As much as I love Mongolian BBQ, having had it regularly ever since going to college up at UCLA, I am being forced to face the glaring reality that Great Khan's isn't all that good. I've been here five times in the last two years or so. And three of those times I've had the misfortune of biting down on a bit of dirt, bone, or something else that made me think that I had just chipped a tooth. It's a jarring experience, that I usually chalk up as an expected hazard when eating anything from carved off an animal or grown in the ground. But, when going out for a salad, you should only expect a rock hidden in your lettuce once every five years or so ... not half of all trips. Also, the bowls seem to have gotten smaller, while the costs have increased. It used to be you could fill your bowl with slices of frozen meat, ready to plop noodles on top. But, now they give you much smaller starting cups where you put 4-5 slices in before they start threatening to spill out. It makes the finished product skew much more heavily toward the starch of those noodles instead of the salty beef and pork that should be the center, or at least an equal share, of the dish. And speaking of those noodles, the last couple of times I've been here, there has been an underlying flavor to them that has been off-putting. I don't know if they've changed recipes or vendors recently, or if my palette is changing, but that stale, medicine-like, chemical, whatever you want to call it, taste that they seem to have now comes to the forefront of every bite I take. And without that proper amount of meat, or without an overwhelming amount of hot sauce or seasoning, that off-putting flavor can become very dominant overall. Sadly, there's not a lot of options when it comes to this style of cuisine. Typically, if you get a bowl of noodles and meat, it's gonna have some kind of tomato sauce on it, not the stir fry you're hoping for. The food here used to be a nice delight, but lately it's drifting more into a hit and miss kind of place. And with Great Khan's being so far flung from home, it's quickly becoming not worth the trip. read more

Came here after going to an Escape Room because my buddy was craving some Mongolian BBQ and we used to go all the time back in High School. No all you can eat option, but same great smells and flavor. You need to pack it in to get your moneys worth. Dont be shy. My buddy was and he regretted it. I had spice this time and it was divine. You then add your meat (beef, chicken, pork, and/or chicken breast) and then your choice of vegetables. You then take your bowl to the chefs that cook it on spot. The chefs add noodles and ask you how you want it flavored. The service is pretty fast and friendly. The decor consists of countertops and tables. The chairs could be a little more comfortable. Pro tip: pack down your bowls with a paper towel so you can get more food! The chefs are very liberal with the noodles, too. read more

You have 3 bowl options to choose from and quite a bit of protein to choose from (beef, chicken, pork, chicken breast). Veggies ate next with a good amount of choices. Take it to the cooks and they'll add noodles and ask how you want it flavored. Also pack your bowl down with a napkin to load up more food. Definitely tip the cooks, they take care of you. read more

Today, i walked up to the counter, chose the regular bowl which came out to $16.00 even. i payed via apple pay, received the notification that i payed, and started to make my way to make my bowl. when starting, the cashier advised me i needed to pay again because it did not go through. i showed them on my end the time the charge happened, the exact amount, etc. they did not believe me and attempted to have me pay again. i let them know how odd this is and that it doesn't make sense for me to pay again for a single bowl. another associate came over and showed me their side of the screen, which means nothing to me when i'm looking at money that has already left my account labeled for this establishment. i asked him "you understand how weird this is right?" and he insisted i pay again. i decided to just walk away from the situation empty handed at a $16 loss. not cool. read more

