Usually I assume the "hole-in-the-wall" joints to be hidden gems. Unfortunately this was not the case for this restaurant. Set up like a food court stall inside, the food isn't fresh, nor is it flavorful. You're better off going somewhere else. read more

I have ate at this restaurant for many years, they have been here for 17 years. This is a true family owned business, and the staff are all so friendly. There food is really good as long as you don't have your mind set on a certain place like Panda Express. For the price, these plates of food is a really great deal. Portion sizes are massive, I never can finish a whole plate myself. They have a nice selection of food, but not the biggest, same with variety of sodas too. Their chicken egg rolls are the best, freshly homemade, and real chicken and vegetables in the inside, not the fake processed stuff. They have really great fresh fruit smoothies too. All in all, this isn't authentic Chinese food, but it is a lot closer then a lot of places around here. Most Americans don't even know what authentic Chinese food really is. This is exactly the kind of Chinese food I thought it would be. It's like a Panda Express environment but maybe like not quite a notch below. If were going to rate Panda on here I would give it 4 stars, this place is 3. The food is not fancy, it's not super tasty although it is good as long as you like that kind of thing. It is a good bargain though. $6.20 for enough food to make basically 3 meals for me. The chow mein was fine, the fried rice was fine, the orange chicken was decent, egg roll was good and the Egg Foo Young was actually the best thing I had there though I recommend skipping the gravy (bland and really? Gravy?!) As long as you're not expecting gourmet this is a great little cheap Chinese takeout place. I thought the staff was more than just passably friendly too. read more

Been taking classes nearby at Mira Costa and have been trying the food joints in this little strip mall. Chinatown express was one of those places. The service was nice enough, and the combos are pretty much what you'd expect from a small chinese take out place. Nothing tasted exceptional though. Oh well. read more

Came here from lunch after my shift at the nearby hospital. Staff was friendly and patient while I was ordering. Not much selection compared to what I'm used to in LA. I got the 2 item combo - low mein, orange chicken, and BBQ pork. The price point is typical for a Chinese fast food establishment. The noodles were flavored okay and soft. The orange chicken was sweeter than I would've liked. They don't have real BBQ pork, it's just cut up pork chop with red sauce. It's sad because the kitchen staff is Chinese. Merry Christmas to us you assholes. Food poisoning is just what we wanted for Christmas. Throw out food that is spoiled and don't serve to customers because you're too cheap! For what it is, Chinatown Express definitely deserves 4 stars. Chinese takeout is absolutely a favorite of mine so when I discovered this little gem less than 5 minutes from my apartment I practically died of happiness. It is similar to Panda Express but a tad bit less Americanized as well as a dollar or two cheaper. Not to mention the portion sizes are HUGE! One $7 combo plate is enough for 2-3 people to share! The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because I personally enjoy orange chicken on the crunchy spicy side instead of very sweet, which is how they prepare theirs. Also, everytime I have gone, the fried rice has been a bit dry. Not much of a big deal to me because I prefer their lomen and chomein but still a bummer when I am craving the rice. Overrall Chinatown Express is a pretty decent fast food American/Chinese takeout restaurant! I will continue to go and reccomend to those who like a nice greasy carby meal every once in awhile! :D read more

Huge portions, good price, decent food. Egg rolls are good but could be crispier. Probably depends on when you get them. Bbq pork is ok, tends to be dry. Orange chicken was orange chicken, the teriyaki chicken tends to taste fresher. All in all our go to place for fast, friendly, inexpensive "chineese" food. read more
