    Thai Chicken Curry
    Rachel W.

Wow wow wow, I didn't know pies could be so good! My impression of pies for the longest while was that they tend to be quite bland. I was blown away by how good and unique these pies were! I heard their fish and chips are amazing, and the table behind us even commented "these are the best fish and chips I've had outside of London", but for me I'm really not a fish person, so it was only pies for me. My boyfriend and I ordered their Thai Chicken Curry, and the rotating Special pie (Roast Beef Dinner). I really liked the Thai Chicken Curry one for the flavor - strong flavor, perfect amount of heat, and the consistent, flaky crust! We also had their Raspberry Lamington for dessert which was nice, but not quite my preference for dessert. It's a small restaurant and seating is a little limited. I will absolutely be returning when in Decatur - there's more pies that I'd like to try, and the owner couple is so nice! Even when they were short staffed and swamped, they still served with smiles

Heap Pies is a New Zealand inspired treasure serving savory meat and veggie pies, plus a rotating seasonal menu alongside a few classic staples that never leave the building. Everything is locally sourced and made from scratch, by hand, in house, which honestly explains why this place has people lining up like it's giving out free happiness. Important housekeeping, before you go their hours are limited and they're mainly open for lunch. Translation, don't "wing it." Plan your visit like you actually want to eat here. Also, the fish and chips only make an appearance Friday through Sunday, featuring either a whole 12oz or half 6oz haddock or cod filet. I found Heap Pies while hunting for lunch on a Friday around noon and immediately stopped scrolling when I saw the unicorn of Yelp ratings 5 stars. Rare, suspicious, required immediate investigation. The Decatur location is their main spot, right off E. Ponce de Leon Ave, drive slowly or you'll pass it and spend the next 10 minutes questioning your GPS. Parking is free and plentiful, which already put Heap Pies in my good graces. When I pulled up, folks were eating outside in 50 degree weather like it was patio season, and honestly, that level of commitment told me everything I needed to know. Inside, the space is quaint, casual, and cozy, with communal seating. The line was long but calm, no sighing, no eye rolling, just people patiently waiting for their turn at joy. It gave me plenty of time to stare at the menu and debate life choices. I came for fish and chips, but those pies were definitely whispering, "Next time." The young woman taking orders was friendly, warm, and genuinely hospitable. She took time with each customer, answered questions, and made the whole experience feel personal, rare these days and very appreciated. Now let's talk food. My 6oz haddock filet was massive, fresh, and perfectly flaky, clearly not playing around. The fries were seasoned just right and didn't even need sauce (but let's be honest, I used it anyway). The house remoulade paired beautifully with the fish and brought everything together. I was impressed across the board, from the service to the food quality. One thing to note, if you're in a hurry, this might not be your moment. The fish and chips are cooked to order, so patience is required, but trust me, rushing greatness is never a good idea. I'll absolutely be back, and next time I'm finally committing to one of those pies.

Fish and chips. Hands down the freshest and best I've had in Atlanta.

Oh man, I dream about how awesome their fish and chips are and it's totally worth going back for this alone. Location is small, with several places to sit communal style like in a beer garden. Sadly, many of the pies were out so If you're looking for the savory pies, try to come early in the week. I think my trip might have been on a Sunday. Service is counter service and they will bring out the food to you. The staff are super friendly and they came out to check on us. Definitely a place I would regular.

Thai, chicken pot pies, and fries are great. Liked curry sauce for fries. It was clean. The Thai chicken pie is a little spicy slightly.

Found this spot when searching Yelp after newborn pictures and the 5.0 rating with over 40 reviews was enough for us to spot it. It took me two tries to win me over though my wife was a believer after the first time. Ordering is at the counter and they will have pies ready to go and pies you can take to go. The reheating instruction are easy. There is also a fish and chips special on Friday. Seating is long benches and there is a TV always playing rugby. My recommendation? Let the server help you decide. Clear winners for me have been the bacon, egg, and cheese pie plus the steak and ale. My wife and her cousin swear by the thai chicken green curry pie. They like it so much I've only been allowed a single bite. The fish and chips is pricey but worth it. Light batter and flaky cod. I recommend coming with someone and splitting a two piece and getting your own New Zealand pies. So Heaps Pies well deserves its reputation. Spot in for a casual lunch and experience a slice of New Zealand cuisine.

