We came to Chophouse 285 on Friday night with high hopes after hearing so many positive things, but all three of us left incredibly disappointed. Our experience started on the wrong foot. We had a 6:30 PM reservation and weren't seated until 6:50 PM. In the grand scheme of things, a 20-minute wait isn't a massive deal, but the problem was the attitude. No one acknowledged the delay, no one apologized, and the staff at the front just seemed very standoffish about it. Unfortunately, the food and drinks didn't make up for the greeting: The Drinks: They were just "blah"--definitely not stellar or worth chophouse prices. The Soup: The potato soup tasted old and had a weird, chalky texture. The Salad Situation: They don't offer a side salad with your meal. Instead, you're forced to buy a $25 salad to split with the table. That would be fine if all their sides were shareable, but they offer individual sides too. Not having an individual side salad option at a steakhouse is a bizarre choice. The Steak: This was the biggest letdown. We ordered it medium, and it came out wildly raw. To make matters worse, it took our server forever to check back in on us. By the time they did, the rest of the table had finished eating, so the moment had passed to send it back. The only saving graces were that our server was actually quite attentive and nice overall, and the pasta Bolognese we ordered was really good. But for a premium steak restaurant, a good pasta dish and a decent server aren't enough to save a night of poorly cooked steak, chalky soup, and subpar hospitality. read more

Wasted potential. The idea of this place is fantastic. The execution is poor. They're dry aging Prime steaks, which is a wonderful thing. You can see the dry ager, which also a wonderful thing. You can watch the grill...also wonderful. So what's the problem? They don't know what they're doing. I don't want to say these steaks aren't Prime, but if they are, they're from the discount bin that are barely classified as Prime. I don't even care if they're Prime or Choice...just don't charge me like they are. $84 for an 18-20 oz 40-day dry aged cowboy ribeye is not a bad price. But when I question whether it's Prime and whether it's actually 40 days dry aged...you've got a problem. It didn't look or taste like either. And it was cut probably 3/4 to barely an inch thick. Combine that with a good amount of gristle and I was still starving. And, no, I don't mean the delicious rendered fat that comes with a great ribeye. The real problem with the steak is that it wasn't seasoned AT ALL. I couldn't taste a single morsel of salt on the steak and this place thinks they're a steakhouse. I also have to point out the complete cross-contamination on the grill. To someone with a shellfish allergy, this could be a death wish. You don't cook fish and meat in the same place on a grill. That's grilling 101. How do I know they did? You can literally watch them grill from a foot away...could be cool if safe food handling was being practiced. The final issue with the steak is that it was completely undercooked. I ordered medium rare and got a mostly very rare to raw steak. A thermometer would have put this steak at 110° in most places. Since it was dry aged, it was still tender so not a problem. But if you're going to charge me $80+...you better bring your game and know how to cook a steak. Long story short...skip the steak. They don't taste like Prime. They don't taste like 30+ days dry aged. They don't season them. And they cook them on grill where you get the taste of everything but the steak. If you like a weird, thin, tangy, undercooked steak - get the steak and pay $80+ for it. Let's take a look at the sides. The asparagus...absolutely horrible and inedible. It was crunchy...not in the good way, the undercooked way. And it tasted like they cooked it in the grill ashes and put it on top of a burnt, gross green sauce I can't even explain. It was so smokey in a bad way, like burnt and carcinogenic. I love asparagus and couldn't eat it. It was the worse part of the meal. Do not get the asparagus. I also don't recommend the sweet potato "casserole." Nothing about this side is a casserole. It's stringy, canned sweet potato with bland seasoning and topped with chopped nuts (not mentioned in the menu, so not allergies be ware). The appetizer we had were the Johnny Cake Potstickers. Neither Johnny Cakes, nor a Potsticker. Just weird. Not bad, but definitely not good. I honestly don't know why they would put this on the menu. Just odd. So why even give this place 2 stars? The atmosphere is ok. It's an interesting place, but with weird sight lines that mirror a cafeteria turned Benihana. But it could be fun at the right time of year. The bartenders were really wonderful. Daniel made it a great experience and knows what he's doing. The other girl was wonderful too. I forgot her name. She's from Boston...I won't hold that against her. Daniel might be from Boston too, but don't let that turn you off. The drinks are actually quite good...aside from the lack of transparency on the pricing. I have never looked at a cocktail menu to see absolutely no pricing. Not a single martini or cocktail has a price listed. That's a real problem. My overall feeling is that this place has a lack of desire to serve quality food. All the elements are there for an awesome steakhouse in an unexpected location. One that actually dry ages their Prime meat and puts their grill and dry ager on display. The issue is an overlying ego thinking that high prices equal high quality. I told a manager everything was "eh, ok" and she walked away. That's all they care to deliver. read more

