Chong is a funny lady and a tremendous cook. Think of her restaurant as her own personal kitchen in her house. Chong's used to be a sit down restaurant before Covid, but now is largely a takeout business. If you want to reach her, she doesn't accept calls, only text. You can pick up in the evening, but all orders must be placed (via text) prior to 4pm. It might seem complicated but it's actually so easy once you know the hours and realize 1) this is no longer a sit-down restaurant, 2) all orders must be texted and 3) all orders must be placed before 4 pm. And this is why I've updated my review to 5 stars....along with the food ofc (see below). If you love Korean food, Chong's is OUTSTANDING, serves good sized portions (not like the way overpriced fake Thai spot downtown whose portions are half the size they used to be and puts zucchini in everything, eww, so not authentic!), and is also very reasonably priced! Definitely the most authentic food in the county, and I am so grateful to have it here! It is every bit as good as NYC Koreatown, and that's huge considering the very terrible food in this area. I order here a few times/week! I can tell you the Kimchi Jigae is superb, very rich and thick and high flavor without being overwhelmingly spicy, but she also sometimes does it as a more soupy kimchi jigae, and that is also delicious. Very great on cold days. That's what I mean about this being her kitchen. The bulgogi is perfectly tender with just the right amount of sweetness and comes with rice and another side of radish kimchi or other. The side dish she gives with all of the meals of steamed spinach in sesame oil is divine. The fried rice is also delicious and so is the bindeduck appetizer. Do NOT pass this place by. Yes, it is a one woman show. And you do not get 6 or 8 side dishes. But the food was REALLY GOOD! And it took a while to get our order, but it was worth it. AND she made Mandy from scratch for us, cuz she was out. And they were best since Korea. Wife got pork gogi. I got the LA Kalbi. The Kalbi were whole beef rib bones, not the silver dollar sized sliced up Korean style cut beef rib. BUT she peeled the meat from the length of the beef bone, they were marinated, it was only 15 bucks, tender and tasty. The rice killed. Had a side of spinach. I guess cuz I am white (meegook) I had to ask for the side dishes (ban chan) and only got three, but they were good. My review of the Cleveland Korean restaurant still stands, still best just because of all the sides. But this place, "Chongs", had the best tasting Kalbi and rice. Just a smaller menu, and slower. But you can call in your order, or after you have been there you can get her text number and text it in. And NO dol-sut bibimbap, but a great selection on the one page menu. And you can byob (makes it worth the trip from ohio alone!). Just be PATIENT, and you will be rewarded. Going back for the squid soon as I can. Love me some spicy squid and veggies! THE best Korean Food you will find in this area. The owner and chef is happy to prepare authentic Korean dishes and she is both kind and on time with take-out orders. She works wonders from a small kitchen at the back of a dining room that is very similar to what I enjoyed when I lived in Seoul. Her Bibimbap and Vegetable Kimbap are my favourites, but I have enjoyed every meal she has prepared. When we walked in the door, the place was pretty quiet and nearly empty. We were greeted by the sweetest old Korean lady who is the only one working there. She is the owner, hostess, waitress, and chef. She is pretty much the Korean grandmother you wish you had, and her voice simply melted my heart. She warned us right away that it might take a while, but we weren't in a rush, so we said we were okay with it. She became super comforting and welcoming. We ordered, and she recommended we get the Korean vegetable pancake, which quickly became one of my favorite parts of our meal. Although she told us it might be a while, our food came out super fast, so ignore the people who say it took forever. Even if it did take a while, the food is well worth the wait. The sides came out first along with a spicy dipping sauce and our pancake (which is huge by the way- I recommend you cut it like a pizza and put some of the dipping sauce on it). Kimchi, kimchi-style radishes, and bean sprouts came with what we ordered. We ordered the cold cucumber noodle dish and bulgogi, which came with rice and seasoned spinach. The bulgogi was cooked and seasoned perfectly and tasted amazing, and the spinach was good and garlicky. The noodles were good, but not the best item in our meal. Next time I would love to try their bibimbap, as it looked delicious from the pictures online. Mrs. Chong offered us more kimchi as I obviously loved it, and it was amazing. There was so much delicious food that we were so full we could barely eat any more. Because we ate so close to closing time, she gave us little samples of the leftover roll she had just made for a takeout customer. I am pretty sure she would have kept bringing us more food had we not told her we were full. For such amazing food and so much of it, I was expecting the bill to be huge, but it was only $28 for all of that food plus two sodas. We gave her $40 because of our great time there. This place is the best Korean food in Pennsylvania. I recommend the bulgogi which is BBQ beef with white rice and red spicy paste. Next try Bibimbap. Mrs Chong cooks everything by hand. So a one person operation. If you show up with 5 people and they already are busy with two other tables you have to wait. But it's worth the wait. I always call and ask if they are busy. If not I tell Chong my order and that I want to eat there and have my food ready at 2pm for example or just get it to go. If you get to go is the best option because no wait. Here's the truth about this place: it belongs on a sitcom, kinda like the soup Natzi on Seinfeld. Its a pretty basic whole in the wall kind of place. Chong, the owner, does everything start to finish and the food is wonderful. My favorites are: vegetable pancake, taegogi, bulgogi, and bibimpap.. BUT if you want to have REALLY delicious home style Korean, you have to follow a few rules: (1) CALL IN YOUR ORDER BEFORE COMING . It doesn't matter if you don't mind sitting and waiting and you tell Chong this. Even if you want to eat there, call ahead. This goes against logic I know but calling ahead makes Chong happy and she will let you know she disapproves if you do not call in your order. CALL. IN. YOUR. ORDER (2) Push down on the door handle hard because it sticks. Try not to make Chong come out from the kitchen to open the door :-/ (3) You will also make it on Chong's disapproval list if you ask for unnecessary modifications to your meal. My Nen Be U Dong Noodle bowl (handwritten on the bottom of the menu) was so flavorful in an incredibly seasoned broth & big enough to share with my husband. He gave me the sad face when there was only a little left so I passed it over. My Taegi Gogi (pork Bulgogi) was perfectly seasoned & served with sauced spinach & rice. All 3 items mixed together were a perfect bite! My husband ordered Pork Bibimbap which he also enjoyed. Our last 3 Korean restaurant stops have been run by amazing women doing literally everything alone. Mrs. Chong asked if we'd called our order in advance & informed us that's preferred so we wouldn't have had to wait. First time trying...we weren't sure what to order since there aren't any recent menus so we decided to go in and place our order in person. The owner/chef/waitress let us in ( she keeps the door locked and you ring the doorbell). She is super sweet!! we placed our order of 3 yelp recommended items - bimimbap, japchae and taegigogi, and told her we would be back to pick it up. I love the food. I love the lady. I love the charm. For me, it is worth the drive. I haven't been there in a while, and writing this review is making me sad and hungry. I've taken a few guests here, who were impressed. If you ever wanted a Korean grandmother, this is your chance. I've had mandoo, pancake, bibimbap, bulgogi, ramen, and a few other dishes. I love the simplicity of the restaurant and the menu. The food is always good and fresh, though you may wait awhile. !!! What a pleasant surprise! Chongs Is a bit of a loner in comparison to the other Korean restaurants around pittsburgh. A well hidden gem in Beaver Falls, I decided it was time to try it :) First off the two women working were amazingly sewer towards my fiance and I. Very welcoming and kind. The wait is quite a bit and they do recommend you call ahead, but if you don't have anything to do and you arrive early enough (we arrived at 630) it isn't bad at all! It gave us some good time to relax and talk. The food was outstanding. Knowing the two women working went back and cooked it all felt really good and it showed in the food. Everything came out piping hot and fresh. Handmade Mandu in Pittsburgh is a rarity. Easily the best place to eat in Beaver Falls. Not only is the food outstanding the owner and chef is the best. She recognizes our number in her caller ID (and has since the sh second time we called!) and is the kindest lady ever. If you like Korean food then you must eat here. It is better than anywhere else I've eaten this cuisine. My top recommendation is: Bi bim bap, ramen, yuki mandoo, and the barbecue. And everything else too. It is all so very good. My children both have hearty appetites. They often eat more than we do, but when it comes to Chong's they will eat and eat and eat. Our youngest will even ask for it for his birthday and for holidays. Our oldest asks for it almost every week and has done his best to learn to eat with chopsticks so he can eats it the "right way." Beyond that, I have met other people from Korea in there who have traveled from far away just to get some home cooking. Sometimes driving past other Korean places in the process. This was the best experience. I am not from the area and decided to get takeout from here for lunch based on positive reviews. I was frustrated at first because I could not find a recent menu and tried a few different online sources. So I called the number, and the lady said she would send me the menu (what?). I said ok, but was caught off guard because I figured it was a land line. A second later I got a text message with a picture of the menu- well I guess that works. I called back a few minutes later and placed my order. I picked up the food 20 minutes later (convenient street parking right out front). It is such a cute little spot, and you can feel how authentic it is. I could see her assembling the mandu by hand in the back, and making everything fresh-to-order. The woman was very