Heaps Pies? Heaps good mate! This little pie shop down the street from Downtown Decatur is a must try, especially if you've never had a meat pie before. As an Aussie, these pies are the real deal. New Zealand is bang on serious about their meat pies and these have been brought to you right from the source. These pies are on the fancier (and slightly expensive) end compared to the fast-food pies you'd get down under, but pack a serious punch and are made fresh to eat every day. The menu of pies rotates around depending on the day, and they do fish and chips on Fridays and the weekends which we'll definitely have to come back for. Beer and wine, both local and from New Zealand/Australia are also available for purchase with your meal. They also sell pies to take away and bake at home, if you want to save for later. Usually frozen pies bake out remarkably well and keep everything intact. The shop is small, with only a few long tables to sit on and a little lounge area. Staff are extraordinarily kind and helpful and service really went above and beyond for such a little, casual place. A TV in the corner has a constant loop of Kiwi sports on as well. Parking is plentiful in the lot outside and most of the people we saw were coming in and out quickly to pick up take away orders so it turns over pretty quick.

Finally made my way to Heaps and it did not disappoint. It is located in a small plaza next to Publix, plenty of parking in the lot. I visited on a perfect sunny day, the side of the restaurant completely opens up which was really cool. I was greeted by who I believe was the owner, and a case of delectable looking pies in front of me. I asked him which flavors were best, he said they were all pretty good. I decided on the beef & cheese and it was served with a homemade tomato chutney which the gentlemen said he'd been making since he was a kid. I love homemade recipes and was excited to try it with my pie. First glance of the pie - a beautiful golden brown flaky crust, it looked so fresh and yummy. First bite in and it was delicious! The beef was ground, great flavor and comforting. The tomato chutney have a nice subtle sweetness. I can't wait to come back to try more flavors! They also have a lunch special (I believe it's Wednesday- Friday) where you get a pie, a side & a drink for $17.

I'm a big fan of meat pies and had been meaning to try this spot for a while. It's a little off the beaten path, not in Decatur proper or Avondale Estates proper but nestled between the two, which in my opinion is a plus as parking is free and ample. My wife and I have been three times as of writing this review. The pies are delicious and substantial. They change up their menu regularly but keep it updated on their website. I would suggest getting there earlier in the day if there's a specific pie you're craving, as they can get low near the end of the day. On the weekends, Fri-Sun, they do fish and chips and here's where they truly surprised me. The fish filets are huge and perfectly breaded and fried, but the fries are PHENOMENAL, maybe the best I've had in the greater Atlanta Metro, if not the US as a whole. Adding to the delicious food; the fantastic and enthusiastic customer service makes us feel welcome and leave you with the expectation that they expect you back. And we will be back. PS: when they have Lamingtons, GET THEM

This is a super cute little place. Very casual, great place for a quick lunch. They sell hot pies to eat there, but the pies can also be taken home and frozen to have later. We didn't try the fish and chips this time. The Thai green curry chicken pie was delicious, probably our favorite thing of the day, but the curry fries were also really tasty. The chili beef and cheese pie was also solid, just not as much of a standout as the curry. We'll be back to try more.

There's plenty of parking space in front of the shop, which is nice. I've been buying his pies and stocking up on the frozen ones since the days he did pop-ups and had a booth at outdoor farmers markets. I'm glad he finally opened a brick-and-mortar shop. I visited on a Sunday around lunchtime. The shop was almost full, but there were still indoor seats available, which was great. The ordering process was quick, and the food came out fast. We had the fish & chips and the beef & cheddar pie. For now, the fish & chips are only available on Fridays and weekends, but he plans to expand the menu soon. The cod was very fresh and not greasy, and the fries were tasty as well. As for the pies, they're what the shop is known for, solid quality, and it really just comes down to picking your favorite flavor. The shop is partially self-service: each order comes with an empty cup, and customers can grab bottled water from the cooler for their table. After eating, customers return their trays to the tray station and dispose of leftovers and trash themselves. The owner is very friendly and was present at the shop when we visited. He answered all my questions about the special items and frozen pie stock. To me, these pies are one of those rare food items that maintain their great quality even after being frozen. There are oven reheating instructions on the website, but I found that using an air fryer works perfectly. I thaw the frozen pie in the fridge overnight, then air fry it at 350°F for 15 minutes works like a charm. Highly recommended!

