I've lived in decatur for years and driven past this place so many times and honestly - I never went in because I thought the logo was unprofessional (for some reason I associate bad taste in logos with all around bad business choices.) I was in the car with a friend and we were trying to figure out where there was a coffee shop on our route - when we got to the intersection we both saw it and SHE TOO said she'd always driven past because she thought the sign was ugly and that it really irked her that the name wasn't spelled ChocoLatté (which now bothers me too - come on, we're smart enough to get the play on words.) Well we judged the book by it's cover and turned out to be wrong. Love this place for when I need to do some heavy work. I'll usually grab an iced chai and head to the back near the couches and do work for a few hours. Let's start with the good: The coffee! Had the toasted almond mocha. Aside from the fact that they had the Monin bottles on full display [I could buy a bottle of the toasted almond flavoring for the price I paid for the coffee, but it's all about the beans. Right? ;-), ] the coffee was great! The bad: Service was abhorrent. Despite the fact that there was no one behind me in line this morning at 10:25 (hint, hint manager that might read this) the cashier gave short, annoyed answers to my 2 questions, burned my bagel (although she did offer to toast me another one with a very annoyed look on her face...and the offer was given over her shoulder as she walked away...) and left one of her gloriously wavy hairs on said burned bagel. The baristas are so fabulous here! Friendly, quirky, fun, and genuinely enjoy their job. Totally the kind of place I want to just come and hang out. They do this hazelnut hot-chocolate thing that will make you want to smack whomever last made you some hot chocolate. I tell you this because I am not a big coffee drinker. But according to my fellow patrons this popular coffee-shop pours a solid selection of high-quality joe. The baked goods are good, (both the sweet and the savory stuff). The staff is quick and friendly, putting a lot of care into all of their beverage creations. And it's quiet (compared to other coffee-houses). This location is cozy, and seems to be frequented by students who want a comfortable place to study. There is even a small "meeting room" you can reserve for more focused group endeavors. read more

Chai Tea Lattes are my favorite thing in the whole world. Came here to fulfill a chai craving I was having, and wanted to try something new. Walked in and loved the chill and eclectic decor. Looked like a cool place I would've gone to study during college. Ordered an iced chai tea latte. I loved the fact that almond milk was an option here. I got my tea fairly quickly and was just as quickly disappointed. They used a powered chai mix and at the bottom of my cup was an unmixed mess. Love these guys! The staff is fun and friendly, and the coffee is great! As an Emory student, I love to study here, as well as meet up with people, or just drop in for a coffee to go. In any situation, its a good location, lots of parking, cozy and just a great coffee shop. And the coffee itself (good old drip coffee) is infinitely better than Starbucks. I also enjoy their house speciality coffees, and the smoothies. The pastries and pizza foccacia are good too. To comment on Stephanie's post - Starbucks DEFINITELY charges for soy milk - $0.49 to be specific. This is the case at almost any coffee shop. read more

