Make sure you get off with your child and only one parent is with child when attempting to check-in. I understand COVID guidelines but having one parent only does make it hard on a child when they are sick or hurting and need the comfort of both parents. BUT I get it. Kids were throwing up and areas were not cleaned making it hazardous for others. Limited sanitizing stations or wipes to wipe down areas when sitting down or touching things. All the staff was kind and attentive so 10/10. Wish there was more communication with results being given and not having to ask different people "do you know COVID or X-ray results?" Michelle - Nurse Supervisor. I have had an incredibly awful experience at this hospital. But I must say I was not struggling this way until I talked to the nursing supervisor Michelle. The office experience with her was the worst. I called to ask her if she could help me. She was IMMEDIATELY rude, short, insensitive, defensive and hostile. I did not let that bother me. When I asked her the story of the lack of care we have been receiving for the last two weeks she LITERALLY laughed. I have never experienced anything like that in my life. Not can I fathom a nurse of all people having that reaction. When she laughed I told her - I'm telling you what we have been through and would laugh? She said "I did not laugh at you". More than anything I cannot believe that after she laughed she denied it seconds later back to back. She raised her voice continually and spoke over me. She is not fit to lead nurses or work at a place where people are struggling and in crisis. When I asked her her name she raised her voice and said you're unreasonable and hung up in my face. I called back to the operator asking if there was someone else I could talk to and they said no. I spoke with Tony. He was a nice operator. I am worried about being at this hospital because she is in charge of the nurses I have no idea what she is capable of. I would really suggest you chose another hospital. Furthermore that doctors are very kind people and doing their best but after all this time they have not figured anything out in two weeks. Please check the hospital ratings. I am sure a person like Michelle that would treat me that way will make excuses and keep her job. Really she should be reprimanded. Amazing hospital and unmatched care --- for those who can afford it. We had to take our son to the ER for possible emergency surgery. Luckily, surgery wasn't necessary. Sadly, the visit cost a small fortune. Not only did we have to pay the CHOC fees, but we also received a separate bill for their "student doctor" and a third bill from UCI Medical center for their "provider fees." UCI's bill is $600 alone. CHOC's roughly $2,000. I love that they're a teaching hospital, but I should not be billed separately for their students, who literally said the exact same thing our staff doctor told us. Word for word. And why we're charged $600 from a completely different hospital is beyond me. My husband wants to switch to Kaiser. Can't blame him. I LOVE CHOC. I trust them with my children beyond measure. But their prices are not clear, unfair, and unethical. read more

I took my daughter to the ER due to abdominal pain, blood in her stool, headache, nausea after explaining we had just came back from another country. The first nurse was very nice and helpful, after rotations I got a nurse named Krissy (white) walks in and says habla espanol? Why would you assume I do not speak English? My color of skin? That was funny or irritating not really sure. They did blood work, stool test, and gave her IV. After many hours of waiting they discharged us with "we didn't find anything concerning." Well I wanted to know what they tested her for. DOCTOR FUKUMAI states some stuff like dehydration. At that point I am frustrated because I want to know more. I have 4 kids this is not my first rodeo. I then get my discharge paperwork with wrong information and my daughter's name.1. No diagnosis 2. They put she will continue to take a medication she never took or received. 3. No after care I then brought it to the nurses attention (KRISSY) and she says "oh ignore it" I said no I will not ignore it I do not want my insurance to charge me for something you did not give her. She comes back with the correct documents and asks for the incorrect ones back. Of course I kept them for proof. I called the ER today to confirm nothing was caught and of course my daughter had 3 different bacteria's. The Dr. in charge this morning sent antibiotics to our pharmacy. Really disappointed with the hospital. My family and I went through a nightmare with one of our children. He had a splenic infarct and even though the Hematology department was very good and we know they have the best pediatric doctors in OC, the attention, service and the way they handle things and processes is really not good. It's crowned, messy, they lose documentation, communication between the thousands of different people that reach out to you after being discharged is insane and usually don't match with what the previous person said. Chargers are outrageous (the follow up consultations are charged apart and in many cases out of pocket and count as one night being admitted!?) even when you have a very good medical insurance and unfortunately they start driving you crazy about the bills while you are and not being empathetic at all, without understanding that it's very difficult to deal with everything that it's going on when you have a sick kid. Space is not enough, it's loud, sharing rooms make it impossible to sleep, rest and have privacy specially because the severity of the cases are not taking into account when they are admitting you to decide where to send you. Parents bathrooms are dirty and full of hair from hundreds of people and it really doesn't help to the whole situation. Doctors could be very good, but the hospitals are good when the whole system works for families, who are having most probably one of the most stressful and in some cases sad times of their life. We have been to a a few before and this is definitely the worst in a first world country, and no, nothing is for free, so there is a lot of room for improvement. We are thankful for the ones who helped our kid and for science, but we will never go back to this hospital. read more

