I read the reviews before I went. There were some mixed. Both good and bad. So I thought I would try this little place for myself. Scott, the owner, was my server, his wife, the cook. Did not get to meet her, she was to busy, but Scott was awesome. Great sense of humor and very attentive. He knew everyone that walked in the door, except me of course. My first time there, but not my last. The atmosphere was friendly and casual. Had egg rolls, and the China Cuisine meal. The China Cuisine has, Sweet and Sour Chicken Chunks, BBQ Ribs, Fried Shrimp, Fried Rice and Cantonese Chop Suey. Extremely good. I highly recommend this place in Shafter California. read more

China Cuisine is such a homey, welcoming restaurant. We were greeted as soon as we walked in, and the owner and his family are truly wonderful... kind, attentive, and genuinely happy to have you there. We came in with a semi-large party and still received amazing service from start to finish. Several of us ordered the rib eye steak with baked potatoes, and it was cooked perfectly, tender, flavorful, and clearly prepared to order. Other dishes included the orange chicken, which was absolutely to die for with its tender chicken and delicious orange flavor. We also ordered sweet and sour pork, Cantonese noodles, pork fried rice, shrimp chow mein, and even a hamburger. Every single dish was fresh, hot, and delicious. The portions are very generous, easily large enough for two people to share. The salad bar was another highlight: fresh, tasty, and stocked with plenty of topping options. Lunch buffet was really good. Green beans, chow mein noodle, egg roll, rice, beef & broccoli, Kung pow chicken, sweet & sour chicken (or pork), bbq ribs. It was delicious & fresh. We've been wanting to try china cuisine for a long time after reading all the reviews online. I picked up my grandson from school and we went for an early dinner. We got there too early for the buffet. I was craving old style chow mein with crunchy noodles which I knew was on their menu. My grandson ordered the orange chicken which comes with rice. The sauce and crispiness was wonderful. He loved the first couple of bites. But afterwards said he was having a little bit of an aftertaste, he said it wasn't bad. But he liked it, and it was a nice large serving, not greasy, nice and crispy and the sauce was very good. They gave him a very small bowl of steamed rice to go with his orange chicken. I ordered one of the individual dinners that had chow mein, fried rice and sweet and sour pork. The chow mein was delicious. Just what I was craving. The fried rice was mushy. The sweet and sour pork had a very tasty sauce on it and was nice and crispy, but the meat was very tough and dry. I didn't eat the sweet and sour pork or the fried rice. I had enough chow mein left over to take home for later. They don't serve soup before the dinner or include an egg roll, like many other chinese restaurants do. They also add a 3.50% charge if you use a card to pay. The booths were comfortable and they have plenty of seating. I would like to go back and try the ribeye steak which everybody raves about but the next time, for chinese food, I'll stay local. read more

The best for rib eyes here in the valley. Posted on Facebook our last time there and got over 156 likes, so with that said, they are the best! The Chinese food is very very good, buffet on Fridays. Food had no flavor and was burnt and dry. Waited for fresh food to come out from the buffet but nope nothing changed. Last night, my husband and I had dinner for the first time at the China cuisine in Shafter. We shared a very large ribeye steak. That was absolutely delicious ! It came with salad and a baked potato which we shared also. We also had fried shrimp for an appetizer. It was extremely fresh and very good. Now I had read in the reviews how friendly and atmosphere this place has and they weren't kidding. It felt like we were having a family dinner with old friends. The service was great. The food was great. The owner as stated in many reviews was wonderful. I think we found a new hangout we live in Bakersfield, but this is definitely worth the drive. read more

