Beef chow fun and Chicken chunk with golden mushrooms hot pot

This hot pot was so full of flavor! It was all fresh, hot, and delicious. The service was attentive and kind. I appreciate this restaurant for sharing some of their culture with us! Cannot wait to bring back a group and enjoy the family style dining.

    "Seafood" tofu soup

$17 for a soup with tofu, 3 shrimp, mushrooms, tofu and egg drop. Really disappointed. Didn't tell me the price when I called it in, didn't tell me how long. Didn't send me out the door with a spoon. Called to ask if I got the right thing bc I was so disappointed and flabbergasted. They said ok thanks for telling us. Wow.

Delicious food! Even a simple dish like the crab Rangoon was exemplary!

We tried the crab Rangoon and schezuan chicken. Both were absolutely delicious! We will most definitely be back to try more items.

After a long day of errands my wife and I were starving. So of course I fire up the Yelp app and we were pleased to learn that Hong Kong Star was in close proximity. We decided to do takeout since we knew a good nap always follows great chinese food. We ordered ahead and I only had to wait about 5 minutes before our food was ready. The inside was awesome and very clean. The staff was superb and made general small talk with me while I waited. The menu is both american, and traditional chinese cuisine. I'm not too adventurous so I ordered the General Tso's chicken with house fried rice. My wife ordered the salt fish with rice. Both meals were superb and far exceeded our expectations. We will for sure be back, and plan on dining in when we do.

I always love Hong Kong Star. Tonight we had the chow kway teow that I've had numerous times and the salt and pepper squid, shrimp, scallop. Both were great. I ordered the salt and pepper squid dish without onion.

When expectation based on other reviews here creates a very high bar it may be difficult to live up to the hype. But just objectively evaluating the cuisine alone compared to the best Chinese (not necessarily Cantonese) meals I have experienced, this was nice but not excellent. The roast duck was nicely done and was clearly freshly prepared unlike many places in the Midwest. Perhaps my preference for Peking duck contributed to my overall lack of enthusiasm for their offering. The spice and herb essence just not my fav. My second dish which was the Shrimp Chow Fun was completely unmemorable. While it contained a good number of shrimp, the sauce was completely dull and the noodles did little to save the dish. I'm left wondering if my menu choices were just a miss on my part or if growing up in California has made my standard too high? Regardless, I probably won't make the effort to go out of my way for a return visit. A final couple notes: Service and hospitality were gracious and very attentive. Ambience despite being clean is about a 2 out of 10.

It's a small restaurant but the Chinese food is pretty decent. Most of the dishes are more from the southern part of China. The tofu pot was pretty good the service could be better. Probably will go back to try their crispy fried chicken see if it's good, it needs 30 mins to prepare for it.

First of all, the food is AMAZING!! order from the "real" Chinese menu, our dishes were recommended and they were delicious! There is an american Chinese menu that I'm sure is good too. The best crab Rangoon I've had, the wonton was so light and the filling was so good! The staff was so sweet too!

I was in the mood for some Chicken Fried Rice, so I decided to enter this location. When I entered, the associate informed me it was open seating, so I sat down at a table. I was waiting at the table for more than five minutes before I was served menus and water and the establishment wasn't busy, so I was slightly displeased with the service. There are a lot of items to choose from on the menu, but I ordered the Pan Seared Dumplings and Chicken Fried Rice. The dumplings were good, had great flavor, and paired well with the sauce that was provided. The Chicken Fried Rice had good flavors, it was served very hot, and it was filling. The portion size is large and I almost didn't finish it all. Overall, I'm satisfied with my experience here. The associates were kind, professional, and people-oriented. I enjoyed the food that I ordered, and I recommend anyone wanting some good food to come to this location. I will be returning to try different food options.

Right off the highway, Hong Kong Star is a hidden gem with authentic flavors. We enjoyed the calamari, basil seafood, and Singapore noodles! Each dish was packed with flavor and our meal came with refillable steamed white rice and very spicy hot chili oil.

Some of the best Chinese food you'll find in the greater KC area! Especially since ABC has gone way downhill recently, Hong Kong Star is a real gem. Their Chow Fun noodles come out smoking hot with perfectly chewy noodles and savory beef, and their other authentic Chinese classics are similarly great. Some of my favorites are the Mongolian Beef (*love*), Salt and Pepper Squid, and Seafood Pan Fried Noodles. They've also got a fantastic lunch special where you can get an entree, side soup, and an eggroll for $9 (dine-in only). The only problem with Hong Kong Star is its inconsistency. There are days where some dishes are much saltier than normal or the duck comes out dry, so I tend to avoid those dishes and stick to what's dependable. I would really mix the Salt and Pepper Squid/Tofu before you eat to make sure the salt is evenly distributed. In my opinion, this definitely isn't a reason not to come and deny yourself the great options this place has.

Even encouraged the children to hand us our water glasses after they had been crawling around on the floor. I don't have a problem with children being there but not being rowdy in the dining area while the parents were in the kitchen. That's not enjoyable for diners, and quite frankly not safe for the children.

We ordered on a machine (customers after us ordered through a human). We got water cups and she hands them to her two year old, who had been crawling on the floor, so he could hand them to us. His hands were filthy and he was eating as well. He was all of two with a brother maybe 5-6. We sat to wait and the parents were in the back while their kids ran and screamed throughout. We got a text indicating our food was ready but she indicated it wasn't. Meanwhile just as she was about to bring the food out, two year old walks over and tries to put half eaten food on our little table. I looked at her and said, we're just trying to relax and wait on our meal. Please don't let the children climb on our chairs, put food on our table. She grabbed the lil guy and stared me down. I'm sorry you're a restaurant owner, the place is already dirty so don't judge me because of parental shortcomings. Btw, the food was bland and soggy. Packets of spicy mustard and soy were required. Never again.

By the time I grabbed our food and headed back out, the front spots had already opened up again. We did two lunch specials for around $20 total, which feels like a steal for how much food you get and how good it was. We ordered the Chicken with Cashew and the General Tso's lunch specials, both came with soup and a side. The cashew chicken was seriously incredible. A lot of places overload this dish with veggies until it turns into chaos, but this one was balanced with the right mix of ingredients and is easily one of my new favorites in KC. Only bummer: hardly any cashews. Still delicious, but I wanted a little more cashew love. Crab rangoons were hot and crispy with a solid filling even after a bit of a drive home. The fried rice had great flavor, and the steamed white rice was bouncy and soft, not that kind with crispy dry edges. Both soups were spot on, and THANK YOU for including wonton strips. A lot of places skip them and it really can make or break egg drop soup for me. General Tso's had great flavor, but the chicken pieces were a little big and it wasn't very spicy, even though we didn't order it no spicy. Not a dealbreaker, just something to know if you want that classic kick. Inside is clean and cute with tables for about 8 to 10 small groups, the front desk is toward the back, and everyone was kind and helpful. As an Elite, I also loved seeing their Yelp pride around the restaurant. Overall, super solid lunch specials and I'll absolutely be back!!
