We held my daughter's wedding at the Waybury today, and everything was wonderful - the advance planning with us, the suite we stayed in, the gorgeous cake (made to order per my daughter's specs), the service, the atmosphere (near the beautiful gardens under the big tent), and the food itself - it was just perfect, as was working with the nicest people in the world! I totally stayed here because of "Newhart," and yes, I'm a few decades less than 70 years old. I had never been to Vermont, and when I had the opportunity to go, I found the Waybury Inn when looking to see if it were possible to stay in the Stratford Inn. It was! You can book online in their website is over the phone. I guess you can use travel sites too, but I like booking direct. I chose the Woodland Room. It had a dancing bear, plaid theme. It was great. Breakfast was very good. People were helpful with suggestions of what to do in the area. I was driving to Maine, so I had limited time. They have some things of interest for fans of Newhart that they'll show you. Bob Newhart is great. read more

I had a reservation yesterday Thanksgiving if was the worst meal I ever had for $60. My reservation was at 3:30 and we're only served scrapes all the food was at the bottom of the containers also who eats Rabbit pate! We asked for more rolls and charged for them The pies were a disaster all picked over and to top the meal there was a charge for coffee not included for $60.00! Never again ! read more

Had a fantastic stay with wonderfully friendly and accommodating new owners, locals Halina & Chaz Lyons. This charming inn is located about ten minutes outside of downtown Middlebury. Beautifully decorated in a rustic Vermont style and impeccably clean. A hearty gourmet breakfast is included, with multiple menu choices. The Lyons have retained all of the kitchen staff, including Chef Tony, and the food is fabulous. The grounds are delightful, and the common areas are well-appointed and relaxing. Extremely comfortable rooms and beds. We came to fly fish and got lucky catching both brown and rainbow trout across the street from the inn. Given all of the choices in the area, this is your best bet! read more

Stayed at the historic inn for two nights and I'm from Vermont, just wanted a quick get-a-away. I give the inn a grade of B for its charm and overall experience. The food in the restaurant was by far the best part, delicious! I would dwindle the menu down to ONE rather than 2 plus the specials, it's just too much. Waitstaff and chef were superb :) If you are a guest at the inn, the morning breakfasts are delicious and filling with much variety. We had all the basic comforts, plenty of blankets, fluffy towels, and pillows. I know complimentary lotions and shampoo's are expensive, but it would have been nice to have shampoo and conditioner rather than a body gel-like combo. I really missed not having a mini-fridge for just a few essentials I had brought along with me as there are no refreshments or snacks available on premise. The inn wasn't busy, but having the fireplace lit in the lobby for guests, perhaps just in the morning and evening, would have been a nice touch. I felt like because the inn wasn't busy, it wasn't important, and made things feel a bit tired and cold. I don't expect much modern luxury when staying at a 200 year old inn, but things could certainly be updated a bit and decorated with more thought, rather than cheap generic Amazon plaques. Overall, I think this place is just missing some easy touches that would have improved the overall experience, like the addition of a Christmas tree? It's December and mini pumpkins where still around as decor. All the house plants are tiny and their soil is beyond dry, some plants are still in their ugly plastic pots in which they were purchased. Overall color scheme is dark and kinda gloomy. There were a few communal rooms I would have explored had a lamp simply been turned on, unconsciously inviting one inside. Attention to the details is why someone chooses to stay at an inn over a hotel. With no TV in the rooms, you really do need to make it all about the guests. Perhaps the owners would benefit from some professional hospitality advice and/or guidance. It's a gorgeous building with a lot to offer and the restaurant seems to have found its groove, so I do wish them all the best! read more

You will not find nicer people than Chaz and Halina. Their inn is spotless and well kept, and the customer service is top notch. They went out of their way to show us the Newhart memorabilia and were incredibly gracious and welcoming. We can't thank them enough! This is THE place to stay or eat! read more

