Everything about our experience was absolutely perfect. We came for our anniversary and had made a reservation. From start to finish, the customer service was top tier. Our table was decorated with flower petals and a note saying happy anniversary. The food was fantastic and our waitress was great. And to end the meal, we ordered a dessert and it was brought out with a sparkler to celebrate. I feel they went above and beyond to help us celebrate. My husband and I had a free evening and so we went to Choplin's for dinner primarily because of favorable reviews. It's located in a strip mall, which is fine. But we arrived to a swath of wet and matted red carpet with a pair of mismatched rope chains in the parking lot at the entrance, which was pretty tacky. Inside the walls were black and there were chandeliers hanging from a dropped ceiling and prints of famous paintings scattered throughout. We were seated at the table and there were sofas on either side. They were incredibly low (I am very tall) and so I awkwardly fell onto my sofa, thinking it was grown up height, and the table edge was about 7-8 inches below my chin which made me feel like a child. Using utensils was very difficult due to having to reach up. We ordered the crab meat appetizer and it was brought very quickly. There was meat visibly in it, but we could not taste crab flavor. All I could taste was cream cheese and we pushed aside whatever melted slab of cheese was on top. We ate less than 1/4 of it. Our waitress took our meal order during the appetizer and it took about an hour for them to arrive at the table. I had the duck which was pretty good and my husband had chicken marsala which was also average. The odd thing about the duck... the menu states 1/2 roasted duck and so I assumed some breast and a thigh/leg. I ordered it because I love duck breast, but it arrived and there were two thing/legs. I suppose it did not specify which half of the bird is used, but I was surprised to just get the bottom half! All throughout, there was a manager/hostess hurriedly running back and forth around the place, and servers were rolling their eyes at her, creating a level of stress to the ambiance. When it was finally time to get the check, I noticed they charged for two of those horrid crab appetizers. Frankly, the prices indicate a higher quality of food, service and ambiance. And the food was slamming. 4 oz. filet mignon medallions and grilled halibut in some kind of vegetable roux (think that's what they call it), fried brussels w/some kinda of caramelized glaze and blue cheese crumbles. I forget what was in the cocktail other than OJ but it was solid. It was so good I felt (slightly) guilty about the Groupon (but get it before it's gone)! Our server was attentive and the manager supplemented well, checking on folks when the server was away. Nice atmosphere, kinda dimly lit-it's a good date option. Obviously if you're in certain parts of Charlotte it's a hump to get this spot off hidden up in the cut off 77 in Cornelius-but it was worth it. Made same day reservation via OpenTable. Arrived 5 minutes before reservation to be told 'we don't have control of OpenTable.' What? 'We will still honor your reservation, but there will be a 30 minute wait.' Ok...odd but doable. Go outside in the 'outdoor patio' (parking space) and overhear two other groups talking about having same experience and one had been waiting 70 minutes and the other 45. Unorganized. Misleading. If you need a "nice dinner" spot for a date night or to host company/friends, I highly recommend Choplin's. It might be in the most unassuming location but the food and service are top notch. Reservations are highly recommended. We were able to snag one of 4 seats at the bar on our last visit but that is a rare opening for a last minute dinner decision. They also have a side room for groups, if you need a spot for a dinner party. We have had Thanksgiving dinner in the past which was a massive buffet with all the options. It was so good and I didn't have to cook. On non-holiday visits, we like the Brussel sprout appetizer, the scallops entree, the salmon entree, the Southern-style lunch menu with daily specials, and anything on their homemade dessert board. The portions are huge! You definitely get your money's worth and it's great to enjoy a second meal. On our last visit we got dessert to go and took it next door to Lost Worlds Brewing to continue the evening of fun. It was a great decision and I highly recommend it. We recently ate at Choplin's for the second and last time. They were clearly over booked as they told us we had to wait even though we had a reservation. They said they didn't have a two top available. When I made a complaint, we were magically seated at a 4 top table. From the start, our waitress acted like she couldn't be bothered. We ordered drinks and looked over the menu. Next we had salads that were awful. Who serves romaine lettuce with the ends still on them?? So gross! Little to no ingredients or dressing. Needless to say, we wasted good money on salads that were inedible. My husband ordered the salmon and it was served with box grade tumeric rice and some over seasoned green beans. He said the salmon was ok, not mind blowing. I ordered the filet and it was cooked to my liking, but that was about it. Bland is an understatement. No seasoning at all. My sides were the same over seasoned green beans and some box grade scalloped potatoes. For $200 dollars we expected a much better experience. We will save our money and go to the many other