Happy days! Chocolada bakery took over a kiosk in the York Farmers Market where another bakery closed. We bought some eclairs, a marzipan custard fruit pie and some bourekas there. Everything was delicious and fresh. The eclairs were soooo good. They had chocolate and pistachio. The bourekas came in mushroom/ potato and feta/spinach and were an excellent size. A very nice selection of cakes and pies with unique flavors and great service. Highly recommended! You can buy and try a slice of your chosen cake right there. Luckily, it prevented us from ordering a cake which would not be a good fit for our kid's birthday party. But the one we ordered (the Caprice) was a huge hit! One of our family members is celiac, so my in-laws picked up a gluten-free cake here for our get-together at my place. Oops, sorry--forgot to take a pic of it in its full glory. So you'll have to settle for the quarter slice leftover I have... we kind of forgot about it, as they left it in my fridge for almost two weeks. But today we found it, and surprisingly, it's just as moist and good as when we first tried it that day. It's pretty good! I don't usually have gluten-free cakes, but I wouldn't know it's gluten-free at all. The texture is slightly different, but not a turnoff. I think, in terms of sweetness, it's not too sweet--but maybe, since I'm sensitive to sweetness, it's just a tiny bit sweeter than I would've liked, but still enjoyable. Love the fresh cream layers and berries. Since their gluten-free cake tastes this good, I'm curious to try all their other non-GF treats I've seen at their treat counter next time. read more

Absolutely awful place. We reached out about a wedding cake and were met with nothing but rudeness. The entire staff is rude, and the owner behaves completely inappropriately -- talking down to you, using an overly familiar tone, and being outright disrespectful. Forget anything custom -- nothing is possible. Any request is met with irritation and attitude. Yet the prices are insanely overpriced, as if they offer some kind of premium service (they don't). They completely ruined our mood over a wedding cake. Instead of professional communication, we got pressure, hostility, and the feeling that they were doing us a favor. We were straight-up insulted. Zero customer service and zero respect. Never again, and I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. read more

My husband had been seriously ill. We needed a treat to cheer us up and I wanted to stay close to home so I could be home quickly. So I tried Chocolada, hoping this would become one of our favourite bakeries. What a horrible disappointment. I bought two small individual pastries -- and they were dry and absolutely horrible. It was clear they had been made at least a few weeks ago and left on the shelf for sale. What a horrible disappointment. I realize it's tough for all of us -- bakeries need to make money and customers need to spend their money wisely. This is not the place to spend your hard earned money, sadly. This bakery has a great variety of cakes, pastries and pies. I decided to give it a chance again after a previous unpleasant experience and was pleasantly surprised. The service was excellent and so was the cake. I asked to write "Happy birthday " on the cake and they not only did that, but also added chocolate embellishments. Without being influenced by other reviews here first, I saw this bakery right after eating lunch at a restaurant in the same plaza. Review is solely based on the pastries we got. Napoleon Cake - very flakey, not overly sweet and quite a slice and was good for sharing for 2. 'Opera' sliced pastry - appears to taste like mocha, or cappuccino. Not overly sweet which we liked as well. The only downside is that the prices are not posted for the pastry so it's all a surprise once you get to the counter. Overall, total came up to $8.80 for two which was not bad! Would honestly come back to try others but would definitely buy Napoleon cake again. read more

I was so thoroughly disappointed in my visit to this bakery. My initial impression was how small this bakery was. So much smaller than the bakeries I usually patronize. I went there looking for the European baked goods like Potica. Unfortunately, despite there being two employees in the shop when we arrived there, neither of them were overly friendly or asked if they could assist. My son asked me to buy him a chocolate cake slice as there was no Potica in sight, just some very small brioche that was over priced. I waited in one line, not knowing where to stand. There are two cash registers so it's not clearly indicated and no one was communicating anything to me. I never got served as many minutes went by and both employees were apparently needed to assist with the order of the customer directly before me. This order took so long that I had a revelation that Chocolada didn't need to do me any favours, I can go to many, many, many other bakeries to get pastries. The cakes here are pretty good. Have tried a few of them so far. The Trio has softened meringue and is too sweet for me. The ferrero cake is also quite sweet, but it is a nice mix of chocolate cake and crunchy hazelnut meringue. The Napoleon cake is very nice, it has the light pastry but also heavier custard cream. Still tastes good 1-2 days after (I ordered too big a cake so was eating leftovers for a few days after) read more

