After a really disappointing ER visit here last week, I came back to Hoag after being sick for over a week with the same illness. My previous visit ended with a misdiagnosis that didn't match my 26+ year documented history of Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome, and because the actual cause wasn't treated, things got significantly worse until I had no choice but to return. This time, the experience was night and day. I was seen by an actual team of doctors who took the time to review my history. Dr. P Juang and Primary Nurse Reed, correctly diagnosed me with Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome, my actual, long-documented condition, and started the right treatment protocol. I finally got the medications that actually work for my condition, and the relief was immediate compared to the week I'd just been through. They were compassionate, actually listened to how my body was feeling and made sure that even when I left the hospital, I left feeling comfortable. I especially want to shout out my primary nurse, Reed. He was attentive, compassionate, and on top of everything the entire visit. When you're that sick, having a nurse who genuinely cares makes an enormous difference, and Reed went above and beyond. THIS is the standard of care I've known Hoag for over the years. NOT the experience I had last week. I was in the Labor and Delivery Department at Hoag, and overall my experience was amazing. The facility is beautiful, everything is new, and the rooms are very cozy and have everything you need. The nurses were incredibly gentle, caring, attentive, and loving. One of the nurses who cared for me had 25 years of experience. As a first-time mom, I truly appreciated her expertise. Because of her decisions and support, my labor lasted only 30 minutes. Everything I wanted during labor was respected, and the staff did their best to accommodate my wishes. The postpartum care was excellent as well. They gave me a bag full of postpartum supplies to take home, which was very helpful. The only thing I was expecting more from was the food. I had heard great things about the food at Hoag, but I found it to be just okay. The only concern is a billing issue that we are currently trying to figure out because of some unexpected charges. I just got the denial from Medicare for the service that I just took on 07/14 with Dr. Christi Tran. And I just find out since Medicare just pay for this service every 2 years. As a senior people, I just make appointments for the medical service whenever I received the text, or the email reminding me to make appointment to get the medication service. I know that I did get the big discount for this bill, but I still feel very stressed if in the case I got a big bill for the service that I supposed not to take since it is not important for my health. read more

I have been to the ER at this hospital a couple times before and have had excellent help and service. But this time I went the ER doctor basically told me he can't help me with my extreme pain and that I needed to see a specialist. He gave some medicine that was injected into me that was supposedly stronger than morphine to help reduce the pain, but it did not have any effect and instead it increased my pain and when I informed them of this I was just given Tylenol and discharged. This was during the overnight time when I went. I am still experiencing extreme pain as I write this and its still worse then it was before I went to ER. read more