excellent restaurants in and around the area. We also had several people bring out things that we didn't order and belonged to other tables. I came across this restaurant on Yelp and wanted to try it after seeing the pictures and good reviews. The restaurant is located in a shopping plaza so it does not seem as nice as it is inside. The restaurant was dimly lit and had dinner tables and booths inside. The restaurant is not huge but it was a nice size. There was a nice waiting area near the front door and check in desk. We made a reservation for a Friday evening at 5:30 and were one of the first people to be seated once we arrived. By the time that we left, the restaurant was pretty packed. Our server came over & explained that the menu is changed weekly and told us the chef's favorites. We ended up getting the crab & spinach fondue for our appetizer. You can get the fondue for free if you check in and order an entree. The fondue was really good and was served with warm bread. For dinner, I opted for the lamb lollipops. I was served two lollipops with a spinach almond pesto and a balsamic demi glaze. They were tender and were served with Yukon mashed potatoes and vegetables. My meal was really good. Choplin's has become one of our favorite spots for fine dining! We've been here several times already and have not been disappointed with our experience! Our most recent visit was for our 4th wedding anniversary. When I made the reservation online, I let them know my wife and I were celebrating this occasion. When we got there, we were pleasantly surprised that they seated us at their VIP table (a cozy little booth that provides the maximum privacy possible within the restaurant)! On top of that, they hung a mistletoe over our table to go with our celebration of love. We ordered the brussel sprouts as an appetizer and they are REALLY GOOD!! They came out crispy and warm, and they taste really good. They definitely do not disappoint! We ended up taking half of it home bc they give such a big portion (it could easily be shared amongst 4 people). My wife ONLY orders their salmon dish and substitutes the rice for the mashed potatoes. The orange sauce that they use in that dish is DEEE-LISH!! It's so good that she can't bring herself to order anything else! I, on the other hand, like trying different things. I've had 3 different main courses over the times we've been here, which include the Crackling Duck, the Ribeye steak, and the Lamb Lollipops, which are my FAVORITE!! The tenderness and the seasoning of the lamb, the creaminess of the mashed potatoes, and the flavor of the vegetables make this dish my go-to!! We called Choplin's for reservations since they did not have a reservation service but only got an answering machine. We left a message but no one return our call. We actually arrived early for dinner around 6:00 pm. There was hardly anyone there. I had high hopes for this restaurant even when I saw the health grade at 93%. The interior seemed cute and it had a cute theme with pictures of Marilyn Monroe but would soon find out that their food was very disappointing. The menu was pricey with steaks starting at $50.00. We waited an hour and a half for our dinner. I ordered my steak "medium" and thought it was weird when I cut into the filet and noticed that my knife would not cut into it...it was raw. Not only my steak, but everyone's steak was raw. Now I don't mind a steak with some good bloody juices from time to time, but not stretchy raw and un-chewable. The hostess was so sweet and kind to give some local recommendations on how to visit the surrounding lake Norman area before dinner to kill time. The restaurant is dimly lit with white table paper- intimate and classy touch. We were offered some bread and our server brought two wine tastes to go with my seabass. I went with the buttery Chardonnay-it was so good. My blackened seabass was crispy on the outside and nice and soft and flaked with my fork. I loved the creamy and rich lobster Madeira sauce. The substituted veggies went well with my dish also! My boyfriend liked his ribeye but it was low on extra flavor - can go in two directions depending on how you like your steaks seasoned. The baileys chocolate cake was rich with a creamy baileys flavor and had a nice little crunch with the chocolate chips-highly recommend and I typically don't love chocolate. Truly a heavenly experience with food & wine! The beef medallions with lobster tail entree is absolutely stellar. The creme brûlée is generously sized for 2 to share. I chose this place based on another yelp review. I'm happy with my decision. This restaurant was the perfect place to celebrate my daughter's birthday. Our food and service were memorable. The is clean. They have a 98.5 sanitation grade. It is also elegant and cozy. They have done a great job of transforming a banal strip shopping center unit into a beautifully accessorized dining location. As soon as we were seated our server was there. She introduced herself as, Elizabeth, and said "I'll be taking care of you tonight" and that she did. She knew the menu and was able to answer every question we presented her. She even knew the drink menu by heart. We never wanted for anything. She was unobtrusively present the entire night. The food experience began with an appetizer of crab dip and baguette slices. It was really good and it was just enough for the entire table to have a few slices of bread dip. I ordered scallops and exchanged the rice for mashed potatoes. The scallops were cooked perfectly (I am picky