I've been coming to this place since I was young, and it honestly hurts to write this, but the quality has gone way downhill. This restaurant used to be a go-to for my family--great flavors, solid portions, and good-quality meat. Unfortunately, that's no longer the case. The biggest disappointment is the beef. What used to be tender and flavorful is now mostly fat and gristle. I barely got a few decent bites before having to push the rest aside. It feels like the quality of ingredients has been seriously downgraded, while the prices have stayed the same (or gone up). Loyal customers notice these changes. We come back expecting the food we grew up loving, and instead we're left feeling disappointed. Whenever I review a Mongolian barbecue, I always base it on my experiences at the former Great Wall barbecue across from San Marcos State University. Unfortunately, they're not there anymore to me. They're the gold standard. Great Khan probably is a low bronze medal winner. The noodles I thought were a joke. They sit there on the side of the work table piled up like raggedy Andy's hair. I didn't realize what they were until I looked and didn't see them on the choice line. I would prefer lots more vegetable choices. I'm not a vegetarian, but I find that Mongolian barbecue taste a lot better when you mix in more vegetables and not so much of the meat choices. Just my preference tune 23 to one. Like Aly wrote in her review, the beef there has become disgusting and almost entirely fat. I have been going to Mongolian Grill for about 10 years and it was one of my favorite places before this "change". Unless this changes back. I will never go there again. I went in today to see if they got their normal beef back, but it was still the fatty disgusting stuff. See the picture below where the beef on the right is approximately 50% fat and usually it is much worse. Contrary to what the owner says it does not "melt in your mouth" but instead is like eating gristle. I will plan on stopping in every few months to check and see if it is fixed but otherwise I will never go there again. Cutting corners like this is penny wise and pound foolish as Mongolian grill is losing countless customers just to save a couple bucks. read more

I've been eating here well over two decades these noodles are one of my favorite things to reward myself with on Friday after work to the start of my weekend. I recommend eating this fresh! Either eat it there or sometimes I dip out to my car. It's never changed and if you look yakisoba noodles then you will love these! The noodles are a little bit thicker but so dank, like the noodles from Panda Express but you get to pick what's mixed in with it. Also, when you get to the area when they ask you what kind of sauce you want, get extra sauce it hits the spot every time. I could eat it several times a week lol. I don't think I've ever taken a pic bc I can't wait to eat them while their steamy, maybe next time lol. read more

tucked away in the cavernous depths of a mall that has evolved over five decades from the shopping destination where giggling teeny boppers bought blacklight posters, scented candles, and bell bottom jeans to where aging boomers mall walk, catch a movie, and go to the gym is the GREAT KHAN's MONGOLIAN GRILL. happily, I've reached the point in my life where packing my bowl forcefully enough to squeeze two meals outta one visit is less a survival strategy than nostalgia. it's a self-serve set up where you load your bowl with raw proteins (shaved beef, pork, and chicken) and veggies (carrots, cabbage, onions, sprouts, etc.) and hand it off to the grill guys to be sauced, noodled, and cooked on a circular flat top. I can't speak to the authenticity of the food (though I have my suspicions) it's filling, inexpensive, and fun. ps: if you haven't been in a while or if this is your first visit, GREAT KHAN's has relocated from the middle of the mall down to the "Sears" end. read more

If you're trying to elevate the experience then have beef belly as well as BEEF both as options and provide more options to customers but don't ruin a great place. The owner is incredibly rude, hostile, and unprofessional -- avoid this place. I've been to many Mongolian BBQ spots, and never have I dealt with such a negative experience. The whole concept is fill-your-own-bowl, but this owner literally watches over customers like a hawk and warns you not to "overfill" or you'll be charged more. If that's such a problem, maybe switch to staff-portioned bowls instead of humiliating your customers for doing what's advertised. We've also found bugs in the broccoli before -- that alone should've been the final straw. The quality doesn't match the price at all: $15 per plate for thinly sliced meat and basic vegetables? Ridiculous. On this visit, the owner kept walking back and forth, muttering things under his breath, then returning to make more passive-aggressive comments. It was uncomfortable, unnecessary, and completely unprofessional. Save your money. There are plenty of other Mongolian BBQ places that don't treat their customers like they're a burden. read more

