Who moved my cheese.....and bread? The two items we love here are the bread basket and French onion soup. Both WERE to die for but now have changed. The soup now has a severe cheese reduction which greatly disappointed. Secondly, the new bread recipe has been downgraded, and served sliced thin like crustini. Nothing like it was served prior. I had long wondered about this restaurant and now I'm sorry I hadn't found it sooner. A very nicely acquainted place in a strip center off the beaten track, it's neighbor is a Thai restaurant I haven't tried but with an excellent reputation. I was there for lunch and was greeted warmly despite the cold day. The place wasn't empty and it wasn't full but the staff was just right frequently visiting the table to see if there was anything they could do. The menu was nice but limited. Surprisingly I saw the catfish on a different day and asked about it and they said they would be happy to provide that item. It was great. The French fries were terrific. The green beans were green beans. And the muffin was maddeningly delicious. I am looking forward to returning for dinner. The selection looks awesome. read more

Food was decent, but didn't really command the pricing that they charged. We had a steak and some fish, both good, but not great. It's a steakhouse in a strip mall. The wait staff seemed a little flustered, but no big screw ups. We started the night with the "Hot Crab & Spinach dip". It was a ton of cheese and honestly almost too rich to eat more than a few bites. I wouldn't suggest ordering it unless you have 3 or more people at the table as 2 shouldn't eat the whole thing. I had the Halibut that was cooked nicely and my date had a ribeye. Both certainly edible, but not really commanding the $30-40 entree price in my opinion. I don't know, I might try it again, I certainly will if somebody else is treating me to it. But there are plenty of other steak houses I'd go to first at this price point. read more

It was Christmas Eve, I ordered halibut and my date ordered steak-- we got chocolate cake for dessert. My date wasn't a huge fan of his steak, my halibut lacked flavor, and I wasn't a huge fan of the chocolate cake-- the icing tasted very artificial. Moreover, I ordered a mojito... and our waitress asked me if I wanted Tito's, bless her heart. She wasn't old enough to even hold a drink. My drink was made without mint, just rum and lime. Very nice dinner. We sat at 7 PM on the night after Thanksgiving, so it was a moderate night for dining traffic. Everyone was pleasant and the service was quite good. House wine (Chardonnay) was nice; the signature Lemon Drop martini was quite tasty. The Baked Brie appetizer was good. The only nit here is that better care should be taken in making sure enough Brie gets into each puffed pastry (one of the puffed pastries had almost no cheese in it). Dinner was the Scallops, the Surf-and-Turf, and the 8-oz Fillet. Scallops were quite tasty but one side was seared to an almost-black crisp and the other side hardly seared at all. Presentation needs work here. The Surf-and-Turf was given a big thumbs up by my son (especially the shrimp). My 8-oz Fillet was ordered medium rare but came out medium (hardly any pink at all). It was promptly retrieved by the waitress and what appeared to be a 12-ounce Fillet offered in it's place which was done to perfection. Bravo! No one is perfect and things do go amiss in restaurant kitchens from time to time. The real measure of a restaurant is how they deal with these unavoidable one-offs. Choplin's gets high marks for making it right! The three of us split the strawberry cake dessert and the Bailey's chocolate cake dessert --- all homemade and delicious. Regular coffee was good; the decaf was quite bitter (old pot, perhaps). Again, presentation needs some fine-tuning. Good restaurants don't allow a pot of coffee to sit for more than 30 minutes; this is an easy fix. After I ate and left I read some of the comments left by other Yelp! users regarding Choplin's. I especially read the poor comments to see what problems others have had. Chef Wes needs to tone down his responses a bit and not fall victim to hateful posters. Telling a diner to "go and dine elsewhere" is never the answer, no matter how obnoxious the poster appears. Chef Wes, I respectfully suggest you let your food do the talking, tighten up where possible, and always maintain a "give us another chance'" attitude with hateful posters. As to the hateful diners/reviewers, the same is true for you as it is for a restaurant --- you are judged on how *you* respond/react to adversity (late seating, mistakes, etc.). Smile, take a breath, and ask that it be made right. I think you will find that Choplin's will be willing to accommodate you! I wish Chopin's continued good luck. I will be back! read more

