You can't go wrong with Choc. Quality, precision, attention to detail and flavor is A++. I have the worst sweet tooth (I specifically have an attachment to chocolate) so Choc is a dangerous place for me. I've managed to contain myself by zeroing in on the savory stuff when I go there (a few times a month!). My favorite items are the the quiche (sold weekends only), savory tarts (varies by season, surprisingly filling), all croissants, chocolate chip cookies and ice cream/gelato in the summer. I am not a coffee drinker so wish they had chai though they do have a small selection of teas. The staff is sweet. Watching them work on on their craft is a treat. They used to have indoor seating but covid has taken that away. I have fond memories gathering with a small group of friends here and hope the chairs will come back at some point. It was our first time coming to this bakery and it definitely won't be our last! First of all, due to COVID there is a sign on the door that only 5 customers can enter at most, all staff is wearing masks including those preparing cakes in the back. One person took our order, another placed them in bags/boxes and a different person dealt with the payment, which meant no one used their gloves to touch both food and money (which I have seen in other places). Everything was super organized, clean and everyone was very pleasant. The hardest part was choosing what items to get! I saw their Instagram which showed there were fresh baguettes made at noon so I was sure to grab one ($3.50) and I love pecan sticky buns and saw some Yelp reviews saying they were good so made sure to order one- it was the last one there so I know that is a good sign (I believe it was $4.25) and then I made sure to order the Jubilation chocolate cake which I heard is one of their most popular ($6.50 or so). Their website seems up to date with current items and prices. We tried it all at home and hands down I will get the sourdough baguette again! It was so fresh and delicious. The pecan bun was amazing and I warmed it up at home in the toaster oven. The Jubilation cake was good as well, although the frosting was slightly more sweet than I am used to. It is rather a new, upscale and modern Pastry Shop & Café, offering selection of baked goods and savory items. Always good to see a new place opening up. The inside was not too big, but not too tiny. They had the kitchen right there, so we got to see them creating their cute truffle chocolates. The pastry chef greeted us with a warm smile, which was extra nice. They had 2 tables, and counter seats by the windows. Not much seating, but I guess it is more a pick-up-and-go kind of place. In there, they had soooooo many beautiful looking pastries, chocolates, cookies, cakes...you name it they had it! They also had refrigerated window showcase, in here, they had cakes, mousse, and cupcakes, fruit tarts, etc. and they all looked great and pretty... It was a dessert heaven in there for sure. We bought a few things to eat inside the shop, and then bought some more to take home with. Everything was really great, tasty, and high quality. Overall, I was super happy with the discovery of this new pastry shop. Their pastries and desserts are all very well made, high quality, and very pretty as well. The craftsmanship speaks loud. The staff here was really nice, I didn't get her name but she was very kind, warm, and helpful. The quality of her service was parallel to the quality of sweets. We were almost surprised at such warm service at pastry shop in NYC... which is sad, I know. But it certainly was a pleasant surprise. First visit. As I drove around the block for the 3rd time, I had to ask myself "is this really worth it?" But there reviews for this place are great, and I really want to support a local bakery. So I drove around some more. When I walked in, I was impressed to see the size of the place and a beautiful display (see pics). I ordered a chocolate cupcake filled with chocolate mousse, a pleasure dome (I think there's what it was called), and a berry chocolate covered cake. Service was good, the three items were highly recommended. Got home, made a cop of coffee and went to town. The cupcake was okay, it wasn't as most and as rich as I was hoping. The dome was also okay, I enjoyed the banana in the center. And lastly the chocolate covered berry cake was my favorite. It was moist with subtle berry flavor and complimented well with chocolate. To be honest, I don't even know if I'm even qualified to review CHOCnyc. It is leagues above any bakery I've experienced in the city. Leagues. To start, don't ask me how or why this place is in Inwood. I realize there are a number of fiercely loyal residents of Inwood. I, respectfully, am not one of them. Among countless mofongo restaurants and dollar stores, stands CHOCnyc like a sparkling jewel, conveniently not a long walk from Buuni (which I hold in similar regard). My wife and I were shocked when we first walked in, the perfectly displayed masterpieces behind the counter, the courteous staff, the bakers in the back sharing their craft in full view. As I said, I don't know how this place landed in Inwood but I'm not asking any questions. I now know how Dorothy must have felt when she stepped out of her dreary world into radiant color and life. Thus far we've tried the chocolate cake, so good I thought I was going have to visit an optometrist because my eyes snapped that far back in my head. The nutella tart, texturally rivaled only by the ideal blend of hazelnut and pralene foundation. The banana nut muffin with oat and walnut crumble topping a muffin base that puts any banana bread or muffin to shame. The pistachio eclair. Such perfection that even speaking its name outloud feels like an offense to such celestial majesty. CHOCnyc is travel worthy. Come visit the Cloisters then enter a meditative state as you endure the ten-ish minute trek through the lawless sludge of Inwood. While the tale of Orpheus will never feel more relevant, your quest will lead you to the greatest confectionery prize in the city, CHOCnyc. read more

