If you have been mistreated while admitted to this hospital (on a weekend) there is no Ombudsman or a Dept to help you.

Do NOT choose here if you want to heal in the expected timeframe. This began on a Friday evening. Was admitted via ER for excruciating pain and eventual gallbladder surgery. It took 20 hours to actually get the surgery with miscommunications on how to prep me which caused another delay; despite me writhing in excruciating pain. Once I was installed upstairs it didn't get much better. The layout has long quiet corridors with pockets that extend from it. These pockets contain 4 rooms, where the room doors face each other. So staff congregate in the pocket or in patient doorways to discuss/work. It's like grand central station. Super loud 24/7, sound echoes in the pocket and walls/doors have no soundproofing. Forget HIPAA privacy, I could tell you every patient's medical history, reason for being there, if they can shower ... at all hours. There was zero visible effort to be quieter or protect patients confidentiality. Zero chance of rest for recovery. Additionally, visitors have 24 hour access and they clearly don't care about other patients' needs or comfort. The care also faltered. Night nurse staff stated I couldn't have my regularly PCP described meds, was told nothing could be done until day doctor arrived and thus zero sleep which deeply impacted ability to recover. In the morning I was chastised for not being up and walking by Hospitalist Liao; yet for the previous 15 hours, I'd been tied to the bed by IVs, vitals' sensor, leg compression equipment and no one on the nursing staff had instructed me to this next recovery step or had facilitated it in any way. Frustrating and it led me to be there longer than should've been needed. Additionally, zero attention or concern in assisting with personal hygiene comfort. Nothing to brush teeth, face or body wipes to attempt cleanliness and I left with severely matted hair. Gross on top of my miserable experience. Sought administrative advocacy and was told there is no Ombudsman assigned to hospital. Wow?! Googled for their Complaint department but it's only available reg business hours. Absurd there is zero avenue for a distressed patient if not during M-F business hours; in a hospital, in an affluent community. What went right? There was enough manpower that your call button is answered in a timely manner. The food service functioned. Nurses Vilma and Yasmine thankfully are exceptionally experienced, compassionate and are the only reason I was able to improve enough to exit hospital; though after the typical timeframe for this surgery. In summary, if you have the ability to choose your hospital - Go Elsewhere! If you must be here, ensure you have an able bodied advocate present, as much as possible, to ensure your healthcare needs are addressed! To Hoag Business Owner: I did call the number on your generic response. No surprise that there has been zero communication.

I was scheduled to have a procedure at Hoag Hospital last month. It was a simple procedure with my doctor, who acted as the surgeon. Parking at the structure was fairly simple as it was free if you went to the self-parking area. They also offered complimentary valet too, if you needed it. I checked in at the appropriate time and a nurse came to get me from the lobby. I was given the standard hospital gown and socks to change into. There was a plastic patient bag for my clothing and valuables. My procedure had me going under general anesthesia so I met with the anesthesiologist and my surgeon prior to my surgery. I was asked a few questions before the nurse put the IV in my arm and the next thing I knew, I was being wheeled into the OR. The last thing I remembered was transferring to the operating table and the anesthesiologist letting me know that he started my IV drip. Then someone was calling my name and I woke up. The nurse explained my procedure went according to plan and that I had to get changed in order to be discharged. They had called my husband to get the car. While I was waiting in the lobby before surgery, I had noticed a lot of the staff walking by, were excited to see the cafeteria. I was a little confused because, didn't they work there? It turns out the cafeteria had just reopened on the day I was there, after being under construction for YEARS. The nurse and I had a little chuckle about it and when she brought my husband up to my little sick bay area, I told him about it. He thought we should check it out after my procedure. He said he saw an omelette station and a stocked pastry case. I was intrigued. However, the nurses were pretty strict about me leaving in my car with my husband after being discharged, so we never did get to check out the cafeteria. The nurses were really nice and my procedure went as expected. We were a little disappointed about the cafeteria, so I guess we will have to check it out some other day but that may never happen. The facilities were clean and nothing out of the ordinary happened, which is a good thing.

