I have lived in Canton for most of my life, but after meeting my husband he introduced me to the Redford area. Chin's was about 5 minutes away from his home and he absolutely adores it. He always gets the almond chicken combination dinner with white rice and sweet and sour sauce instead of gravy. He has always loved it. I have only been a handful of times and have gotten the shrimp and chicken. I have not been the biggest fan myself as I do feel it could be cooked a bit more. Their rice also leaves something to desire. It doesn't always seem completely mixed. The times I have been they have had their dining area closed due to COVID- I am not sure if that has re-opened at this time. It seems like a neat place to hang out and I've heard great things about the interior. The people who work here are awesome and are always nice and welcoming. I appreciate that! Genuinely I have enjoyed their food, but the consistency isn't always there. I haven't been in a minute, but hope to revisit soon to update this review. You guys have a good place going. read more

My husband and I both worked late and we both wanted Chinese and try something new, so he remembered driving by Chin's so we headed that way, ready to have a seat and enjoy our date night out at a restaurant. Well, soon as we walked in, they had a large hand written notice stating pick up orders only no dining. Time was already late and we didn't want to drive another 10 to 15 minutes to go somewhere else so we waiting the 20 minutes to get our food. I ordered the sweet and sour shrimp and he ordered the shrimp and lobster sauce. Mine was really good and his meal he said was just ok. The shrimp and lobster sauce looked more like brown gravy and he did not like the flavor. So I know he was a bit disappointed, my meal was great, the fried shrimp was perfect and so was the rice, I added my own garlic butter and made it perfect. read more

I grew up across the street from chins and I moved and lived in many places and still haven't found a place as good as chins. I traveled from Florida Texas and California just to come eat chins! I was so excited to find that Chins was the old Chin Tiki! We used to dine there when I was 5yo and now I am.... Vintage. Lmbo I live so far away and hate to eat in the car. Wish I could dine inside. Was meeting a friend of mine for lunch one day and, since he's a cocktail aficionado, he wanted to meet at Chin's since it was halfway between our houses and also a legendary tiki bar in the area. Alas the whole experience was just "OK." Despite being noteworthy as "the original" tiki bar in Detroit the drinks were underwhelming. Mine was just basically Hawaiian fruit punch and rum served in a plastic cup. Nothing interesting or noteworthy in their cocktail program. Food was ok. I ordered the Mongolian beef and we split a few appetizers like crab rangoon and some potstickers. Nothing particularly stood out or was memorable. I suppose if you grew up going here you'll love it (as I acknowledge that the Chinese place I grew up going to is not great but I love it because it reminds me of being a kid) but for a newbie I wasn't all that wowed. I wish I could give rate it higher, but unless you are a tiki aficionado, it is not a good place to dine. The manager was very pleasant, especially after having to deal with a very surly server. From a dining perspective, that was the highlight. I know this isn't a tiki bar, but it does have tiki history so you would think they may want to at least attempt to make a somewhat authentic tiki drink, but nope; they just dump rum into juice and call it a mai tai, or whatever. I posted pick of their tiki drink menu. They also didn't have Tsingtao beer, and got the distinct impression they haven't had it in a very long time. How about just take it off the table tent menu. For the food... well here goes nothing. The hot and sour soup tasted weakly of beef and vinegar, then thickened with way too much cornstarch and then a few lumps of tofu thrown in for texture. The egg roll was the shining star of my meal, and it was average. Not a lot of flavor and really way too thick. Two thinner ones would have been easier to eat and would have used the same number of wonton wrappers, as the cook used at least two on mine to hold it all together. The hot mustard was HOT! So pungent I could only use a bit at a time. I had some sort of pork cellophane noodle dish. I don't speak Chinese so I don't know if their dish names were some sort of dialect or a different interpretation of the Chinese dish names everyone knows. In any case, this was a congealed mass of mush with no flavor at all. Even though I couldn't, or more accurately, didn't want to finish anything, I wasn't asked if I wanted a to go box. So I read that this place was the place to go so I ordered some Mongolian beef and was very disappointed. What I got some some mushy food that does not look anything like a Mongolian beef. Ok I driven by this spot for a few yrs. First impression not good, business is