Fork tender ribeye steak , baked potato with everything , soup or salad , chunk o garlic bread , absolutely none better than, period. Chinese food is Cantonese , LARGE portions made to order , like Rice Bowl in the 60's , either way , your leaving with left overs and stuffed , the chinese food even is better the next day , flavorful , fantastic. Have not had the pork chops or a giant hamburger , ot the patty melt yet , but there fate is near. You cant beat the service , she is top shelf , and again the made to order in worth the trip , large seating areas , almost next to city hall in shafter , parking is a little tight , but do able , try it , you will never have a steak in Bakersfield again. Wonderful local spot well worth the drive from Bakersfield. Established in 1989. Survived a fire in 2005. Came back serving all their best dishes, and still going today. Spacious open dining room, with touches of Chinese decor. The owner is so kind. Always welcoming and friendly, bantering with all the locals. Service with a smile and a laugh here and there. The food is always spot on. Their not so secret specialty is a nice big juicy ribeye. Cooked to order served with your choice of side, a salad bar and toasted bread. Seasoning delicious served on a hot plate. Tender and juicy. My E dinner had so much food. Sweet and sour pork always a favorite, with ribs, fried shrimp, Chow mein and fried rice. The food was not the best, I guess if you have no one where else to go it's okay. The individual there was kinda rude and blew us off. I asked if I can get chow mein with a meal I wanted he said "we don't do that" in a stern voice, didn't give me any other option or mention if me getting it on the side was an option even if I paid extra. It gave off the vibe that he was doing me a favor when I am paying for the food/service. We had also asked for a side of hot sauce and he said "we don't have any" and basically walked away. Service overall sucked, there was another group there and he was constantly asking nicely if everything was okay etc but with our group was rude from the start. The food was definitely not good enough for the attitude. It was the first and last time going there. I'd rather take the drive to Bakersfield or even settle for panda. read more

Yep, we ordered steak at a Chinese restaurant. I read on Facebook BAKERSFIELD LOCAL RESTAURANT GROUP someone asked "Where would you go for a nice steak dinner?" Among other restaurants mentioned, China Cuisine at 563 James Street in Shafter came up quite frequently. Since I've never been to China Cuisine, I gave them a call to see whether their steak dinners were available for lunch. Yes, we could order steak anytime of the day. The ribeye steak was so tender, flavorful, and juicy. The wait staff was friendly and gave great service. The meal came with salad bar, choice of potatoes [I chose baked potato], or rice or rice pilaf, plus toasted French bread. Yes, I agree China Cuisine serves some of the best steaks in Kern County. I am looking forward to trying some of their other dishes. However, it is hard not to think of their delicious steaks and their prices were so reasonable. read more

Went there today (10/20/23) for the buffet and was so disappointed. I had everything they offered at the buffet and it was just not great in taste. Just to list a few things, the chow mein and fried rice was lacking and the sweet and sour sauce was freezing cold which turned me off completely. I only went for one plate and could not finish it. The service was ok. Server greeted me and came by and asked if I was doing okay a few times. The overall vibe of the restaurant was ok. I think it kind of looked cluttered but I'll leave it at that. I don't understand why the focus is on American lunch and dinner items at a Chinese restaurant? If I want a Ribeye or New York steak I can go to a steak house. French dip or diner style breakfast and lunches there are other places I think of than a Cantonese restaurant. I went by around 3:30 on a Wednesday and it was pretty busy considering the time. I decided to splurge and get the meal, which was really unnecessary. When I ordered the sweet and sour chicken they said 'A side or the dinner?' which made me think a side was a small portion of food, but it would have been plenty. I like that they offer Sriracha sauce without even being asked. The food overall was pretty underwhelming. I wanted to like it. They seemed like nice folks, but I just wasn't feeling it. Came here last week and the place was like an oven inside. No A/C just fans circulating hot air. Then the female employee seemed overwhelmed and rude. No greeting upon entering and just starring at us while on the phone then when she hung up she seemed like she was in a hurry taking our order like she had somewhere to go. Hence no one else was inside ordering and the place is closed for dine in. Looking at the menu i ordered the sweet and sour pork with chow mein. The chow mein was good but the pork was not. My all time favorite restaurant closed a few years ago and this pass December I found out a family member of the owners has a place in Shafter, so I made the trip and found a piece of my childhood again. The sweet and sour it just amazing the sauce isn't water downed like it is everywhere else. The fried rice and chow mein are spot on. The paper wrap chicken is delicious. My son just loved the beef and broccoli. If you looking for some great food and friendly service you should give this place a try.