Tried to have a celebratory dinner at this inn where we held our wedding reception 41 years ago. I would categorize the experience as a complete bust. We made reservations three days in advance. When we arrived 5 minutes early we were told "We didn't understand how many reservations we had made." Instead of being seated in the cozy dining room with adequate staff, we were led upstairs to an empty rustic dining room with no staff (for a while). After about 15 minutes, in came one (rookie) waitress who was clearly also serving downstairs. When we asked, we were promised twice by the waitress we would all be able to enjoy the dessert special (which sounded quite good on the menu we were given). After another 20 minutes in a still empty room, I had to ask the chef (who was working in the kitchen down a short hallway), "Are we supposed to get bread and butter for our bread plate and butter knife?" His response was: "Your waitress will be with you shortly" - and he then slammed the door. We did eventually get some dried out rolls and enough butter for 3 of the 4 people at our table. They serve from two menus, the expensive one and the more expensive one. All the dishes on both menus were describe in detail and many had many ingredients in combinations that were creative (odd?). The salmon was over-seasoned and served medium-well rather than the medium-rare that was ordered. The seafood crepes I can't comment on since the person eating them only said "fine" when asked how they were. The sea scallops were not seared, but rather appeared to have been poached with the accompanying mussels. Bet they weren't the "dry" scallops so sought after, but rather "wet" scallops treated to improve shelf life. The shepherds pie appeared to have been conceived as "deconstructed" and then reconstructed. The meat (beef as in a country pie) was overcooked, dry and gristley, the carrots were diced and essentially raw, and slices of cheddar had been layer on top of the mashed potatoes and broiled until they too were tough (Cheddar on top of a shepherds pie? I thought the concept was cheesy mashed potatoes, not cheese on mashed potatoes). Finally the dessert were were all waiting for. "Bad news and good news" the waitress says. There was only one serving of the dessert we had been promised. Good news, there are other desserts available. The desert was served with the empty bread basket, the empty butter dish and one half of a roll on a bread plate still on the table. The historic inn is run now by new owners (the 4th since were were married there). I'll wait until a new "New Owners" sign goes up. read more

We had reservations for seven and our table wasn't ready so we said we get drinks at the bar. We quickly realized that they only had one waitress, one bartender, and the front manager for the inn. We were seated at a lovely patio and the manager said that she would get us some water and our drink orders. My friend saw drinks on the bar melting so she brought them to the table . two of us ordered eggplant Parmesan. Unfortunately the eggplant wasn't cooked and my friend could stick a fork in it like it was a flag pole. Our waitress was very embarrassed but also thought it was funny. She gave us complementary desserts and coffee the problem with this inn is they were very understaffed and should only be serving their inn guests. read more

I was wanting to dine at an Inn in Vermont and found Waybury. We dined upstairs in the more formal dining room. Comforting quaint decor with quite uncomfortable chairs. Our waitress, Susan very helpful and cheery.... My husband raved about the rack of lamb while I enjoyed a salmon dish. The chef loves to play with food and "sports" at extravagant plating... The salad was great as was the maple cheesecake... Later after a walk we decided to to get a nightcap in the pub downstairs. Lodging is very poorly managed. I had to leave after only three days, I had a 5 day stay booked. There was maintenance going on outside my room, none of the windows opened. There was no hot water for tea in the entire INN. (only coffee from 5 PM in the afternoon until 8 AM the next morning. ) Absolute worst, they charged my Credit Card for 5 nites, after I explained to them I was leaving after 3 days (I gave them 48 hours notice). They charged my card, then the accountant told me that they had Re-leased my room, but it was THEIR POLICY not to refund the two nights to me that I did not stay. Better bring your solicitor, the Manager 'BRI' said their policy was to charge the person for the entire stay. Even though I had a family emergency that caused me to leave after only 3 days! I believe the practice of charging two different guests for the same room on the same nite is illegal in most states! Food in restaurant is Ok, but service is lacking. read more

This place is a total bust. We had a reservation for 6:45,by 8:15 we didn't even have our appetizers. The lone waitress was doing her best, but she had a really impossible task. The place is completely and totally understaffed, and the management was nowhere to be seen. We walked out after 90 minutes, without eating, we brought this to the notice one of the staff, but didn't even receive the courtesy of an apology. Needless to say, we won't be going back. read more

