We just pulled in and hooked up our RV at A Country RV Park and jumped onto Yelp. We found Ching Yen and they confirmed they delivered here so after reading the reviews we ordered. We got the Mongolian Beef and Pork Chop Suey. Both were very good! Delivery was within the time quoted and was packed for travel very well. Ching Yen is a secret little Chinese restaurant on the east side of Bakersfield that has been in business for 30+ years. It is filled with pretty Chinese lanterns, golden dragons and oriental paintings of peonies, etc....and the hand made vegetable roses and green palm swan wings make the meals almost too beautiful to eat. But do eat these masterpieces, because each one is a dish that would challenge a Master Chef. Tea arrived with the menus first....nice touch on a cold rainy day. I ordered the Mandarin Hors D'oeuver Appetizer, Orange Chicken and Mongolian Beef. The Mandarin Hors D'oeuver is a sampler (Pu Pu Platter) of finger food: Spring Rolls, Pot Stickers, Pork Ribs, Foil Chicken, Chicken fingers, and Crab Rangoon presented on a flaming Pu Pu Platter. Very yummy. Then the main course was pushed to our table on a serving cart. On each China dish, a delicacy to tempt even the most discerning palate. Lets just say these meals would have won the Championship on the show "Chopped". I could have licked the Orange Chicken sauce right off the plate. OMG, the best in town by far! The Mongolian Beef was so tender it melted in my mouth with the green onions and seasoning. How did I miss this place all these years....this is truly the year of the Pig. Ching Yen is by far my first choice in Chinese Food. I will have no other. The only complaint I have is the photos do not compare to real life, and that I could not sample everything on the menu. I've passed by this place a handful of times and thought nothing of it because of the area it's in. However, this place was seriously delicious! I was skeptical at first when we walked in. There weren't many people but we were greeted by the nicest man who is the owners son. He sat us right away and provided water. We ordered the Dynasty Dinner for 2 that was $15/each. It started with wonton soup and as soon as it came out my mouth started watering. It was so delicious. My toddler probably would've eaten all the wontons if we let him. So so good. I may be a Bakersfield transplant, but I've been here 15 years and have started to consider this as close to a home town as I'm ever going to get. So how is it that EVERYBODY else in town eats here but has managed to keep this place a secret from me for this long? Well, the cat is sure out of the bag now! Just walking in the front door of Ching Yen is enough to send the more sensitive diners into sensory overload. Epileptics beware. The walls and ceiling are covered with brightly colored designs everywhere you look. ADHD people might have some issues, too, I think; the rest of us have plenty of things to look at to keep us occupied while we wait for the food. I've been eating in Chinese restaurants pretty much all my life, and we always order "family style"; we purchase a number of different dishes that go in the middle of the table and everybody shares. After reading the glowing Yelp reviews of Ching Yen I decided to be brave and try one of the preset meals for a change. My dinner companion and I ordered the number 4 which was around $16 per person for two or more people. Everything was still served family style, but there were a set number of dishes involved. They started us off with a HUGE bowl of sizzling rice soup. I kid you not, this would have been worth the drive across town all by itself. The bowl of broth arrives separately from the plate of rice which is then added - quite dramatically - to the broth. When the rice touches the broth there is a very loud sizzling sound. The sound is probably pure theatrics, but the taste is pure heaven. This is an absolute must have dish if you're eating here. The menu said that there would be an order of potstickers accompanying our meal. What arrived was a plate with a variety of appetizers including potstickers, egg rolls, and little foil triangles with tender spiced chicken. At least, I hope that was chicken ;~) - Just kidding. There were two main dishes - a snow white chicken and prawns Szechuan style. Neither dish was spicy but they were both tasty. The chicken dish had strips of tender white chicken breast with pea pods and a sauce that was smooth and buttery. The prawns were breaded and deep fried in a red sauce. The prawns were tossed with peppers but were not particularly spicy. Everything was served with a generous side of steamed rice and we received both fortune cookies and almond cookies at the end of the meal. This is definitely the best Chinese food I've had in Bakersfield so far. read more

Ching Yens is one of my favorite Chinese places of all time, but I moved away from Bakersfield twenty years ago, and hadn't been there since. It seems to me that we tend to idealize a lot of the youthful memories of our favorite places, especially restaurants. When we go back, they very often do not live up to what we remember. On a recent trip to Bakersfield, that definitely was NOT the case at Ching Yen . After twenty years, this place is almost exactly as I remember it; right down to Sue, the owner, as our very attentive waitress. Keep in mind this is not fine dining. The restaurant is not very fancy, the asian decoration is cool but kitschy, and the atmosphere much more geared towards a family dining experience. That being said, the food is excellent and very reasonably priced. We started with the Won Ton soup, which is chock full of veggies and meat.. My companion said she would come here just for the soup. My recollection is that the Sizzling Rice soup was just as good. The egg rolls are adequate, but still better than what I typically get in Texas. An order of Chicken Fried Rice was pretty good, though maybe a bit salty. In the past, the best entrees here were typically those that stray a little from the Chinese food norm, and I remember that I usually avoided the battered and fried offerings, though I don't remember any that were particularly off-putting. On this visit, we ordered the Pork and Eggplant, the Tomato Beef, and the more traditional Chicken and Broccoli. All were excellent, in particular, the Tomato Beef. After the meal, we rolled out of there with full bellies, plenty of money still in the wallet, and a bunch of tasty leftovers in cartons for my companion to share with her family. I realized this is still one of my favorite Chinese restaurants. The food is still top-notch, easily surpassing most of the places I frequent in Houston and elsewhere. I suppose you may occasionally find better at an expensive fine dining Asian restaurant, but you will not find better for the price. BTW- I know they use MSG at Ching Yen. I do occasionally have a bad reaction to it, particularly if used excessively (like at the otherwise excellent 5-Star near U of Houston). But on this visit and on my hundreds (yes hundreds) of visits in the late eighties I never had a reaction from Ching Yen. Maybe just lucky. read more