The food quality is not reflective of the prices. First, on a positive note, the brussel sprouts were excellent. I had chicken picatta, $32, for a chicken breast on pasta. There was absolutely no hint of lemon and it was bland overall. We also tried the crab fondue and didn't eat more than 3 bites. I didn't taste any crab. It was very cheesy, with some spinach, but again not good flavor. This restaurant has many good reviews. I wish my experience better. read more

We visited Choplin's for the first time for a birthday dinner. We booked a reservation at 2:30pm to arrive for dinner at 7:30pm. I got a text confirming we were booked for a patio table with the option to wait 30+ minutes for an indoor table. We arrived at 7:30, & they were so busy that we weren't able to check in until about 7:45. The manager checked us in, pointed thru a window at a table that would be ours (full of guests at the time), and told us it would be a 10-15 min wait. We agreed to the patio based on that. While we (and many others) waited, they offered free wine to everyone except us. After ~30 mins, our table was finally ready, and we were seated at a plastic folding table with 4 plastic folding chairs & 2 ottomans. It was far from what we expected, but we decided it was fine for ~an hour of dinner. After over 30 mins of waiting to order our food, we asked to be moved inside & were offered two separate booths. We settled for the cheap patio seats to stay together. After another hour, the restaurant was closed and mostly empty, and we still didn't have the food we had ordered. We were offered two free desserts that we hadn't ordered and didn't want because we had plans to eat birthday cake when we got home. Almost 2 hrs after ordering & not seeing any food, I complained. Up to that point, the staff was very kind, and we matched their kindness & positivity. They finally moved us inside to a table & still only offered a $50 gift card (so we could give them more money another day) to make up for the trouble. I had to speak to the owner & FIGHT to get 25% off our bill. We would've been ok with that if the owner's wife and the manager hadn't started blaming us for reserving our table "so last minute" and agreeing to patio seating (which we assumed would at least be comfortable). It was our fault for accepting the cheap patio table and having to wait over 2.5 hours for our food to be cooked. They also tried to make excuses about having two large parties that night. We spent 4 hours & over $500 there and were treated like we were at a cheap sports bar. The wait time and experience ruined multiple other plans we had for our evening and even the next morning (since we didn't get home until almost midnight). The food was great, but don't expect to be treated well if there are any problems at all. Unacceptable. We won't be back. read more

We've been coming here for years, but it seems to have gone down hill. The prices have increased a lot, but the quality hasn't increased to match. Our most recent visit, our server was danielle, and although she was friendly, she literally neeeevvvverrrr came around. We were there for 25 !! minutes before we were able to order alcohol! Everything with her just took way too long and it made things a lot less pleasant. I understand a lot of places are short staffed, but we watched other tables with other service get consistently visited, while Danielle was often no where to be seen. The eggplant appetizer has always been one of my favorites, but it was chewy, had barely any sauce, and literally came out with half of the sauce on the plate black and burnt. No idea how any chef or server would be ok with serving a dish that was literally black... Two of our party was sharing a plate, and we were charged a split plate fee. That wasn't advertised on the menu. The Brussels are also one of my favorite apps, but this time around, the insides were pretty much raw, so we kind of just had to pick around and eat the fried leaves. Food was fantastic Had Lobster bisque which was the best I ever had!! Shared a Large Caesar which had grilled romaine lettuce lightly dressed and fresh parmigiana cheese on top. My main course was half of a crispy roast duck glazed in a orange sauce on a bed of creamy mashed potatoes along with a side of fresh vegetables It was delicious!! What a great find off the beaten path! My colleague and I were in Charlotte overnight for a quick business trip last month and were staying nearby. We arrived to our hotel late and went in search for a place to sit and enjoy a meal after a long day of travel. We were a bit skeptical of Choplin's, to be honest. It's at the end of a strip mall, and by the time we arrived, the other shops there were closed, so it looked somewhat deserted. Man, am I glad we went in! We started with several appetizers, including a complimentary blue crab and spinach fondue (a Yelp check-in deal that day), petite pork shanks, and fried Brussels sprouts. We really enjoyed the short ribs and the Brussels sprouts. They were delicious! I would skip the fondue on a return trip, though. It was a bit grainy. For dinner, we split the Australian lamb lollipops. Holy amazing! This lamb was beyond finger-licking-good. We both ate every tine morsel. And I mean Every. Tiny. Last. Bit. They were served with Yukon mashed potatoes (clearly fresh made) and broccolini, which were also both fantastic. Service was friendly and thoughtful (our split entree was brought out on separate plates, beautifully plated), but it was really slow. The wine list was also a bit disappointing. There was little available by the glass that was more than mediocre, and the by-the-bottle offerings are also pretty standard. I don't believe the wines do justice to the quality of the food. Taken all together, I would definitely return, and recommend it if you're in the area! read more

