We decided to do takeout since we knew a good nap always follows great chinese food. We ordered ahead and I only had to wait about 5 minutes before our food was ready. The inside was awesome and very clean. The staff was superb and made general small talk with me while I waited. The menu is both american, and traditional chinese cuisine. I'm not too adventurous so I ordered the General Tso's chicken with house fried rice. My wife ordered the salt fish with rice. Both meals were superb and far exceeded our expectations. This has become a favorite for us! Simple, very clean setting, delicious food, extensive menu different than what might be used to. The staff is very nice and helpful. M loves the orange chicken that is so lightly batter fried you can barely tell there is a coating. I've gotten several different dishes but most often the broccoli chicken. The chicken is delicately cooked and very tender. Tonight, though, I'm going to try something different. I'm getting the salt and pepper shrimp, calamari and scallops. When expectation based on other reviews here creates a very high bar it may be difficult to live up to the hype. But just objectively evaluating the cuisine alone compared to the best Chinese (not necessarily Cantonese) meals I have experienced, this was nice but not excellent. The roast duck was nicely done and was clearly freshly prepared unlike many places in the Midwest. Perhaps my preference for Peking duck contributed to my overall lack of enthusiasm for their offering. The spice and herb essence just not my fav. My second dish which was the Shrimp Chow Fun was completely unmemorable. While it contained a good number of shrimp, the sauce was completely dull and the noodles did little to save the dish. I'm left wondering if my menu choices were just a miss on my part or if growing up in California has made my standard too high? Regardless, I probably won't make the effort to go out of my way for a return visit. A final couple notes: Service and hospitality were gracious and very attentive. I was waiting at the table for more than five minutes before I was served menus and water and the establishment wasn't busy, so I was slightly displeased with the service. There are a lot of items to choose from on the menu, but I ordered the Pan Seared Dumplings and Chicken Fried Rice. The dumplings were good, had great flavor, and paired well with the sauce that was provided. The Chicken Fried Rice had good flavors, it was served very hot, and it was filling. The portion size is large and I almost didn't finish it all. Overall, I'm satisfied with my experience here. The associates were kind, professional, and people-oriented. Hands-down the best and most fresh Chinese food you'll get in Kansas. We ordered the beef chow fun, the beef was so tender and the noodles were so juicy and savory. Some of the best Chinese food you'll find in the greater KC area! Especially since ABC has gone way downhill recently, Hong Kong Star is a real gem. Their Chow Fun noodles come out smoking hot with perfectly chewy noodles and savory beef, and their other authentic Chinese classics are similarly great. Some of my favorites are the Mongolian Beef (*love*), Salt and Pepper Squid, and Seafood Pan Fried Noodles. They've also got a fantastic lunch special where you can get an entree, side soup, and an eggroll for $9 (dine-in only). The only problem with Hong Kong Star is its inconsistency. There are days where some dishes are much saltier than normal or the duck comes out dry, so I tend to avoid those dishes and stick to what's dependable. I would really mix the Salt and Pepper Squid/Tofu before you eat to make sure the salt is evenly distributed. In my opinion, this definitely isn't a reason not to come and deny yourself the great options this place has. read more

I was in Kansas City for the weekend and I like to visit highly-rated local restaurants when I travel. This was the place today. When I first saw the building I wasn't sure the restaurant was still open. The storefront area is rather small in a strip-mall-style building. I was there for supper just after the end of daylight savings time. Some of the other businesses had much brighter lights. I pulled into the parking lot and saw it immediately. It's the second business from the street. I decided to try some standard items to see how they are in case I want to come back and be more adventurous later this weekend. I ordered egg drop soup, vegetarian spring rolls (2), and sesame chicken with fried rice. The soup, rice, and spring rolls were brought out almost immediately. The spring rolls were very hot so I started with the soup. It was warm and not too salty. The broth was more thick than straight water. It was very satisfactory. Next I tried the spring rolls. The wrapping on the rolls was very light and crisp. These were still quite warm when I ate them and the interior was a bit on the mushy side. I'm not sure I would try them again. The sesame chicken came out as I was finishing the soup. It was quite hot so I decided to let it cool while I ate the spring rolls. The service was quite good. While ordering, the waitress was happy to answer my questions about the menu and, after the food arrived, was very quick to take away dirty dishes. She also refilled my water glass as soon as it reached half full. I would also note that entire restaurant was very clean and the operator clearly pays attention to cleanliness. The sesame chicken breading was crisp without being crunchy, and the chicken was not chewy or tough. I found the dish quite filling and satisfactory. Overall, I'm considering a trip back this weekend to try something else. I was impressed by the cleanliness, the quality of the chicken, and the service. The soup and sesame chicken were prepared to perfection. I don't know what happened with the spring rolls. If you value quality ingredients in food that isn't over-or under-cooked, and isn't over salted like so many egg drop soups are, you might want to give this place a try. read more

