I've been coming to Cholie's almost every day since high school. I made it a tradition with both of my sons for over 15 years. Unfortunately, today that tradition ends. Yesterday, I came in at the same time and ordered the exact same meal and received the correct order. Today, I ordered again: * 2 pepperoni slices with fries * 2 cheese slices (no fries) * 2 tacos When my food was handed to me, the amount of fries was noticeably off. When I calmly questioned it, the employee gave three different explanations: 1. "This has always been the amount given." -- which is false, as I was here yesterday. 2. "Management cut back portions." 3. "This is the amount that comes with two pizzas." As I tried to explain that my order was incorrect, the situation escalated unnecessarily. She: * Told me to "shut up" * Refused service and snatched the food from me * Mocked me verbally and turned to the cook speaking Spanish about me * Then, instead of issuing my refund, charged my card another $28 while offering a customer my food for free to spite me All of this over fries. What was once a nostalgic, family staple has now become a place we will never spend our money again. Disrespect, poor customer service, and mishandling someone's money is unacceptable especially from a business that's been supported for decades it's ALWAYS something with this place now. read more

A Hyde Park neighborhood staple! I heard they have karaoke on Thursday's I believe. Decent pizza! They have the old school Chicago giant pizza. I always get just cheese and sausage..add extra sauce (they usually don't add enough). Beware of adding onions and bell peppers. They don't cook it down before they add it to the pizza. It's usually in big chunks which I personally don't like. They do have a surpassingly good Torta and Burrito! My son gets them after school often! The burrito is $9 and the Torta is $8. The shrimp tasted old and had a strong fishy flavor. Overall I would order again because it's really good I just won't get shrimp pizza ever again. read more

We had come from another march/protest and it was a COOL drizzly night in June. Instead of small and quick slices we opted for 2 medium whole pizzas, 1 cheese 1 sausage. This place has been such a staple for better or worse in the area. (We actually wanted to go to Italian Fiesta because it is closer to us, but they do not answer the phone, and they closed earlier.) Same friendly staff and everything. I imagine they are doing ok in the pandemic, as they are mostly carryout anyway and it is a VERY small space! We had to wait 20 minutes for the pizzas, and we had to wander outside for a bit, not very pleasant but we made it work. The pizza is consistent and good tasting. read more

Mildsaucy approved! Definitely a hyde park staple. You can literally put mild sauce on anything in this reasonably priced joint. The prices have somehow remained the same and are unbeatable compared to the many eateries on 53rd street. The thin crust pizza is hot and ready. The staff is super friendly and the evening hours are an absolute plus. The owner is extremely nice and welcoming and the service is rapid. If you are ever on your way home from work or school, or you're just looking for a quick bite to eat, this is the place to go! The place is pretty small but no worries, you can eat it on the go! So this is for their takeout pizza. I don't know what's going on in the Hyde Park/Kenwood/Bronzeville area but the pizza is pretty uniformly awful. I had high hopes for Cholie's but again seriously disappointed. If you want great pizza in Chicago, unfortunately you'll have to look elsewhere because this ain't it. Crust is extremely cracker-like, the sauce has no flavor and the ultimate product reminds me of a frozen store brand. You're better off with grabbing a fresh pizza from Mariano's or Aldi. One of my favorite places for slices of pizza on the south side. I normally swing by after I've had drinks somewhere in Hyde Park. The slices have a good ratio of pepperoni to grease. Savory flavor and good hearty crust. I realize they offer tacos and burritos but can't attest to their quality as I only ever enjoy the slices of pizza. read more

Fast, inexpensive and reasonably edible, given the price point. I placed an order over the phone for delivery - two tacos, a torta and a slice - and it got here in about 20 minutes. Nothing was terrific; but given that the bar of expectation needs to be low for this kind of place (and price point), it was acceptable. The soft, seemingly homemade, tortillas are the best part of the tacos. They're very plain: meat that's been seasoned with just salt and pepper (at least it's not greasy), topped with mediocre supermarket tomatoes and iceberg lettuce. I had to dump half a container of green salsa on each one to give them some flavor. There are plenty of $3 tacos all over town that are a lot better. The torta is indeed huge, which I'm afraid is the most impressive thing about it. Besides the salt and pepper-seasoned meat, supermarket tomatoes and iceberg lettuce, it's also topped with a half a slice of raw white onion and some kind of white sauce. The bread had been brushed with butter and grilled, which was nice; but unfortunately it didn't hide the fact that at some point it had also been slightly freezer burned. The slice of pepperoni pizza was flavorful and not greasy. But the crust is easily a quarter inch thick. To my mind, that can't be called thin crust anymore. It's too thick to even fold in half, the way a slice of New York style pizza is supposed to be eaten. I'm giving them four stars because it does as good a job as this category of restaurant is supposed to do; and the service was both fast and friendly. But I'm afraid I don't think I'll be going back. read more

