Upon coming into Orient restaurant, I was greeted promptly and seated down very quickly. It wasn't too packed, but it was busy. Every single time I heard the phone go off. It be about every five minutes. The food here is really good, kudos to the chef. Anything you get is probably really good. Kung Pao Chicken lunch set (medium spice) with potsticker as choice. Egg drop soup cup was fine if plain. The potstickers were good but nothing to write home about. The chicken however was perfectly cooked with good flavors. Probably one of the better Kung Pao chicken I've had. On the affordable side. Would eat again. WOW. I am really shocked at how much this place exceeded my expectations for Vietnamese food. specifically their bun rieu!!! I did not expect any Vietnamese restaurant by Seaside/Monterey to serve such a specialty dish, and not only serve it but even make it better than some places in San Jose which is known for Viet food. their portion sizes were very generous for the price. My bun rieu bowl was $14 for a small which was more like a regular size bowl. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone craving Vietnamese food in the area. Bonus: this restaurant is in the same plaza as Lynn's Arcade which is an amazing local pinball arcade. Very fun for a date idea :) read more

We stayed in Carmel for the weekend and had too much rich food, so we decided to cancel our fancy dinner reservation and get pho. It was just before 8pm and most places were closed, we arrived at Orient at 8:10 and they were kind enough to let us dine in (they close at 8:30). The service was very kind and super fast. The braised catfish was NOT worth $16. There was only 5 pieces of fish in a half filled container. The Crispy Spicy Beef was over cooked and over seasoned. The roast pork vermicelli noodles were OK. I can't believe I hadn't posted a review yet. As you'll see in a few of my reviews, whenever I move to a new area, at the top of my to-do list is to find my new favorite local Asian spot (usually Chinese) and Orient is it! They are a little pricier than I'm used to with much smaller portions than I've experienced in the past, but, it's still totally worth it. The food is cooked to order and always fresh and tasty! You can certainly tell that they are using quality ingredients. Just two days ago I had their wonton soup and it's the best wonton soup I've had to date. Everything tasted soo good. My go-to items on the menu are their bbq pork fried rice, salt n pepper shrimp (shell on) and crispy spicy seafood. I also note that whenever I pick up my food there's usually a few patrons in the dining area diligently working on cleaning their plates. read more

Ive been a regular for 16 years and we understand there is ownership change and due to inflation the new owner needed to increase the prices. However $8.99 egg fried rice becomes $13.99 for the same amout of portion is ridiculous. $9.99 small beef pho is now $13.99 and on top of that the pho broth is watered down alot. On top of all the price increase they charge 4% credit card fees. The food doesn't taste the same but you are paying 40-50% increase+ credit card fees. Every time we pass by the place looks empty and im sure they lost alot of regular customers. The new owners and people who work there are very nice but we won't be returning anymore. read more

Came here on my lunch and ordered the Beef Combination Pho and man, I was blasted away with superb flavor. The broth was perfect along with the noodles and meat. They have hoisin sauce, sriracha, chili crisp oil, and this very good green salsa type deal that made the soup absolutely POP. The Fresh Lemonade was really delicious and refreshing. You got me again, Orient restaurant! Looks like they've recently remodeled. The staff is SO incredibly happy and friendly and helpful. I can't say enough about how tasty their food is. Tried the orient chow mein, had bbq pork, shrimp and chicken in it... delicious! Of course for the dry mandarin wings again. New owners took over this restaurant and it was very apparent because they took down all the decor on the walls, everything was much brighter, and a new menu. The food was horrible and the service was even worse! The person I was with ordered the papaya salad and I ordered their kung pao seafood. I asked the old lady with glasses (who I believe is the new owner) who took our order if there were peanuts on the salad and kung pao. She said yes, so I told her no peanuts please on both dishes. I repeated myself twice to make sure too. Next thing you know both dishes came out with ALOT of peanuts on them... whatever we just took them off, but imagine if you had an allergy sheesh. Was going to let the lady know but she never came back.. she was busy talking to the table behind us, which I think was her friend? She kept going to them to chit-chat in their dialect and hug them while 75% of the restaurant was still full. Shoot even the table next to us ordered a sizzling rice soup, they brought out the soup, a few bowls, and a ladle to serve but didn't give them any spoons to eat! they were just sitting there waiting for the lady to stop talking to her friends and notice... There was another younger female there working and she was busy running the food and cleaning tables, while the older lady with glasses just kinda mingled with her friends whole time and only stopped to take orders and cash people out. Any who now on to the food, it was VERY bland, no flavor. My kung pao came out in a beige sauce and was sautee but there was absolutely no flavor... The portion of rice was small but didn't matter cause the food lacked any essence. The person I was with didn't finish their papaya salad either, they said it was not good and tasted off. Def will not go back again, I don't think this place will last if they keep this up and don't change their ways. We left super disappointed and still hungry. I honestly don't care how much I pay for food as long as it was good, but this place made me feel so much regret even though prices were around 16 - 25 a dish. A little hidden gem in Seaside, CA. This place is in a strip mall and tucked in the back of it. It is one of a handful of restaurants in this complex. However, it is worth checking out for their mix of Chinese and Vietnamese food offerings. I had the Pork Vermicelli and steamed pork buns on this visit from January. On this visit, it was not busy and the food came out in a reasonable amount of time. I hope to check out the rest of the menu. I was hugely disappointed, claimed to have Vietnamese Pho, it was to say just a large bowl of noodle soup. The broth was plain, only choice of beef offered was tasteless, no tripe, or choices of beef offered. I had no idea they were under new ownership until I started tasting the food because it wasn't good at all. I ordered an extra large beef combo pho and to be very honest the amount of meat and broth were for their smallest size. The tender shank was gross like it had been over cooked and frozen and pulled for daily use. The flavor was like watered down broth without a hint of pho flavor. I also ordered the imperial rolls and the peanut sauce they now use was disgustingly sweet. I was under the weather and looking forward to the comfort of some good soup.