My favorite bakery in the city, and trust me, I don't give this rating lightly. Everything I've tried has been excellent, texture and flavor wise! The presentation has been on point as well, everything tastes as good as it looks. As I continue to go the quality has stayed consistent, points for that. We came up here because we were intent on walking through the parks along the Hudson, and, as always, got hungry by the time we even made it this far uptown (and it is VERY out of the way for us). As usual, we turned to Yelp and found this super cute cafe. When you walk in the first thing you'll notice is that you can watch them make everything FRESH, and in-house, right in the back. There's no guesswork like there is with cafes downtown. Here, you're getting the real deal and watching them make it right then and there. It's definitely a great experience and I wish we saw more of this downtown. The second thing of note here is that the staff is extremely friendly. Everyone is happy to help you and works super well together. For any business this is rare, even less so when food is involved. Yet everyone worked smoothly here. When one person was occupied, the next person was able to help equally as well. Overall, we got the chocolate eclair and two cups of coffee. The eclair was big enough to split between the two of us and SO delicious. Quite honestly the best eclair I've had in my life. The coffee was also quite delicious and expertly made. After stopping in here it made me wish I moved 200 blocks north for not only the cheaper rent but the better cafes. Next time I'm taking a trip up to go to the Cloisters and walk around Fort Tryon park, they're definitely on our route. read more

CHOC is a charming neighborhood bakery where you can exchange banter with the friendly employees, but it's also a very formal and efficient operation where you can watch neatly uniformed bakers precisely turning out identical pastries in the open kitchen. Plus I've needed an incentive to visit "the Heights" in Manhattan, so CHOCnyc did just that, and for that I'm grateful! Plus as of now (5/9/2019), my image of their delicacy is on their Yelp page header, so that's worth some merit! :D Your neighborhood bakery, usually it's the gathering ground for some friendly chats with your friends, get the scoop on events going on in the area, and if you're a regular, in time you'll grow on the workers (and them to you) to call each other by your first names & order the usual whilst getting good food, that's what's life about if you've wanted to discover happiness. ChocNYC is located in Inwood on Broadway, miles away from vibrant downtown Manhattan, and sure it's probably a bewildering place for those unacquainted with the scene, but it's easy to grow on and discover some new favs. The closest MTA subway station is 207th St (A), a short 2 minute walk down the block, or 207th St (1), 10 minutes away by foot. Outside, the business has a red & brown "bakery" hanging from the top, a red neon sign above one of the windows with "Sweets" written on it, a full model of their signature "Chocnyc jubilation cake" under that. Indoors, the seating arrangements are pretty cramped, understandable since more than 4/5 of usable space is for prepping or serving food, and there's only seating for 8 inside: 2 sets of tables that can seat 2, and 2 sets of window side seating that are on opposite ends of the entrance, with good views of Broadway & Isham Park. As with any bakery, it's a predetermined expectation to have a good assortment of unique treats, as well as classic ones that are already staples in other establishments, and fortunately Chocnyc carries both. Unique items exclusive here include their signature "CHOCnyc Jubilation cake", a chocolate cake soaked w/ rum caramel & a layer of chocolate ganache for a moist, rich chocolatey cake, a "Pleasuredome", which is a small pastry made with milk chocolate, peanuts, bananas, and rum mousse. Their menu ranges from classic breakfast snacks like croissants, weekend quiche, fresh baked cookies (oatmeal raisin/chocolate chip), pastries such as éclairs & financiers + lemon/apple bars, tiramisu (in a jar), cupcakes filled with rich fruit (or chocolate) filling, several cakes & cheesecakes (almost all can be served by slice as well), tarts, bite sized chocolates, + teas/coffee/hot cocoa. When it comes to custom requests for cakes/other pastries for any/every occasion you can think of, they're very accommodating for just that. Pricing is a bit above average (nearly all cakes are 6$ a slice), especially in an area like Inwood, but it's emblematic of the wave of gentrification going on here & everywhere else in the City, and in this case, offering high quality baked goods, sweets, and other loved treats you'd grow fond of, and would love to get more of, so it seems like a trade off that's dependent on you, the potential customer or Yelper reading this review, to ponder if it's worth it. For me personally, after a long period of absence, I've been coming back on a regular basis for a few months now, and my experience there has been almost positive with nearly all occasions! My first visit was their signature "CHOCNyc Jubilation cake" served with a frothy cappuccino, and boy was I impressed with the moist texture of the cake & the rich coffee presented. After that, I've been going up & down my favorites by name & presented with treats that would go a long ways: 3 of their cream filled cupcakes (usually I order 2), personally I'm a fan of their red velvet because it's rich + soft, as well as stuffed with raspberry cream. I suppose what I didn't like, or to be specific, underwhelming was their hazelnut cake: seems like too much buttercream, and "heavy" in taste, but it's an interesting concept. Their tiramisu is pricy (nearly 10$), but served in a jar, and captures the layout perfectly (good balance of cream, cocoa, and filling). One sunny day, I've had their lemon bar, it was remarkable how tart & sweet it was, and combined with a iced coffee, it felt like a summer treat... even though it was still April. Last notable thing was the éclairs: puffy, rich in chocolate (there's another one w/ pistachio). It does bring happiness that some of the workers & one of the co-owners know me by name! To end this, CHOCnyc feels like the archetypal neighborhood bakery/coffee shop you'd stop around for a break, hang out with friends/others, strike up a friendly chat with the workers if you'd want, and fill up on delicious treats & sweets, and provide worthwhile content on my social media. Inwood/ Washington Heights gem bakery where I've flocked here enticed by their baked goodies, desserts and of course, chocolate. Monday morning before my turn of working the infamous disputed late shift I sought comfort in a phlegmatic state with hot mint tea $2.25, one red velvet cupcake $3.50 and apple streusel sliced pie $5.75. The tea selection is very minimal. The apple streusel is pricey and, oddly, I thought the cupcakes were priced higher but $3.50 is very reasonable. The red velvet cupcake is extremely the moistest red velvet I've ever indulged. The apple streusel was very flaky embedded with large amounts of fresh chunks of apples. The blueberry muffin is the absolute FRESHEST I have ever tasted as it is the moistest and contains fresh blueberries fruit as I tasted actual berries embedded. Open kitchen where all the behind the scenes are visible and the action is non-stop as you can see it happening made fresh and engaging daily. Customer service is very attentive and welcoming patrons dressed in traditional white chef uniform.