Chophouse 285 is such a beautiful new spot in Englewood, and it honestly feels like such a refreshing addition to the area. The ambience and decor are stunning! It actually feels like somewhere you'd go for a special occasion or just a night to get dressed up and enjoy a really good steak and something a little more elevated than the typical fried food or burgers in town. Don't get me wrong, I love my favorite beach town and local dives/happy hours, but this is such a nice change! We started with the shrimp ceviche and it was so good, fresh with a little sweetness and perfectly citrusy. We also tried the Huckleberry burger, the filet and lobster tail special, and the pistachio-crusted sea bass, and everything was delicious. The sea bass especially stood out with such a nice texture crust and flavor. The only thing I wish is that they had their homemade pastas with a red based/marinara sauce, but that is a very small thing. What came was a single pork chop (See Photo). when I asked the floor supervisor why it only came with one bone., said she had to talk to the kitchen because she did not know. She came back and told me the kitchen said that's how they cut the double pork chop I'm all my years of being in the restaurant business I've never seen a single bone in called a double pork. They either need to change how they cut the pork chops or change the description. I realize if they just opened up five weeks ago and there's still a lot of service training needed. One last note. However this restaurant does not seem to understand how to make their loyal customers feel special. We, a party of 5, had a reservation at 7:30 , did not get seated until 8:30 while we watched many others arriving after us get seated before us. We were seated in a comfortable booth in a great location, which set the tone for a relaxed and enjoyable evening. Our server, Maggie, was hands down the best we've had in Florida. She had such a warm, genuine personality, gave excellent recommendations, and went above and beyond to make the night special. We started with the bread service and the Krab Rangoon (per her recommendation), and both were absolutely delicious. Where at the first visit our server didn't seem to know the answer but tried to answer anyway, and the second was confident in her answers and it showed. Let's start with the positive . The food was good, not exceptional, not memorable. Nothing out of the ordinary. Review goes downhill from there. Let's start with the fact that we went in there 3 weeks ago to make the resevation. Specifically mentioned that it was my 70th birthday and that my daughters were flying in to celebrate me. We asked for a certain section and were told they could accommodate us. We were very excited to try this new restaurant. Fast forward, we were placed at the worst table in the restaurant, right by the access to the kitchen. We complained and they actually moved another couple to our table and moved us to the area we requested, which was incredibly awkward and uncomfortable for both parties. We were then told there was no guarantee that they could honor the request for the area we wanted....what's the point of making reservation in advance? Fast forward to the dining experience, the service was lousy!!! Ordered bread, which took almost 45 minutes to get. Appetizer came before the bread!! Our steaks were placed in front of the wrong people and our table was never bused. And the waiter for the most part disappeared. As a matter of fact, we weren't asked if we wanted wine or a second drink until halfway through our meal. Limited acknowledgment of my birthday, and while not expected, no comp desert or anything. The server we had was ok - no personality and very monotone. A few things that stuck out. We ordered our steaks and had to get a menu to point at how we wanted them cooked. She said it is to prevent cooking issues. Just odd. We started with the escargot and the mushroom brushetta. The brushetta was one of my favorite things I have had in a very long time. The escargot was okay. The presentation was bad - some pieces had zero sauce. We ordered the filet and the wagyu flat iron steak. I have been eating wagyu iron steak for years, as it is delicious and tender. My steak came out and it tasted burnt. Not overcooked, but actually burnt. I told my waitress and she had the manager come over. The manager told me that is how flat iron steaks are all cooked. I said burnt? She said that is how they are cooked. I explained I order this at other restaurants and just had one at Prime Serious and it has never tasted burnt. She told me she can get me another one but it will taste the same or I can get the other wagyu steak if I didn't want it to taste like that. To which, I said fine, which cost me another $20. It isn't about the money, but I should not have to pay more money so my steak doesn't take burnt. The whole experience left a sour taste. I don't think I will be returning any time soon. read more