I try not to be too critical about restaurants I go to. I know how hard offering good food and service is since I was in the industry for thirteen years. Having said that there is little I can say that is good about this restaurant. From the time we approached the counter it was obvious that the owners were not interested in developing business. The signage was turned off. The person greeting us was not even at the counter. He was out in the mall on his phone. Not very personable either. There was nothing on the counter to promote the restaurant. It's just completely uninviting. Also, they offer an item with soup but they had no soup this night. This is not an all-you-can-eat like other Mongolian BBQ we have eaten. You get one small bowl in witch to place your selections. Pressing everything down is the only way to add sufficient ingredients for your meal. The selection of vegetables is limited and not well presented. You don't get to make your own sauce which is important to me. You can have it made mild medium or hot. It is served with a large amount of noodles which I don't mind. The food is served in a to go box which is nice if you can't eat everything but a bowl would be nicer. It is also served very hot also not a bad thing just be careful with your first bite. There are no extras. In fact the eating area is stark with no personally at all. In fact the place looks like it is ready to close its doors. There is just not much good to say about this place. Even the food is tasteless. I could not add enough soy sauce to make it taste like something even if I could get soy sauce. They only had very small bags behind the counter in a drawer that you had to ask for. Seems like soy sauce would be out on the counter with other condiments so you can adjust the flavorless food to your liking. There was hot sauce on some of the tables. I was able to get some after a someone left. I was hoping it would add some flavor but it was just a vinegary mess no help at all. Do yourself a favor and don't spend time here. It's pricey for what it is: an extremely casual, quick service food court situation with minimal options and probably not the highest quality of food. The meat is all thin frozen slices of meat that shrink a lot after cooking: the bowls don't fit a lot of stuff. There's not too much variety like other Mongolian bbq places I've been to and I don't like how you must pay for a side of rice (can't choose rice: they only do noodle option). You can't go back for seconds or unlimited like some other Mongolian bbq places unless you buy another bowl and it's not cheap (for 3 people, only one of us getting a drink cost over $50 and like I said, not a lot of stuff fits into the bowls to begin with so I felt a little ripped off). I guess after the noodles get added in it's a decent amount of food, but it just would be nice to be able to add more of the meat or veggies so proportions aren't seemingly 90% starch. Also, not sure if this place upsets stomachs or if it was something else we are- but me, my mom, and my fiancé all said our stomachs hurt (it digested but not well lol). On that note, another con is that the bathroom is on the other side of the mall. That being said, the positive is that it is tasty and I got introduced to a cool new hot sauce from eat there (the hot sauce bottle of Chinchu Vietnamese hot sauce there was very interesting). Over all though, I would not do it again because price/value do not seem to line up for me. The new location is at the very end of the mall where Sears is. The prices definitely went up. I would say that's my only complaint, but I get it. A bowl and drink is $14.99. After you pay you get a tray, empty bowl to fill up, and a drink cup. Go through the line and choose which meats you'd like -chicken,beef, etc. They have a great selection of veggies to add in. The counter tops are kept clean, wiped down as people make their way down the line. The ingredients are fresh, changed out periodically. Once your ready the cook asks what level spice you'd like and adds the noodles. The food is then packaged in a brown to-go box which is convenient than having a plate and switching out the food later on. Plastic bags are hung up so you can grab and go, they have your typical soda machine. There are other options besides sodas like green tea, raspberry tea, etc. There is more space here for seating, also great for larger parties. read more

Each time, every time we found the facility to be clean, the meat (pork, chicken & beef) and vegetable offerings fresh and ultimately tasty. Of importance is the very efficient manner in which the contents (meat-veggie) bowl is stir fried on a very hot circular stone. Price point = $30 for two adults. Didn't see any children's pricing advertised so conclude children eat off of parent's plate. Note also that sometimes the frozen meat offerings aren't always replenished in a timely manner. But said Carlsbad restaurant remains one of our "go to" venues...thanks! read more

I thought She sees me that's OK I'll wait around I waited for another four minutes and all she would do is look up another family showed up right behind me and we had to stay there another three minutes. I let her know hey we are ready to order and she automatically got angry and stated that she was cleaning for us that she needed to clean so that when I got my food it was clean area for everybody! I told her that that wasn't a problem & I understand she's cleaning cause it's part of her job. After telling her she still did not come and help us she continued to clean and make us wait even more time. I spoke to the manager and all he said was she's so stressed because we only have one employee in my thoughts it's not OK for us to be treated that way when all I was letting her know was that we were ready after already waiting a long time.
