I grew up in this area and always heard people talk about this restaurant and have never tried it before. I was driving around craving something light and affordable for dinner and figured let me try them out. The menu had an array of options and they were all reasonably priced but I decided I'll just get the chicken satay as I didn't need anything too heavy. The lady at the counter that took my order was very nice and had great customer service towards me. It took about 10 minutes for my food to come out and it was pretty decent. This has been my old faithful since I was a kid. This place is always clean. They give huge portions for not a lot of money. The cashier who helped me yesterday was kind and helpful. I got shrimp fried rice, special fried rice and beef and broccoli. The beef was tender and super flavorful. The rice is usually really good! I purchased General Joes from here last Friday, Dec 6th. It came with an egg roll and a ragoon(I might be saying it wrong) that were both tasty and fresh. The food was good and fresh as well. I was enjoying it until I found a long strand of hair wrapped in between the chicken pieces. I am AA and currently have in braids, so it absolutely was not my hair. I reached out online to admonish the business but hadn't received a response as of yet, so im placing it here. This is in no way to discourage other ppl, but I don't feel my concern was acknowledged. Generous portions should not be their tagline! The styrofoam containers already have small sections. They didn't even fill up the main section with the garlic chicken entree. No seasoning or GARLIC in it and sauce was weirdly sweet. General Joe chicken was very dry and batter wasn't good. The picture in the wall had broccoli in it so I verified that it came with. She said most people said they didn't want it so they don't include it anymore. I said I want it, but she acted like she still didn't want to include it. Tried the large fried rice. One with shrimp and the other with pork. As suggested on TikTok, I made sure to add extra eggs , green onions, and I had them prepare the proteins well done. When it was time to eat, I like spice . So I added the chili oil sauce and soy sauce, and I must say that it was good . Next time I will remember to put my leftovers in the refrigerator and not in the microwave because it had a smell to it the next day, but I don't think they had anything to do with the restaurant. Rice bowl never disappoints me. I grew up off of authentic chinese food and this place by far matches the authenticity that I am accustomed to. Olivia, the restaurant manager is very sweet and always accommodating. She's the main reason why I still come here and the food as well too. The General Joe's Chicken is similar to General Tso chicken. I like their version because the flour is not too thick (more meat than flour). The Schezuan Fish is a whole tilapia (deep fried), the sauce does look spicy but not too spicy for me. The Chicken satay is coated with peanut sauce. They all good. Do I recommend this business? Um yeah, like a thousand times. We strictly come here for the Indonesian food, so I cannot speak to the Chinese menu, but what I do know is this place has the best Indonesian food in all of Houston. My wife is from Indonesian and is obsessed with this restaurant. Who can blame her. The rendang is so tender you can cut it with a fork. And don't get me started on the sauce that it's cooked in. OMG. I could eat the sauce with just rice. Actually, I have multiple times. Don't judge me. My next favorite is the Soto Ayam. It's a crispy chicken soup with vermicelli noodles. Soooooooo good. It's like a party in your mouth. We also the love the Empek Empek. And did I forget to mention it's BYOB. What is there not to love about this place. Just make sure to bring your own wine glasses. This place is the only option for Indo food, so no other choice for those like me, who are looking for tastes of home. This place is for Americanized taste or white folks who have tried Indo food, traveled and ate Indo food, and/or don't remember the real good Indo food they've had. BUT for Indonesians like myself who still go home often, and have tasted variations from different islands -- Jawa, Bali, Sumatra, Lombok -- this place doesn't cut it. I decided to give a star for friendly service and one more for effort and OK prices on some items. Taste is just not up to par. That gado gado is missing several key items to be called gado gado. And BTW, the Indonesian gado gado has some raw items, like cucumbers, and some cooked. This place just steamed the whole thing and pour peanut sauce on top!! No wonder some reviewers say they feel this is like a Thai restaurant... The Mie Ayam is positively reviewed by some White people, but again, it's missing main items to be called that. And I've never seen it with coated chicken with sauce like that!! The chicken is supposed to be just white cooked chicken!! The taste is completely off -- this taste like kung pao chicken being soaked in broth.... The Mie goreng taste just like Chinese food places that makes Chow Mein. Mie goreng is supposed to be made with sweet soy sauce, btw. I'm trying to be forgiving because I figured the small operation can't get the authentic ingredients in Houston. This restaurant is about the only place left in Houston where you can get Indonesian food. When you get there, don't be confused. You are indeed at the right place. They don't really advertise the restaurant as an Indonesian restaurant but as a Chinese restaurant instead. Be sure that you ask for the Indonesian food menu because they will not give it to you without you asking for it. The Indonesian food that they offer here are very tasty. They are ALL delicious. My favorite is their beef rendang. So soft, so tasty, so good. I would also get their empek-empek (fish paste in vinegar sauce) and gado-gado (vegetable salad in peanut sauce with some shrimp crackers on top). There's a whole bunch of other food that I would get, but the downside of this place is... they're kind of expensive, and the portions are not very big. If I were to come here with a party of more than four people, we would have to get at least TWO of the beef rendang dishes. They also charge extra for steamed rice =( Another thing about this place; if you're expecting service. Forget about it! I usually just walk up to the cashier, grab a whole bunch of menus, and then wait until someone comes take our order and bring out our waters. You're expecting a refill? Yeah... maybe once every 30-40 minutes or so. They don't really come around to check on you so don't expect anything spectacular. Obviously, my four-star rating is