friendly, and had my bulgogi dunbop waiting. We struck up a convo and she gave me some extra kimchi as a side. Everything was delicious. Note: I forgot to take down their hours of operation. It's becoming increasingly difficult to find unreviewed businesses on Yelp. Much to the chagrin of Kay who doesn't understand my FTR duty (she thinks it to be an obsession), I fretted over where to lunch yesterday afternoon. Kay's picky, and has had strong cravings for Asian fare of late, whittling my choices down even more. After a half-hour of net-fu, I uncovered Chong's. Heck, as with many an internet listing, we didn't even know if they were open! To our relief, they were, and what a rabbit's burrow it is. If not for a small neon sign (Ok, Kay has GPS...), we might have passed it. We were greeted by a tiny and most adorable Korean woman (her voice alone is heartmelting) and an young Anglo couple from the neighborhood who have befriended her and become her unofficial off-the-payroll help. And darn it I only remember the name of one of the three people who happened to be there when we came by, and that's Johanna (our waitress of sorts). I only recalled her name after searching for and finding their Facebook page. She's a member of the "Chong's Korean Cuisine (is amazing!)" group. I'm guessing it's the closest thing they have to a website. http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=142676855750272 I won't soon forget the marvelous midday meal we had in this unpretentious Korean diner, and that's they best way to describe Chong's. Kay told me that she felt as if she was in someone's kitchen. I decided to go with something I've never had before; Bibimbap. For the uninitiated, it's just a mishmash of white rice, veggies, rubbed-down beef chunks, gochujang (red chili paste) and an egg (!) done over-easy in a large bowl. Johanna, who served us, explained the dish to me and even stirred it up for me before I dug in. It's not often that I feel love when I eat something in a restaurant, and that's what washed over me as this dish calmed my raging belly (we hadn't eaten all day!). I'm really learning to enjoy having egg in lunch and dinner entrees, and this only pushed egg further outside the breakfast box for me. Everything jammed together exquisitely, but the highlight was the delicately flavored beef. After finishing the bibimbap, I was told by Johanna that the meat is cut and spiced to order, depending on what the owner/cook thinks you might like or can handle. I wish I had watched her make the dish as Johanna's description of how it's prepared was somewhat arcane. Nevertheless, I could have easily put down another bowl and came very close to ordering another. Kay got the Bulgogi (sounds like a boss character from a video game, doesn't it?). At Chong's, Bulgogi is also offered as a sandwich, but Kay decided to keep it traditional, which meant it came with rice and kimchi. Our new friend also gave Kay a tutorial, and I of course got a taste. Her beef was seasoned in a similar way to mine. This was my first encounter with kimchi, and I found it to be the most beautifully fermented cabbage I've ever eaten. Chong's is the best (and only?) ethnic food on College Hill. It's located just across the street from Geneva College in Beaver Falls. Chong only has homemade signage in the windows, so you have to keep a sharp eye out as you're driving past. It helps to know that she's located right between Pizza Joe's and the College Hill Pharmacy. Chong runs the business mostly by herself. She makes friends easily and there are a few regulars who come in and help her out from time to time. I know that there are a few students who will wait on tables for her if they're around when Chong is in the kitchen. Plan on spending at least an hour if you come in to eat. If you call ahead, you can get your food started or have her get it ready for take out. I usually call ahead just to make sure she's open. The hours are usually 11-7 on Monday-Tuesday and Thursday -Saturday. She has been closed on Wednesdays. (If she changes her hours for this school year, I'll try to remember to come back here and make a note of it.) Her food is authentic, or so I'm told. I've never been to Korea. Whether it's truly authentic or not, I love it. I'm usually there for lunch once a week. My favorite dish is the Daegigogi: Korean barbecue pork. She offers it with a range of spiciness from 1-10 (a 7 makes my eyes water and my nose run, but isn't does burn too much. I like spicy food, but I don't like the heat to overwhelm the other flavors). She serves it with white rice and whatever vegetables she has on hand. Some days it's a cold pile of spinach marinated with vinegar and spices, other days I've received hot vegetables leftover from an order or bibinbap. She also offers the bbq pork as a sandwich: pork on a bed of the marinated spinach on an open-face hoagie roll that's been seared on the grill. Chong offers several kinds of kimchi, but it depends on what she has available. Sometimes it's cabbage, other times it's radish. I don't think it's traditional kimchi, because it hasn't fermented in a barrel underground. But it's spicy and delicious. Ginger melon tea is another of Chong's specialties. The melon is a small ball that looks much like a black olive. I've tried to find out more about it on the internet, but haven't found much. She simmers these little melons with ginger and other spices to make an amazing tea. She doesn't offer it in the hot fall or spring months, but it's amazing in the winter. It is not a fancy or highly decorated restaurant. It is just like one of korean diner place. Not expensive. The owner runs the whole show. She is very friendly. Since It is rare to see koreans in this western PA, she gave me a very warm welcome. I ordered bulgogi and kimchijjigae. I haven't had korean dishes for awhile, it was great to have them again. I just wish it was close to Butler, PA. Location wise, it is across from Geneva College. So it must have some regulars students coming pretty often. read more