The space is clean inviting and well decorated........... I was the only person there yesterday from what I assume is a soft opening. I never heard of this place or tried them at a farmers market like the others. I just tried them today because I was just hungry and they were close by. I tried them on the recommendation of yelp. They had 5 stars. I did not eat all day so I was hungry. The person who works there recommended beef and cheddar. The pies looked kind of small so I also ordered the Chana Masala and mashed potatoes. The beef cheddar seems bigger or heavier than the Chana seems like they stuff that one to the brim. It was pretty good the crust reminds me of a beef patty there was no spice to this one it was pretty good. The Chana was a little smaller than the beef and was not as filling it had a tomato base which was okay. And just a little spice that I really enjoyed. I ate the Chana fast and was full half way through the beef I also ordered the mash and gravy. The mash seemed dry and I am so confused by that because it had gravy on it. Maybe it needed some butter or some milk or something but it was lacking flavor for sure. I don't think I would come back portion size (I feel these pies should be smaller and cost less or slightly bigger for $12) flavor (it was alright nothing spectacular) location (I am not over on this side much) But I would say feel free to give them a try and let me know what you think

First time here and share the fish and chips and a beef and cheese pie with my husband. The food was excellent and prepared fast. I do think they're a little pricey for what you get but it was delicious.

Glad to see another restaurant occupying this space. I'd driven by Heaps a few times and decided to stop by and give it a try. They have a variety of savory pies, a few sandwiches, and sides. I wasn't totally sure what to expect from the pies, but I ordered the Thai chicken curry because I love lemongrass & anything hing Thai. And I must say it was quite tasty, as was the kale salad I ordered on the side. I'll certainly be back to try the other savory pies. Service was quick & they bring out your order once it's ready. The set up is causal with picnic tables, so just get in where you fit in and enjoy your meat pie. I also noticed they have frozen take home pies too, which is a nice option.

Love this little ice cream shop!…read more I've visited Butter & Cream before, but my latest visit was a favorite. After spending a sunny afternoon celebrating my besties birthday with her and a few of our girlfriends, we decided to keep the fun going with some ice cream. Never too old for a random sweet treat! Although we were already in the neighborhood, we lucked up on a day when everybody and their mama were outside, which meant limited parking. So we had to pay for parking on this visit, but ended up making it worthwhile by strolling around Decatur Square with our cones. I When we entered, there was one employee behind the counter and they were so kind. There were a few customers in front of us and some behind us in line, so apparently we weren't the only adults in the city who were craving a sweet treat. The store was so cute and covered in art and clocks created with ice cream scoops. We decided to taste a few flavors that were new to us and the employee was so patient with us. We all decided to go with the honeycomb flavor, and I added on a scoop of strawberry because I believe in treating myself. I was bummed that they didn't have sugar cones, but a waffle cone worked. My ice cream was SO good! And they were quite generous with the scoops. As I'm writing this out, I'm wanting a fresh pint of my own again. Such a great stop when you're craving something sweet!

I ordered the Cookie Monster with toffee cone bits on top. The texture of the ice cream was great, very smooth and creamy, which is exactly what you want. However, the flavor itself just did not come through. It almost tasted like a base without much depth. The only moments of real flavor were when I bit into the cookie pieces or the toffee bits, which were both enjoyable, but the ice cream on its own felt like it was missing something. It is a bit hard to describe because the consistency was there, but the taste simply did not match. That said, I am not writing Butter & Cream off at all. I have had other flavors here that were absolutely delicious, which is why I am willing to give this one another try. Overall, still one of my preferred ice cream spots in Decatur. I am just hoping for a little more flavor the next time I order the Cookie Monster.