It's my first stop today! Shame on me, i live so close but somehow by the time i remember it's there, i'm stuck in the wrong lane of traffic... I see some people below were not too excited with the drinks or service but so far i'm quite happy with both, Kona Mocha and iced tea were both delicious, and the service was great. I don't know the names of the baristas (Tall guy with beard and cool chick) but they were both very nice and funny. I surprisingly got quite a lot of work done here and welcome the atmosphere and wifi...this might become my new "office". They were also playing the Black Keys, which in my book is always an A+. As a coffee shop to chat with friends at I'd give it 5 stars. As a study spot I'd give it barely 3 stars. My 4 star review is an attempt at being fair but I have a definitely mixed feeling about this place. Pros: the coffee is solid and the Chai is amazing, albeit quite expensive. There are lots of comfortable chairs, free wi-fi and friendly staff. It's right near Emory so it's convenient. Cons: It gets really noisy and very crowded. Trying to find a quiet spot to study is often impossible. The way the chairs and everything are arranged you just can't find a secluded area. The music is also too loud. Bottom line: this place constantly teases me as a study spot. It's just calm enough to make me keep going but not chill enough to actually get work done. This spot was my go to coffee shop pre Covid. And that says a lot because before this I almost always went to Starbucks because we get a monthly allowance there for drinks as most of us work from home. Yes. I had free coffee and went out of my way to pay for often because this place is just that good. It's a GREAT place to get work done, they have good music, the people are friendly and the drinks are just gourmet. Like nothing I've ever really seen before in a coffee shop. Their dairy free options are top notch. My favorite drink here is the chocolate chai. Omg I am a chai and chocolate lover and I cannot tell you how much I loved this drink. It's like a churro dipped in dark chocolate it's so so so good. Pre Covid, I would get work done here for a bit and then head to the record store next door, it was a great break on my work sessions. I'm thankful that this place was able to survive Covid. If you are in the mood for truly delicious drinks for people of all ages and tastes, meaning vegans, coffee and tea drinkers, and kids this is the perfect spot. There is a drink for any and everyone here and it's a great place to stop by if you're with kids. They have so many different hot chocolates that are also delicious. First let me say I have never actually been to this location, however, a sweet friend of mine brought me a cup of Chai Latte made with Macadamia Nut milk that has forever changed my life! I love Chai Lattes and unfortunately most places do not make them very well. I have to admit that ChocoLate knows how to make an amazing Chai!!! I live in Midtown and I will drive there for this drink. I am actually going to go there as soon as I'm done writing this review because talking about it has brought back some beautiful memories of that Chai! YUM! Que paso, chocoLate? How do you only have three and a half stars? I would like to know. I think it's absolutely wonderful. The coffee is about on part with Starbucks... I suppose perhaps some things can be more expensive,but it's independent and supporting local is a great thing. (not that I'm not at Starbucks 13 times every week). Their cheesecake is good and on the whole I think the pastry/desserts are wrote delicious. I don't think they're made in house, but I'm not sore about that. It's always clean, pretty fast, and the coffee is great. Everything you want! Wifi is good, but there are almost always a ton of people, so maybe keep that in mind. But really... It's a great vibe, whether you're grabbing coffee or hanging out. I also love the porch thing outside. I do a lot of my work here since it's close to home. Pros: Really friendly staff who are fine with you sitting to do work and even bringing in take out. Comfy seating, lots of outlets. Cute decor. Open late. Neutral: The coffee is totally ok. The coffee drinks are also exactly ok. A little overly sweet and the drip coffee is a touch on the bitter side. The baked goods are about the same- a little dry, a little overly sweet, but completely Fine with a capital "F." Cons: Music is a little loud to work, and the coffee is definitely overpriced. Lacks real food options, but close to good mediterranean and satisfyingly inauthentic thai/chinese/vietnamese. If you are nostalgic for the days of Lilith Fair, then pop into chocolate for an afternoon. Seriously, I haven't heard that much Sarah Mclachlan and Natalie Merchant since my middle school days... That being said, this coffee shop is ok. Pretty basic coffee drinks, coffee milkshakes and sweet snacks. The staff is nice enough and honestly since I used to run a coffee shop, I know the type of people who are attracted to those jobs prefer to socialize before and while they make your drink. Again it's not like they're making my last meal so I can be a little patient. That being said, they are not speedy. I can support the fun friendly community vibe they're attempting to cultivate, it's very Decatur. There's usually a pretty steady crowd of decatur\emory types in there and most of the people there(myself included) settle in for a few hours. I bumped they up to 3 stars because they do have a private room that groups can use for FREE(yes that was directed at you java vino). You do have to sign up on the list outside the door in advance if you want to use it and if someone else is in there the staff makes you kick them out. I get why they do that, but I don't really love it. Customer service is what wins customers. I wouldn't go out of the way to grab a coffee here but overall it's a pretty average spot that is an asset to the neighborhood. read more

This place was oh so yummy! The staff is extremely friendly. They have a conference room where you can rent it out (FREE) if you sign your name in advance in a slot. They also have comfy couches (where I actually took a 20 minute nap sitting up) and ample tables/bar seating for those that aren't lazy asses like myself! Okay for specialty drinks, go somewhere else for plain coffee. Been here a few times- flavored lattes are okay but for a plain cup of Joe, I'd rather go to any gas station. First, a disclaimer: I'm not a huge coffee drinker. So if your criteria is based on the quality of the coffee, then STOP READING. Otherwise, here's my criteria and breakdown... Open space? - Coffee shops is where I often go to get work done. Like lots of light coming in, high ceilings, and space to "think." This place has this in the front, but not in the back... which leads to the next point... Dedicated Space? - Does it offer a "working" space that is separated from the "socializing" space? Yes, but it is backwards. The open space in the front where all the light comes in is where people socialize. The cramped spaces in the back is where the "workers" gravitate towards. Not really comfortable back there. Service? - No complaints here. Young people working a summer gig... Or maybe a grad awaiting the big break. No attitudes, like the rock star wannabes in certain places. Music/Noise Level? - In this place, I've heard annoying Soundgarden, and equally annoying experimental noise. I love indie music, but I don't want to hear John Zorn, while I'm trying to get a paper done. Final verdict - Bring earplugs, to get work done. Bring a friend, if you want a "brighter" chatting spot. Geared more for the generation with-short-attention spans... If Apres Diem is IFC, and Starbucks is VH1, then I guess this is MTV. read more