I can only speak for the nicu. Although I would agree with some previous reviews that the parking situation leaves less to be desired I give my heart to all of the nicu staff. They took such good care of my baby girl and they were always so kind and supportive throughout our stay. From start to finish I was blown away by the service at CHOC. We were transferred in from St. Francis hospital. The nurses and doctors were so attentive and kept us up to speed on everything. We had so much confidence that our son would be taken cared of. We were so confident that we rested couple days at home because the nurses took care of our son like it was their own child. Dr Sinha gave me a drawing of what is going on and what surgical procedure they were going to operate. I had such confidence in the doctors to do the job. My son was carefully monitored and taken cared of. We were at CHOC for a time period of about 3 weeks. Was impressed by the security as well. They were very observant and they made sure no unnecessary visitors would go through. Thank you so much to everyone at CHOC! Keep up the great work! read more

1 week ago my son collapsed at home, hit his head, and was unresponsive. I was able to finally get him to wake up and I called 911. Paramedics came and transported him to the Corona Regional Medical Center emergency room. They were great there and started doing testing on him to see if they could get to the bottom of what happened. We were there for about 6 hours. Thankfully they were able to rule out a brain bleed via a CT scan, but they wanted to have him transferred to CHOC, since it is a pediatric hospital with better equipment and testing capabilities, so he was taken by ambulance to CHOC's ER. He was unable to complete a blood pressure test where they were having him stand for 5 minutes to see what his blood pressure was at the end of it, but he was very weak and started to vomit. His head was also killing him. A terrible headache, coupled with vomiting seemed to me like a pretty clear sign of a concussion, and something to be taken very seriously. However, just after I had helped clean up all the vomit, the nurse walked back in and said he was going to be discharged. I was completely shocked. The resident then walked in and I had to explain what was going on. Nobody was communicating about his inability to complete the test. She then sent in the attending. The attending insisted that even though he hadn't been able to complete the test, that in their opinion, he was ready to be discharged. I had to fight for them to stabilize him, by giving him medication for his horrible headache, Zofran for his nausea, & fluids (which they tried to say they had already administered, but they had not), in order to get him stable enough to leave. The attending said another ER cannot dictate what further testing the new ER will do, which I understand, but that does not allow for such terrible inhouse communication and a total lack of bedside manner. We were there for about 6 hours & the only test they were willing to do was a urinalysis, since my son was unable to produce a urine sample at the original hospital. I was very disappointed in the subpar care & terrible bedside manner my son received at CHOC. read more

