Living in the Chicago suburbs means we're spoiled with dining options, but Chop Shop Primehouse easily ranks among my top picks. It can be a little tricky to find, yet the reward is absolutely worth the journey. This is a small, intimate, uniquely designed steakhouse--zebra rug in the entry, artwork hung between booths for privacy, a cozy 10‑seat bar, thoughtful touches in the restrooms, and a staff that's as friendly as they are knowledgeable. Every detail feels intentional. From the moment you walk in to the moment you leave, you're taken care of by some of the best hospitality professionals around. A special shout‑out to Julianna, who handled our meal on this visit as well as the last--pleasant, kind, courteous, organized, deeply knowledgeable, and simply excellent at what she does. Now, the meal. I started with a Chopshop Old Fashioned made with Buffalo Trace bourbon, crafted by a skilled mixologist using a large square ice cube stamped with the restaurant's logo. One of the best Old Fashioneds I've had. Next came the Iceberg Salad--Danish blue cheese, confit tomato, lardon, and a soft egg, all resting on a blanket of blue cheese dressing. Unbelievably delicious, and easily enough for two. For my entrée, I ordered the Bakkafrost Scottish Salmon from the Faroe Islands (look it up--tucked between Iceland, Scotland, and Norway). It arrived glazed with bourbon apricot, paired with shallot gastrique, parsnip purée, spicy pecans, pork belly, and multicolored mini carrots. Every bite was a layered, balanced taste sensation. The sweetness of the salmon and glaze, combined with a touch of gastrique and parsnip purée, created pure gastronomic bliss. My date ordered the Meatloaf Wellington, made with house‑ground filet, puff pastry, duxelles, prosciutto, mashed potatoes, and bordelaise. You say meatloaf--I say filet. Absolutely delicious. Chop Shop Prime House is a nice, upscale steakhouse that feels almost unexpected. From the outside, you wouldn't anticipate stepping into such a modern, intimate space, but once inside, the vibe is warm, stylish, and perfect for a date night. Coming from a big city with no shortage of high-end steakhouses, I'm used to premium pricing. I wasn't expecting big-city prices in Holland, which was a bit surprising. That said, the food was overall very good, with the exception of two sides: the layered potatoes and the truffle risotto. The layered potatoes looked incredibly promising but unfortunately lacked seasoning and flavor, tasting more like plain potato than the indulgent side they appeared to be. The risotto was also underwhelming slightly bland, with a few hard pieces of rice. Everything else, however, was excellent. The Maryland-style crab cakes were a standout, easily some of the best I've had, with generous portions and great flavor. The salmon and filet were both perfectly cooked, juicy, and well-executed. Drinks: The margarita was spot-on, balanced, not too sour or too sweet. I also tried the in-house lemonade, which was quite bitter and not something I'd recommend. After reading reviews, we decided to give it a try. We went during Happy Hour and ate at the bar, ordered the burger with parmesan potatoes ($15) with an Old Fashioned. The burger was deliciously different, potatoes scrumptious, but that Old Fashioned - oh my - was absolutely perfect, best I've ever had. I saw he put it in the smoker, maybe that's the difference? Chop Shop Primehouse You can find this steakhouse at 1862 Ottawa Beach Road in Holland, MI. It's slightly hidden from the main road but they have pretty good signage for you to locate them. Upon arriving, we received a very warm welcome with our reservation. The space is small but absolutely beautiful. They have a dark and moody vibe that I really enjoy. Our server offered us the choice between sparkling or still which I find very fancy and was already so impressed. We started off by ordering some drinks. I really enjoyed the Chop Shop Old Fashioned. The square ice cube had a design in it and the flavor was just beyond delicious. It was difficult for me to not drink the entire glass in one go. I wanted to savor it. For a starter we ordered the Bread Service which has six housemate sourdough rolls with a herb fused beef tallow candle. This really wowed me and we had so much fun using the tallow as it melted on our fresh bread. I absolutely recommend you get the Bread Service if you come here! We ordered the filet mignon and the Delmonico steak! Both steaks were amazing, juicy, and flavorful! To go along with our steak we tried the Potato Dauphinoise. The layered potatoes with onion and garlic were just divine. 