The wait staff were lovely, however the wait time on food and it's ultimate presentation was quite a dissapointment. We will not be back after several attempts to have a decent overall experience. We had dried out tasteless Cornish hen with hard upon potatos, duck that was small on serving side, overdone and rubbery, Shepard pie dri and tasteless, definitely no savory gravy in this recipe. We had brunch reservations for 11am, when the pub opened. We weren't seated until 11:20am. Heck, the staff didn't show up until 11:05, to start arranging tables. They seemed hectored and unhappy with our presence. After finally being led to our table, a waitress unceremoniously dropped two menus (for our party of five) on the table. We had to ask for more. She wasn't happy. Maybe she was hoping we wouldn't order anything a la carte, but... The brunch "buffet" looked like a mishmash of last night's dinner leftovers, a strange assortment of salads, grilled meats, mushrooms, and a token egg dish. Plus some cold salmon and shrimps, and cakes for dessert. Definitely not worth $18.50 when most of the entrees came in under $15. Our food took about 30 minutes to arrive, not terrible by this place's standard. And it was actually decent. My boyfriend enjoyed the Cajun chicken sandwich and I was satisfied with the portion and taste of the Santa Fe salad. The miserable service continued throughout the meal though. A refill on a cup of coffee never came. Noticing our clean plates, our server asked, "Can I get you anything else?" then immediately flitted over to the next table before any of us could answer. It was honestly the fastest and most urgently I had seen anyone employed there move all day. The decor here is utterly charming (hence the two stars) - everything else is not. read more

Ate in the pub during a small snowstorm, with a big head of a moose staring at me over the gas fired "stove." Very hunter green paint covered the upper portion of the walls along with New Englandy decor. Think Mr. Frost would have wanted something a little more classic and plainspoken, but anyway. Good artichoke and shrimp dip, the tomato bisque was a bit plain - think they could have roasted those tomatoes a bit more for some ooph in the flavour. The bread with the dip was great, the bread with the soup was - manufactured? I suspicious that they had been frozen. Bertucci's frozen dough that you can make into rolls was better than these... Wait staff was attentive and refilled my hot water with lemon with alacrity. I'm giving the benefit of the doubt with my 3 stars for food... read more

The Pub. I was a little disappointed with this visit. Found the food, fish n chips a little bland...the chips, aka fries, were great when hot, after a minute hard and stale tasting. the waitress while experienced was inattentive. I came here with a big group of family and had a great time. The dining here is unique in that there's two different areas you can eat in - the Pub or the Pine Room. The Pub is more casual, but still very nicely appointed and warm. The Pine Room seems to have a bit more upscale of a menu. We were sat in the Pub, which like I said had a very warm, rustic feel. The beer list is chock full of Vermont beers, which I highly enjoyed as an out of stater who loves beer. Out of everything I tried, I highly recommend the Ploughman's Platter (roasted garlic bulb with a pot of herbed goat cheese, olive tapenade, and a toasted baguette), and the Woodland Chicken (sauteed chicken breast with Brie cheese in the center, coated with panko bread crumbs and topped with shallots, sundried tomatoes and woodland mushrooms). The dishes are packed with flavor and executed well and the service was very good. I think this place is definitely one of the best options for upscale dining if you're in the area. We have been back several times since 2012 and I think this is still a good "American" restaurant, we decided to try their Thanksgiving buffet, what is more American than that feast. We were not disappointed in the array of foods. The only thing I missed were appetizers, nada , no shrimp, crudités, cheese, marinated veggies the things I fill up on. A very good thing was their attempt to be also vegetarian, all the roast beef, ham and turkey were on a seperate table almost a seperate room. There were many salads including grains of all kinds, very tasty. I came home and repeated two of my favorites, Shaker chicken noodle soup and their "French cranberry bourbon compote". The price was very reasonable. I have been impressed in previous visits with their innovative vegetarian offerings. read more

We held a 1-day board retreat at the Waybury, and it was just right. Tracey, the proprietor, was accommodating, friendly, and attentive to our needs. We had a large, lovely meeting room with a working fireplace. Tracey and the inn staff were ready with anything we needed. Had a great meal there last night. They take COVID quite seriously. The server wore a mask and asked that we put ours on when she came to the table. My steak was perfect. Upon arriving for our one night stay, we rang the bell on the front desk. But to no avail. But by going to the rear pub, I was able to get the front help needed. I tell this because this seemed reflected for our whole stay. A little bit off. Rooms are tight and small. Queen size bed is real soft, like an inn should be, though my sleep was not aligned with the too soft bed. No t.v. Breakfast was good, and included. Location is convenient. For and early morning coffee enthusiast, I can't get my fix until 7am. Ah, breath, and take in the morning and stay late in the queen sized bed. I would recommend this inn. read more