Do NOT choose here if you want to heal in the expected timeframe. This began on a Friday evening. Was admitted via ER for excruciating pain and eventual gallbladder surgery. It took 20 hours to actually get the surgery with miscommunications on how to prep me which caused another delay; despite me writhing in excruciating pain. Once I was installed upstairs it didn't get much better. The layout has long quiet corridors with pockets that extend from it. These pockets contain 4 rooms, where the room doors face each other. So staff congregate in the pocket or in patient doorways to discuss/work. It's like grand central station. Super loud 24/7, sound echoes in the pocket and walls/doors have no soundproofing. Forget HIPAA privacy, I could tell you every patient's medical history, reason for being there, if they can shower ... at all hours. There was zero visible effort to be quieter or protect patients confidentiality. Zero chance of rest for recovery. Additionally, visitors have 24 hour access and they clearly don't care about other patients' needs or comfort. The care also faltered. Night nurse staff stated I couldn't have my regularly PCP described meds, was told nothing could be done until day doctor arrived and thus zero sleep which deeply impacted ability to recover. In the morning I was chastised for not being up and walking by Hospitalist Liao; yet for the previous 15 hours, I'd been tied to the bed by IVs, vitals' sensor, leg compression equipment and no one on the nursing staff had instructed me to this next recovery step or had facilitated it in any way. Frustrating and it led me to be there longer than should've been needed. Additionally, zero attention or concern in assisting with personal hygiene comfort. Nothing to brush teeth, face or body wipes to attempt cleanliness and I left with severely matted hair. Gross on top of my miserable experience. Sought administrative advocacy and was told there is no Ombudsman assigned to hospital. Wow?! Googled for their Complaint department but it's only available reg business hours. Absurd there is zero avenue for a distressed patient if not during M-F business hours; in a hospital, in an affluent community. What went right? There was enough manpower that your call button is answered in a timely manner. The food service functioned. Nurses Vilma and Yasmine thankfully are exceptionally experienced, compassionate and are the only reason I was able to improve enough to exit hospital; though after the typical timeframe for this surgery. In summary, if you have the ability to choose your hospital - Go Elsewhere! If you must be here, ensure you have an able bodied advocate present, as much as possible, to ensure your healthcare needs are addressed! I was scheduled to have a procedure at Hoag Hospital last month. It was a simple procedure with my doctor, who acted as the surgeon. Parking at the structure was fairly simple as it was free if you went to the self-parking area. They also offered complimentary valet too, if you needed it. I checked in at the appropriate time and a nurse came to get me from the lobby. I was given the standard hospital gown and socks to change into. There was a plastic patient bag for my clothing and valuables. My procedure had me going under general anesthesia so I met with the anesthesiologist and my surgeon prior to my surgery. I was asked a few questions before the nurse put the IV in my arm and the next thing I knew, I was being wheeled into the OR. The last thing I remembered was transferring to the operating table and the anesthesiologist letting me know that he started my IV drip. Then someone was calling my name and I woke up. The nurse explained my procedure went according to plan and that I had to get changed in order to be discharged. They had called my husband to get the car. While I was waiting in the lobby before surgery, I had noticed a lot of the staff walking by, were excited to see the cafeteria. I was a little confused because, didn't they work there? It turns out the cafeteria had just reopened on the day I was there, after being under construction for YEARS. The nurse and I had a little chuckle about it and when she brought my husband up to my little sick bay area, I told him about it. He thought we should check it out after my procedure. He said he saw an omelette station and a stocked pastry case. I was intrigued. However, the nurses were pretty strict about me leaving in my car with my husband after being discharged, so we never did get to check out the cafeteria. The nurses were really nice and my procedure went as expected. We were a little disappointed about the cafeteria, so I guess we will have to check it out some other day but that may never happen. Very disappointing experience. My wife received prenatal care at this clinic, and we were later billed for an out-of-network ultrasound provider that we were never informed about in advance. Patients have a right to know when services may be performed or interpreted by out-of-network providers and what the potential financial consequences may be. Failing to disclose this information can leave patients with unexpected medical bills and may raise concerns regarding compliance with patient protection laws, including the No Surprises Act. I delivered my fourth baby at Hoag, so I have plenty to compare this to -- and it was hands down the worst birth experience I've had. Despite all the marketing about their gorgeous birthing suites, they put me in the PACU to labor and give birth: a shared recovery space with three beds, separated only by curtains, right next to a shared bathroom. My husband got a single plastic chair for hours and couldn't rest at all while supporting me. When my baby was only a couple hours old, every other bed filled with triage patients talking loudly and on speakerphone with their translators. No privacy, no peace -- just heat, noise, and chaos during what should have been the most precious moments of my life. We had to ask for a bassinet, then constantly rearrange my table (with my late lunch on it) and the bassinet so others could reach the bathroom. And it's not just the chaos. Newborns lose heat rapidly right after birth -- with all three of my previous babies, a hat went on immediately. Here, they refused, telling me they only provide a hat if the baby is already measuring a low temperature. So instead of preventing heat loss in an hours-old newborn, their policy is to wait until there's a problem. On what planet is that acceptable? Here's what's really going on: several nurses told me Hoag made budget cuts and quietly eliminated the amenities they still advertise. No footprints. Baby hats only if you ask -- and apparently only if the baby's already cold. No baby name card, no commemorative birth certificate -- none of the keepsakes families treasure forever. No swaddle. And the "afternoon tea" they boast about in their marketing? Gone. They're selling an experience they've gutted behind the scenes, and charging full price for it. To top it off, they tried to move me to a postpartum room the size of a broom closet. It took me advocating to several nurses and the charge nurse before they finally gave me a proper room to recover. One nurse even admitted she didn't want anyone else to go through what I did. All show, no substance. Beautiful suites mean nothing when they're always full and your alternative is giving birth in a space never designed for it. I will never recommend Hoag. read more

ER visits aren't typically the best experiences, but the two times I've brought family members to Hoag it was awful. Crowded waiting area, long wait times, beds lined up outside of rooms in the hallway and what appears to be understaffed workers. The staff when they are available seem a bit indifferent, but under the circumstances m, I can understand it. The small paient drop off area is always congested with cars and ER parking is a small lot near a dirt field with construction equipment. Terrible experience at Hoag Hospital Irvine today. A friend is in their care due to metastasizing cancer and septic pneumonia. He was in such horrible pain and was only being given Tylenol. For all the good it did him, they may as well have given him some M&M's. As if that wasn't bad enough, they made him wait hours for the Tylenol. His catheter became disconnected and they made no effort to reconnect it despite it visibly leaking all over his bed and their having been advised the catheter was leaking on two separate occasions . He was very thirsty but was not allowed water due to a choking hazard. It took one of his visitors to suggest and ask for oral swab sticks to alleviate his discomfort. No compassion or care was shown towards this dear man who is in the final stages of his life. This is inexcusable! read more