100% would order all of this again and again and again. To end the night we ordered the Chocolate Torte dessert which was the perfect amount of rich to go along with the dragonfruit sorbet on top! Chef Allen also added the Creme Brûlée for us which was so generous and the crack on top was just perfect! I have a soft spot for this place because it was my first dinner with my fiancé after we got engaged. It is VERY unassuming when you walk up, it is essentially a hole in the wall near a boating dock, not at all what you would expect from finer dining. The inside was nice though, very clean but very small and a little darker than we would've liked. We sat at the bar; the bartender was attentive, the drinks were good (I ordered a mocktail and my fiancé ordered wine). We got Brussels Sprouts for our appetizer--delicious. I ordered a filet with shrimp and he ordered a ribeye. The filet was pretty good. The shrimp weren't my favorite--they were pretty bland and not really hot enough for my liking. My fiancé's ribeye was pretty good. One thing I do want to point out was how weird the bathroom situation was. The men's bathroom was between the bar area and kitchen, which was fine. But the women's bathroom made me uncomfortable. It was at the end of a long, dark hallway, and when I went in, there was another entrance door right across from the door I went in. I didn't like the idea of there being two entrances to this bathroom, especially because I was so far away from the main restaurant. The bathroom was also very dark. It was clean, but I didn't like the setup of it, especially being basically in the middle of nowhere near a boat dock. If anything, I think the men's and women's restroom should be swapped. It feels weird to have women walk down this dark hallway with 2 entrances, although maybe there is a perfectly good reason for it. Overall, we enjoyed our experience but the food was nothing to write home about. Everything was solid, but maybe not quite worth the price point. If I could, I would probably give it a 3.7. We did enjoy that it was quiet and relaxing, so we were able to talk and visit easily. read more

Our table got the tommahawk and the delmonico is better. The beef tallow fries and our loaded baked potato and brussel sprouts were the best of the sides we ordered. Mashed potatoes were just meh. On the dessert side, only desert that's worth it is the carrot cake and it's excellent! Service was FANTASTIC!! Our waitress was so nice and professional. We visited for the first time last night and had an amazing experience. The cozy dark setting makes you feel like you are eating in your own special space. Very cool ambiance. The food was top notch. They had a great surf and turf plate that I wanted to try but we opted to go for filet since the steaks are what they're known for. Yes, the price is on the high side but these were better than other high end steak places that we've been to before. We also had the garlic mash potatoes which were excellent and served family style for sharing. We would highly recommend the bread service as well. Incredible! We went back, hat in hand and increasing to a 4 star review (from 3 star). Keep in mind, the first review was from the first week that they opened and I think the kinks hadn't yet been worked out. We made a last minute reservation tonight for a party of 5. We were seated immediately next to the bar with a wraparound booth and two cushy chairs on the bar side. Loved the ambiance and comfortable, roomy seating. We had the crab cake appetizer and shrimp cocktail. This time, the shrimp was perfectly cooked and in a different presentation than our last visit. The shrimp was crisp and delicious, the crab cake remained on point. Our party ordered the pesto pasta (one with chicken, one with lobster) the filet meatloaf, scallops, Brussels, frites, creamed corn and the 6 oz filet Oscar that was topped with crab, side of asparagus in a béarnaise sauce. The only item that we wouldn't order again were the frites because we hoped for skinnier French fry-like potatoes but these are more like wedges. Not for us but would be great for a lover of hearty potatoes. The food was all excellent. The restaurant wasn't busy on a Tuesday night. Our server was very friendly and polite but we did have to ask for drink refills often, rather than being asked if we needed anything. There were only a handful of other seated tables and we couldn't tell if she was the only server or if she just wasn't overly attentive. Either way, she was very pleasant. We did request boxes for half a filet and the unfinished Brussels and they brought us containers for us to put the leftovers in ourselves. I would recommend for a $450 meal that they box for their guests. Other than the boxing and light attentiveness, I would say that this was a fantastic meal and a great experience. Since this location was literally down the road from where we were staying, we chose it. The moment you walk through their doors, the atmosphere was very intimate and welcoming . Inconsistent. Our 1st visit in August 2025 was fantastic, from food to service. Our 2nd visit a month later, we ordered the exact same meal and had the same server. We arrived slightly early and sat at the bar. The bartender said something about reservations and we definitely didn't feel welcome, but she let us sit. Most of the bar remained open as we left for our dinner, so turns out we could have been welcomed to have a seat without bothering anyone. Ordered a glass of champagne and the bartender gave a short pour by about 2 ounces which was a bit disappointing. Unfortunately, I had to use the bathroom and it was FILTHY. Like this is probably a really bad sign filthy. Stuck it out to dinner and the bread service was excellent, as was the octopus, risotto was very bland with no mushroom or parmesan. The service had huge lag times and we waited quite a while for a bill. We were never asked how things were. We probably won't be back for a while, but may give it another try-hoping they are able to lock it down in terms of service, cleanliness, and food consistency. read more

