I loved getting their goat's milk caramel ice cream, and as my daughter observed, we couldn't find this flavor anywhere else since we moved away. They still have it (though they call it toffee now). Prices have gone up (of course) and is actually comparable to the chain ice cream shops across town. As always, the workers are super friendly. Two scoops is $6.13 in a cup, and I got the mentioned toffee ice cream made with goat's milk. For me, it is still very good: very creamy with a very rich caramel flavor. My daughter said hers wasn't as good as she remembered, and she is pretty good about things like that so it must be different (which makes sense since they changed the name).

We've been fascinated that Chocolate Shoppe sends their special ice cream to independent ice cream shops across the country. Being in the Midwest for a vacation we made a special stop in Madison to see the Chocolate Shoppe flagship store, operating since 1964. The store is not large, but it has the good stuff: all 48 flavors! It took us a little time, but my wife finally chose Caramel Chaos, and my selection was PB Hearts Chocolate - never seen in CA - with peanut butter ice cream, chocolate layers and peanut butter cups. They have a few indoor tables and a number of outdoor ones as well. There was a steady stream of customers while we were savoring our ice cream. Still as the flagship store I was expecting a little more. First there is no indication that this in fact is a special store, with unique history. I wish there was a write up in the store about Chocllate Shoppe's founding family and how it all came about. And where they are today, with customers across the country. Still, this was a memorable stop for our ice cream pilgrimage.