Childhood bakery! Quality has always remained top notch and their recipes are wonderful! The Napoleon does not compare to any other I have tried in Canada, and is as close to an authentic Eastern Europe cake as one can get! Staff is also very sweet and helpful! Not sure if this location on Steeles will remain much longer due to the condo development that will occupy the land, but I only hope they expand in the future!! Nice little spot it Thornhill, they have some wide selections of marvellous cakes all made in house bakery. They do have few typed on display to choose from, but I find it always best to call a day or two ahead of time and place an order for a cake of your preference for that special occasion. The price might be a little higher than others in the area, but you'll forget about the price once you take a first bite! It's totally worth it. For Cakes I give this place a 5/5 for quality and price. My *gluten free* cake from here was a great surprise, my s/o got it from here after another place he tried to order from didn't make the cake he ordered. With 1 day left he called here (you should give 2 days for custom orders) and they did it in time and saved the situation. The cake was a meringue , layers of cream and crispy bits layer that looked like crumbs but it melted in your mouth. There were raspberries and blueberries also layered in. Tasted very light and looks nicely rustic. My family, who isn't gluten free and doesn't like creamy cakes loved it, I couldn't stop them from eating all of my cake. Mother in law lives in the area and the pistachio eclairs passes her critical radar with flying colors. 10 years as a customer at this joint proves I still aim to please the inlaws, (especially hubby's mom) during famjams! Their store is a bit outdated and looks abandoned and old from outside. The inside is clean and has about 3 tables and the desserts are displayed neatly. They also sell specialty jams and other candies and chocolates. It is beside the Xe Lua resto(which is another fave place to get my pho fix) so we kill two birds with one stone whenever we are in the area. Russian desserts are quite delightful when you want to indulge without having to reach for water after every few bites. My daughter loves the meringue and my sweet tooth craves for the pistachio eclairs-highly recommended! 6 eclairs and 1 meringue came up to a total of $18+ so I think it's quite cheap compared to other specialty shops. The consistent great taste also raises the value and you do get your money's worth. Everyone looks forward to dessert and I think Chocolada just gets it! I have yet to try their cakes. Picked up a bday cake here... got the Ferrero cake (chocolate & hazelnut). It was actually really good, and got a lot of compliments. Tasted quite similar to Ferrero Rocher. I wanted to support a mom and pop shop/small business, and I believe I found a new favourite for sweets! I came here on a Wednesday afternoon after calling earlier in the day. The lady who picked up the phone informed me about the cakes available for purchase. What assisted with my decision was how updated and detailed their website is. At first, I went into the wrong plaza - it's not in the plaza with the Service Ontario! Luckily, I was able to take a small path that led me to the correct plaza instead of driving back onto Steeles traffic. I'm glad the store attendants were patient and polite. I definitely stood out being Asian as the clientele appeared to be primarily European. It was funny how they asked if I was with another Asian gentleman that entered the store shortly after me. I purchased the "Ferrero" - chocolate cake sandwiched in between a meringue layer. I loved the textures, the crunch, and the flavours resembling a Ferrero Rocher chocolate ball. The handwriting on top noting "Happy Birthday" was also pretty and perfectly placed. I will be returning to try their drinks and other desserts. read more

