Typical Cantonese Chinese food. It never disappoints. Sizzling Rice Soup is the star!

We found this place on yelp, wanting to try a new Chinese restaurant. It was a little hard to find and from the outside looked like somewhere I would turn back and search for a new restaurant but we have it a shot. Walked in and it was uncomfortably quiet. It is decorated very authentic and looks like in its hey day was a great vibe! I really wanted to leave but didn't want to seem rude to the little old lady running the place. She was oddly rude and sweet at the same time if that makes sense. I flipped through the menu and landed on the black pepper beef and wife ordered won ton soup! We both joked about wanting to leave but didn't want to be rude! As waited it started he crowded and that put us at ease about the food not being as bad as it seemed it might be. The waitress brought the food out and I was amazed!! So glad we didn't leave!! That was some of the best Chinese food I've ever had and I've had it all over the world. The won ton soup was so flavorful and clean, just an absolute delight! The black pepper beef was to die for!! The beef so soft and flavorful and the bell peppers cooked but still a little crunchy and and the whole dish had this amazing hunt of fresh garlic! What a treat! If you can get past the location and the outdated ambience this is a must try! Honestly top 3 if not 1 Chinese food I've ever had!!!! We were craving authentic Chinese food last night and came across Ching Yen. You can tell the owner, Sue, takes great pride in her food, and it really shows. We started with the Sizzle Rice soup and Hot and Sour soup. Both soups were rich and delicious with fresh ingredients. We ordered the small bowls and each was big enough for two people to share one and have extra. We decided to try the Combination Appetizer platter which came with two of each appetizer and two dipping sauces. The Sizzling Beef Iron plate and Chicken Fried Rice had quality fresh ingredients. You could tell the pride that went into each dish. Sue was a delight and expressed how much she enjoyed her customers. She made it feel like you're visiting family for a home cooked meal. Su is a beautiful Chinese Lady. She is now old. I was surprised at seeing her pictures when she was young just 20 years ago! She looked only in her 30's at most! She could easily have been a Chinese Super Model. What interests me the most is her knowledge of Chinese History and knowledge of Chinese American History as well. You see my Chinese American Grandfather was born in the USA in 1905. My Great Grandfather was born in the USA in 1867. I was born in the USA in 1969. I am 5th generation Chinese American? My Grandfather fought in WWII as a CBI FLYING TIGER AVG Pilot and Engineer in 1938 that after 1941 became the 14th US Army Air Force Flying Tigers. NOT to be confused with the 1st AVG aka The CBI FLYING TIGERS AVG (ALL VOLUNTEER GROUP) of 1938! My Gandfather was a Lt. Col., but because of racism 300 US born US Army Officers of Chinese ethnicity were removed from History. Non received VA benefits. A stain of Honor and I can not hold the US Military to the Standards I once thought they were. The Food is as authentic as Su. She & her Husband cooks the Ancient Ways. She is completely Chinese, as is the decor. There is No One in Bakersfield like her or cooks the way they cook. I suggest any visitors come before she passes away. She is the TAO. She IS CHINESE and a rare beautiful Enchanting woman even for her age! The FOOD is Par Excellent. I am now 57 years old and Chinese American from SFO. This is a great place for freshly made Chinese food. The flavors are fresh and you taste the effort that goes into creating the dishes. They are always willing to make something the way you like it....our son hates vegetables so we always order chicken chow mein with no vegetables. This a great family owned Chinese restaurant. It's in the ghetto and it is not fancy at all, but the food is flavorful, the portions are good, and prices are fair. Everything we ordered came out hot, fresh, and fast. I asked for my Kung Pao spicy and they delivered. My wife and were both pleased and we'd drive across town for it again. The owner was so incredibly nice & patient with us, I had no idea about the closing time so I arrived at 8:15 (closing time is 8:30) and yet he greeted us with a smile and seated us immediately. He brought us our hot tea and water, never rushed us to order and gave us options for our choice of food. The food itself was great we ordered the sizzling hot soup with crispy chow mien and white pea beef. The restaurant was very cute and traditional it almost reminded me of what you see in movies when they go to Chinese take out restaurants. The owner seems to be doing it all himself which is pretty admirable and deserves more recognition than what some reviews have shown. read more

I think the last time I have visited this place was over 20yrs ago and I remember this place being better than what I had recently encountered. I remember coming here with my mom for lunch several times as a kid and loving it, but on my recent visit the food was not what I had remembered it to be. We ordered tons of food and spent a lot since all 4 of us were super hungry that day. I remember I kept apologizing to my husband and kids for picking out the restaurant for that evening. Going in I expected the food to be fantastic and maybe that's where it went downhill from there. I was expecting it to be similar to other Chinese restaurants in town and I believe that the restaurant is older and a little outdated. What I mean by that is that, they are catering to a lot of customers that have been loyal to them for years and they haven't added that pizazz that the newer restaurants have. I think the cute little decorative flowers and swans that they make out of the foods is really creative and that is actually cool, but the food to me was just not what I expected. Then when it got to the entrees the food was just okay. My kids usually LOVE Chinese food and we definitely always have a lot of leftovers, but they did not really get seconds. The food is not horrible, but the food is not stupendous either. I'm happy I went back to revisit my memories with my mom for lunch; however, I was not impressed with the food and I do not see myself coming back. I did notice the owner talking to people and welcoming them back, so they do have a lot of loyal customers which is nice. She seemed really nice and talked to us for a little while, and every time we go out for dinner, my youngest son always wants to take a trip to the restroom, but my husband walked in and walked right back out and told my son that he needs to hold it til we get home because it was not pretty. I got there 5 minute before closing and they still took my order and not just that the food was made fresh! No fast food here I can tell you that! Craving Chinese! We had delivery. The delivery was quick but the food really sucked. The hot and sour soup had shrimp, fake crab, I didn't ask for a seafood soup! It was horrible. The egg rolls where fried in old oil which you could smell when we opened the box!the pork ribs were all dried out I can't believe they would serve this stuff. We had the sweet and sour chicken and it was very tasty, meat tender, and color beautiful! The chicken chow mein was so tasty and plentiful. I loved the flavor and it was something you don't get at other places. The broccoli beef was rich in color and savory! The atmosphere is very artistic and the owners very nice. 1. There was a squished bug and dry dead bugs on our table and when we moved the owner insisted that we still sit in that table with the bugs because it was "better." 2. I was pouring soy sauce on my steamed rice and she comes up to me, takes the fork from my hand, and mixes the rice with the other food and tries to tell me how to eat it. She finishes by telling me not to use soy sauce because it has a lot of sodium. I would not recommend eating here because of lack of cleanliness due to bugs on the table. Lack of care for the bugs on the table. And lack of courtesy for taking a customers fork and mixing their food. There's way better places to eat, don't waste your time coming here. read more
