My Husband and I were in Holland for our Honeymoon and had been recommended Boatwerks by just about everyone we spoke to. We decided it would be our "fancy" dinner on our last night and were really excited. We arrived around 7pm and put in our name for a 45 minute wait, this we expected, especially as I asked to specifically sit on the patio if possible. We were even able to walk around the neighboring park and see the sun start to set on the water. We get our table and were greeted by our server right away and were able to get our drink and food orders in nice and quick. Drinks arrived in good time but that is where the positives end. After about 15 minutes we were brought appetizer plates but then didn't see the appetizer for another 30-40 minutes. The Calamari was overcooked, chewy, and topped with a singular drop of sauce. We hadn't seen our server for some time (as someone different delivered the plate) so my husband asked a busser nearby if he could bring us some more sauce and apologized for the inconvenience of apparently giving him a quest for the ages! Calamari was not sent back to the kitchen but we did just tell our server we were done after a few bites. Then came another 30-45 minute wait before our entrees arrived. My fish of the day, lightly crusted white fish, was tough and chewy and didn't taste as fresh as I would've expected from a restaurant on the water. (Only two bites each were stomached) my husband got the NY strip medium well. The steak arrived cold, no butter sauce or butter anything, practically grey all throughout. His first bite contained bone or something equally as hard on teeth and the bite I tried took me almost 5 minutes to chew and finish. Him being more of an optimist in the moment was willing to give the asparagus a try only to find them raw. (Again only two bites eaten) We're not the type of people to complain or demand a manager but it was then disappointing that our server took each dish back from obviously disappointed patrons and made no effort to correct. Nothing was discounted or comped and $120 later we find ourselves re-heating pizza in our hotel room at 11pm. We stopped in with friends for a late lunch (2:30pm, Sunday, 6/28/26). Outdoor seating was quite busy so we sat inside which wasn't that busy. The waitress was friendly and took our order but things started to go downhill when she only brought part of the drink order. We thought she would be back with the rest of the drinks. 20 mins later someone else brought our food to us. We asked this server for ketchup and more salad dressing. 15min later, still no drinks, ketchup, or salad dressing. I waved down a 3rd server and asked for these items only to be told she would get our server. Our server came, she brought ketchup for our now cold onion rings, and dressing. The missing drink still has not arrived nor did she check on us or offer to refill the water/ice teas that were on the table. I will say that the turkey sandwich I had was good however, the service was not. The place inside was not busy so I don't understand the reason for the poor service. I did pass the host stand on my way to the restroom, and there were about eight service people gathered around the host stand talking. The other issue I had was with the men's bathroom. The walls need to be washed as there's snot wiped on the walls and urine splatter everywhere and appears the walls have not been wiped down in sometime. The outdoor seating area is expansive and provides panoramic views of Lake Macatawa. It was a privilege to enjoy a beautiful late May day, dining al fresco, with a refreshing breeze. What a setting to enjoy some superb food. I opted for a vegetarian-friendly version of hot honey pizza. It was exquisite! The crust was crispy and flavorful. The mix of feta and honey was tantalizing, and when you add in fresh lake air, the meal was sublime. The Teriyaki Bowl was a rich mix of vegetables and protein, a large 6oz salmon piece. I truly cannot rave enough about this place. I am visiting from California and would like to visit each day of my visit to try a new dish and enjoy the stunning views. Service is friendly, helpful, and efficient. They take the time to answer questions and provide recommendations to enhance your dining experience. Boatwerks far exceeded my expectations. It has been a very long time since I have been to a restaurant and the server completely altered our experience. I asked could my toddlers food come out with the appetizer and her response was "if it's ready," as she shrugged her shoulders. I also asked would it be possible to do all strawberries for my toddler sided, so she doesn't waste the other fruit... Her response was that it already comes premade and they can't separate the fruit. As it was brought out to the table (as we can see in the picture) it separated. Lastly, Annie asked the other tables around us if they would like dessert... We were not offered dessert at all. I failed to mention that we came to this restaurant to celebrate my birthday as we are traveling out of town. We had a great experience with the other staff; from the host, other servers, to Grant (who ran our food out), to who I think was the manager on the floor. We always choose to be peaceful in the restaurant, so I chose to not speak to anyone in management. They offer a percentage off of your meal for your birthday with a valid ID. I was so frustrated that I did not even want to mention we were there celebrating. The restaurant was very nice and I love you have a beautiful view while dining. The food was eh. I very rarely give low ratings, but this experience likely deserves it. Let's start with the positives, it's in a great location up on the water and the service was fine. That was about where it ends. It took 1 hour for us to be seated which didn't bother us due to the nice location, but the food was not worth the wait. We got