This Chinese new year we had a little get-together at Hong Kong Star Chinese Restaurant for our New Year dinner. The restaurant specializes in Cantonese-style Chinese cuisine, my favorite type of Chinese food. The dinner was an amazing experience, thanks to the fantastic company. The restaurant is especially renowned for its clay pot dishes, which we ordered - a beef brisket and tendon clay pot and a tofu pot. Both were simply delicious! We also had the tender, juicy roast duck, accompanied with the restaurant's special house dip. The Cantonese style crispy fried chicken was pre-ordered, requiring 30 minutes preparation, but it was certainly worth the wait: the meat was succulent, flavorful and perfectly caramelized with a crispy skin. Moreover, the black pepper beef really stood out - coated with a well balanced black pepper sauce and stir fried to perfection, the meat was unbelievably tender and flavorful. A steamed whole flounder is a must-have for a New Year's Day dinner as it symbolizes well-being and prosperity. It's delicately prepared with classic Cantonese-style soy sauce and ginger. We also enjoyed a rich and delicious spread of braised duck with mixed vegetables, crab and fish maw soup, steamed and pan-fried dumplings, walnut shrimp, Peking ribs, ginger and scallion-steamed chicken, stir-fried bok choy, fried rice, and stir-fried rice noodles. Terrible customer service, they were extremely rude. We showed up for dinner and we waited to talk to the host only for then to just look at us and ask what we wanted. We asked to be seated for two adults and a child and they said no they had no tables when there were empty tables all over the restaurant and then corrected themself saying it was a private party. Everybody else was closed and they were super nice and helpful to take our order on the phone and we went to pick up. We didn't had a great time sitting in the Restaurant because we were just there to pick up but I can tell you that they have great food. We tried their fried noodles, dumplings soup and everything looked great. It was huge quantities so we definitely had it for another meal too. We ordered a seafood skillet. It came perfect, it looks like a local Asian or a Chinese restaurant as an ambience. We had the crab Rangoon, fried rice and Mongolian beef. All were great!!! We did venture out and try an entree with "egg sauce" but we didn't exactly have the palate for that. Hong King currently is requiring masks to enter into the restaurant, as well as all staff are masked up. Which pleased me. They were friendly and greeted us promptly. We ordered two appetizers and two entrees. The crab Rangoon's were crisp and fresh. They serve automatically with sweet & sour sauce, you need to ask for mustard if you want it. We also had the calamari. It was served in a bed of lettuce and jalapeños that added extra flavor. I ordered beef fried rice, nothing mind blowing but still tasty. This is my new favorite Chinese restaurant and get in my top three list of the Chinese restaurants in big KC area. After 3 years of searching, finally found another one that fits my standard of Hong Kong style eatery in big KC area. I got the Yong Chou fried rice, black pepper chicken feet and seafood tofu hotpot to go. Because I actually didn't plan to go there for lunch, I happen to find it when I was around for my car adjustment. And that trip was like 30 min drive from my place. The restaurant is spacious and it does not have the greasy smell ( if you've been to any Chinatown in any big major city, you know the smell) but the location was like in the middle of no where... The portion is really generous. I really need to them score for the fried rice. Although the fried rice is like the basic stuff in Chinese culture, but it's not easy to cook it right or good. Their fried rice was not overly greasy, overcooked and the not overly seasoned. And yes, it does not have oyster sauce or whatever sauce that should not been in there for Yong Chou fried rice. On the side note, they add pork, chicken and shrimp in it, in generous amount of protein. The chicken feet was great, and it was processed to be easy to eat. The seafood tofu, again, no soy sauce or overly velveting. It was light and fresh and also generous amount of fresh seafood!!! I will definitely go back to try more stuff on their menu, even thought it means I need to take an hour trip (back and forth) for the dining experience. read more

I'm not a fan of food deliveries so ordered via their website today and picked the order up. Great website to order food, easy scroll and checkout. Now let's come to food. Delicious is the word. Not too salty just balanced flavors and not sweet at all which I extremely liked. Robust flavors shouting from every dish is what I loved and I'm thrilled to have a new favorite chinese spot just minutes away. Our pan fried chicken noodles were packed separately and the soup/sauce that came with it was perfectly filled in a large container. This was very impressive since the noodles are supposed to stay crisp and we did not miss dining in the restaurant specifically for that experience at all! We got two of those and still have a lot of leftovers. Love the portions. Not complaining. Chicken lo mein was spot on! I mentioned 'hot and spicy' in the special instructions tab while ordering online so they gave a super spicy chilli sauce with the order which is most appreciated because we love spicy! Came here because this gem made it in Yelp Kansas City's top 50 2019 list. I also love Chinese food, and have been trying to find a good, more authentic place in KC. Would like to point out that this is probably one of neatest/ cleanest restaurants I've been to. Now for the food: definitely impressed by the variety of menu items. The menu is also customizable (can switch ingredients in dishes on the menu). I got the eggplant hotpot with chicken instead of pork. DELICIOUS. The sauce wasn't too salty, and I could taste the subtle ginger & garlic flavors throughout the dish. It was sooo much food too for a reasonable price. There was a large party seated at the table in front of me. All of the dishes they ordered looked AMAZING as well, and I was getting major dish envy.