If you like overpriced, mediocre food and down right rude, inept, snarky service this is the place for you ! The comedy of errors that our large dinner party endured from the bar to the dining room include too many ridiculous scenarios to relate in this forum. It was a truly mind boggling experience, their lack of professionalism and decorum was astounding. Half of our party ended up with "funny" stomachs the following morning. There is no nostalgia here anymore either, don't expect it to resemble the Stratford. There are many other great choices for dining in the area, Fire and Ice has similar fare, The Swift House has an excellent chef and superb service. read more

Went for an apres ski drink, they advertised at the bowl a $4 drink with a free plate of nachos. Waitress was super nice but bar tender demanded we get a "small" plate. They came out with 5 chips microwaved with cheese on top. Easy to say we will not be going there for their over priced food and fake deals. read more

Donna did an amazing job on our cake and it was better than we could have pictured with the two different ideas blended together! Joe was very professional and detailed with all of the planning and Brianna was also amazing with planning and questions we had. We stayed in the Robert Frost room and I loved the decor and feel of the room. It really gave us the Vermont and rustic feel we were looking for. We were able to use the fire pit to hang out and make smores with our guests and also had brunch the next day. Everything was perfect and even better than we envisioned. Never, never again. True story: we made reservations for an early dinner in the dining room, with an elderly parent as our guest. Upon arrival, we were grumpily greeted by the owner, who went on to insist that we did not have a reservation. Not only had we made one, but the room was virtually empty. Our guest was simply dumbfounded, aghast at the inhospitable exchange. We had experienced her surliness before, more than once, in fact, but dismissed it as the food is indeed quite good, and the location works well for us. We would attempt to avoid interaction with her by going to the pub, which, at the time, had an engaging bartender (since moved to far greener pastures). After one more episode when we were told there was no table for us, and then watched a trio who came later seated after admitting they had no reservation, I vowed never to return again- and have kept that promise- for years. I eat out at least once per week, spend liberally and tip well, and do not demand anything more than a decent meal and reasonably attentive service. Do the math- that business now belongs to other local establishments. When the very owner of a business sets such a dark tone, I can only conclude that my business in neither needed nor wanted. read more

The Waybury Inn, famous for its filming of the Bob Newhart show and as a favorite dining spot for Robert Frost, is a must see if you're visiting Vermont. It is quaint, tucked away in the woods right off of Rt. 125, and you will be pleasantly surprised by the beautiful drive there in the fall. I have never actually stayed here, but have eaten here a couple of times. They have a great buffet brunch with some tasty desserts and morning libations. For dinner, you have the option of eating in the Pub or in the Coach room which resembles a hunting lodge. The decor is what I would describe as fancy-rustic and they serve great steaks, venison, wild boar, lamb, you name it. I would definitely go back if I'm ever in the area again because it is truly unique. read more

Had an absolutely delightful meal with my daughter from VT here last night. We ate at the bar in the Pub and the bartender/server, Laura was a delight! She was was funny, nice and we didn't have to wait for a thing! On top of the atmosphere and service the food was delicious and they had a nice wine selection. Spent a night here while on a bicycle tour, and would not come back. The Inn is really showing its age, and needs some thorough fix-up work. The room I had was in the front of the building, which seemed fine except for the "showing its age" part. The windows didn't close tightly enough to seal, so insects could come in (and probably freezing air during the winter). In my case, farmers were harvesting corn in the area so the corn bugs were out in force, and seeking refuge in my room. Note: Corn bugs are also known as stink bugs, for the really foul odor they emit as a defense or when squashed. Couldn't get the staff (the owner was off the property that day) to care much about getting the bugs out of the room, and one surly woman (manager?) slapped another set of keys in my hand and said, "You can move." The offered room was tiny, stuffy, and unacceptable, so I insisted on the original. On the plus side, the petit (sic) filet I had for dinner was magnificent. read more

The restaurant area is divided into a Pub and a more formal dining area. The pub is a cozy room with a bar, a fireplace, and a relaxed atmosphere. As you can order from both the dining room and the pub menu regardless of where you sit, I firmly esconced myself in the pub near the fireplace. As for the food, I cannot stop raving. The wild boar sausages were crisp on the outside and juicy on the inside; the duck with mustard sauce melted in my mouth; the vegetables were prepared to perfection; and the chocolate bomb at the end was just that, an explosion of rich, dark chocolate cake with chocolate mousse, smothered in whipped cream and chocolate sauce and garnished with strawberries and mint. If you love gourmet food at lower-than-gourmet prices, try the Pub at the Waybury Inn. read more