As always, I'm all about local businesses when it comes to coffee, especially if they cherish fair-trade, organic beans, you know, all the green shenanigans. Their coffee is not bad- just simple black coffee will hit the spot. The espresso-based drinks are always great. It's not too burnt, and adding extra shots isn't overwhleming. Not to mention their variety of milk choices for the lactose-intolerant. The cafe itself isn't too bad- the front seats are comfy and lounge-able for socializing. But if you're like me and need a place to study, the back part of the shop has tables for your working needs. The baristas are real friendly, plus, this place plays some good music :) The only negatives I can pick out are that they have a minimum for their card transactions ($3), which is a pain for the no-cash-carrying college student. Also, their "free wifi" is code-based, so you need to refresh the code with a purchase every hour or so. But, the baristas are always willing to give you another without an additional purchase. It is nice to go to a coffee shop that is not Starbucks for once. This place is home-y, and the employees are friendly. Their chai tea lattes or iced chai tea lattes are out of the world. Compared to the milk filled ones I get at Starbucks with almost no taste, this one has so much flavor. It is not too cinnamon-y either. They also have a great raspberry white chocolate hot drink that is good and can give you a little caffeine fix. Their prices are a little pricey, but I'm assuming because they use good ingredients. They also have a banana iced drink smoothie that they use real bananas for and is very good. They have free wifi, and it is a pretty spacious place to study. I've only been here once and it is pretty conveniently located so I will update/review again if this place impresses me more in the future. In general, I like to support neighborhood coffee shops. ChocoLate has a nice atmosphere with good natural light. Decent amount of comfortable seating. I tried to order their daily drink special (eggnog latte?) I usually don't go for this type of thing - I was feeling festive. However, they were out of the eggnog latte (I came in around 2pm). I didn't really care about that, but we had already paid so it would have been nice to know ahead of time. I guess they couldn't give me a refund because they encouraged me to choose a similarly-priced item, and they couldn't make many useful suggestions. I was just staring at their expansive menu for a good minute, since I have no idea what is 'similarly priced' to an eggnog latte. This is what I get for trying to be fancy. Finally I ordered a chai latte, which ended up being pretty decent but nothing fantastic. My gf had a piece of pecan pie; she was not really excited about it. read more

Their atmosphere is nice and pretty conducive for studying. There's plenty of seating, and local art covers the walls. My only gripe is that the alternative music they play is sometimes a bit loud. I am a big advocate of trying to support local businesses but it is hard to make myself go here instead of other places. They are expensive, not all that great, and the worst part is they just aren't very friendly. I have gone in three times to try and have them win me over...but it hasn't happened yet. It is, however, a comfortable and pleasant enough place to hang out. While I have never used it I think it is really cool that they have a separate room for study groups or...whatever. One of my favorite cafes in the area! Plenty of couches and tables to get your study on or catch up with a friend. It has a very comfortable, unpretentious and homey vibe. They make INCREDIBLE mochas here, as per their name. The bakery items are varied from cakes to cookies to biscotti and macaroons. I ordered a small mocha and after studying for a while and noticing it wasn't made, I was apologized to and quickly compensated with the same drink in a larger size. read more

An easy fix would be changing the music from some of the most mindless, non-popular, B-side, pop-music I've ever had to listen to. A slightly more difficult fix would be putting in tables large enough to hold two lap top computers, for students to study in groups. And perhaps the most difficult fix would be telling the baristas not to tell the customers how "out of it" they are today. I think it would be unfair to rate a coffee shop after 1 visit...so I've waited until I went to the ChocoLate at least 3 times during the day to work. I am a graduate student and new to Atlanta, so I was seeking a place with: 1. WIFI- solid signal strength 2. good coffee- there is a very large menu with lots of options 3. space to write with a laptop or read- there are tables and chairs, as well as sofas. The sofas and reading chairs are a bit old, so i opt for the table and regular chairs. The parking lot is large and plenty of spaces. The coffee shop does tend to be crowded during the weekday starting at 10am with plenty of people doing work and meeting colleagues/friends. I will say the music is quite loud at times, so I am always sure to bring my noise canceling headphones. Its got a coffee house college town vibe and that is fine with me for the purpose of writing and getting work done outside of the library. read more