No one reads the patient's chart history before they do rounds, the staff never responds to the in-room emergency call button, like wait what?! When my own father had a bowel blockage I couldn't find a nurse anywhere to even help assist to take him to the restroom and had to use a bucket next to the bed and hold him myself. ED visit mid-Day on a weekday for check after falling. Was greeted almost immediately and shortly after vitals taken by nice older female tech. Was later brought back. It was very apparent that there just weren't enough staff to take care of so many people!! The couple there were seemed to be doing the work of several. The hoag ER is amazing. The doctor and nurses were wonderful ... my first work night was great. My nurse joy and Leonora and Tommy were awesome and on top of it and They controlled my pain... And then my third day of being here Dr SALAMA completely changed my entire view of hoag... He wouldn't listen to me or how much pain I was in. I did the colonoscopy prep of drinking and the procedure was cancelled. So I went back the next day and got admitted again I was literally crying from overnight because the night before they had me on pain medicine which was very every two hours with Iv meds and this time. I was literally crying in pain my BP was 161/100 from the pain from 4 PM until this afternoon and. He wouldn't change anything he didn't care about the pain I was in. The G.I. doctor was supposed to come visit me that day at 2 PM. Never came..next day rolls around at 12pm and now they just want me to go because my blood is a little bit better even though I need to get a colonoscopy and endoscopy. This hospital is the most beautiful hospital I have ever been to, PERIOD. Every single employee that I encountered from the nurses April, Yessica, the anesthesiologist Michelle, and Dr. Sun. These are the exact people I want to have around me when going in for surgery. This was not a hospital visit for me but my significant other and every single person here was absolutely AMAZING. The hospital itself is simply jaw-dropping. My wait was approximately 4 and 1/2 hours and I enjoyed every minute of it as the restaurant here was superb along with the comfortable seating, wall outlets, gorgeous tv's. I went in for an ear infection and could not hear out of my ear. The day before I had seen a emergicare doctor who told me I need to see an ENT. I called some ENT offices and they had no ENT appointments for months and suggested a emergency visit. I was told that hospitals have an ENT on staff. I was relatively quickly admitted and seen as it seemed to be a slow day there. Low and behold it was another Physician assistant and there was no ENT. So she checked my ear for 1 min and suggested I get some alergy\Sudafed over the counter and you guessed it, suggested I see an ENT. Everyone was nice and polite and then they gave me the bill. I was checked in by a nurse and then seen by the Physician assistant. Actual interaction time maybe 5 min max. The BILL: My insurance is bad so it was going to be cheaper to pay cash with a 35% discount. $1341.61 so out the door $872.05 This is highway robbery and extortion. LOL. That is just for the Hospital. The physician assistant Separately charged me $1,100. FOR WHAT? lol . They have a great racket going over there. 2 weeks later I only have 80 percent of my hearing. He'll spend 2 mins with you and in between watching football on the tv in your room not listen to a thing and inaccurately list your reason for visit, not review results with you, and offer no form of care. I asked employee do I get feed reply I don't know. Reply can you find out? Comes back and says yes they are going to feed you. I had a neck brace put on my neck I layed back resting and a guy named Chris wakes me up . I said are you feeding me . He said NO. I'm here to give you Tylenol . I said what about feeding. Chris reply we are not going. To feed you reply your not ? Reply again not going to feed you. So I got upset and said then get out of my way I'm getting out of here. Chris sacartistic words were have a nice day! I flipped him off. And I left . And now you are billing me. I'm going to sue the hospital for discrimination and prejudice. I'm at paying you a penny . You will be paying me. No one called me to ask why ? What happened ? Are you ok? Hoag profiles their patients and if you don't make 6 figures or more they are treated terribly . I went fountain valley the next day spent another 4 to 5 hours the doctor over there said and showed me the X-ray said I had two hair line fractures in neck. She showed them to me. Waiting for radiologist to confirm. The doctor returns and asks why I didn't tell her or them that I was at Hoag yesterday . I said I did twice. Then her personality changes and says Hoag says your fine. So Hoag that discriminates , prejudice towards me , defamation of character . So you will be contacted and served. And we will see what happens in court . Don't contact me again or I will get you for harassment . Your not going to treat me worse than an animal. And get away with it. CHECK YOUR INVOICES! My family has used Hoag for years, but I can no longer recommend them due to their shady billing department. In 2023, my child had a routine well-child visit--something that's always been 100% covered by our HMO insurance. But this time, I was surprised to see a $35 co-pay charged. While $35 might seem minor to most, I pursued it on principle. What followed was a year-long maze of phone calls, emails, and messages between Hoag Billing, the provider's office, and my insurance. After all of that, I discovered the pediatrician submitted the claim correctly with all standard codes that should have been covered in full. The $35 charge was added later by Hoag Billing--with no clear explanation. My only conclusion: they're trying to nickel and dime patients wherever they can. To make things worse, their billing office is nearly impossible to communicate with. I emailed their PFS (Patient Financial Services) address on April 1 and again on April 5. It's now May 14, and I've received nothing back except an auto-reply saying I'd hear back in 3 business days. If you care about transparency, integrity, and timely responses--look elsewhere. My wife went into the ER at Hoag Hospital Irvine for uncontrollable post-op pain, just 7 days after a procedure. The pain was more than we could manage at home, so we rushed her in. We spent no more than 2 minutes in the waiting room before she was taken back for vitals and care. Our nurse, Cris, was amazing, not only professional but also compassionate. He kept my wife comfortable and truly showed concern for how she was feeling. Dr. Reed was a wonderful provider with excellent bedside manner, checking in regularly to see if there were any improvements. Meghan, the ER tech, was also great--caring, compassionate, and attentive to anything we needed. We were there about half a day, but in that time the team accomplished what we couldn't do at home, bringing my wife's pain down to a manageable level, almost pain-free. Update on my 2 star review. So we get home in the ambulance and in the evening I start checking my spouse's feet and toe nails. Well I found dried blood in 4 of her nails. I know the nurse checked for bed sores. But could we please check feet?? The only reason I don't give 1 star is because Dr Liau was wonderful, caring and informative. 5 stars to the doctor nursing staff???? read more