about my scallops.) My son ordered a bowl of French onion soup that was good. He also ordered an 8oz fillet mignon that was cooked perfectly. My daughter's chicken was really good and had a Marsala sauce on it that made the entire plate delicious. A friend eating with us ordered beef medallions. This dish was more elevated that it sounds. This was my second choice. I tasted it and it was superb. The cocktails were good. My daughter ordered a signature cocktail called "The Chef's Kiss" that she enjoyed. My date ordered the Cary Grant which was a chocolate drink that reminds of a Bushwacker or a Mudslide. It came in a Martini glass. It was pretty and tasty! Our entire night was special. Went here for an anniversary dinner with my wife. We ordered French onion soup and baked oysters for apps. Dinner was fruit of the sea (lobster tails shrimp scallops and fish over linguine in a red sauce) and tenderloin medallions with mash potatoes Pros The host and server were very friendly Where we were seated was very intimate. Nice for an anniversary dinner. The French onion soup was delicious. The red sauce in the fruit of the sea was very good. If you like very hot (temp) food then this is the place. Cons 1st let me say to be fair there was a big party in the restaurant but there were also empty tables. We did also tell the server we were in no hurry It took 15 minutes to get our drink order and 45 minutes to get our apps. We placed our dinner order as soon as the apps arrived and that took another 35 minutes to arrive. The baked oysters had 5 shells but only 3 oysters and the entire order was severely over cooked to the point of being burnt. The fruit of the sea had no shrimp and the scallops were 1 or 2 sea scallops in total cut into 1/4" slices. The lobster tails (2) were frozen tails overcooked so badly to be rubber. The mashed potatoes looked to be reheated with well overcooked vegatables mixed in. Totl cost before tip was $180. It's tIme for an updated Choplin's review and Chef Wes and crew are once again up to the 5 Star task. According to check-in's I'm at 16 visits over the years with the most recent coming this weekend on a kind of spur of the moment, "Honey what do you feel like eating" moment. I'm an absolute sucker for their Bourbon French Onion soup which is a menu staple but this visit was intrigued by the lobster bisque which I'd never seen available before. What a nice change-up! This was by far the best lobster bisque I've had recently and I've had it from Ruth's Chris, Capital Grille and Alton's over the past 6 months or so. Let's just say those others are lacking big time vs. the flavor Chef was able to deliver. I tried a steak cut I'd never heard of and again was glad I did. A "Times Square" striploin. It was about a 2 inch thick rectangle of perfect medium rare goodness. So tender and flavorful. The side was scalloped potatoes that are again a Choplin's standard and absolutely creamy and delicious. My wife had the mussels app as her dinner. They were served in a "please soak me up with bread" tomato sauce and, we did as ordered. Most of the servers have been there for years and are quick with a smile, friendly banter and go out of their way to make regulars and new diners alike feel comfortable. The menu has a lot of rotating standards and many changing, what's fresh today, options and in my opinion, it really does not matter what you order as Wes will bring it forth with great flavor. if you don't see it on the menu just ask and it's likely something that suits you can be whipped up. Saw it in action on this visit as a customer a table over was Vegan and before we left, I saw him eating his meal and looking happy doing it. Choplin's has been my favorite 'expensive' restaurant in the area...until last night. Door was locked when we arrived at 5:30. A staff member unlocked and seated us. I had to leave my coat on, as it was quite chilly inside. The grilled Romaine salad was nothing special-a bit bland. We ordered the seafood pasta; and it was drowning in sauce. Another dish was the sea bass-it too, was covered up in sauce. It didn't have much flavor either. Felt like we ordered expensive food in a diner, for the quality of our food. On a positive note, our server was attentive; however he asked twice, if our dishes were, 'perfect.' He appeared surprised when I responded, that it was, 'good.'(It actually wasn't) One would have thought that he would ask if there was a problem, but he went on to serve his other tables.Way too much money for below average food last night. Our server was Elizabeth. There are not enough positive adjectives to describe her. Friendly, Sweet, Patient, Knowledgeable and Engaging but not overly chatty. I haven't even gotten to the food yet y'all. The ambiance was lovely - lighting, music, decor - all perfect. Every employee that we came into contact with was superb. The food. The FOOD y'all!! We started with the Crispy North Carolina Shrimp and the Blue Crab and Spinach Dip. AH-MA-ZING!!! Generous portions and I would have licked the plates if I wasn't trying to be classy tonight. Hubby ordered the salmon. Of course, I had to have some of his food - perfectly seared on the edges, moist and flavorful in the middle. I had the scallops with asparagus and scalloped potatoes. I had the lamb lollipops and they were cooked perfectly with a delicious balsamic glaze with crumbled chèvre. Additionally not photographed I ordered the Key Lime pie because being from Florida means it's a habit. The Key Lime Pie was made in house and was absolutely perfect.
