LA Gal Bi, rice and mandu
    Renzo M.

Probably won't make it back to this location. First didn't have many people inside at 7:30pm on. Friday night. But ok. So, when I went to order, I looked at the menu and the Gal Bi was $17.99 but then I was quickly told that that the menu prices aren't updated and it's $2 more. Ummm didn't like that but ok. So after i order the Gal Bi and The mandu it was over $30. What really that's crazy that's not $30 worth of food. And as you see I barely had any of the traditional Korean sides. Now I really really hated that. Ok the taste of the food. The Gal bi was pretty good. Nothing to really complain about. But nothing to highlight either. Also with the mandu it wasn't anything bright about it, just there. Didn't have enough sides to really judge them. So again I feel like I was robbed by the cost and the food that didn't stand out. Oh and the lack of sides (really upset me).

    Let's try this again

This is my second and LAST time here. Did not end up staying to eat. Not sure what happened to my first review... seems to be missing?? I was wanting Korean food and thought of giving this place a second try although our first experience was unsatisfactory. Today's near experience was even worse. Very disappointing. This lady runs her own restaurant by herself, which wouldn't be a problem except she is incapable of doing so. She is server and cook and the only customer service under the roof that I have witnessed during both visits. I came in at 1:59pm and with no one in sight, I went to the back, picked up a menu and sat myself at a table in the corner. I am dining solo today so there are 3 empty chairs at my table. With just a few patrons in there, end of the lunch rush and tons of available space, I opt for this table so I have ample space to place my purse down and the spread I am excitedly awaiting for lunch. Several minutes go by, I can see her moving about in the kitchen area. Shucks, I am getting concerned becs I really wanted a lunch special which the menu mentions ends at 2:00pm. Surely she'll be understanding. Right?! She finally comes out of the kitchen and noticed me. I smile. She calls out to me from across the dining room if I am dining alone. I say, "yes". She directs me to change tables so I am on one of those 2-seater tables which I find to be awkward. But ok, I get up and move myself allowing her comfort over mine. My culture and upbringing emphasizes respect to elders first and foremost. She walks over muttering something I cannot understand, I believe it was regarding a beverage that was not available today. No biggie. I ask her politely (fingers crossed behind my back) if I can still order a lunch special which is a smaller portion and according to the menu ranges from $9.99 to $10.99. It is now 2:05pm and says flatly, "no." I don't put up any argument or pleading, this is her establishment, I surrender immediately, but I am feeling defeated. I open up the menu again and ask for the same entree but dinner portion now $17.99. Ugh. She writes down my order and tells me that the actual price of the Gal bi is $19.99. WHAT?! She did this to us when we came the first time over a year ago but at that time, didn't mention any price difference and charged me anyway. I am done. I tell her "thank you, but I'm just gonna go." She curtly says "bye!", spins on her heel and stomps away. $20 bucks for my lunch that I drove over 20 minutes for with such a terrible lack of customer service? I can't do it. I am amazed that her business has lasted this long and that people actually spend their hard-earned money here! Must be due to terrible lack of options. I am mad, sad and hungry. Good grief. Jumping back on Yelp for more lunch suggestions. Super bummed. Stay away, my peeps. There are other, much more deserving businesses that would do so much better at earning and keeping your loyalty.

My cousin and I walked into this empty building that had one employee. The lady took our orders, cooked our meals and was also our waitress. Wow talk about multitasking. We tried ordering kimbap but the lady said they were all out of Ingredients so she suggested something else off their menu which was very nice. The ribs were so delicious and the beef bulgogi was sooo yummy as well. They only offer bottled water and can drinks which is ok. Place was small and fairly clean. The owner of the place stood by our table and chatted with us for a while telling us the story behind her business and ingredients she uses which was great. She was the sweetest lady.

Really good food, service was amazing. The owner is very kind. Nice hole in the wall place better than chain restaurants.

The other reviews with low ratings are valid!! Save your money and time and go elsewhere. When I came in it was a weekday around 5pm. No other customers were there. The owner greeted us and gave us menus. It was then I started looking up reviews on Yelp and another site. I saw the reviews said the food was mediocre and service was subpar. We were hungry but decided to share a "meal." We ordered ttoppoki. It was actually decent but too many onions and not enough ttoppoki noodles. Tap water was not an option. Bottled water is $1.75!! Total rip off and it's the Sam's brand. The place looked clean but definitely old. The lady was the only worker, so she took on host, server, cook, and cashier. I believe she is the owner. She wasn't overly friendly. The other reviews don't lie! I saw a few people come in for take out orders and the owner seemed short-tempered with them. One other couple dined when we were there and now I see why. Save your money and go elsewhere!

We both got their perfectly carmelized galbi/kalbi. Kimchee fried rice and as expected at all Korean restaurants - banchan

We've tried a handful of Korean restaurants in SATX, but this is by far the best one here. It is the closest to the taste of Korean cuisine we get in Hawaii. We've tried their bibimbap, bulgogi, kimchi fried rice and our favorite, kalbi. Their banchan, or side dishes, are always delicious. Just wished we could get more. I'm not a huge fan of kimchi, but I actually love their kimchi. It's in an odd place/location, but this hole-in-the-wall find will definitely satisfy your Korean BNQ cravings. Also, keep in mind it's not fast food and sometimes (usually) it's just Mama Chong cooking in the kitchen - but the wait is worth the food.

After having lived in Korea for a few years, we are always looking for Korean restaurants. Chong's is the real deal! Not DIY hibachi-style, but delicious. The owner is super sweet and greets, seats, cooks and servers. Reminded us very much of the local mom and pop restaurants in Korea. Soccer on the TV and yummy aromas coming from the kitchen. We order beef bulgogi, of course, bibimbop and kimchi sam gypsal (spicy pork belly). Dishes came with rice and sides. We enjoyed every morsel! Hot and fresh. Cucumber kimchi was especially good. Crispy with a salty finish. Needless to say, we will be back!!!