only for the food. In the age of COVID-19, we all have to look deep within to find the diamonds in the rough. And perhaps now that American Chinese takeout may be becoming a mainstay among people who included, from 30 minutes off and on of people watching as I perused the special menu here, many nurses and essential personnel, more people will be able to look past the ordinary exterior of Rice Bowl and spot the one thing that makes it not a typical American Chinese takeaway: its secret Indonesian menu that once unveiled at your bequest, shows the same logo and restaurant name as before, but with a decidedly unique and special heart. And here I was, able to take my first step into a new culinary world in a time when many people fear their first step outside. My Yelp readers do not know that, ever since I went on Yelp lockdown, I was invited to travel to Jakarta, Indonesia next year as Part 2 of my international volunteering adventures, which also sparked Part 2 of my adventure into a heretofore unknown culinary and linguistic world. My dining companion was forced to cancel last-minute, leaving the prospect of addressing the thin, wizened woman, who I suspected was the Indonesian chef, wearing narrow glasses as she sat to dine near a colorful fish tank, in my still fragmented Indonesian to be less of a moment of glorious "aha!", but a frightening "aaaaaaahhhh!!!" I timidly sat at the table directly behind her and watched her get up and return to the kitchen as I perused the concise Indonesian menu selection and watched people walking in every minute to pick up or place orders for boxes of Styrofoam that do and do not contain Chinese food until they are opened (and probably don't actually have a dead cat inside - and also do). It took 20 minutes for me to finally narrow down an epic trifecta of a gluttonous lunch that needed supplement only by a handful of olives in the morning and a smoothie in the evening. By which time, it took another 10 minutes out of the rapidly ticking clock until I went bowling with my coworkers, and I "spared" no expense in ordering a sum total of $26 worth of Indonesian food, tax, tip, and disposable silverware. The 20-minute wait for the feast was as agonizing as the linguistic anxiety that mounted as the owners of Spring's Wiwas Tempeh walked in, a 4-year-old boy eagerly repeating the word "ikan" (fish) every time he glimpsed the fish tank and attempting to count the migrating school of fish in Indonesian. At some point, I realized trying to come up with the perfect time to butt in and reveal I could understand them was making me look strange, and I watched them staring back at me and just left them alone until my food arrived, helpfully labeled with the name of the dish. Sadly, the photo of my three dishes did not survive, so the "die-fecta" of tasty results is not available for your viewing pleasure. The telur balado, deep-fried eggs coated in sweet sambal and topped with fried shallots, was a simple appetizer that had a deeper, sweeter, and less assertively spicy flavor than my own homemade version. The highlight of the meal was the sambal goreng kentang buncis, a potato and green bean sambal supplemented with potent red chiles, rich coconut milk, and bolstered with stink bean (petai) in an unapologetic middle finger to the Westernization of the primary menu. The potato was creamy and melted beautifully into the coconut sauce, contrasted with the crispness of the beans. The only, but big, miss was the bakmie ayam (chicken with meatball noodle soup). The egg noodles and bok choy were adequate, but the chicken like standard lunch-special sesame chicken and the broth so bland that it would need Lot's wife to lose a dunk tank contest before it would be salty enough. The meatballs were basically no better, biting back like rubber erasers, crying out for the sambal oelek container. I assumed a risk by ordering this dish that seemed unpopular in other reviews, but I acknowledge that the reviews of the Indonesian menu are so inconsistent and span many years, and am willing to accept some misses as I peruse the menu. This, however, was enough of a miss to dock an entire star, maybe even more. I gracefully didn't mention the bakmie at all when I called for the chef and complimented the food, wanting to start off on a good note and injecting a strategic switch from English to Indonesian that eventually got the attention of the family seated behind me, as I was moderately hoping. But I then drove the point home by point-blank telling the little boy in still halting but more confident Indonesian how many fish were actually in the tank, and that I'd be coming to Wiwas Tempeh soon. And at that point, as they digested what may have been the biggest surprise to come their way today, I decided I'd consider this visit a net win. At her grandmotherly insistence, yes, I will come back and try some more dishes - hopefully everything on the menu at some point, before I actually get to compare it to Jakarta. read more

I came here with my Bf and his dad for lunch on a Saturday morning at noon. They weren't that busy until after we ordered our food. A lot more ppl came in for mainly Togo and dine in. Service is very fast a little more of self serve counter order and they bring you water and plates to the table. hidden gem in Alief area Indonesian and Chinese food. Rice bowl II is conveniently located at the first stall of a shopping strip. They offer two varieties of cuisine for you to try, Chinese and Indonesian. I stopped in for lunch on a casual Wednesday and walked up to the front. I walked into the store only to be surprised that they had construction going on for half of the seating area. Apparently they're re-doing their floors. I went around to the other side where I wasn't exactly greeted. I came in and walked straight to the cashier counter and was asked "How can I help you" as if I intruded on them. I wasn't too pleased but I was instructed to take a seat at the nearest table where there was a grease stain on the seat. Regardless, I elected to get the indonesian menu and ordered the Ayam Goreng Kuning. After placing the order, the lady (Who I assume is the owner) asked "Is that it"? I nodded in shame, but whatever. Ayam Goren Kuning, is bested described as Indonesian curry marinaded chicken, deep fried with crispy bits. It was absolutely fantastic to the palate. The crispy bits over rice and hot sauce, hit the spot and the chicken itself has a great crunch with a hint of curry flavor. I thoroughly enjoyed the dish despite it being the only thing i ordered. I think I will have to come back to try the other foods here and I'm eyeing the bakso (meatballs) and beef rendang.