I did have a day surgery today and Kelly was my nurse, she was wonderful. I did remove my medical port . Kelly ask them to ring the bell for me. They made me so happy. Thank you Kelly and all the hoag staff. read more

This review is for the Urologist Dr. Neyssan Tebayani he should have his license revoked. Pay attention! Do not go to him! Please DO NOT come here! Dr. Tebayani is The Worse Doctor ever have I come across in my life. My family and I have been mistreated, lied to, given false information, delayed in surgery and I lost my Father due to the lack of care and professionalism. He Told us if we do the robotic surgery to remove his prostate he would be cancer free for at least 15 years with Lupron injection. He never told us any other options and delayed his surgery by 2 full months probably he wanted the cancer to spread more to make more $. The cancer spread after the prostate was removed then he said it didn't spread that it was just arthritis. But it was already in the bones - my dad suffered the worse pain anyone could ever imagine like your bones breaking. There was no plan of care from the start to finish. He must be held accountable. I was too sick and weak and stressed to file a lawsuit at the time I suffered great illness myself from the tragedy . My dad was young only 63 years old and could have started him with some localized radiation or even chemo. We never dealt with cancer before and thought that was our only option since nothing else was presented to us. Doctors just want their pay cut for procedures I should have gotten second opinion but we panicked that we might be out of time and it's Hoag so we trusted him. Big mistake cost us my Dads life. I'm suffering from grieving and the fact that my dad could have been alive right now. I read other Yelp reviews and he's killed others. read more

This review is strictly for Labor and Delivery. I recently had my baby here and everything went smooth. There's security right when you enter and they tell you where to wait. We got to the hospital around midnight so it was quiet, but it took a long while for someone to check us in and another long while for the triage to get us inside. Overall experience was fantastic. We got a suite that was huge. The nurses, assistants, and all staff were great. They communicated to each other greatly about my status when they had to switch shifts. We were at the hospital for 3 days and the nurse that took care of me for most of my stay was Ya-Ya. She was awesome, funny and just made our stay easy. You're lucky if you get her! The meals were good, not horrific but not the greatest. I didn't expect much but I was surprised what meals they provided. read more

I visited Hoag Hospital during the AM hours due to experiencing severe chest pain. Parking, checking-in, and getting to a room was relatively fast and easy. My assigned nurse was also very nice, and explained everything. However, as one of the staff members was putting on stickers on my body (my gown was lifted), I did feel uncomfortable because the door was slightly open with the door cover also open and there were a lot of people passing by. Aside from this, the ER doctor said in my medical record that he gave me a chance to ask questions, but it was only really one second before I could respond and he concluded my visit. read more
