The 5 stars is for the old owners and I'll make a separate review for the new ones, but when I ate here this is by far my favorite Chinese place in Texas. The best food, the best service, yes the outside storefront looks a little shady but it's there to hide the amazing flavors and taste. Get the soft shell crab rice if still available. Wow, the last time I ate here was in 2001. You read it right! I rarely come to this part of town as it isn't safe, especially at night. Besides there are so many good options inside the Beltway. Had the Cantonese pan fried crispy noodles, Beijing style pork ribs and fish tofus. Big portions and tasted ok. Didn't care for the fish tofus since they tasted a bit bitter. I had the Hunan Beef Lunch Special for $6.99. It came with fried rice, a small eggroll, and a bowl of Hot Sour soup. The Hot Sour soup was very thick. I thought there were tiny bits of bone. It didn't taste good. The fried rice had no flavor. The rice grains were tiny like they came broken from the bottom of the bag. The eggroll wasn't like any eggroll I'd ever had before. I'm not sure what was inside and I wouldn't say I liked it. The Hunan Beef was the worst part. The beef was thickly coated with a brown caramel sauce that was too sweet. I was expecting some peppery heat because the menu displayed a pepper symbol next to the menu item. There was no heat or spices that I could taste. Even the iced tea was weak. The booth we sat in was torn and ripped. When I sat down, I could feel the springs underneath. All of the booths looked the same way. When the waitress came to the table, she placed 2 forks with paper napkins on the table. I guess she was too tired to separate them for the two of us. This was a horrible visit. This Chinese restaurant has a terrible outside appearance. The parking lot has no lines and rutty, and the exterior is old and in disrepair. Then you walk in and find that the inside is exactly the same way. This restaurant is typical of one from 30-50 years ago - fairly unkempt, nasty restrooms, unpleasant servers, indecipherable bill (written in Chinese) inconsistent with the menu prices, The dining experience is terrible. I felt pressured to order quickly, to eat hastily, and get out. If you have low tolerance for uncleanliness, do not enter the restrooms. I think you walk out of the restroom dirtier than when you walked in. Despite all these negatives, the food is very authentically Cantonese Chinese, which is not common in this city now. The food is well cooked and flavorful. My favorite dishes were the steamed ground pork with salted fish, anything salt and toasted (especially the ribs), the double fried chow mein,, and salted fish chicken fried rice. If you can tolerate the much less than high class dining atmosphere, poor service, and the inaccurate pricing, the food is well worth it. read more

If I knew it was that good, I absolutely would have bought an extra order so that I could have a full order of those super crispy, super yummy beer battered eggplants all to myself! I've been coming here almost 10 years now. The one thing I can say about this place is they are consistent. They don't tweak recipes. The recipe,the portions nothing changed. My waitress remembered my kids when they were little. Food was great. This week I tried the Egg Foo Young with pork very good. We tried their Beijing ribs they were great. I wish they were closer but we make the drive. Call ahead and make sure they are open. One weird day of the week they are closed, I can't remember if it's Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. read more

It's really funny that this place calls itself 'Chinese American'. Quite the opposite of what the name implies, it actually serves pretty authentic Chinese food. You can tell because Chinese people actually eat here! There's salted fish, intestines and century egg - stuff you won't find in a typical Chinese American place. Located in an area that doesn't look all that safe, this place is really the definition of hole-in-the-wall. We would not have come here if we had not found out about it from our Chinese friends. Don't be swindled by their bait and switch tactics. I placed an order online and printed out my order paperwork which included the total for my order, including tax. Upon arrival, I gave them the paperwork I had printed out from my online order. I waited for my credit card to be run for my order. When I received my credit card receipt, I noticed that it was for MORE than the stated amount that I had on my online paperwork. I was told that it was an old menu, and that I had to pay more. I told them that their menu was not my problem and that it's their responsibility to keep it updated. After some arguing, they finally agreed to refund my money. I love this place and so does my little girl, we come here about 1 time a week. The workers are older people which I believe they don't know how to update their prices but their food is good AF. Especially the salt and pepper pork ribs and chicken wings ! I always get their egg-rolls too . Honey walnut shrimp is good too, I ask them to put my sauce on the side so I can dip it instead of it being in the sauce. If you are looking for good authentic chinese on the cheap, then this is the place. This place has been around for at least twenty years and the taste has been pretty consistent. The only reason its not a 4* is that the inside looks pretty run down and not in the best area of town. You are definitely not going for the atmosphere. We ordered 7 dishes, the calamari and soysauce fried chicken were the best. The spare ribs were ok. I would probably skip the crab next time. As far as good home cooking in hole in the wall locations this pretty much describes Chinese American. My family has been going here for generations. It's chock full of Southern Chinese and Cantonese comfort cooking that'll make you feel at home. It's also cheaper than a lot of the other family style places in Chinatown so that's a plus.