open but looks closed. Anyway, went inside and there is an immediate smell of mold and funky old smell.like the place has never been cleaned properly. Like an old house, that is never a good sign for me. Looked at menu, standard asian fair, prices were In normal range. I didn't have a good feeling so I ended up not ordering anything. This place is really cool inside. Definitely a very nostalgic, classic Chinese restaurant feel. I came with a coworker for lunch. We have worked across the street for over a year and finally decided to give it a try after seeing good reviews here. Let me start by saying their lunch specials are a great deal, and they're delicious. They cme with soup, entree , rice, and egg roll. I had the Kung pao chicken which was very flavorful. My coworker had general Tso, which was interesting because it came with umbreaded chicken. Other than that observation, there were no complaints. If you're in the mood to bask in pure crazy kitschified tiki goodness 1950's style, this is THE only authentic place I know of left in this area besides Chin Tiki, their former sister restaurant downtown, sitting vacant and in darkness when it's not being used in Eminem flicks. Though much smaller, Chin's is fabulous and COVERED in tikification from the stone figures outside to the lights-in-pufferfish fixtures to, well, everything. Tasted like something out of a microwave box from the grocery store. Ordered Sesame Chicken with fried rice and an order of vegetable Chow Mein. They said 15 mins & I showed up after 10. Food wasn't even hot somehow. For the same price I paid I could have gotten Ichiban take out or any higher quality Chinese food meal. I am completely confused on the other reviews as they all claim this is some of the best Chinese food ever. I disagree whole-heartedly. Finally went with a friend after passing this place for years and saying we should check it out. Well he got the Schezwan chicken, and it was very bland. No heat or spice to it, the sauce was a very watery. The only vegetables in the sauce were julienne-style carrots and pea pods. I had ordered the General Tso chicken, and I am saddened by how tasteless it was. Once again, no spice, no heat, and the sauce was very watered down and had a strong vinegar aftertaste. The fried rice was super buttery, was not too appealing to the stomach. Major complaint: no flavor and no spice! This place left my tastebuds in an angry uproar. Not a single red pepper, chili pepper; just your basic cracked black pepper and salt. I have had $2 microwave Chinese dinners that knocked my socks off, I would have expected $10 dinners to do the same, if not more. read more

Mammasan has been in business over 50 years and makes the good food I grew up eating, not the healthiest but the tastiest. The only original tiki bar in Detroit from the tiki hay day. Drinks were good, food was good, and service was great. Marlon was awesome to meet and very knowledgeable about tiki culture. He was awesome to talk to. Super fun to talk with. They sell some of the original chin tiki glasses. Mutiny doesn't sell any glasses, so we were glad we went to Chin's! I first found China's when I was 6 years old I grew up right across the street. Scraping up $5.50 use to get me the lunch special and I could walk anytime I wanted. Interesting dining experience- We arrived around 5 pm on NYE and we were the only ones there- the Asian older man didn't really even acknowledge us-not a hello- happy NY... we asked to sit and he pointed to the rightbrought us our menus but we had to ask him if we could get drinks- we had to indicate to him that we were ready to order- 20 minutes in and we still are the only ones we're beginning to think this is hilarious as we purposely didn't go to our usual Chinese NYE place because it's always packed and the food isn't as good on a holiday - Our Rangoon is placed along with some very very watery dipping sauce-the Rangoons were hot on outside but weirdly cold on the inside... now a waitress has appeared and another couple the waitress stops by to ask us about our Rangoon and drinks- then says " I would have made them better" which made me wonder if the elderly man made them alcohol free- The hot sour soup was perfect! After watching "The Search for General Tso" on Netflix, I went on a search of my own. For an old school Chinese place I remember from childhood- Chin's. Chin's is exactly the kind of chinese food place described in the film. The menu is full of 'chinese food' choices that would appeal to timid American palates in the early to mid 20th century, after many Chinese in California, who were treated very poorly (by Americans there who likened them to nothing more than aliens from another planet) decided to relocate all over the country in small towns where they might have a better life. We both got classic not-even-remotely chinese lunches: me- Almond Boneless Chicken (AKA 'ABC') and other half Steve- Chicken Chop Suey. Chop Suey was the dish a long, long time ago that was invented by