We had to go around the block multiple times before we found a space behind the parking lot behind the restaurant. When we got into the restaurant was packed on a Tuesday night. There was a short waiting list that moved pretty quickly. The main reasons for going there was to try their James Beard award winning Trumpet burger. I also ordered an amber ale that was pretty good. It was good but coming from Chicago there are several burgers that I feel are better. Places like Au Chaval & Little Bad Wolf to name a few. My wife ordered a Mediterranean style pizza. Again coming from Chicago the pizza was very average. How can you compare this to Pequods or Lou Malnati? Hops draws a large crowd and really packs the people in. This place was much better than expected. It's located in downtown Holland, MI. The place is big and has plenty of seating. We ordered Brisket Tacos, Kids Spaghetti Pie & House Cut Fries, House Salad with Grilled Chicken, and a Kids Cheeseburger. We also received complimentary Beignets for our kids' birthday celebration. I stumbled across this place while planning our trip, and it did not disappoint. They offer a ton of gluten-free options that are clearly marked on their website and iPad-style menus. As someone with celiac disease, eating out can be stressful, but when I informed our server, he immediately reassured me that they take cross-contamination seriously and ensure a safe meal. While they do offer outdoor dining, we opted to sit inside, and the service and food were fantastic from start to finish. To drink, I started with the kiwi pineapple margarita--they offer multiple types of rims, and I went with sugar, which was delicious. The location is great, right downtown on 8th St. Service has always been excellent and food is even better now as I believe they changed their menu recently. This restaurant's manager tried to gaslight an old(er) man into believing Eagle Rare Rye was Eagle Rare Bourbon instead of paying for his staff's mistake! Here's the full story: My Dad loves his Bourbon. He ordered "Eagle Rare Bourbon neat" and specifically said, "not the Rye". Well when he takes his first sip, Dad immediately knows it is the Rye. Unfortunately, the waiter already walked away. He passed the glass around, and everyone at the table agreed to the best of their knowledge that it is a Rye. I've had both. It tastes like the Rye. When the waiter comes back, he apologies and goes back to get the Bourbon. This time, he comes back with a small tasting glass to make sure Dad wants the Bourbon. He drinks it, confirms this one is the Bourbon, and the waiter is on his way. So far, good customer service! Except, the waiter doesn't come back with the proper drink. Next, the manager comes back and explains he "watched the video footage and confirmed the bartender did not touch the Eagle Rare Rye bottle, therefore the original drink must be the Bourbon". Nope! No no no no no. My Dad tasted both, and they are definitely not from the same bottle! After the manager walked away, I smelled the empty tasting glass and the original Rye glass and 100% confirmed for myself that the liquor in each glass was different! You aren't going to gaslight my nose and my Dad's much more experienced taste buds! Either the manager was lying about reviewing video footage, he reviewed footage from the wrong timeframe, or the original Rye wasn't even from Eagle Rare but some other bottle the manager wasn't looking at. He did NOT confirm that the footage showed the bartender poring Eagle Rare Bourbon the first time. Anyways, we were too polite to make a fuss at the time, but I'm finally taking the time to write this review. Who reviews video footage (or worse, lies about doing so) over a single drink dispute? Who looks an old(er) man dead in the face and claims his taste buds are deceiving him? I'm very disappointed by the behavior of that manager. read more

I love old buildings and the history they invoke. When done right it's truly a top notch atmosphere and hops does it right. From the old brick walls that still have old advertisements on them to the tin ceiling it's just a pleasant environment. They have two long narrow rooms that were probably separate in the past, but combined they allow plenty of seating. I ordered the Pastrami on Rye ($18). This is House smoked brisket pastrami, Swiss cheese, grilled onion, house pickles, and rocket sauce on sourdough rye. It is delicious. Complex weave of flavors all coming together to be a heck of a sandwich. I really enjoyed the pickles on them. I only got the chips with them and they were ok, but nothing special. The person I was with ordered the Trumpet Burger ($), a 2019 James Beard Foundation Blended Burger Project Award Winner. This is a 70:30 grind of local brisket and Pebble Creek mushrooms, house bacon, Roelli Red Rock cheddar bleu, Gochujang pickled shallot, arugula, and duck mayo on a sesame seed bun. It was declared to be fantastic. I had some of the fries that came with it and they were very good. The service was excellent. Very efficient and friendly. Overall an easy 5 star review. Came here with my fiancé when Hollander was absolutely been popping for the Tulip festival. The wait was very long but we snagged two spots at the bar. Had a far 5 hour drive home so didn't get a beer. We got one of the new pizzas. I haven't been to many restaurants in Holland, so recently Nate and I met up with some friends at Hops 84 East at their recommendation. I was really happy with our visit - the menu is really large with some interesting items. It's a little bit of Asian fusion/new American with a chef-y twist. We were seated in the main dining area of the large restaurant and our server was really helpful with recommendations. We started with the honey whipped ricotta, which was creamy and delicious, with a bit of heat. I really liked the grilled bread that it came with, as it wasn't overly crunchy and had a nice grilled flavor. I'd get this again! For my entree, I was stuck between a couple options and our server recommended the Thai pasta salad. I added the fried chicken thighs for some protein. Nate got the fried chicken sandwich with hand cut fries. Our food didn't take too long to come out and the portions were generous. I loved the Thai pasta salad, with its creamy peanut dressing, springy udon noodles, and fresh veggies. I will actually try recreating this at home because I loved it so much. The crispy chicken thighs were perfectly fried and juicy. The only complaint I had was that I wished the broccoli was chopped a little smaller as it was raw, but overall it was a 5/5 for me. Nate loved his chicken sandwich. I had some of the fries, which were good, but a thicker hand cut than I typically prefer. I didn't get any dessert, but the ube cheesecake was calling me! So to preface my review - this is a 5 star for the type of food it is - more bar type food. We ordered a series of appetizers. Fried picked, pretzels and then the pizza to split among all 7 of us. Went with an old friend for a lunch meetup. We got there right at open and there's two big indoor sections for seating and a decent outdoor space as well but unfortunately it was going to rain. The service was fine I forget our girl but very friendly and courteous and offered up some suggestions when asked. It didn't take long for our food to come out (again might have been first order of the day) but wow. I got the Rueben and he ordered the meat pizza and boy were we pleased. The portion sizes were large but ultimately the flavor was amazing- definitely one of the best Rueben's I had and I got some extra sauce to dip in and the sauce was delicious with an extra kick. The energy around you pulls you right in. It's cozy and comfortable. I ordered the margarita flight at the bar, then our table was ready. It was worthy of another, that's for sure! Solid dinner outing at Hops right on 8th street. Samuel de Boer, Holland's most successful restaurateur, recommended and joined us (after we were sat), calling Hops "downtown's best bet." And yes, Samuel was spot on. We sat at an outside picnic bench to avoid/skip the 45 minute wait. And we're SO glad we did. If the food's on point, a casual atmosphere can be more fun.