one of the pizzas and it was not good at all. I would say any fast food pizza is better, the bottom was wet and undercooked and it was almost impossible to eat. (Tasted better cold than hot). The drinks were disappointing, we had been to the sister restaurant in saugatuck and loved that so our expectations were definitely up there and it was just a major let down. The fish tacos were fine, nothing to write home about. Being the only place on the water should not be reason for such a lack luster experience. Frustrating... I love the location on the water. We have been here several times and always enjoyed a good to excellent experience. Not today - and a birthday no less. Simple ask - dressing on the side for entree salads. We ended up with fully and grossly overly dressed salads. Salad dressing was a very spicy ranch - like my wife could only stomach a few bites. Waiter was no where to be seen. Some random server plunked down the plates and dashed. When server finally did come back all he offered was 'kitchen always puts dressing on the side' and took away our plates. No attempt to remedy whatsoever. (let me be clear - neither me nor my wife will send back a plate. This review ONLY reflects the key lime pie. I read that this place had "house made" key lime pie, and didn't see it being sold anywhere else in Holland, so I went to try. The hosts said they were pretty sure it was not made in house, but said it was good. The pie was all I ordered, and it was one of the worst key lime pies I've ever had and no way tasted homemade (or "house made"). Barely 2/10 with almost no lime tart flavor. Just terrible... and it was almost $11 (before tip). Again, this is no way reflects any other food because I did not try anything else. If it is, in fact, made in house, they need a brand new scratch recipe. The freezer key lime pie at Kroger or Meijer is at least 60% better than this was. The staff was very friendly!! I had high hopes for this restaurant but it did not live up to my expectations unfortunately. The lake views were great but first I couldn't believe how hot it was inside. There was absolutely no air conditioning on inside and instead the large doors were open but it was very uncomfortable inside. No ceiling fans of any sort to move the hot stagnant indoor air around. I remember commenting on how I couldn't believe how the service staff were working in such hot conditions. So we sat outside and honestly it wasn't much better where we were seated as we were directly in the sun, but that is not the restaurants fault of course. It was just a hot muggy day. Then I went to use the restroom and it was so hot in there I could barely breathe!! And it smelled of urine and was very smelly and dirty. So then for dinner I ordered the New York Strip and my husband had the Sirloin which both came with garlic mashed potatoes and grilled asparagus. The steaks were supposed to be finished in a butter sauce according to the menu, but they definitely were not! Absolutely no butter flavor at all. And to add insult to injury there was absolutely no seasoning whatsoever on the steaks or in the garlic mashed potatoes which were disappointing as well. Then there was the poor pitiful grilled asparagus that was grilled and all shriveled up with you guessed it, no seasoning at all. Definitely not going back. Service was not bad though. Every one was very nice and respectful. So this place could really improve if you turn on the air conditioning inside so folks can eat in a comfortable environment or if it's too cold inside they can dine outside in the warm air. Also whoever is preparing the food needs to be trained on seasoning the food. I hate to be such a negative Nelly but I really did not have a pleasant experience during my visit. read more

Staff standing around talking, at least 10-12 staff on a large patio of which maybe six tables had customers. The sandwiches good but again not hot at all. Maybe the staff should be hanging out near the kitchen and not on the patio enjoying the sunshine. All of this could have been over looked until we were walking out. My spouse said I didn't think those onion rings were worth a $5.00 up charge. I said well they were $4.00 but I agreed since they were Luke warm. He disagreed and showed me the bill still in his hand. I then stopped at the desk and asked. Why was I charged $5 onion rings up charge when the menu said $4. Both girls said oh the burgers is the only sandwich with a $4.00 up charge every other sandwich pays $5. I said no,give me a menu and pointed to the picture enclosed. She continued to argue with me. Until I acted like a kindergarten teacher pointing word by word. She reply's oh it's a new system no apology , then said well what do you want? I said my dollar. Now she has to delete old bill redo new bill which she can't do. Goes in back room to complete this with a manager looking person with a Walkie talkie trailing behind her. He had been lurking nearby but never offered to help. This entire stop took over 5 minutes. The lakefront location can't be beat. We came at an off-hour for dining, about 3pm, so we were sat immediately. We asked for a table next to a window - initially we were led to a table in the center of the room, right next to another party- and after our hostess conferred with the wait staff, our request was granted. We enjoyed looking out at the water and people watching the customers on the patio as our meals were being prepared. I had a pretty tasty lobster roll, and they offer a small caesar salad as a side, which I prefer to the usual house salad, so that's a plus. Our waiter was friendly and seemed very experienced. For dinner I got the mahi mahi which came with coconut rice, chimichuri sauce and pineapple salsa. The mahi mahi was tender and smokey. The chimichuri provided just the right amount of heat and the coconut rice was the perfect flavor carrier.
