I went for lunch on a Saturday. Getting there, you go up this long series of stairs. I got a regular soondoobu and galbi gui. It came with 3 side dishes of bean sprouts, kimchi, and broccoli. I quite liked each of the side dishes. The bean sprouts were soooo good! The soondoobu was very typical, slightly sweet, slightly spicy. I would like if there was a bit more soup and less things so I could put my rice in more. The galbi gui was very yummy and had a nice bbq flavor. I would say the portions are SMALL for the prices. I was very suprised when it came and the galbi was the side of my hand. The bowl for the tofu soup was also very small. For $26 and $18 respectively I thought it should be at least a little bigger. Sushi Kim's manages the remarkable feat of disappointing before the meal even begins. The restaurant is reached by a steep, narrow staircase, followed by a closed door that is awkward to navigate with strollers. We arrived with a 2 year old and newborn, and the entrance alone made it clear that families, older guests, and anyone with mobility limitations were not especially well considered. We chose Sushi Kim's for my wife's birthday because she loves Korean food, while I planned to order sushi. Upon arrival, however, we were informed that sushi was unavailable...an unfortunate surprise at a restaurant with "Sushi" in its name. The explanation became even more perplexing when another table was later served sushi after our order arrived at our table. Service was slow despite the dining room being nearly empty. Water arrived in plastic cups from what appeared to be a cheap reused plastic pitcher filled directly from the tap and stored in a refrigerator. (My wife actually saw them filling the just used pitchers in the visible bar area, no washing) The presentation felt less like a restaurant experience and more like something improvised in a break room. The food itself did little to redeem the evening. Portions were remarkably small, and my five foot tall, 100 lbs wife, who rarely leaves a restaurant hungry, did exactly that. At approximately $72, the meal represented poor value by any reasonable standard. What's worse is that is clearly frozen box food!!! The evening concluded with suggested gratuities of 18%, 20%, and 22%, which felt particularly tone deaf after slow service, limited menu availability, meager portions, and an overall lack of hospitality. Sushi Kim's may have history and loyal customers, but our experience was cramped, confusing, overpriced, and thoroughly underwhelming. A birthday dinner should feel memorable for the right reasons. Unfortunately, this one did not. Sushi Kim needs a rescue as they appear to have fallen in hard financial times and the reasons why appear obvious. read more

A gem of Pittsburgh that deserves a more prominent location, Sushi Kim 2 has a variety of Japanese and Korean dishes. This particular visit, these was only ramen and Korean fried chicken (owner assured me in a few weeks, the full menu would be back). Got the ramen and was pleasantly surprised - super rich and savory broth, pork cooked just tender and right, and lots of mushroomy-umami flavor to it too. They didn't miss. Happened to stumble upon this place after the 2 other places I typically go to for sushi in downtown were busy during lunch rush and I am so glad I stopped by! This place is definitely hidden, look for the sign outside and take the stairs inside to the right, it is located on top of the Mexican restaurant there as well. At the middle of the flight of stairs there is a sign that says Sushi Kim 2. Inside, you'll be greeted by their kind staff and I love supporting our locally owned businesses! Very spacious inside and can definitely accompany large groups. Since I was meeting with a friend during our lunch break we needed our meal to be less than an hour. Menu was very large and full of Korean dishes that sounded great! I'll have to come back for the kimchi jjigae. My friend and I ordered our sushi rolls and food was out pretty quickly. The salmon in my salmon avocado roll was very fresh and the portion was a lot! I was pleasantly surprised. Some of the best quality fish I've had in the area. I also ordered 2 sides of their house made kimchi and it was delicious - a perfect side to my sushi. This place is very unassuming but I love finding these small but awesome places. This appears to be a nice mom and pop Korean place. Given the quality of the reviews, I was expecting really great tasting food. But the food was just okay. I would rate it about 3.5 stars The sushi boat was pretty good. Some of the pieces of sashimi were pretty good, but nothing to write home about. It's a mom-and-pop style restaurant that serves both sushi and Korean food, and they do both really well (though I'm more biased towards the Korean food). It's hard to find good traditional Korean food in Pittsburgh. They serve all the classics, including manduguk (which is my all-time favorite dish to get here). The manduguk is seriously SO good. I'm not normally a huge fan of soup, but I literally got this every time I came here because it was that good. The flavor of the broth and the dumplings in it are just fantastic. It's a huge portion too. I also love their seafood pancakes, bulgogi, and soondubu. Their sushi is really fresh and they have a lot of set & a la carte options. The vibe inside is really peaceful and makes you feel like you're eating at a Korean grandmother's house. Cant recommend this place enough. It's such a hidden gem! read more

Don't be fooled by the humble looking stair case before the entrance. Everything about this place was fantastic. The sushi had amazing taste and each bite was full of fish. The salmon and yellowtail quality was very high. I even think they make their own spiced soy sauce. I sat at the sushi bar to wait for my take out and wished I could sit and stay longer! Delicious New Year's Day dinner at Sushi Kim 2! This was the only Korean restaurant open on New Year's Day that served duk man doo guk which I wanted to eat in honor of the holiday. The restaurant was located on the second floor of the building. Not sure if it had an elevator for handicap accessibility. The restaurant doesn't have a ton of seating but we were able to get a table without a wait. The wait staff were very welcoming and helpful! The atmosphere of the restaurant was also nice, they had a sushi bar where you could see the chef making the sushi too. Overall great experience and looking forward to coming back soon! However, it was a rainy day in pittsburgh and I was craving some strong flavors and soup, so I took my family to Sushi Kim 2! This place is one of my favorites because it is a locally-owned business and everyone in their makes you feel like family! My brother got the Unagi Donburi, which was absolutely delicious and the serving size was massive! My mom got the dumpling soup, which I didn't get to try but she really enjoyed! My dad got the fried rice, which he really liked! And I can't believe I forgot which of the soups I ordered, but it was incredibly flavorful and was served with house-made bon chon. Great sushi at a fair price. We had the Spicy Combo Roll as well as the 12pc combination sushi platter. The sushi was well prepared and everything you'd expect from a good sushi restaurant. I don't usually care too much about ambience, assuming the food is good, however in this case I felt between the lack of artwork, as well as the plastic disposable "party" cups it warranted a star being removed. I always go to Sushi Kim 2 at least once a month. It's always consistently good. My favorite thing to get there are the soups and the bimbimbap! For sushi, I usually get one of their combos and it comes with different sushis. The sushi chef who makes them is always consistent in how the sushi is made, always delicious.
