It's very tough to make all your lodgings without wiggle room b/c the fact is--you can't know 100% how to fine tune your itin. until upon arrival. This was the 1st time we traveled by prepaid/non flexible bookings b/c i was warned that i had to. This led to not too much flexbilitiy in our itin, extra back track driving, &2 nights desperate for lodging that was affordable partially due to a host overbooking and not letting me know in advance that she would sell her rooms before letting me know if i might want to extend our stay, etc. As we came when it was "prime" weekend (Columbus long weekend) it compounded to our problem of hunting for a place. After going to B'ton for a quick bite, we were relieved to get out as it seemed the entire town was in b'ton. We ended up finding this place on CL after I contacted 10-12 places that were not affordable to us. This is a simple inn in a small town out of nowhere with a communal kitchen. (big plus for us being able to cook breakfast & dinner--makes u kinda homey esp after many days away from home & most ppl like the kitchen access). It is not in those typical touristy town so if that's what you're looking for, this isn't for you. There is a "general store" across the street, which we didn't get a chance to check out as we had extra food we brought over. It's a very quiet town. There are probably 5 rooms or so, a little sitting area, a long table in the "dining area" and so you would be able to meet some fellow travelers while you eat your meal. In the mornings travellers congregate in the morning to make their coffee, tea, and breakfast so you will have ppl to chat with. They have rooms w/ shared communal bathrooms (sold out) so we got the rooms w/ bathrooms. There are 31 chickens in the backyard and some ducks and so you get to have free range self-cooked eggs in the mornings. The room was a decent size with a queen sized bed. It got to be a cold in early Oct when we were there. No heat but you could ask for extra blankets. Rooms have 2 windows which is nice as I like to get some fresh air and air out the room during my stay.

The service was friendly, attentive, and prompt from the moment we sat down. We started with some incredible cocktails and shared the smoked maple flash-fried Brussels sprouts, which were outstanding. Between the four of us, we had the Filet Mignon, Iberico pork tenderloin, day boat scallops, and the lemongrass-infused striped bass. Every single dish was cooked perfectly and packed with flavor. It's rare that everyone at the table loves what they ordered, but that was definitely the case. Chef Dylan Taylor's new menu is fantastic, and it really shows. Everything felt fresh, creative, and thoughtfully prepared without being overdone. The dining room is elegant but still feels warm and comfortable. And a special shoutout to owner George, who was incredibly warm and welcoming. You can tell he genuinely cares about making sure everyone has a great experience. Dinner started with an anchovy amuse-bouche that had a nice savory taste. They even offered a free glass of champagne for my birthday. The grilled octopus was nice and light, and the cauliflower was okay with the dish. It was a smaller potion, but left room for the remaining courses. The tagliatelle was cooked well and the tomatoes and mushrooms added nicely to the dish. This was a nice sized portion, and definitely filling. The chocolate raspberry tart was more on the chocolatey side. Maybe my least favorite course from those I had, but nonetheless still good. The check came with petit four which was a nice touch. My waiter, Sergiu, was delightful and made me feel welcome the entire time. I really enjoyed my dinner here and would look to return.

We paid about half that and I was more prepared for the "Inn Experience" before I came. We arrived at 2am and the inn keeper was so nice to leave the lights on and the door open. The setting is just amazing, looks like a painting. While I am completely urban I do love a good farm house! And this is more like a farm mansion! We do share a bathroom with one other room but it's perfectly comfortable. It's like staying at a family farm house! We are also staying for a wedding and I see what the previous reviewer means by sparse furniture but I think that is the design. We had hangers, drinking cups, soap, body wash and a hair dryer, etc.

Also a good base if you're interested in checking out other good skiing in northern VT. Mad River's a great area for outdoor activities, art galleries, and antiquing. The new movie theater in town is a terrific community spot, too.

Also, just FYI, most of the restaurants in town are closed Mondays, Tuesdays and some on Wednesdays as well. But I digress, Mad River Inn has lush gardens and thoughtful landscaping throughout the expansive property. The inn, tap room and restaurant are all very tastefully decorated in modern farmhouse style, with a lot of greige (gray-beige) paint that was very popular a while ago. Thoughtful touches are every where. Our check in person was very nice and helpful. We loved our room for our family of three where we could spread out and not be all in the same room all the time. The twin beds were wonderfully soft (my personal favorite) but the queen bed was definitely not as lush. I slept in one of the four twin beds as my husband snores. The bedding was soft and inviting. AC was great as it was a very hot humid day/night. The complimentary breakfast the next morning was next level good served by a very friendly, very accommodating chef. Homemade granola, breads, bagels, pastries etc but also a cooked to order breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon and home fries. Juice coffee etc of course as well. So I would actually give this place 5 stars but took off some for not having a dining room open for guests every day and the fact that our whole family mentioned the constant low level banging noise we heard below us as we were all trying to sleep. As there were no guest rooms below us we surmised that it was probably a washer and dryer making the noises. Husband said an easy fix to this is an arrester on the dryer that can be added to lessen the banging. Or skip doing laundry past 10pm. Still would highly recommend. Wish we could have tried the restaurant for dinner.

It's an older place and with that comes good old fashioned Vermont ambiance. The sign said good food and we concur. It's simple and delicious. Our server was very kind and ready to serve. I had a breakfast of hash browns, onions, peppers, onions, and eggs with GF wheat toast. Hubby had blueberry pancakes with eggs, bacon, and hash browns. He said the pancakes were light, almost like a crepe and delicious with real maple syrup. It was lunch time but they still serve breakfast which was a nice change. The attached gift shop was small but had plenty of local crafts and VT souvenirs.
