Was meeting a friend of mine for lunch one day and, since he's a cocktail aficionado, he wanted to meet at Chin's since it was halfway between our houses and also a legendary tiki bar in the area. Alas the whole experience was just "OK." Despite being noteworthy as "the original" tiki bar in Detroit the drinks were underwhelming. Mine was just basically Hawaiian fruit punch and rum served in a plastic cup. Nothing interesting or noteworthy in their cocktail program. Food was ok. I ordered the Mongolian beef and we split a few appetizers like crab rangoon and some potstickers. Nothing particularly stood out or was memorable. I suppose if you grew up going here you'll love it (as I acknowledge that the Chinese place I grew up going to is not great but I love it because it reminds me of being a kid) but for a newbie I wasn't all that wowed. The space is pretty fun tho. The decor is definitely a great throwback with tons of lights and things to look at.

Upon returning, I want to sit in his section, please! The hostess greeter and staff all were very nice. The menu choices are abundant here but I had to go for a boil watching the steaming stacks of inflated bags going to other tables. The boil options are vast and range from $16 to $121 depending on what floats your boat. I decided on the Shrimp 1/2 pound boil with garlic butter sauce, mild spice, corn-on-the cob and (2) potatoes. In opening the bag and releasing the steam, was the beginning of a true dining experience. This is why you need the apron and plastic gloves they provide.

They don't take reservations but don't me that 6:30 on a Saturday evening wasn't that busy. It was a very small turn out for our group. I got there early and they were able to seat me in sight of the door. While the boils are higher priced, the baskets and po boys are reasonable. I got the shrimp with sweet potato fries and a appetizer of hush puppies. Others got the boils and clam basket. None of us was impressed. The breading on the shrimp was heavy and dry. I will admit that it tasted better warmed up the next day. The sides were huge and shareable. The service was friendly when there. The music was almost too loud for table talk. The decor was what you would expect. I am glad I tried but will not be back.

They offer dine-in only with a purchase of a beverage for their $7 Happy Hour and Drink specials. This is available Monday - Friday 3pm-6pm. Although I was the only one waiting at the unstaffed hostess station, it took some time for my acknowledgment by a staff member to offer me seating in a booth. Seating options are traditional tables, booths, bar and patio. The service was okay once I was seated. Feliberto was a good server and kept my unsweetened tea refills coming. The ambiance in the restaurant was pleasant and a family-friendly atmosphere.

Food: 4/5 Their salmon must be an above grade fish and theyve cooked it perfectly every time Im there (medium)- tender, almost pull apart! They used to have a "dynamite salmon" dish that elevated their creativity b/c it had an interesting sauce and a bit of crab on top. Sadly, their vegetable/rice needs work- zero seasoning, and many times, the asparagus is tough or very overcooked. Anyone could cook it. If you get mashed potatoes- you get about 3 fork full (wont satisfy a hungry man). Their steaks are not on par with other upper steak restaurants. Mine was thin and overcooked but I ate it anyway. Service: 4/5 They are usually super slow on drinks, even when I see 75% vacancy in restaurant. But the drinks are good and not watered down. Ambience: 5/5 Prob perfect lighting between casual and dimly lit. Big bar to sit at for singles. Value: 4/5 Most dinners are $25-$35

She found her chicken to be average, saying it lacked flavor. She gave her sides of potato salad and coleslaw very high marks. I had a spicy chicken breast which was on the small side but tasty and spicy enough for me. I also had a biscuit, which was good. She did too. I had a piece of chocolate cake. The frosting was different from the filling between the layers. I thought the frosting on the cake was fine & should have been used between the layers too. Unfortunately, the floor was very sticky. As you walked, you could hear the stickiness on your shoes. I'm not sure what the reason for that was. The napkin dispenser on our table had a coating of dust on it, perhaps it had not been attended to for awhile. When we paid for our food after placing our order, there was no "thank you" or no checking on us during our meal. There was one person waiting for an order when we arrived. A few people picked up orders and left while we sat there and ate. The traffic in the restaurant was sparse for a weekday lunch hour. Overall, average marks for the food and lower marks for cleanliness and friendliness of the staff.

The atmosphere was not at all what I was expecting. My husband and I went out for our anniversary and thought this would be a nice steakhouse. We walked in feeling overdressed and had a table with a family including kids watching shows loudly on a phone right next to us. My biggest issue, though, was I ordered a mocktail (I forget the name, but it was an espresso martini made with non-alcoholic spirits) directly from the menu, exactly how it's listed in there, and was brought a regular espresso martini. I took one sip and could tell the difference. When I asked my server if it was in fact the one I ordered, she told me she rung in a regular one. I was 8 months pregnant at the time, so this was not great. While she was very apologetic and corrected the error, this was a big mishap.