Five stars because it's such a good compliment to the Falcon Inn. Through the main storefront, or through the magic of the tavern-window, you'll enjoy cool, quick service, and find yourself pleasantly surprised at Cholie's being so damn affordable, especially considering the solid quality of the pizza and fries (not to mention their menu's other myriad and sundry). If you're in the adjoining tavern, or just meandering past the Metra on 53rd, stop in and enjoy Cholie's by the slice (cheese and peperoni or sausage). Drinking/Drunk and hungry for more? The Veggie Special - thin-crust or deep-dish, but with green-olives substituted for the tomatoes - is my recommendation. I prefer the thin-crust: I'm a fan of the less-famous, secondary style of pizza-crust that Chicago has originated (the thin, cracker-board crust), and likewise love the nice, variably-sized square-cuts perfected in Midwest taverns just like this joint. read more

I ordered from here during my four years in HP. I moved here as a New Yorker, skeptical about this whole Chicago pizza thing. Cholies did win me over though with taste and affordability. I recommend the 2 medium special (2x12in w/ 1topping each)- feeds 2-4. It used to be $10 for this, and I believe it is only slightly more now. Toppings: Your standard sausage or pepperoni are good, but try some of their more unusual ones such as sliced beef, candian bacon , ham, or shrimp (extra$). Unfortunately they do not have regular bacon. They sometimes under-cook the crust, so if this worries you, ask for it crispy- half the time they will listen to you. The place is dirty and worn down, but every foodie knows that that's where the food's at. Forget the slices you need to get the made to order small pizza. Why? We ordered out food from Cholie's for dinner at work, so I haven't actually been to the storefront, so I can't comment on atmosphere or service. I ordered a thin crust cheese pizza, so I was expecting thin crust pizza. Instead, the crust was quite thick almost soft--not at all the thin and crispy I had in mind when I ordered it. Both the sauce and the crust were bland and flavorless. There was too much cheese and, though melted, it would have been improved if it had had five minutes longer in the oven. Someone else ordered a BBQ beef sandwich and was not too impressed. He ate about half and then threw the rest away instead of keeping it as leftovers. Maybe I'm being overly critical in giving Cholie's two stars, but I have standards when it comes to pizza and I have eaten a LOT of pizza throughout Chicago. The quality of pizza left a lot to be desired, but the price was right. I'm not sure how Cholie's compares to other pizza joints around Hyde Park (or if there even are any at all), but sitting among all the other pizzas I've tried, Cholie's is a solid two stars, bordering on three. This place brings me back to some of my fondest high school memories. The place is small with only a few places to sit, there's 3 booths one big booth, two mini ones attached to the wall. Which may be a negative to some but the food and great prices make this place an instant favorite for several years. The pizza slices and fries are tasty albeit unhealthy but if your that hung up on that, just go to some veggie joint. For as little as $2.75 you can an enormous slice of pizza and great helping of fries. Cholies has a really big menu so if your not in the mood for something other than pizza try one their sandwiches or their shrimp baskets. The service is always quick and they also deliver. I also recommend the thin crust. Cholies is one of Chicago's best kept secrets in city filled with great pizza places. read more

Based on my experience last night (my first time at Cholie's), and the older reviews on yelp, I'm inclined to think Cholie's Pizza has gone downhill in the last 1 - 2 years. The prices seem unreasonable for a non-gourmet pizza shop. My 16" pizza, sparsely populated with tomatoes, onions, green peppers, and mushrooms came it at a hair under $20. I didn't see the 2x12" special that another reviewer noted. Perhaps it is no longer available or, equally likely, I was simply blinded by hunger. After waiting 35 minutes (come on folks, I can make a pizza at home in about the same amount of time) the pizza was ready with, as another reviewer noted, slightly undercooked crust. The only reason I'm giving Cholie's 3* stars instead of fewer is that, after getting over my monetary and temporal disappointments, the pizza tasted fine -- in a very average way. I'm sure I'll find better pizza in Hyde Park. * After having had pizza from other establishments in Hyde Park I'm dropping this down to a 1. Ummm, well they serve single sliced pizza that you can get with or with out fries. BE WARNED, the pizza slices taste like ass and do not expect pepperoni after like 2pm. Cheese and sausage are the choices you have. The sammaches are good and I suggest the Roast Beef or Italian Beef not dipped. Incredibly cheap, slightly above average counter serve pizza and mainly American cuisine that dabbles in Mexican & Italian. Pizza by the slice is literally ALWAYS available there on the counter in the warmer spinning about, you can even pick out what slice(s) you want. Don't expect anything incredible here, 4 stars only because everything is super cheap, good quality on the other hand deserves only a 3. The only thing I didn't like was the Italian Beef, super chewy.. But the burgers, tacos, fries, and pizza was tasty. There thin crust always seems like it should be cooked 5 mins more to get a crisp on the bottom. Colies have like a special sauce because their pizza is really good, and it lingers in your mouth for a while. I hate the highschool kids that are always there so I always get it to go.