Chop Shop Prime House is the fresh soul that now animates the body left behind by The Breakfast Joint. Same space, but totally new vibe. Chop Shop is owned and operated by the same folks behind Lolo's and Itty Bitty Bar. And given Bitty's tag as a five star dive bar, Chop Shop follows the same quirky suit. Who's Chop Shop for? It's for the eater who's jonesing for a Ruth's Chris steak and a cocktail, but wants to go straight from the beach, sunburned and still in their sand covered Jimmy Buffet flip flops (you can't do that at Ruth's Chris). Interior is swanky and industrial and cozy and casual all at once. Filets, strip steaks, and tomahawks are the stars here. I had the 16-oz Kansas City strip. Steak was thick and juicy and fired perfectly to mid rare. Added the manchego frites--hand cut potatoes with the skin still on, then fried, sprinkled with the 'chego, and served with a tasty aoli you'll want to drag each frite through. I paid through the nose, so this'll be for only the "specialest" of occasions, but the meal was nice. All sides are a la carte. Prices are what they are. It's a splurge to eat here. Leave the kids home. Better for intimate dinners than large groups. But, you can come as you are, bar tenders and servers are friendly, and they care about making sure you enjoy your visit. My wife and I sought a delicious and upscale meal to end the year with and Chop Shop Prime House delivered in spades. The restaurant has a unique location which is tricky to find in the dark, but we managed to find our way. Upon entering we were greeted by a hostess who asked for our reservation name and promptly showed us to our table. If you're looking for a private, quiet dining experience this is not it. However, the food, service, and wine were all excellent. The best we have had in Holland. We ordered the manchego frites, honey glazed carrots, and the 24 oz. cowboy cut ribeye and every bite was delectable. The number one complaint I usually have with food in the area is that it is woefully underseasoned. This was fortunately not the case at the Chop Shop. Due to the price of the food, we will only be dining here for special occasions, but in that regard there is nowhere else we will be making a reservation for on our special nights out. Leave the kids and any frugality at home and indulge in the finest dining experience possible in Holland. You won't regret it. read more

Strange little place off the beaten path by the harbor. The food was adequate and slighly overpriced for what it was. Our server was lights out incredible and the dirnks were highly inventive. I am unsure of this place's identity. On one hand they are striving for a high end food and dining experience complete with inflexible hosting and really expensive steak. However, the management seems wildly unprofessional and there is this an odd eclectic beach vibe art blended into a bar with a bunch of regulars. It felt like a yacht club where we were vistors. I will say the bread service is the best I have ever experienced. Go here for killer bread and drinks and expect to be treated like an outsider by the host and management. Hard pass. While the food was okay, the quality does not not stand up to a fine steakhouse, but this place didn't hesitate to charge the same. I asked for medium rare - it was medium at best. The oysters were not served properly and on a bed of purple ice?? The high top next to the service end of the bar and bathrooms was also a turn off. The staff needs more training in etiquette and personal space - one of the staff members (not our server) literally eavesdropped on our conversation and inquired for more info and the reached across my plate as I was eating to grab a hair (thankfully was mine - I think!). Unfortunately, prices are outrageous for the amount of food you are getting. The 32 oz Tomahawk was maybe 16 oz. Everything is a la carte and side dishes run $16-$20. They are supposed to serve 2 to 3 people. We ordered the Potato Dauphinoise - it was just ok and I could have eaten the whole dish by myself. Unless you are a little kid who doesn't eat much, the sides will not serve 2-3 people. The Brussels sprouts were good, but nothing outstanding. I don't mind spending money on food, if the food is good and the portions are worth it. If I can make it better at home, I don't see the point in going out to eat.