This place should be shut down for elder abuse and not worth 1 star. My niece had over dose on Benadryl but they never had called police to an over dose because police had no clue my niece was in there due to over dose. We came there told that we can see our niece by my brother but when we got there they said she was running scans and other stuff so we waited in the waiting area from 8:30am to 12:20pm for them to say to wait longer so I decided to take my parents to go eat. When we called to come back they said that Lorine is running tests to come back tomorrow morning. We came back next day and was escorted by 6 securities asking to leave and again if the mom had issues with me it should only be me not my family. I was surrounded by 4 securities as if I'm a threat to the environment in an emergency room. This is a public area we pay the taxes for this place to be run but I am more then happy to leave. This hospital had my mom and dad leaving in tears heart broken that their grandchild is brain dead and can't see her. We come home and give up after staying there and not able to compensate so much time loss from work for the games they played. We come back that Saturday morning driving from our home in Sacramento and it took about 7hrs again. Again security asked for us to leave again after my brother said we can come since they're going to pull the plug. After hours of sleeping in the car and the waiting room. My brother was then able to bring my parents up but before they brought them up, they were asked to get metal detector and was asked to leave all belongs downstairs. While my parents watch everyone walk up with non security. We were on timed to see our nice and have to beg to get to see my niece one last time. The last set of security who tried to escort me actually have some compassion and actually understand the stress we were going through. We didn't just live 5 mins away 1hr away we drove 7hrs with a few cars not just one. With that security you know who you are and I thank you for your service and finding it in your heart that a loss of a child should not be taken so much less then any case there. I am very unsatisfied with how this hospital treated us as human beings to have to do all this while a child is dead. It's best to dodge this hospital if you can and find a place that is actually kid friendly and loving. In sacramento you would never be treated this way. Only time if it's criminal in this case my niece was neglected and hence why we were there. Social workers don't take anything serious and this is why the system there is so bad. That is why lots of child neglect cases are in there hands because in the end it doesn't matter if your child dies. They will take them body parts which is money for them. CHOC is the go-to for kids, there's no doubt. I don't ever have to advocate for my kids the way I have at Hoag. They know exactly what to do and it's so obvious they *know* kids. I'm so impressed by the way they explain what's happening to the kids and all the stops they pull to make the hospital experience joyful instead of traumatic. However. The wait time. My goodness. It is absolutely insane. And the diff in the attitudes when you question wait times is night and day. Every time I've come here, I feel traumatized. And my children are just utterly spent by the time they're seen. We need a day to recover from Choc ER visits. I brought my daughter in today for a possible mosquito bite infection, allergy attack, or worse, a virus. She was so weak and tired and in pain, hadn't eaten all day, had a fever, and a number of other symptoms. They checked us in immediately and the triage part was speedy, with the nurse treating us so kindly. Then the wait began. We arrived around 10:30pm. We were brought into a room at 3:10am. That's a nearly five hour wait for a child who's feeling sick and needs to lie down. They took every single family in who'd come before and after us -- but us. Meanwhile her symptoms kept getting worse. And I kept telling them please she's exhausted and itching and in pain. I just kept seeing other kids being taken in who were literally just chilling on their chairs. I get that I don't know what I can't see but what I could see didn't convince me that my child should've waited for almost five hours. FIVE FLIPPIN' HOURS. The first time I went up to the front to tell her my daughter feels sicker, she actually said, "Excuse me, can you give me a minute," wo looking up and proceeded to stare at a sheet of paper. The other one was on the phone. I stepped back thinking I'm hovering -- bc manners. She just kept staring at that sheet. I probably could've explained what was in it. The other one got off the phone and ignored me. So I went up and told her my kid is feeling worse. She sent a nurse who said, "She's just here for a bug bite?" Just. "We have kids who were in an accident. It's up to you if you want to stay. We'll just give Benadryl and Motrin to address this." I swear I was falling asleep while she was saying dumb things. When we did go in, one of the kids was in the bed across us. He was absolutely fine -- chatting away, bored, wanted to go home. No doc was w him, no imaging was being done. She made it seem like it was a trauma situation. What a cow. One of the reasons I hesitate coming to Choc is bc they'll make you wait for so long and send you a fat bill for a 10 min visit. You're basically paying for the wait. "The hospital will send you a bill and the doctor will send you a bill." Okay. For what. I should bill the hospital for making me wait. And the waiting room. If they're going to make everyone wait for five hours, the seating needs to be changed. At least for the kids. They're all so tired and cranky and in need of rest, and the added discomfort is just too much. This has happened so many times where my kids are just bawling from the exhaustion of waiting, and it just makes the experience horrendous for parents and kids both. Please do something about the seating -- have more cushioned benches or maybe folding ones so kids can lie down or lean back. You charge us enough! I'm really over it today. My poor allergic kid. The doc is still not in. It's now 4:30am. Six hours and counting. This is a nightmare. 6:00. No lie. This is torture. 6:13am doc arrives just as I'm considering leaving bc at this rate I'm about to collapse and go to an ER myself. Aaaand we need further workup. read more