It's not the prettiest looking Pastry Bakery Shop from the outside and it's right in the back corner of this plaza that if you don't frequent this area, you wouldn't even know it's here. Stepping inside there's a few table/chairs for a quick snack/drink but it's not a place you can feel comfy chilling for hours. The setting is most decorative from their Cakes, Pastries, Ice Cream displays which is the main ATTRACTION of the shop while secondary is the Teas/Condiments/Snacks on the side wall shelves. The ladies here are nice and friendly as they didn't have ice for a requested Iced Latte therefore the elder lady suggested using Ice Cream in it's place. I had a Chocolate/Mango Mousse and it was definitely Chocolatey and Moussey but it didn't have as much Mango flavour as I wished for to contrast the Chocolate. I would come back next time I'm in the area as the other items on the fridge display are definitely enticing. read more

This is one of my favorite cake shops from my gluten-filled past. I still dream of these cakes. My husband used to get me one every year for my birthday and oh.my.goodness. So soft, moist, chocolatey and flavorful. The cakes are also gorgeous. The decorations aren't just your typical green happy birthday frosting. They use gold and add in little gold beads. They have an amazing selection and can make adaptions to suit your needs (I believe they now do gluten free as well - but since husband no longer lives in Thornhill, we haven't had a chance to go back). They also sell pastries and other Eastern European delights. The prices are very reasonable - especially for the quality of the cakes. The only downside is location. The parking lot is a nightmare. Super crowded and busy. Honestly though, for the 5-10 mins you're inside, who cares! So so so worth it! Go, buy a cake, and be happy! read more

Chocolada serves a predominately Russian customer base, but their cakes, pastries, and desserts are quite European -- they serve everything from eclairs to danish pastries to quiches fruit cheese cakes. I tried their triangular chocolate treats, pistachio pastries, and mocha swiss roll. I came early in he morning so everything was pretty fresh. The chocolate felt rich, dense, and delicious but the pistachio pastries tasted slightly bitter to me. The mocha roll was also too creamy for my taste. Customer service was okay -- it definitely could have been warmer. The mocha roll was $20, and one of the chocolate triangular treats and three pistachio pastries came to about $10, so price-wise it was reasonable but edging towards expensive. I would come back again just for the rich chocolaty treats, because everything else was just okay. And make sure to come early in the day to grab the freshest batch of cakes and pastries! read more

If I could I would give them no stars!!! SHAME ON THEM! Besides ordering ahead of time with 4 days notice and telling them that I wanted a "fresh" not frozen cake for a Birthday and to write Happy Birthday... When the cake was picked up we were told that would be an extra $3.00 for the writing! Never heard of having to pay to write on a cake from any Bakery unless it was being done on a separate piece of chocolate. This was not! Got home put the cake into the fridge and prepared dinner. When it was time for dessert and coffee, we TRIED to cut into the cake only to discover it was FROZEN! We were very disappointed as nobody at the bakery mentioned the cake was frozen so we might have to leave it out for a while even though we asked for a fresh not frozen cake. Here is the kicker when called the bakery to complain they were very dismissive, rude and after trying to explain to them that we asked for a fresh not frozen cake, they told us that they make the cakes a day before and freeze them!! Does this make any sense....or is it just me. It is not like you paid for a supermarket cake or prices for that matter. Why would a bakery need to freeze a cake for the next day pick up when they have an industrial fridge that is far colder than the normal fridge! They didn't offer anything to compensate for their mistake! Should have gone elsewhere from the get go as trying to place the order was problematic. First time called and was told to call back tomorrow, called next day shortly after 5pm and was told to call back tomorrow they are closed. This after they told us they close at 6pm. After challenging the time of closure they reluctantly took the order! LIKE THEY WERE DOING US A FAVOR!!!! I was looking for a birthday cake and stumbled across this place. After contemplating awhile on what cake to buy, I ended up ordering the Berry Hazelnut. And wow! Probably one of the best cakes I have ever tasted! The hazelnut meringue paired with the frozen berries is such a delightful combination. The cake is also not too sweet, exactly how I like it. Growing up in the Newtonbrook area in the mid nineties, I remember following my mother to Chocolada on several occasions, when she was looking for impressive desserts for her parties! The bakery used to have some sort of Armenian style cake that she was very fond of. I returned to Chocolada a few weeks ago, for the first time in more than ten years, and actually realized the class of this local patisserie! It becomes immediate apparent, that as long as you have a sweet tooth, you will find something that will satisfy your craving. While I did not find any Armenian delights, I did find an overwhelming variety of desserts from across the world, all tastefully decorated and looking quite fresh. The shopkeeper and owner, who were both present at the time, seem to prefer the Napoleon and eclairs if you ask them for advice. I was immediately drawn to the poppy seed roll that looked as good as ones I had found in New York! The taste and texture was a bit different (I could taste more chocolate and cinnamon and less honey in this one!), but overall I would say I prefer the one at Chocolada to the best I had tried in New York! I was also surprised to find that it is not sold by the slice or weight here, and the only choice is to buy an entire roll (~1-1.5 lb). As for the chocolate filled eclair and the beautifully arranged apple-custard pastry, I can testify both were comparable to pastries from the old Francois Payard Patisserie on Lexington Ave. (and anyone who has been will know this is not a small feat!) In addition to fresh cakes and pastries, there are also a variety of specialty and ethnic items on display, ranging from Middle Eastern tea to New Zealand honey. In short, I would definitely recommend Chocolada as a prime option for Eastern European pastries and cakes. Their beautifully kept shop, and the fact that they have kept their elegance and class after many years, has already made me a fan, and has given me a reason to visit the old 'hood more often! read more