Finally got the chance to try out this place for dinner. I have to say the fact that it's in a shopping center really made it someplace that I didn't know existed, but it seems plenty of locals know of this restaurant quite well. If going on the weekend I'd highly recommend making reservations. Once inside the room is cozy and has nice seating while you're waiting to be seated. I was very pleased with the quality of the drinks from the bar. As for the entrees I tried both the seafood and beef. Both were good, but I'd lean towards the beef offerings when returning. If you haven't tried this restaurant it's a fantastic choice for a romantic date night or if you just want to have a great meal. read more

Low Country with a Twist This is basically Low Country (Charleston) Cusine with an upscale twist. The closer to traditional Low Country Cusine, the more consistent. The upscale, because it has a bit of experimentation with it, can be great or a bust. Not everything is great but what does score is great. My favority is their take off on Shrimp and Grits. First of all, I am not a Grits fan even though I was born in the South, raised in the South etc. My take on grits up until now was that it would make a great driveway repair agent. The grits here are different. More of a risotto with a light, not the characteristic heavy texture without having to saturate it with butter. Who would have though that grits would come across this way but they pulled it off. The owner, Wes Choplin will normally make his way through the dining area at least once during your dining experience soliciting comments. One thing I liked was the fact he does listen. This is my 4th time eating here. The first 2 dining experiences were terrific, but the last 2 have been very mediocre. I'll describe my dining experiences last night. We had a reservation at 7. We showed up a few minutes early and had a seat while the hostess (I think also the owner) finished up taking a take out order. She was not wearing a mask out a shield even though the customers were. She was riding the struggle bus hard. She was visible flustered. 10 minutes later she is finally able to compose herself enough to seat us. Thankfully she had put her face shield back on (not as effective as a mask, but it's something and I don't presume to know her medical conditions which may prevent her from wearing a mask). The server, Matty, introduced herself and then went to grab a drink menu for us. Why we were not sat with one, I don't understand. I could see her other table was an 8 top that appeared to be finishing up their meal. Matty returned with the menu and we ordered our whole meal asking with a beer and a martini. I got my beer relatively quickly, but the martini took a solid 15 minutes to hit the table. We had to flag down another server to get it for us. Matty is clearly in the weeds. The Blood Orange martini is a good value because the glass is HUGE and is filled to the top. The taste was a little off from what we've had here in the past. I think it was too much Liquor 43 and not enough vodka, but I don't know the recipe. The soups initially go to the wrong table, but we flag down the food runner and get them delivered. The French onion is delicious, but could stand a little less cheese and some more actual onions. The lobster bisque is delicate and on point. The wedge salad hits the table before we're finished with our soups. That's a little annoying. Maybe Matty is inexperienced or undertrained and that's why she's in the weeds. The wedge is very tasty, but has way too much dressing. We order a couple glasses of Cab before the entree. Matty admits she is off no help in suggesting a wine. Firmly believe it's poor training which is shocking for a restaurant at this price point. The owners need to do better. Wine his the table promptly followed shortly by the 12 oz filet. The server has already split the sides for us (Thank You!). I split up the filet. It's overcooked. We ordered medium rare. It's a solid medium working on medium well. A crying shame for a $50 hunk of meat. I would have sent it back had our server checked on us soon enough. Alas, we didn't see her for 10 minutes after the food. Again, poor training (2 minute or 2 bite check back is day one training at every restaurant). The steak was also under-seasoned on top of being overcooked. We order a slice of apple pie cheesecake to go and get our bill. $140 for 2 soups, 1 salad, 1 steak, 2 glasses of wine, 1 martini, and 1 beer. At this price point, you expect a certain level of food and service. We did not receive that level. There are too many other quality options nearby for a failure like this. I would choose 131 Main, Kindred, or Epic Chophouse before Choplin's again. We tipped Matty $30 despite the poor service. It's not her fault she's not properly trained, and servers have taken a beating from the pandemic. read more