My child was placed on the PICU floor for a few days. The PICU team was on top of it and I'm forever grateful for them. Agree with all the reviews about the ER. The front desk staff is desensitized. They show no empathy or compassion and triaged my toddler INCORRECTLY. They sent my son with a head injury, decreased level of consciousness, and vomiting to fast track---where the kids who have coughs, sore throats, rashes, minor injuries, etc go. The nurse who finally checked us in even said "he doesn't look good, I'm surprised they sent you to this side (fast track)". When my husband first checked in, he let the receptionist know our son fell out of the crib and she asked "why is he still in a crib?" #1 I didn't know pediatric sleep specialists work the front desk here and #2 It's irrelevant to getting my son checked in for an emergency. After waiting for a while and holding my son who was very drowsy and persistently vomiting, I asked the front desk (which btw had 6 people sitting in there doing nothing...literally 2 of them were on computers and the rest were JUST sitting there chatting with each other) how long it would take since I'm worried about a possible brain injury and my child is persistently vomiting, he said "we don't give out wait times". Cool, thanks for nothing, POS. While that may be true that they can't give out wait times, at least act like you care and let me know how many people are in front of us to give me an idea. The front desk/registration are so non-chalant about their jobs---they put my son's ID bracelet on and it was blank. That's right...blank. They couldn't even do a simple task of printing out an ID bracelet and checking it before putting it on the patient. Hopefully my kids won't need emergency care again but if they do, we're not going here. read more

Every nurse in pre op and recovery went above and beyond. Dr. Webhi and anesthesiologist were both great and made us feel very comfortable. The hospital was immaculate, lobby was super clean, pre op was clean, all toys up there were clean. Recovery area was same. They are so rude, never pleasant to speak with and whenever you ask them questions they have no clue what the answer is and always rush you off the phone if not hang up on you! We waited 4 months for a zoom call with my daughters new neurologist but never received the link to attend the appointment. After they called me to tell me it had switched to a zoom appointment instead of seeing the doctor in person. It has been 2 years since we started with CHOC and they still haven't seen my daughter in person! I mean seriously?! They can't even see what's happening through a screen, and they keep just brushing things off as she will "grow out" of her cerebral palsy. Yes that is what the first doctor told us, RIDICULOUS! This is the final straw with them, I will be pushing this up to the board of directors and the managers of the scheduling team, this is so unprofessional and we have very little answers to what is happening with our daughter and these people could care less! From start to finish this place was amazing , from the custodians to the Drs to the outside attendances, they took such good care of my son they treated him and Us like people not just a number , I hope we never have to go back but if we do it's their I want to be . CHOC's biling & pre registration department needs to get it together. Showed up for our MRI, one of MANY that my son has had there and they tell us we are responsible for a $7,000 bill after insurance. I KNOW this is not correct but they insist if he gets the MRI this is what we will be charged and are unable to assist further, so we left. I will mention this is a regularly scheduled MRI for TUMOR checks so are extremely important. I called our insurance company the next day and they confirmed we were correct on what our copay was so I called to reschedule but fist needed to sort out that their information was wrong for what we were financially responsible for. It took over a week and multiple voicemail by me and my insurance company and no one ever actually called back. After being transferred from wrong department to wrong department I finally spoke to someone able to help confirm our copay and transfer me to the radiology department to reschedule no thanks anyone that was suppose to help. My toddler accidentally ate one of my mothers anti anxiety pills. I rushed her to the CHOC ER. Upon arrival I was visibly shaken (obviously). When I told the front desk/check in girl what had happened, she said to my daughter in a joking way "oh wow baby are you super relaxed now?" Three hours later we finally get called back and she falls multiple times going to x-ray because she was dizzy from the pain. Only after they saw the fractures I had told them all about did we start getting any help. I will never bring my chil to you again and will be sure to make sure everyone knows it. ER review I came into CHOC with a sick 5 month old (RSV). I was greeted kindly by the intake staff and promptly seen in triage by a nurse. After triage, I was summoned back to room 16 where I was immediately greeted by a soft spoken, yet extremely knowledgeable PA. I explained to him my concerns and he wasted no time examining my son and recommending a course of treatment I felt comfortable with that would get him back on track. Everyone that entered our room from the PA, to the respiratory therapist (Eric) to the registration representative, to the warm and gentle nurse who offered to suction my sons nose, to the Pediatrician, were phenomenal. All staff I encountered were knowledgeable, wasted no time in providing their treatment, spoke in a manner in which made me, a non medical person, comfortable, and made a stressful situation for this panicky mom, the best possible. The staff is top notch. I felt seen and heard and that I was actually in control of the health decisions being made for my child. Fingers crossed that I do not have to visit an ER for my child in the near future, but in the event I do, this will be the ONLY place I will take him. Thank you again to all of the wonderful staff that made my first ER experience as a mom, the best possible. read more