The staff is also really nice and patient when my friend and I were trying to decide on pastries. Overall, I think these pastries would do good in an air fryer/oven. I would come back, but bring the pastries home to warm and crisp them up a bit. I also really want to try their burger which is only sold on the weekend at certain times!

I decided to try the infamous Sunday burger. I was not in the mood to drive to Kirkwood on Sunday…read moreand miss what I drove there for. I called in the morning to confirm the time they serve it. I was told to get here by 12:30pm because they serve the burgers at 1pm and the line gets long and they run out. Found out later in line from the person in front of me that they make 130-170 burgers and they sell them all. That's a lot of burgers. I thought it was all hype because I got there at 12:20pm and there was no line. I went in and asked to make sure this was the right place, the guy said to wait outside, they start selling it at 1pm. I was 1st in line. Waited 5 mins then went to my car to get my headphones. By the time I came back, 3 people were now in front of me. I guess the 12:30pm recommendation was valid. By 12:35pm there were 20 people behind me. I do not like waiting, so I'm glad I was early to at least be served 1st. Never been here before, they are busy. When I got here, it was packed with people buying bread and pastries inside. I didn't get to buy the sourdough bread. It was sold out. Apparently, the locals come every Sunday for this burger. I guess they hang a burger flag out when it's burger time some of the people in the line in front of me felt a way that they didn't do that this time. I guess they're getting comfortable and just trying to knock the rush/crowd out. I think coming at one would be fine if they're selling 170 burgers I think the problem is they don't limit the amount of burgers you can buy. At least I don't think so. Now for this burger. Not worth it. Not worth the wait or the hype. I'm still surprised how basic tasted. They need a housemate sauce or something on it. It's literally just one burger and pickles. If it was pack full of flavor and well seasoned, that would be enough. But it's not. The best part about it is the bun. And 30mins after eating the burger, I didn't feel so good. My stomach started hurting, and that was the only thing I ate all day. I avoid eating beef altogether, but I will here and there as of late. My boyfriend eats beef, but he started feeling sick maybe an hour later as well. I was disappointed because I didn't know they pre-make the burgers and just throw them in the bag. You can't customize it or anything. I think we got sick because the burgers were medium. They were not cooked well, and I always get beef burgers cooked all the way through. The way they're rushing you out of there like an express assembly line is crazy. I really wanted to wait to ask them to prepare me two, made well since they were making burgers as they were going along, I believe. I would have waited to have them made well but the way they were rushing you out, it just wasn't the place to ask for anything extra or additional and I don't like places like that. Too strict too many rules and you don't feel comfortable. Even though you're spending $70 on 2 burgers and some pastries. Compared to a pack of ground beef to make your own burgers, this is a lot. I bought two burgers $17 each, and 5 pastries to try because I won't be coming back here anytime soon. I will say, great pastry selection. I was talking to a guy in line and I asked him if he ever had the kouign amann. It looked good. He said yes, it was good, and the chocolate kouign amann, he's going to try as well. I purchased a chocolate kouign amann, a regular kouign amann, cardamom bun, a hazelnut bun, and monkey bread. I wrote everything down outside that I was going to buy so I didn't waste any time. I already spotted the monkey bread when I walked in. The woman packaging up the food was about to fix her face to say they didn't have any monkey bread, when they were clearly at the other end. Maybe that was her doing me a favor because I was highly disappointed in the monkey bread. I'm on a monkey bread kick, and I have been trying it at a lot of places. This one was not good. They sprinkle lemon zest on it, which kind of threw me off, and the bread itself was very dry even after warming it up, adding melted butter and honey. It still was not good. The best thing was the original kouign amann. The chocolate one was not good because they have chocolate on the inside kind of like moose or ganache, but it was overwhelming. It tasted like dark cocoa chocolate, and I thought the pastry was dark because the whole thing was chocolate, but it actually was burnt. A lot of the items looked burnt to be honest. I think the demand is getting to this place. The cardamom bun was just ok. The hazelnut bun was just an extension of the monkey bread to me. Not a fan. I remember growing up, we went to the local butcher and bakery to get fresh meat, bread, and pastries for cheap. I like the idea of a local bakery and butcher shop like this, but this place is not cheap. I'd skip this one.