The place is cute and little, the food is yummy. The only thing is that it a one person show. The lady does everything by herself cook waitress cashier. So if your going to go make sure you have free time. This is real good Korean food. Definitely try this place out. The lady was nice and sweet.

What they call "LA Galbi" and banchan.
    Steve A.

I'd give this place a solid 4 stars. It's a great little mom and pop restaurant with decent Korean food. I came here based on yelp reviewers and was not disappointed. First, yes it's on the West side (OMG so scary) but it's right off 410, so you "urban tourists" can dine and hop right back on to 410 without getting shot (that is sarcasm by the way lest one take that comment literally). I grew up here and there's seriously nothing wrong with this area. In fact, I prefer it to the pretentiousness that automatically comes when you cross over to certain zip codes. In short, get over it. You'll be fine. Second, as others have mention, Chong's gets at least one star for being the one of the very few Korean joints on this side of town. Third (why am I enumerating my review? No idea but whatevs), I ordered the LA Galbi--or their version of Korean BBQ--and I thought it was decent. It's essentially meat, sliced thinly on the bone, marinated in goodness. In comparison to other Korean BBQ I've had, I thought it was just ok. My friend's Korean mother's marinade is probably the best I've ever had and this was somewhere in the ballpark which is to say that it was GOOD just not excellent. Fourth, I thought the banchan (side dishes that come with the meal--think of Spanish tapas) were your standard Korean fare. HOWEVER, I thought the kimchi was awesome. It was fresh and the flavor was on point. Fresh kimchi is my barometer for good Korean food. Chong's passed the test easily. Fifth, unlike some reviewers, I didn't think the price was outrageous. $15 for Korean BBQ is actually pretty good, or at the very least average based on my experience. In Michigan, I'd pay $20 for the same meal. I think where many people are going wrong is they're making a comparison with the many cheap Chinese restaurants we have around town so when they experience higher prices at a Korean joint, it causes some discomfort. It's not the same thing and the prices are not out of line. Moreover, many of the other dishes I glanced at hovered around the $10 range. This is NOT an expensive place to eat a meal people. Sixth, the portions are just fine. Not every place has to be an all you can eat buffet with unlimited portion size. Again, if you've ever been to a Korean joint in the US, Chong's portions are just fine and will definitely fill you up. In sum, my experience with Chong's was positive. I'll definitely be back for some bibimbop and galbi in the future. If you've only had sweet and sour chicken at your favorite Chinese restaurant your entire life and are looking for something different, you should try Korean cuisine because it's really tasty. And if you're on this side of town, you can't go wrong with Chong's.

THIS PLACE IS REALLY GOOD! GREAT SERVICE AS WELL!…read more Food: 4/5 The food has a great taste! I really loved the galbi, it was a little sweet but very good. The Banchan aren't what I'm used to, I guess I wish there was more variety. No rice paper, no radish, no mac salad, no potato salad...we did order the fried dumplings- they were good. Service: 5/5 They're very kind and attentive! The small group of women who run this place are doing a phenomenal job. All around:4/5. The plates are a bit small (I am a light eater and still found them not very big for the price) not ridiculously small, but on the smaller side. I am also used to Koreatown - Los Angeles Korean food which I feel is a league of its own (lol) so it's definitely hard for me to like just any Korean food. There were 7 different banchan options, and some were great while others were just okay. The fish cake and kimchi cucumbers were good, but others like the kimchi and the bean sprouts could have used more flavor. As an entree, I ordered the spicy tofu soup, but I wish it was a little spicier! The soup also had a stronger seafood/fish taste compared to other tofu soups I've had, which I didn't expect. The service was just okay, not rude but also not excessively nice. I liked how cozy the inside felt with the dim lighting!

Chas Market & Kitchen had been long on my list and since it was minutes away, seemed like the most logical choice. I have constantly heard people sing its praises. I will say I'm not versed in Korean fare. I had previously went to another Korean Restaurant and had a terrible experience. It is somewhere on the outskirts of the Eastside, alongside the highway. From the exterior it feels like a neighborhood convenient store. Once inside the room opens up with ample seating and tables. I noticed the tables that are specifically for their "All You Can Eat" menu but that's for another review. Along the walls are fridges with drinks and little knick knacks. It reminded me of a bodega. After we found a seat a server came and left menus. The menu is really extensive. I decided on their beef bulgogi, again a redo after the previous restaurant fiasco. A hip soundtrack is playing overhead, which I believe gives the place a modern vibe. Before I go on I must include that the server was excellent. I say this as he was very attentive but still able to work the rest of the room. Whenever I go to a new place sometimes I feel an anxiety. My fear is being disappointed and having wasted my time. But my impression is that it is an ultra laid back place. You can leave your Armani suit and Louboutin shoes at home. When the food came to the table it was served on a plate steaming similar to a fajita plancha. The server brought over accompanying small dishes that are meant to be added to the bulgogi. The small dishes contained: kimichi, spicy cucumbers, radish etc. Combining any or all with the dishes heightened the flavors. I think this was the most unique tasting thing I've had this year. In addition if you want a drink you have to choose one from their wall of fridges. I think this might dissuade some patrons but again, the overall experience is like that of a bodega. If you are looking for great Korean food with excellent service by all means go to Chas Market & Kitchen. So far this year this has been the restaurant with the most unique flavors. It is perfect for a date night, friends or with family. And I have to, have to absolutely do their "All You Can Eat" where you cook all items. I'm buying if someone else is doing the cooking.