Mixed feelings about this place. My son developed Jaundice after birth and since pediatricians were closed on the weekend we were instructed to come to choc ER. We ended up going in on Saturday and Sunday. Experience on Saturday was great... they got us in fast (said since my son was a newborn they didn't want him to be exposed to stuff out there), and the nurses and doctor Valente were all compassionate, caring and efficient. On Sunday the experience was very different. The nurses were great but the female pediatric doctor was on an obvious power trip, talking at us, and jumping ship on pointing fingers at things she thought we were doing wrong. Which by the way, we had seen a good number of pediatricians since the birth of my son about the Jaundice and no one felt the same way she did. We asked to be seen by a different doctor at which point the charge nurse came in with that doctor to rectify the situation. We had a chance to tell her our side and ask for things to be done with the way we were granting consent. She was going to do treatment that was very unnecessary based on what we had discussed with everyone else the past few days. She finally accepted and ran out the door without mustering any apology. The charge nurse was comforting about it. Like I said the nurses were all great... but depending on what doctor you get... good luck! And make sure to stand up for yourself and your child. read more

We went to CHOC while searching for a children's sports neurologist specialist. Dr Taraman was the doctor we searched for and found at CHOC regarding this particular specialty. The hospital/ office was well equipped. The staff and doctors were extremely helpful in providing us care and treatment for our child's recovery as well as aftercare and what information we needed for our child during and after the healing process. I would highly recommend this hospital and Dr Taraman's office for anyone needing this type of specialist. read more

I've brought my son here before when he was 1 and he revived great care, the doctors and nurses were sweet, this time around at 2 yrs the care was completely different. The only kind ppl we saw was the guy at the front desk. We got called after about 2+hrs and weren't even put into a room, we were sat outside of a room lol... like I said my son is 2 and it's 3AM about to be 4 of course he's tired and fussy at this point, he started to throw a little tantrum screaming and crying and it was pretty loud considering we were just sitting in the halls, never have I felt so ashamed as a mother like I did today, all the nurses just stared at me like I should've been doing more when there was only so much I could do especially with my phone being at 5%!! BIG F*** YOU to the nurses that worked this evening because they definitely could've gone about it a different way lol there was definitely tension between the nurses themselves and I could feel it when my sons tantrum happened, they all huddled in little groups and just watched me and then said things between them, specially one RN complaining about the fact that she had too many patients to handle and how It wasn't her idea to have ppl sit in the halls... like okay b**ch it wasn't mine either. The nurse that brought me back mumbled under her breath "I'm just trying to get people in and out" while the dr was also very unprofessional asking "what happened" in an irritated tone.. my son might've thrown a tantrum but only then did they actually get shit done. All of a sudden I was Called up and all of a sudden they were able to get his nose swab done, which by the way was ROUGH ASF!! Y'all are a children's hospital... do better. Last night, I took one of my children to CHOC Urgent Care... She needed x-rays. We were sent to CHOC Radiology. Robert, the x-ray tech, was AWESOME! He was very professional. He made my daughter feel totally comfortable. He had her in and out in no time. This is one of the many reasons we LOVE CHOC! read more