Excellent cakes of many varieties. Early favourite of mine was the Napoleon cake which is rich and creamy. Tiramisu is just fine but Opera cake is outstanding many others to choose from. Come early so the cakes are fresh. Prices are fair given you can purchase a crappy supermarket cake for the same price. Hands down favourite cake shop. read more

I was there about an hour or two ago looking for a wedding cake for my wedding in August. I asked an elderly woman who was the owner of the bakery for help. She was rude and racist, she did not help me at all! When I approached her, I am wearing my ethic dress, she sized me and when I asked for help, she stated " perhaps you should make an appointment." Then turned her back to me and began speaking another language with her friend. I walked out of place with an awe. I never expected to encounter such bad services and I am NEVER going to the place again. We end up finding another bakery, who was willing to spend some time with us on short noticed. read more

I must say...couple of years back, this was my favourite dessert place. It used to remind me of how pastries were back in Russia when I was small. Now, it is not as good as it used to be. Still, Chocolate offers a great selection of desserts. My all time favorite is the "Black and White" cake, or in Russian "Smetannik". In my opinion, only Chocolada makes the best one out of all Russian Bakeries I've tried. Another cake I go there for is "Honey cake" or "Pchelka", it is the round cake with bee on it. Sooooo goooddd!!!!! The rest, are just okay. Their "Bird's milk" (Russian delicacy; not made out actual bird's milk, but very fluffy marshmallow-like textured) cakes are no where near how they are back in Russia. Today, i think of Chocolada as a Russian Bakery to go to for my favorite cakes, but wish they would go back how they used to be...a little sweet reminder of my childhood in Russia. read more

As far as Russian/Easter European pastry stores go - this one is great! It's a little bit hard to find since it's in the corner of a pretty big plaza but it's worth looking for! I would suggest putting in your order ahead of time once you find out what you want to buy - they make amazing stuff, for as many people as you want, within a day or so. If you pre-order you're sure to get the best ingredients and everything will be super fresh! AS A PROUD UKRAINIAN, i would suggest Napoleon (sooo much cream, and real stuff too with tons of butter - not like the one they make in regular grocery stores). If you want something simple, go with the cherry pie - it's delicious but a little pricey. All in all, this is one of the best places in Toronto for baked goods of "European descent" read more
