satisfied with everything I've ordered. Tonight I carried out an order including an awful entree, Princess Shrimp. Floppy gooey blob was very dry, almost gelatinous. I paid for extra shrimp but had a very hard time finding just a few. The shrimp and very few vegetables were over cooked. Called to relay my dissatisfaction in hopes that the chef never serves this mess again. They offered to remake the dish or a credit. The food here is excellent and the portions are massive. With the $7.25 dinner platter you get the huge portion and a spring roll AND crab Rangoon. It's enough for two people almost. My only complaint is the inside. I would personally never eat in this place, it's too small and has a a not so appealing hole-in-the-wall look. But the food quality trumps all of that.
