Chinaway Restaurant - General Tso with crab rangoon and pork fried rice - Chinese Near Me - Newport, Maine

I had a craving for Chinese food heading back to So Maine from Greenville. This restaurant is pretty much takeout it seems. Although they have a large space, there is rarely someone eating in that I have seen. We had 2 combo dinners (D1 & D4). Dinners all come with fried rice. First off, they weren't providing in the bag utensils, or napkins until I asked. I asked for lots of napkins and the waitress grabbed 2 paper towels. You'll see the issue with this in a second. My dinner had an egg roll, bbq spareribs, and beef teriyaki on a stick. My son's had chicken wings, crab Rangoon, and egg roll. I had asked for lots of duck sauce. I got into the car and the plastic bag had been tied off in knot. They had plastic cups with lids stacked up in the bag precariously with the duck sauce, that tipped as the bag was being opened. One did not have the cover on securely and dumped completely all over the food boxes and the floor of our car. 2 paper towels were like a drop in a bucket as to what we needed to clean up the mess as we were already on turnpike. We'd eaten from here years ago and a remember liking it. The food this time was ok. Best thing was the egg roll. Not greasy, and how a Chinese egg roll should taste. The meat was all underwhelming with no real flavor. Beef was bland with no discernible teriyaki flavor. The pork did not have any crispiness or sticky ah so sauce on it. My son said the crab rangoons were full, but filling had little flavor, as well as the chicken wings. The rice was average tasting because of the lacking in flavor pork, but at least not greasy. This place is rapidly deteriorating. They don't even take your order at your table anymore, you get handed a take out menu and you are told to come back up when you want to order. They've also decided to cut back on the heat, so the place is frigidly cold. I hope the next restaurant at this location is a good one. read more

To some extent, it seems like Chinese takeout restaurants all serve the same appetizers and cook them the same, so I mostly notice when a place does something especially well or poorly. Nothing here stood out for me either good or band. Just okay. You order at the counter and pay (either before or after) and they bring it to you. But most of their business appears to be takeout or delivery. We decided to eat there, but there was no ambiance or other motivator to do it that way again if we were to go back. But we may not go back, as there is another Chinese place in town we liked better. The boneless pork was tough here, but to be fair I find it to be chewy in most places, so it may be others like it fine that way. The chicken wings were fine, as were the crab rangoons. I thought the teriyaki chicken and beef could have been more tender, but again, maybe it is just me...as you may guess, we got the Pu pu Platter for two. I wanted to try the egg drop soup as I saw a picture that showed it had mushrooms and peas in it. And so it did, and it was fine, though the broth seemed thinner than it needed to be, And finally, the egg rolls and the chicken fingers were great So I found this place not nearly as bad as the one-star reviews here indicate, but not as good as the five-star ratings, If I order there again, I would try a regular meal rather than appetizers. I almost never leave a bad review but this unfortunately needs to be given. We had been eying this restaurant for awhile since we are frequently in the area and decided to finally give it a go as we love Chinese food. The restaurant now has the process where you order at the desk and food will be dropped off to you as they are not staffed for traditional dine in anymore. That part is totally fine, understandable even. The two ladies working at the front desk were very kind. Ordered dumplings and 3 dinners. The dumplings seemed to be served with straight up soy sauce and did not taste freshly made. The actual meals we ordered were horrific. Two were "chicken" and one was "beef" - none of the meat was easily identified. A friend we brought there for dinner said his chicken looked more like fish than anything else and did not taste like normal meat. I tried a bite of my husband's and agreed. It was awful and served Cold (1 plate). I had the beef and it was slightly better but still bad. The broccoli LITERALLY had multiple pieces cooked in that were rotting. I stopped attempting to eat right then and there. After we left, two of us ended up violently sick while shopping and had to head straight home. We will absolutely never go back. read more

I hate to complain and try to be fair. This was very hard to do here. My hubby and I Waliked in to this restaurant, and we had to yell (hello) to place an order. We sat down and noticed food on the rug and chair. It looks like it's been their awhile. The chicken fingers were VERY hard and cut the side of my mouth. The crab Rangoon was filled well but not much flavor and hard as well. I got chicken lo-mein, and the chicken was very badly dried out like Crab Rangoons leather. I couldn't swallow it, so I separated it for my dog. My hubby got szechuan beef, and oh my goodness, the way OVERLOAD of peppers he had to pick so much out . I will NEVER be back to this place. Astonishingly poor quality food. My wife and I bought two meals: Gen. Cho's chicken and another meal with a different name. They both tasted the same. VERY low quality in terms of taste, and appearance. Very doughy and tasteless. While it is not a requirement that Chinese food be created by Chinese people, I really doubt that any Chinese are involved in this food. When we pulled up at the restaurant, there was a large non-Chinese gentl,eman standing outside what would be the kitchen. I give it a single start only because the staff is friendly. To start, the food has no flavor. I ordered the general Tso's chicken and it taste like sugar chicken. No spice to it at all. Literally, not a single pepper flake in site. The chicken was dry, dry, dry and hard to chew. The egg roll that came with my lunch order was not good. I have been here before when we travel up to Newport for the weekend. The food is not spectacular but I have had worse trust me right in Westbrooke, ME. I got chicken chow mein and it was decent. The fried rice needs improvement but one have to understand that for a lunch meal that costs $5.95 and with the amount they give, you cannot beat it! I have had my share of chinese lunches and this is average. Looking at the reviews they are a couple years old so maybe it has gotten better. This is by far the best Chinese resteraunt there is in Newport and bangor!!! They cook wonderfully and it doesn't take very long. Not very expensive and very delicious. Some people who don't like Chinese would obviously hate it but I love Chinese and my favorite is the crab rangoons. read more

This is probably one of the worst Chinese restaurants I've ever been to. This is because their food was awful. The soda was majorly watered down, the porked fried rice could be just white rice. It has no color or flavor at all. The crab Rangoon's are lack luster and all together it just makes for a shitty lunch when you were so prepared for some Chinese. read more

China Way is my all-time favorite chinese restaurant. I love the Lo Mein, Moo Shi and the egg rolls (dunked in duck sauce). They make the best Crab Rangoons. I've never tasted anything like these Rangoons anywhere else. read more

Zero wow bad could it be how can you kill chicken and general Taos the 2 lunch special were barely recognizable. General Tao had one piece of broccoli and the chicken well could not really tell and the color was yellow gold and finally the long hair in my hot spot soup killed it we pain and left !! Chinaway Restaurant one of the worst restaurants I've been to. The service was good but the food was eh had better. My cup of water I got, the bottom of it had black stuff on it like if you leave something out to long thats stays wet it turns black. I rubed the bottom of the cup on my napkin and it left black circles on it. then my tea cup they gave me had, what looked like, yellow chicken sause on it so before the food got there I asked for a plastic silverware. read more

chinaway in newport maine, is very good. I go there alot. The workers are real nice and freiendly, the food is delicious. It made not be to die for, but its still damn good. The service is fast, and they don't rush you wen your almost done. I would reccomend it to anyne looking for chinesse. read more