We went back with friends a few days later on Super Bowl Sunday. I had a burger and was very good and the tots again which are yummy. Our friends got chicken empanadas and the mushroom appetizer. They liked the mushroom better than the empanadas. Overall a good experience so I upped the rating. We will go back for lunch or when we're in the mood again for a nice date night. The meatballs were outstanding and one of the standout dishes from the meal. For entrees we got dry aged ribeyes and wagyu manhattan strips. Salt was a plastic salt grinder, like you'd find in the grocery store and not served with a $150 steak (which shouldn't have even been needed). Leftovers are packaged in styrofoam...which also doesn't scream "steak house"...especially at the price point. Today was suppose to be a day of celebration, however it turned out to be one of the worst restaurant experiences I've ever had. It was a slow Sunday afternoon and the restaurants not busy, less than a quarter of their capacity. We had a reservation for 10 people. I let the hostess know that we were here, about 10 minutes before our actual reservation. The hostess told us that she needed to get the table ready. When should took us over, she seated us at a table for 8, set up with 8 place settings. I mentioned to her that we were missing some seats. she told us that this was the biggest table they had and walked away. We squeeze 6 people into the half booth portion of the table. Twenty minutes went by...we waited and kept looking at the menu, while 8 people drank water. Our waiter showed up and said "so you're all good with just water?" No hello my name is, what can I get you or anything. We all looked at him completely stunned. I told him no, that we wanted to order drinks and that 2 of us were never even given a glass for water. Without saying a word he stormed off in a huff, then cam back with 2 glasses. He took our drink orders. He brought them back, and fortunately only one was wrong, she asked for a glass of Rose' and he brought her an individual bottle of champagne. He didn't even open it, just put it down on the table and walked away. Fifteen minutes later he still hadn't returned. We had been sitting here at this point for 40 minutes. One of the ladies in our party stopped him and asked if he could take our orders. His response to her "Sure. Go". She asked him a question about something on the menu, and his response was rather inappropriate and unprofessional. Everyone at the table heard it. Again, we al just sat there in complete disbelief. He took everyone's orders and as soon as I gave him mine, I went and found the manager. She removed him as our server and sent over one of the bartenders to help us. Service was fine after he was gone expect we had to ask 4 different people to bring utensils and napkins for the 2 people still sitting there without (remember table of 10 only set for 8) Was my food great..well I wish I could say yes. Four of us got the steak salad with cherries and faro. No one could find any faro in their salads and each of us only had 1 or 2 cherries in the salad. Between the seven cherries we got between the 4 of us, they all still had the stem attached and 1 still had the pit inside. My spinach was free and the steak, though improperly cooked wasn't the worst I have had. The people with burgers seemed to fare far better as did the 2 who ordered salmon. The mussels on the last dish, not the best. For a restaurant that has been open for several months a who's owners have other really well run restaurants in the area, this was just a sad experience. read more

My wife and I were excited to try this place as a dedicated steakhouse is long overdue for the Englewwod area. We chose to wait to allow the establishment adequate time to work out the deficiencies of a newly opened restaurant. The food was subpar on all levels. My $85 porterhouse steak was thin and chewy. I suspect the beef was of "choice" grade and not "prime". The side dishes were equally expensive and lacked proportion size considering the expensive cost. We each had one drink and no desserts. Our bill with tip was $241. We will not be returning and will continue to spend our money at Prime Steakhouse. We expected much more from the Farlows establishment ownership. read more

As locals here in Englewood, my best friend and I decided to visit the Chop House on Dearborn. We were seated quickly; it was Saturday afternoon, but getting someone to our table was a chore. The dining room was quite empty, and I still had to call for wait help. We had the Onion rings with a dipping sauce, we had to wait 15min to get dipping sauce. The onion rings were not what one expects, hard, and had to cut with a knife. Main lunch Poke, I am from Hawaii, and my rendition of Poke is quite different. The rice paper shell was nice, but the fish and sauce were mediocre. I ate the shell, and they never offered chopsticks for the Poke. (wild) My guest had to wait 30min for a beer and then was never asked to refill nor was I on my soda water.