One of the best feelings is getting served food out of love. As in, you're getting served a plate or bowl of whatever because someone loves food and (maybe) loves serving it to people. So you're not a dollar sign curled up in a booth; you're part of something bigger. This is a pretty rare thing that doesn't happen at a lot of restaurants. Chong's is one of these rare places that does this. The owner, who goes by Chong (that's not her real name), cooks because she loves to cook and loves to see people smile as they dig into something delicious. Hyperbole? It really isn't. Chong and her son have a ramshackle place that feels like it's been cobbled together out of five different restaurants. Tables don't match, and the place is a constant state of upkeep. (They're slowly trying to polish the place up....slow-ly.) Sometimes the place is packed. Other times, often during the summer, the place is empty, a shame since so many Beaver Countians pass by it every day without realizing it's there. But man, this food is out of this world. Dishes are colorful and flavorful, and the portions are insane. I almost always have to take stuff home, and that's fine by me--Korean food makes for a good next-day lunch. If you're not familiar with Korean cuisine, it isn't Americanized Chinese food. I've seen some people come in, sneer, and exit when they realize Chong's doesn't serve General Tso's. Their loss! Most of these dishes are served with rice or noodles, and Chong piles on the banchan (side dishes)--everything from kimchi to fermented herbs to savory pickled cucumbers (amazing on a hot summer day)! The Korean BBQ dishes in particular are a hit. They're surprisingly simple, too--some rice, marinated spinach, and a tower of awesome meat. Oh, and the sides. Mix 'em together or don't, you're getting some good grub. Jason's recommendation: the kimbap, a light (and cheap) seaweed wrapped roll that's a lot like sushi, just with steamed rice and sesame oil instead of vinegar rice. I can't really comment on the food since I chose not to try it after a very rude welcoming, so the 1 star is directed at the customer service and the rudeness of the owner. Mocking, making jokes at the expense of a potential customer, and immediately judging leaves one NOT wanting to try your food. It's a shame too because I personally love Korean food. But I couldn't justify or rationalize the extremely rude and judgmental greeting. I'm not one to walk out or leave a negative review very often (working in the human services field will do that), but this was the exception. Good food, really authentic, but really terrible service. I always get the bulgogi, which is exquisite, but wait a century to receive it. The owner gave my father a lecture about ordering food ahead of time, and that this is America and not Korea. I'm pretty sure that I already knew the second part, but didn't know that a sit-down restaurant required you to order a head of time, which is nonsense. So the only way I recommend you should eat there, is if you have at least 3 hrs of spare time. If not, I suggest looking up somewhere else, so I can only give it 2 stars read more

This is real authentic Korean food. I lived in South Korea for a year when I was in the service, and this brings you back good memories. The elderly woman who cooks is the owner and she also takes your order, and delivers. It's basically a one woman show. Occasionally her son will help her. She does like for you to call ahead with your order, even if you plan on eating it there. Once you sit down and order, it's up to you to get your drink out of the cooler if you want one. I love this place. It's always a treat! The first time I ate here, my brother recommended the taegi gogi (marinated pork). And until today, I have never been able to talk myself into ordering something else. Why switch it up when you've already tasted perfection?? I couldn't NOT order it. But today, I chose the pork bimimbap. And before anyone says anything, I know it's not all that much different. But different it was. And I danced in my seat while I ate it. FANTASTIC! Mrs. Chong continues to be the hardest working person in the restaurant business. Your palate will be tempted and teased and ultimately pleased by everything she makes. Be Patient! Mrs. Chong is the chef, wait staff, busser, dishwasher, hostess and bartender all rolled into one. We have eaten everything on the menu. We have been dining at the restaurant and taking out since 2011. I have eaten Korean food all across the USA and Mrs. Chong can cook with the best of them. Our favorites are #3 and #4 with a spice level between 5 and 7. If you go 8 or above be prepared: I have in the past, and do so at my own risk!