Yelpers are correct; if you're going to dine here order the sizzling rice soup! It's so delicious with the crispy rice, yummy broth, and seafood. It's also loaded with water chestnuts which are in lots of other dishes too and I have a new developed love for. The soup will warm you up! We usually go for dinner but they have some really great well-priced lunch specials. They also have some yummy appetizers including pot stickers and some of the best fried shrimp in town. OMG How have I never discovered this little gem of a Chinese restaurant before? Tried it a few weeks ago because my mom was dogsitting for a friend so I met her for dinner on that side of town...and I was amazed. As many Yelpers have said, the sizzling rice soup is great! My only complaint though is that they added the rice to the soup before they bought it out instead of at the table like I've had before so it was half soggy by the second bowl...but it still tasted fantastic. So much seafood in it! We also got the crab wontons, which were very good, and the honey walnut shrimp, also good...but the show-stealer was the eggplant with pork. I think it was the best eggplant in garlic sauce I've had in town, if not ever!! It was truly delicious. The only complaint I have with this place is the location, but it can't be helped b/c this place has apparently been there for a looooong time...It's funny because a few blocks up the houses are super nice, the neighborhood looks fine...then suddenly its not so fine. Also, I live in the SW so it's a bit of a drive across town, so if I'm not in Northeast Bakersfield I probably won't eat here often. Guess that's why I never found it before lol. My buddy and I ate here last Thursday and were the only people other than the employees in the restaurant for lunch when we arrived. That was a little concerning to us, but we stayed because we had both been there before (even though it had been years prior) and knew it would be at least okay. We ordered two lunch specials and an order of gyoza. They first served us their egg flower soup and it was dynamite. It had crab meat (perhaps it was imitation crab) and tasted great. Then they served us the gyoza and I think that those may have been the best I've ever eaten. Then our entrees came. The presentation wasn't amazing, but the food was very good. When first moving to Bakersfield 10 years ago my dad and I set out on finding a good Chinese resturant and after quite a few bad ones we found Ching Yen. I turned my husband on to this resturant and it's one of few Chinese places he actually enjoys. Sizzling rice soup, pork chow mien, fried rice....all of it yummy! They have great lunch meals and are pretty quick to arrive. The building is unsuspecting on a more residential street. We passed and thought they were closed. But we checked and sure enough - they were open - and happy to feed us! The four star rating is relative to the other Chinese restaurants in Bakersfield. It's not authentic Szechuan cuisine as the category implies however, the dishes are well made and fairly priced. The standout dish is the sizzling rice soup. It's loaded with seafood, flavor, and carbs. If you try only one dish here, make it this one. The rest of their menu offerings - fried rice, stir fried meat and veggies, and lunch specials are standard and palatable. The decor is f-ugly, dated, and needs to be cleaned up. I don't mind the over the top theme; it's just in poor condition. Lose the wood panels, add a fresh coat of paint, re-string the tassels on those silly lanterns, and wipe the caked on grease off the paintings. It'll look waaay better after that. read more

Visited my friend from college whose family runs this restaurant and, from a non-biased perspective, the food was superb. I live too far to come here regularly but it's one of those places you crave after leaving. My friend's mom served up an array of small portions so I could try their best dishes. The cream cheese wontons were absolutely delicious, as well as the sizzling rice soup (one of their most popular dishes, I am told). There are many regulars who come here at lunch. The place is rather small, but during the 3 days I was out in Bakersfield, it was always packed come lunch time. Still, there is ample parking in the back and in the front (if you feel like parallel parking). I'd recommend this place to anyone who ventures out to God forsaken Bakersfield. =) read more

Driving home from Las Vegas, i saw good rating on yelp so stopped by for dinner. We ordered San shan soup, sizzling three ingredients(?), mongolian lamb, prawns of szechuan and fried rice. I forgot the exact names. I especially liked the soup and fried rice. (Rice was fluffy and had good texture) Mongolian lamb did not look like the usual mongolian beef i used to see in other restaurants. We talked with the owner lady and learned that she used to own a famous Chinese restaurant in Korea (now owned by her brother). So basically every time we are in town we come here with the folks. But this time around I finally had it! This place has very delicious food but the only reason I have to give it a one star is because the owners are always arguing very loud in mandarin. When we got the Ching Yen that night we went to wash my daughters hands and as we were walking towards the restrooms we could hear the owners arguing. This is not the first time by the way! It's all the time we come. Idk what's the problem but they need to keep it down or take it outside its very rude how there's customers in the dinning area and you just hear them yelling back and forth. Then the owners wife comes out serving us as if it's our fault that's she's gotten into an argument with her husband. Practically throwing the dishes on our table and looking irritated. But that night we were there their son was helping out in the front and he was talking about to some customers about how things aren't cooked right and other stuff that is to much to write. He needs to be careful what her says up front there's others customers listening especially because he was being loud. I really hope that there arguing doesn't scare off there customers because in the long run there won't be a Chin Yen sadly. It was delicious!! The owners are the nicest people I think I've ever met. Mr. Owner was so sweet... showing us all his awards and making us feel like we were old friends of his family.