enterprising chinese restaurant owners to appeal to American diners, who were otherwise afraid of what they might actually see hanging in the kitchen! ABC, is, well, batter fried sliced chicken breast with gravy and a little sprinkling of almond dust. And brown gravy! Nothing chinese about it. But it's delicious and if you really want an authentic, 1950's style "chinese" food experience, these are the kinds of dishes you get! My 5 stars are for the authentic mid-century experience, including its time capsule interior- a full-on Tiki bar experience, complete with waterfall (does not work but it is there), Tiki gods, authentic looking decor and rug that looks (and sadly, smells) like it's been here this whole time. What drinks have been spilled on this carpet...if it could only talk. It does look like a place from another time, when local Mad Men era businessmen, race track execs and horse owners (the Detroit Race Course/DRC was right around the corner) and pilots and stewardesses from Metro Airport would come and drink fruity boat drinks and smoke up a storm and listen to island music and dream. You still can! At Chin's! ****Chin's is one of only a tiny handful of businesses (on the strip of Livonia on Plymouth between Inkster and Farmington Rds) still standing from my memories of visiting Grandma and Grandpa in Livonia as a kid in the 70's, it has an iconic retro sign we drove past over and over again. 'Why didn't Grandpa ever get dinner THERE?' I wondered. Perhaps he would have enjoyed a few too may tropical tiki drinks, looking back! Do you like bean sprouts? LOVE bean sprouts? Then Chin's is your place because that's all that was in the eggrolls that came with our meal, which gave them an odd chewy/crunch texture. My mom had the Chop Suey and she said it was also oddly full of bean sprouts and not many other veggies. I'm a lover of crispy orange beef, so I ordered the orange beef (which is not crispy at Chin's), but there wasn't anything orangey about it until my fork scraped the plate. My meal tasted good, but it wasn't what I was expecting or hoping for. Neither of us were blown away by the food. Our server was nice and the service was prompt. Prices are fair. This is my go-to place. I've tried others and am always disappointed so even though I moved away, I still drive here to eat-in or get takeout. Their egg rolls are perfect. I don't know why so many restaurant's egg rolls are just full of cabbage and nothing else nowadays, but Chin's does it right. Their sweet and sour chicken has carrots, pineapples and peppers in the sauce, just how I like. Their breading is soft. Every place I've tried has rock-hard breading. Not Chin's. We have been coming here for YEARS! The decor has not changed and neither has the food.....consistently fabulous. The egg rolls are as large as the tikis outside welcoming you in. They have the perfect amount of bean sprouts, waaaaayyyy better than cabbage! The Cantonese fried shrimp is jumbo in size with light and fluffy breading. As a matter of fact, all breading on all the dishes are light and fluffy.....yummmmmm. Splash on the sweet and sour sauce and now you're stomach is smiling! Chin's is a consistently good place that serves up the basics. They're fast, friendly and affordable, with great lunch specials. Another nice little bonus: they make their egg rolls with bean sprouts, not cabbage. The only thing that's so-so (that I've had) is the fried rice... There's just not much to it, so I would go with the white. This has to be my favorite place to get Chinese food! The prices are decent and definitely worth it for the amount of food you get. The almond chicken and the General Tso's are good and the wonton soup and egg rolls are awesome! Not a big fan of the gravy that comes with the almond chicken, they give you a pint (way too much) and it congeals very fast. The place is very much a hole in the wall eatery and is very funky. The best way I could describe it is "Hawaii if it was always nighttime"... It's pretty interesting and definitely unique. I normally carry-out and the service is normally fast. Only complaint is that the staff can be kind of curt oftentimes. They have been hiring new people however and their new waitstaff are far more friendly. read more

Man I love this place. Where else can you sit under a blowfish and drink a flaming drink named the volcano? Chins! Do you know how crazy popular this place would be if it was somewhere trendy like downtown Ann Arbor or Royal Oak. It'd be nuts. If you like your egg roll with bean sprouts instead of cabbage, and a light more tart duck sauce than the thick gelatinous stuff that comes in tiny plastic packets, you can get that at Chin's! I've been visiting Chin's for just about 10 years now. They have excellent quality food and great prices. Over the years, the service has been iffy here and again but not so much as to take a star away. I'd say in 10 years I've probably had under 5 visits where I thought "What's his/her problem?" about a servers attitude.