Don't let the location fool you, this is fine dining. Choplin's is located within a busy plaza but once you get inside, it's like you're in Uptown Charlotte. There are over 150+ other reviews, most of them positive so I'll keep mine short. While they are on the pricier side, their lunch is extremely reasonable. We just happened to come during lunch to use a gift certificate. The food was delicious. We had 4 courses and literally everything was amazing. The wine list was solid, too. 4.5 stars I went with my husband to Choplins on a Saturday evening. We made reservations for 7:30 p.m. When we arrived there was a rather long wait to be seated, close to an hour, but when we were finally escorted to our table things began to get better. There's complimentary bread and butter to start. It was pretty good. We ordered an appetizer, a wedge salad. It was also good. For the main course I had a chicken dish, my husband had steak. We shared our meals with one another. I was pleasantly surprised by our food. The chicken was tender and the demi glacé that it was nestled in was delicious (my only complaint was that I asked for no mushrooms and it arrived with mushrooms all over it. They were large enough to see so I removed them which was good). The steak was cooked well. I'd return to Choplins, but only for a special event such as an anniversary since they are a bit pricey. We had a groupon which helped, but still too pricey considering the extremely modest interior and $60 price tag that didn't include any beverages or dessert, and was after the $30 taken off for the groupon. Overall, excluding the long wait and the mushroom mishap, we were pleased. Everyone was very pleasant and we would return for a special occasion. read more

We tried this restaurant with a Groupon we had purchased and we will defiantly be back! Everything was delicious and so mouth watering. I had the scallops (so buttery, but I could have done without the turmeric rice, but I'm not a huge turmeric fan) and my husband had the ribeye which we wanted 3 more of, so I'd say it's pretty good. Our service was great despite the owner having to wearing a couple of hats as it seemed they may have been short staffed, but I commend her on her work. She was our hosts, waiter and server for the evening. We did not notice a slow pace that she had apologized for. We were expecting a layback and leisure type meal with this upscale restaurant and we had a fantastic time. A perfect date night for my husband and I. This is by far the BEST meal I have ever had! Every bite was pure perfection. My tastebuds are still popping. My boyfriend got the 8oz filet and that melted in your mouth as well. Somebody tell me why until now haven't I heard anything about this place! This the best meal I've had in Charlotte in Years! 1st of all the atmosphere is a mix of bourbon street, and napa valley! I didn't have any expectations for Choplins but right away I was blown away with the level of professionalism from the staff and Omg our food was over the moon! It started with a shrimp appetizer which was full of flavor and the Shrimp was exceptionally Large! The crab Fondue, you couldn't stop eating. The Mother Earth & Caesar salads were above average and the entrees where simply Amazing! From the Land & Sea to the Pork Porterhouse again simply amazing! Even our drinks were good! My BF and I had dinner this past weekend. Choplin's is a very small restaurant. They have a bar with 4 seats but no bartender (so we were told). The check-in area was chaotic when we arrived with several ladies running around trying to find seats for people with reservations. When we were finally seated we found the tables are crowded together. I thought we would have a romantic dinner but we had people on either side of us. The food was meh. I don't think we will visit Choplin's again. It's too pricey for what you get. read more

We celebrated opening of restaurants last night at Choplins. The service was impeccable. Dani knew the menu inside and out and helped all of us make the greatest decisions. She was also funny. Wes, the owner, came by to check on us and say how grateful he was that we were there. But the best part was the food. The filet was absolutely delicious and perfectly cooked as ordered. The halibut was so fresh and great sauce. Two of us had the duck. And again, delicious and crispy. Cocktails beforehand were large and creative.