From the moment Dr. June Sadiq walked into the room, I could tell he was genuine, compassionate, and truly cared about his patients. He took the time to listen, answered every question thoroughly, and made my grandma feel comfortable during a stressful time. What stood out most was that he never made us feel rushed. He was attentive, thoughtful, and kept checking on her throughout her visit, which meant so much to our family. When I asked if he could speak with my daughter over the phone to explain my grandma's test results, he didn't hesitate. He patiently went over everything, answered all of her questions, and made sure she understood the situation completely. That level of kindness, patience, and professionalism is rare. Dr. Sadiq is truly a gem. UCI Medical Center is incredibly fortunate to have him as part of its team. Thank you for treating my grandma with such compassion and dignity. We will never forget the difference you made.

If I could give this hospital a negative review, I would. Unfortunately, I had a horrible…read moreexperience, and it was not because of the nurses. The nurses were friendly, caring, and did their best. My biggest issue was with the case managers. My father was admitted to the hospital due to shortness of breath, pneumonia, and cancer. He was placed in the older, run-down side of the hospital. During the summer, the room was extremely hot because the AC was not working, and they provided a fan to try to help. The room itself was also very small and uncomfortable. Again, I want to emphasize that we had no issues with the nurses. They were kind and helpful. The problem was the case management. It felt like the main priority was simply getting my father discharged as quickly as possible rather than making sure he had what he needed to safely go home. He was discharged without several necessary medical supplies and we were told they would be delivered afterward. Unfortunately, the vendor could not provide one of the supplies because the prescription they received from the case manager did not include the required model number. The vendor needed an updated prescription before they could send it. I called the case managers repeatedly, leaving multiple messages and calling every day for over a week. No one returned my calls. We eventually had to contact my father's doctors ourselves to try to resolve the issue. This should not have been necessary, especially for a patient dealing with cancer and recovering from pneumonia and breathing problems. It is extremely frustrating and disappointing to feel like the healthcare system no longer puts patients first. Discharge planning should be about making sure patients and their families have the proper support, medications, and medical equipment--not simply getting them out the door. UCI, please do better. Please consider replacing or retraining case managers who are unwilling to communicate with patients and families and who do not follow through on critical discharge needs. Because of this experience, I would not recommend this hospital, primarily because of the case management and lack of follow-up.

Warning for Prostate Cancer Patients: Lack of Preparation & Professionalism…read moreRating: 1/5 Stars I am a prostate cancer patient who recently transitioned to a PPO to seek care at City of Hope Irvine. Unfortunately, my experience with Dr. Jeffrey S. Yoshida was deeply concerning and did not live up to this institution's reputation. The Major Issues: Lack of Preparation: Despite transferring all my records, the doctor appeared not to have read my chart. He asked basic questions about my treatment (Brachytherapy/seed implants) that were clearly documented. Questionable Clinical Advice: He dismissed my concerns about PSA "nadir" timing for LDR Brachytherapy, claiming "they are all the same," which contradicts standard medical literature and my previous specialists' guidance. Professionalism & Privacy: I overheard the doctor making disparaging remarks about the "strange" patient he saw right before me while he was still in the hallway. This raised immediate concerns about how he discusses patients behind closed doors. Administrative Failure: I filed a formal complaint with City of Hope Patient Advocacy. They lost the complaint. I refiled a 2nd time and they called me in a day and promised a written response in 30 days. That time has now past and I have been ghosted. I canceled any future follow up with doctor and went to UC Irvine. The UCI doctor was spectacular. What a difference! Stay away from City of Hope. Bottom Line: If you are a patient who values a doctor who studies your history before walking in the room, I suggest looking elsewhere. My new doctor demonstrated professional immediately. He demonstrates better engagement and preparation.

The experience of the pregnancy and therefore the delivery was extremely painful (emotionally most of all) and difficult, but the nurses (particularly Krysti) and hospitalists (Dr. Martin and Dr. Diaz) were incredibly supportive, helpful, and compassionate. After they wrap your baby and let you hold them, they give you as much time as you need before they wheel your precious baby away for the last time. The memory box with footprints and a photo and memorabilia is outstanding; the offer of three therapy sessions with a grief therapist is an incredibly generous gesture; and overall I felt supported even in one of the most painful experiences a parent can have.
